As long as you're in the Xbox One neighborhood, I also recommend looking at:

  • Sunset Overdrive: Launch trailer. Well-respected developer with a couple decades of stuff under their belts. You can get this one for ten bucks on Amazon.

  • Forza Horizon 2: E3 trailer. I generally don't like racing games, but this one is slick, easy to get into, and is set in an open-world environment that I just like driving around in. Horizon 3 is coming out in a few months. Free demo downloadable here. If you like it, Amazon has it on sale for $35. If you have a GCU account with Best Buy, they will price match Amazon, where it's currently marked down to $35, and bring the price down to $28. This only works with physical copies. XB1 also has Forza 5 and 6, which are more traditional racing games.

  • Then there's the Master Chief Collection, which lets you play Halo 1 through 4 (but not Reach). The first two games have been remastered. It's pretty cool. Multiplayer was pretty buggy at first, and by the time it got fixed, most people had moved on to other things. But the single-player campaigns are a fun ride. Launch trailer.

I personally feel that the PS4 has a better selection of games overall, but if you're ready to try an Xbox, there are some worthy reasons to do so. The console also has support for HBO Now, while the PS4 does not. You can buy the Xbox One S next month, which is a revised version of the console, but it costs $400. There are cheaper versions coming (less storage) but not until December. You you can get a bundle with the regular version now.

If you like Bioware games like Kotor and Mass Effect you'll probably like the story quests. I just started Swtor this week and am enjoying it. Here's what I did:

I tried out the F2P mode for a few levels and liked what I saw but felt limited by some of the restrictions. But I liked the story telling and voice acting enough to want to keep playing.

http://www.swtor.com/free/features

So I purchased the physical game for 8 bucks on Amazon because it comes with a free month of subscription status and 500 coins to use in the game shop.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CWXAP2

Seemed worth it because the price to unlock the Preferred account status is buying anything from the store, but the lowest 500 Coin package is 5 dollars. So with the game disc on Amazon you get the month sub and 500 coins, plus another 100 coins each month for using an ios/android security key. After the month is over it drops down to Preferred.

If you use a referral link, like mine below, you get an extra week of subscription time and a referral bonus pack of items and unlocks.

http://www.swtor.com/r/lLF8KW

So for 8 dollars and a referral link, I got 37 days of subscription time to check out the Bioware story telling I enjoy.

I know the question has already been answered at this point, but yes! The full collection will be coming to the PS4. Here's a few links that may interest you:

I highly recommend Masters of Doom, it covers the story of John Carmack and John Romero from their pre-id years up until around 2002 or so and goes over the development of early id games like Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake as well as other companies at the time like Apogee/3D Realms and Softdisk and of course Ion Storm, Daikatana and the issues with its development.

If you find that interesting i also recommend Jordan Mechner's Making of Karateka and Making of Prince of Persia. These are unique in that they are the journal that Jordan Mechner kept while making these games (start with the Karateka one, the PoP one continues more or less where the Karateka one ends) back in the 80s and early 90s up until he started working on The Last Express and give a unique look not only at how development was done at the time, but also how a very known at the time publisher - Brøderbund - was running during their later years (which sadly ended up collapsing in the midlate 90s just when The Last Express was released, which ended up with TLE becoming a commercial failure despite the critical praise it had, in large part because the marketing team left the company weeks before the game's release and nobody was around to market it :-P). Also there are several bits about Mechner's attempts on movie writing since that is another passion of his, although that wasn't as successful (he did write the Prince of Persia movie though and was a moderate success).

Another interesting book is Hackers. This is an older book, written in early 80s about the "computer hackers" that influenced modern computing. A large part of the book is about the earlier communities, like those at MIT from where the free software and open source movement began, but there is also a sizeable part about the early days of gaming companies that would later become powerhouses like Sierra and - again - Brøderbund. This last one is very interesting because you can see the shift from the early Brøderbund days in Hackers towards the more boureaucratic and sterile environment in their later days as shown in Mechner's journals. This also makes me curious about their last days and i'd like to see Mechner writing about the development of The Last Express if for no other reason than that.

Finally a book that i also liked a lot, although this one focuses more on a single genre and the games that make it up, is Dungeons and Desktops which focuses on the development of CRPGs from the early attempts at mainframes down to modern RPG games.

Computer and computer gaming history are favorite topics of mine and i tend to buy books about them (and i really like finding common pieces in different books).

u/semperverus · -3 pointsr/Games

Neither does the purchase of the xbox. You don't put your entertainment center's cost into it.

You're also failing to remember that TVs have HDMI ports, and so do GPUs. You can use a controller with your PC in pretty much every game that isn't an MMO or a DOTA clone.

