Hooly shit, my dude

4-6k is super overkill

A super beast boss of a PC could cost you up to 1-2k, VR setup maximum 1k, and other peripherals will probably total 200-500.

The thing is, that's if you're going for the "maximum ultimate gamer" setup. You can do it for way cheaper; I got a decent setup for less than 1k total.

That said, I'm going to give you some good advice to help get you started.

--------------

First, the PC.

Use the resources available to you at /r/buildapc or buy your own prebuilt. When going on this search, know the following:

  • Unlike on consoles, your experience on PC is highly customizable; with better components, you can have better-looking and smoother-playing games.

  • Different games require different amounts of "power" to run, and newer games always require more power than older ones.

  • The hardware pricing for PCs is pretty close to the hardware pricing for consoles; in other words, spending a console amount of money on a PC will deliver a console-like experience on comparable games. That's good enough for a lot of people.

  • Building a PC will be slightly cheaper than buying a pre-built PC with the same components, but the tradeoff is that you have to do your own setup and troubleshooting.

  • Many PC gamers on reddit choose to go on the high end and spend thousands on their rigs, but that doesn't mean you have to; depending on the game, you can have a dandy time on a $300 laptop.

  • In terms of specs, the most important component for your gaming experience when building / buying a gaming PC is the graphics card. Don't go too overboard with it; supporting components are also important, but the graphics card is typically where you can get the most bang-for-buck.

  • Whatever else you choose, definitely get an NVME SSD. It will change your fucking life.

Expect to spend around $600 - $1000 for a "basic" gaming PC, and around $2000 for a maxed-out top-tier PC.

    -----------------

Next, the peripherals. You will need the following:

  • A monitor

  • A mouse and mousepad

  • A keyboard

  • A headset and/or speakers + microphone

You can use a PS4 controller with your PC via bluetooth, a dongle, or a wire.

You also mentioned that you wanted a VR headset, so I'll cover that as well.

    -------

    The Monitor

The three most important features of a monitor are its resolution, panel type, and refresh rate.

  • A higher resolution will make a higher-detail visual image to look at while gaming, but will require more horsepower from your PC

  • A higher refresh rate will make for smoother motion during gaming, but will also require more horsepower from your PC.

  • The panel type will determine the responsiveness and color depth of your monitor. TN sacrifices color for responsiveness, IPS sacrifices responsiveness for color, and VA is in-between.

Most monitors are 1080p (shorthand for 1920x1080) resolution, with 60Hz refresh rate. This is just fine for gaming, and it's probably what your ACER monitor is. If you choose to upgrade, I highly recommend prioritizing a refresh rate upgrade; for gaming, upgrading to a 120Hz, 144Hz, or 240Hz refresh rate will blow your fucking mind, even at the same resolution (1920x1080).

Here's a helpful site with suggestions on how to pick out a monitor and what monitors to buy. /r/buildapc also has a monitor buying guide.

    -------

    The Mouse

Selecting a gaming mouse is very personal; it's like selecting a weapon of choice with which to smite your enemies, and there isn't really much that makes any gaming mouse "better" than any other. Even wireless gaming mice have become responsive enough to be just as good as wired.

I recommend Logitech G Series mice, and if you want, here's a gaming mouse reviewer's top 40 picks to sift through, with some advice on how to choose the right one.

Do buy a proper gaming mouse, though; they're relatively cheap, and it makes a huge difference to your experience.

Use a mousepad, but any mousepad is fine. SteelSeries makes "premium gaming mousepads", if you're after that, but they perform no better than your $5 bargain bin mousepad with a cat on it.

    ------

    The Keyboard

You'll be fine using whatever keyboard you have; it makes the smallest difference to your gaming experience out of any of the peripherals.

However, if you want the best of the best, you can get a proper "gaming keyboard" with mechanical switches. Head over to /r/MechanicalKeyboards/ to go pick one out.

    ---------

    The Audio

You're pretty much on your own for this one.

Some good brands for headsets are Logitech, Corsair, and Razer, but beyond that I have no idea how to pick one.

For speakers, I have no idea what's good. I use M-Audio AV32 speakers, and they work well for me, but there's a whole world of speakers to choose from.

Regardless of what you choose or even if you use your own gear, make sure you have a microphone; it makes a huge difference playing multiplayer games, and you did mention you want to play with your friends.

    ----------------

    The Headset

Here are the major options to choose from:

    Oculus Rift S ($400)

    Pros:

  • Cheapest

  • No "base stations" required

    Cons:

  • Owned by Facebook

  • Minimum VR experience

HTC Vive ($500) (or its associated upgrades)

    Pros:

  • Better tracking, audio, and visuals than the Rift

    Cons:

  • Requires "base stations"

    Valve Index ($1000)

    Pros:

  • Top VR experience with best tracking, audio, and visuals

  • Uses the best controllers (you can actually buy these controllers on their own for use with the Vive)

  • Produced by Valve, who also produces SteamVR, which is the primary software backend for most VR games

    Cons:

  • Most expensive

  • Requires "base stations"

I recommend the HTC Vive; in my opinion, it strikes the best balance between price and experience.

    --------------

    Hope all this helps!