As far as the keyboard and mouse, you could easily start with two $10 shitters. I have a Corsair K70 RGB (blue) that I'm typing this on right now, but before I had this, I was typing on a Logitech K120, and for a membrane keyboard, it was actually really good.

EDIT: Just read the bit about the OS. It's true that Windows is sort of expensive, but Linux is slowly (and actually measurably, not just "ITS YEAR OF LENOX GUIZE") becoming a very viable gaming platform. Loads of games are coming out for Linux because of SteamOS, and lots of AAA titles now too. Borderlands and the witcher series come to mind. There are also ways to get legitimate Windows licenses for free (if you're a student) or nearly free. In the future, there may even be completely free versions of windows, and windows 10 is a completely free upgrade to anyone running 7 or up.

You didn't give a budget so I'll send you one.

Logitech G502 - https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Spectrum-Shifting-Personalized-Programmable/dp/B019OB663A/ is RGB but reliable and one of the best mice out there.

Logitech G203 - https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Prodigy-Wired-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B01M26YUKO/

Logitech G300 - https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G300s-Optical-Ambidextrous-Gaming/dp/B00RH6R7C4

I think Logi makes the best mice and they have plenty of options at many price points. They love their RGB though.

Ducky Secret - Bulky, overpriced, no bells or whistles mouse. I love it.

It's really weird it is translated so slowly, cause in Poland it's like the most famous saga and personally i think that what Andrzej Sapkowski created is genius. Interesting fun fact: The Witcher (game series) take off where the books have ended and are officially approved by the author.
Anyway, you're in luck!

Ok, so i'll try to give You some help, whether You like it or not. Sapkowski first started to publish The Witcher stories in a magazine between 1986-1990. Then they've been assembled in books. So, to this day there have been 7 stories compilations released (In Poland), but what we're interested in are the following: The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny in that order (these 2 are the introduction to The Witcher world)

THE WITCHER - INTRODUCTION

  • The Last Wish (1993) was released in English in 2007. Here it is on amazon
  • Sword of Destiny - The book has been translated into Czech, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, Bulgarian and French. It has not been translated into English and there are no plans to do so to date. The publisher of the English edition of the Witcher books decided to skip The Sword of Destiny and publish Blood of Elves.
But no worries, you already know what is going on and You're ready to jump in The Witcher Saga! (ok, you'll lose some of the flow, since there's a bunch of characters introduced here that later appear in The Blood of Elves.)

    THE WITCHER SAGA

  • The Blood of Elves(1994) - Here it is on amazon
  • Times of Contempt/The Time of Contempt(1995) - it was supposed to be June 27th, but on amazon it says August 27th - Here it is on amazon
  • Baptism of Fire(1996)
  • The Swallow's Tower(1997)
  • Lady of the Lake(1999)

Well, with Witcher 3 coming soon and with the hype around it i guess they will continue the releases. I highly recommend it to everyone! Also it gives a better perspective on the game series, its characters, plots, etc.

There's also one Witcher story (The Spellmaker) in this: The Polish Book of Monsters

The first one to come to mind is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Holy crap that game...

Whenever talking about amazing games, this one tends to get overlooked due to the encouraged co-op. The game has such a consistent theme and atmosphere (of dread and futility) that it reinforces perfectly through gameplay and action (Tipa, a dungeon/level, serves as a reminder of what you are fighting to prevent delay). This only works because the game does NOT hold your hand, and if you do not pay attention, the game will appear to be infinite and never end. The emotional payoff of the end is exponentially magnified by how it interacts with all other major emotional scenes. Aside from the conclusion/climax, each side-story's 'payoff' is tainted with a taste of powerlessness and futility, making you feel like you are just scraping by in a hostile world, as you were only able to slightly affect that plot-line's outcome.

This makes the ending that much more powerful, and actually motivated me to beat it as soon as I found it (horribly underleved/geared mind you). Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is the only game I think successfully pulls off the 'save the world' idea because of how well it sets up that you are the only one to be able to figure it out and have the strength to overcome what awaits. The emotional payoff from the ending credits has eclipsed anything I have ever played since (is highly vocal soundtrack fits perfectly in this regard), even TWEWY which I would also say is a very emotional and impactful game.

Please, if you liked games like the Tales series or Final Fantasy, and are not scared of live action/vs turn based or are intrigued by what I have said, check the review. You do not need a GBA/Game Cube connector for single player, but if you like the game and have another to play with (you probably can emulate 2 player), consider purchasing the needed cables. Also, don't forget you can pop it right into a Wii, and again if you wouldn't take my word for it, try it out for free.

If you read this far, here is a (monotone, but very informative) video review. If this video doesn't cover anything that worries you, then what are you waiting for? If you have any questions or concerns, ask me and I'll respond as soon as I'm able.

Oh, and here it is on amazon. The game alone is going for $34, and with the cable is $38. If you have a GC or Wii and access to 2 GBA's it's well worth it to grab a buddy and pay $42 (at most).

Hell, if you want to, emulate it as a way of demoing it first if need be.

TL;DR: FF:CC, read before replying.

You can either play them chronologically in the order in which the games were released (I recommend this), or play them chronologically in the order in which the story occurs. Either is fine but definitely do not skip the original Metal Gear Solid.

My recommendation is to buy either:

  • Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for PS2, which contains MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3, then buy MGS4 for the PS3, or

  • The original PS1 Metal Gear Solid + Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection for PS3 which contains MGS2, MGS3, and MGS:PW, then buy MGS4 for the PS3.

I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to start from newer games going into older games because you get "spoiled" by the updated combat mechanics of the newer games, which could make playing the older games more tedious. If you play the older ones first, you'll appreciate the better combat mechanics of the newer games. Having said that, I think that Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for Gamecube isn't as clunky as the original since it's a remake. TBQH with you, though, it's probably not as bad as you might think.

There are no published scientific papers, no peer-reviewed journals on these pages that establish that this is a widespread problem in games. The only scientific studies present talk about the potential effects of sexist content in games, which is not the same thing.

Have you read these articles?

The normalization of violence in heterosexual romantic relationships: Women's narratives of love and violence, Julia T. Wood. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 18 (2), 239-261, 2001 - Not about videogames.

The Sexual Objectification Spillover Effect - A blog post

Objectification, Nussbaum, Martha C. Philosophy and Public Affairs; Fall 1995; 24, 4; Research Library Core - Not about videogames.

How Fantasy Becomes Reality: Seeing Through Media Influence Hardcover – September 3, 2009 - A book. It may cite studies, but whatever those studies show is not evident to someone wanting to reference it online.

Sexual Priming, Gender Stereotyping, and Likelihood to Sexually Harass: Examining the Cognitive Effects of Playing a Sexually-Explicit Video Game - Hey, look! An actual study! And it shows that... playing a videogame with sexual themes may get players to think about sex more. Stop the presses. In any case, this hardly establishes any of the arguments being made here, so moving on...

Effects of exposure to sex-stereotyped video game characters on tolerance of sexual harassment - You can tell by the title that this isn't testing for how prevalent this is in videogames, so again this isn't something that proves the point you're trying to make here. moving on...

Objectification leads to depersonalization: The denial of mind and moral concern to objectified others - Not about videogames.

Sexualized avatars affect the real world, Stanford researchers find - Once again, not at all about the prevalence of objectification in games, only the effects.

The embodiment of sexualized virtual selves: The Proteus effect and experiences of self-objectification via avatars - assumes as a given that sexualization of females in videogames is prevalent and well-established, and moves on to talking about effects.

The Afterglow of Construct Accessibility: The Behavioral Consequences of Priming Men to View Women as Sexual Objects - Again, talking about effects.

Sexism in online video games: The role of conformity to masculine norms and social dominance orientation - Seems to be a study of gamers, not the games themselves.

So yeah, keep arguing that Sarkeesian has any actual interest in showing how widespread these supposed "tropes" are in games, instead of just citing a bunch of loosely-related studies along with blogs and opinions of others in support of her already assumed conclusions. Makes you look super serious and honest.

So yeah, you're just gonna' keep asserting your own preconceived notions instead of actually assessing the information in front of you. I thought you were honestly trying, but you aren't.

I found myself asking the same question not too long ago! His best writing is the series of short stories he wrote for magazines that we collectively know as the Cthulu Mythos. You'll want to check out Necronomicon, which is the compilation of the best and most famous stories.

https://www.amazon.com/Necronomicon-Best-Weird-Tales-Lovecraft/dp/0575081562/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537458514&sr=8-1&keywords=necronomicon&dpID=51We1j8PEkL&preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

Personally, I got myself the audio book version which is fantastic if you love scary stories. I listen to it in my kitchen while doing dishes. Great stuff. :)

Oh.....and fair warning. H.P. Lovecraft was kinda racist and it shows in some of his writing. =/

Whoa there, let's clear up some things. SD cards are perfectly fine for MANY reads, and a 128 GB card will be fine for hundreds of terabytes of writes over its lifetime. [This card] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DOB6YW4/) is cheaper than $50 and has better performance than a hard drive.

128 GB is 128 GB +- a few megabytes due to partitioning. You're probably thinking about how hard drives were marketed with misleading SI or "metric" gigabytes which were 10^9 bytes instead of 2^30 . SD typically report using the 2^30 system your operating system uses.

Edit: /u/the_loneliest_noodle is right: That card does not have equivalent read speeds to the typical 5400 rpm drive used in consoles. Those get ~100 MB/s. Consecutive write speeds shouldn't really matter for gaming though. If you really want the best read speeds at that capacity, you have to start paying more like $80: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U77V5KU

u/generalchaos316 · 1 pointr/Games

Yes, but console gamers have never had to purchase additional input devices to have new experiences on their platform. No console manufacturer has ever expanded on their initial controllers to try to provide a more robust experience.

Also, KB/M is the superior control scheme for all games. Developers should be expected to release a PC game with KB/M controls that are flawless for the genre. There is no reason that any other input mechanism might enhance any PC gaming experience.

edit: This is also not KB/M but I guarantee you would like to experience it.

I love Metal Gear... and I already have two collections:

Metal Gear: The Essential Collection released in 2008 (this one was criticized by some for not including the Gamecube remake, but rather including a PS1 disk)

Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection released 2011 (again avoids any remake of MGS1 or GCN port, also leaves out Portable Ops: is basically MSG2, 3, and Peace Walker)

Is this a new thing? Release a random collection of MG games every 3 years? If there's an HD remake of the original Metal Gear (a la, the project they shut down) and MG2.. along with a port/remake of the GCN version - that would be worthwhile I guess.

If it's HD-collection redux with slightly "more HD" versions of the previous games....? I can't see them having done proper remakes in this time frame. Previous HD collection + Ground Zeroes? Same issue.

Here are some things you can try if you haven't already:

  1. Use ethernet the whole way. If you do this, there will be almost no latency or noticable compression. This may not be feasible for the steam link itself, but you can likely pull it off for the PC connection. The less Wifi you use, the better the picture quality is.
  2. If you can't use ethernet, try using a Powerline adapter. Essentially these things send super small electrical signals through your house's circuit (unnoticable to any of your appliances) to replace ethernet. It's not quite as fast as ethernet, but It's a hell of a lot faster than wifi and should be fine for the Link. You can only use this if your PC and Steam link are on the same circuit.
  3. If you can't use powerline either, use a 5GHz Wifi connection if you can. It has smaller range but much higher bandwidth so you won't have as much latency / compression
  4. If you're using Wifi move your modem, PC, and steam link away from large metal objects (think about what's behind your walls!). Note that the material is important here - wifi signals can travel through wood and drywall pretty easily but not aluminum.

>Once again, Microsoft offered a compelling event for those of us who enjoy the boardroom intrigue of the games industry as much as the games themselves. Though as someone who has seen our in-depth reports on game developers be dwarfed in readership by a 15-second teaser for Pokemon, I can assure Microsoft that its business plans are of little interest to average E3 viewers.

Uhh MS had the most talked about E3 of the year though? So lots of people had interest in new Xbox hardware. Also the Xbox Slim is the highest selling console on Amazon right now. Really this article can be boiled down to "I liked the Sony games better."

My friend and I play Euro Truck Sim 2 with the Logitech Driving Force GT. It's got 900° rotation (which is actually more than most of the trucks in that game, but it is tweakable in the options to line it up perfectly) and the shifter works really well too, if not simplistically. The Logitech G27 is pretty good too, but I've found that the 6-position shifter can be picky about the clutch. There's no analog use of the clutch, it reads it as either a digital up or down, and if you release the clutch before getting the stick all the way into the gear you want, it will just pop you into neutral. I suppose if you're really looking for immersion though, that would be the wheel to go with.

The physical version can be bought off Amazon for the same price with no pre-order fee, no tax, and $0.99 release date shipping: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Old-Republic-Pc/dp/B001CWXAP2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1322663906&sr=1-1. Also that fee comes out of the overall charge of $60; it's not some tacked on fee like your cellular phone bill. It's refundable and it's also called a deposit in every other industry. Origin WILL refund your 5 dollars if you choose to cancel your pre-order.

I, and many others, who live prefer to deal with the clutter of game boxes actually prefer digital download. It's also better for the environment to not waste the limited resources of the earth to just install the game if you have a decent internet connection (That's a personal choice and I understand many view things differently and that's okay).

You haven't been able to resell PC games for a long time now; Steam pretty much put an end to that. Before you could at least forfeit your game CD and hope the other person trusts you to not use the CD-key after you sold it or vice versa.

At some point we need to have a discussion as a community about what price we use when we talk about graphics cards and equivalence & power/$.

AMD RX 480 MSRP Pricing

The AMD RX 480 reference card is MSRP'ed to retailers at

  • Any brand reference - 4GB: $199 MSRP
  • Any brand reference - 8GB: $240 New
  • XFX Overclocked- 8GB: $270 New

    (Sources: NewEggBusiness.com)

Now these MSRP selling points are not the "price" of the card, only the MSRP used for retailers. The market rate price on amazon, etc, which is controlled by supply and demand and free market pricing, is a much different story. Cards sold at MSRP are purchased and resold on the free market unless this 'arbitrage' is controlled. Currently AMD does not enforce any MAP or other price controls on stores.

    AMD RX 480 Market Pricing:

  • Any brand reference - 4GB: $? Note: Impossible to find this card for sale!
  • XFX reference - 8GB: $375 Amazon
    Amazon
  • Any brand reference, not XFX - 8GB: $325 New Amazon $375 'Used' Amazon marketplace
  • XFX OC - 8GB: $370 Amazon -

Note how the OC XFX has elevated the cost of the stock XFX card even though it is functionally the same as the Sapphire/MSI etc stock reference cards. Demand and pricing don't follow logical feature comparisons.

Let's pull in the Nvidia cards share we?

    GTX 1080

  • Any brand founders reference - GTX 1080: $699 MSRP NVIDIA
  • PNY Founders reference - GTX 1080: MSRP $699 New Amazon
  • EVGA Founders reference - GTX 1080: $830 New Amazon
  • MSI Founders reference - GTX 1080: $850 New Amazon
  • MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING - OC: $775 New Amazon

    GTX 1070:

  • ASUS Founders reference - GTX 1070: $525 New Amazon
  • ASUS overclock - GTX 1070: $449 New Amazon

    GTX 1060:

  • Any brand reference - GTX 1060: $299 MSRP NVIDIA

    Conclusion:

    *edit:
If the price vs MSRP for other cards is any indication, it is reasonable to expect the 1060 to retail significantly over the $299 asking price post launch, maybe $350 or higher. Then it becomes a question of value and how the 1060 will effect the market demand for the RX 480. If the OC versions of the RX 480 are on the market and maintain the same or lower prices as currently($325-$375) then the value/$ of the RX 480 is still higher than the 1060's likely real world results.

Also, if you want to shell out some dough (like $100), you can buy a wheel, which takes the controller out of the scenario (other than navigating menus). Also most wheels will offer resistance when turning. I don't own one, but I've used one. It makes the experience 1000 times better.

Edit: Apparently it even comes with a sort of larger demo version of Grand Turismo 5.

It'd be nice if people could use this link if they plan on purchasing the game, it's a Child's Play affiliate link and is Tony approved.

Also, here's the /r/gamedeals thread from the other day and here's our End of 2012 discussion thread for the game. The general consensus in both threads is that it's not as good as Blood Money, but still decent and definitely worth it for $5.

Have one myself and it looks (and works) great. Front panel flips up and that's where you plug in the controllers (USB).

Can switch from SNES to nes to n64 to genesis etc without dropping the controller.

And it works with PS3 and I believe PS4 controllers via Bluetooth as well as retro controllers.

> And the prices are ridiculous, the larger ones being something like 200$.

You're off by a factor of two. A 64GB card goes for $91 on Amazon. Which is still at least twice what it should be, but not quite as bad as you make out.

> So not only do I have to think to myself before a purchase "Is this game worth the money?", I have to think, "Will I play this game enough to warrant it a spot on my memory card?"

You are aware you can delete games and re-download them later, right?

That's how I know you didn't even clicked the links:

So yeah, I'm not gonna engage any further. I thought you were honestly trying, but you aren't.

It did better in Japan than America, but to my knowledge it didn't do "well". I love my Vita. I think it's a great little machine, especially since like visual novels. I just know that I have to pick and choose which games to have installed at any given time because there's no way I'm buying another memory card. It's actually worse than I thought it was.

Look into trying this. I use it for my systems in my living room (have a router to split the connections, got tired of dropped wifi connections from interference in my apartment).

I've had solid success with them for quite a long while now, without dropping connections.

Great news! You can buy your 540p vita without a dock or wireless controls for just $233.

And unlike paying the EXORBITANT price of $16 for a 64gb fast sd card, you can get one of the cheaper Vita specific cards for just $20 (per 8gb).

I mean, in comparison, it's practically a steal.

Just get a Raspberry Pi, install Retro Pi and put it in this case

The 32 is $73 on amazon. And if you import it from Japan the 64 is 104.

Something is seriously wrong with that price. The most recent Amazon.com price was $191