In the future, I recommend /r/buildapc and /r/pcgaming for these types of questions; they'll be better-equipped to point you in the right direction.

After I finished building my PC, I still wanted to build but had nothing else to put into it... so I went a little buck with the peripherals.

Mouse: Cyborg R.A.T 9

I got this mouse for two reasons: it's extremely ergonomic, versatile and comfortable to use and it looks like it could probably transform into a Decepticon.

Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow 2012 Ultimate

The keyboard was actually a gift, I have really enjoyed everything about it though. Besides the glossy finish that does get really mucked up, I have no complaints.

Mousepad: Razer Goliathus Extended; Control Edition

I wanted my mouse and keyboard to both be on my mousepad so I opted for this giant ass thing. It's worked really well for me, besides collecting crumbs when I snack and game...

Speakers: Audioengine A5+ Bamboo Edition

Picked these guys up for a steal, they sounds completely phenomenal. Owning these speakers kind of pushed me into the world of high end audio, which eventually lead to me getting my DAC and my headphones.

DAC: Audioengine D1 DAC & Integrated Amplifier

Got the DAC here on Massdrop for like 40% off or something, I've found that it really rounds out the low end of the speakers and gives them more transparency overall.

Headphones: Sennheiser HD598s

I can't speak highly enough of these headphones. If you're into electro or metal, these probably aren't for you merely because of the fact that they are a very neutral sounding set of cans. The low end is definitely there, but it's not pounding and overpowering like many other headphones I've owned. I still swap over to my old HD408's for anything I want to rattle my skull with.

Headphone Stand: Cheap Knockoff of the Seivking Omega stand

Same thing, off Massdrop for a good price. It's a cheap Chinese version of a very high end stand but it has actually been really nice to keep my headphones on and compliments the speakers really well.

Headset: SteelSeries Siberia v2 Frost

Very comfortable headset, and really good surround effects on them. I could always tell where Elizabeth was in Bioshock Infinite because they have great directional sound.

I'm also running 2 of these fans on my desk to keep everything nice and cool during those hot summer days. Throw some LED accent lighting, a couple of USB hubs and some monitor mounts and you've pretty much got everything that sits on my desk.

Oh, and I almost forgot the best part! It probably gets the most use of any of my peripherals =]

Hope this helps your decision! I would certainly recommend a mechanical keyboard, you'll never go back after you've tried one out and there's many inexpensive options for them out there!

Jesus, this turned into a really long comment...

Johan Huizinga's work is pretty foundational to the philosophical underpinnings of games.

Man, Play, and Games is another significant work that predates video gaming.

On a less academic level, Inside Game Design is a book of interviews with several studios of varying success on the game design process and how it adapts from game to game.

These titles might be pretty fringe to what you're looking for, but I can recommend some web pages that provide more easily digested, general interest material that would be helpful to you. I also know of a number of relevant academic journals, if that is of interest to you.

u/jarkyttaa · 1 pointr/Gaming4Gamers

I know this isn't a movie, but The Ultimate History of Video Games is a pretty great read. By this point, its age is showing a bit (it only goes up through the end of the 90's), but it covers the early history of video games really well, and includes a number of pretty great anecdotes in there.

u/BTSavage · 6 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

How does he support his current monitors? Does he use the stand that came with each? You could get him something like this dual-monitor stand. I recently bought this and it frees up all kinds of space on my desk. I love it.

Also, as others have said, if you're going to buy a third monitor, try to buy him another of one he already has. However, it looks like the Dell monitor is the better of the two (running at 1440p, which is a higher resolution), and it is certainly not under $200.

Also, depending on the kind of games he likes to play, a larger mouse pad might be something he'd appreciate.

(note /u/sockpuppettherapy this post isn't really aimed at you in any way I'm just using your post as a launching point)

> There is no Roger Ebert of gaming

Speaking of Ebert as far as I'm aware he and Martin Scorsese are friends. Ebert still continues to review Scorsese's films and even wrote an entire book on him.

Is this a lack of proper objectivity? Is it a minor form of corruption as well? I agree that taking sexual favours for coverage would constitute a blatant breach of ethics but where does the line of corruption start? Is it writing about a friend? A close friend? A former lover? A current lover? A significant other? When does one cross the line from simply writing about someone they know through work to it becoming a conflict of interest? Is it only when sex is involved or does it start earlier? Is Ebert violating the ethics of journalism that people are trying to uphold here?

If you want another dock, buy the original one and a small case for it on amazon.

Usually the issues with usb-c are thanks to the cable. If you want to play it safe, buy one that Benson Leung recommends.

I usually use my ZMI QB820 Power bank with a Veckle USB-C (Benson Leung gave it 4 stars, he decreased a star because when he reviewed it the cable was unbranded. Mine came branded.) with my docked switch without any issues.

So either buy anything related to USB-C from Nintendo, research what you want to buy (reviews, etc) or play it safe buying anything with a good review from Benson Leung.

u/SaltyJake · 2 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

I’m sure it would. The only thing I would check is how the edge support is on your mattress. If your sitting on the edge, does it sink a lot and potentially put the table at an angle?

This is what I have and really like it. I have a couch on the opposite wall of my PC Desk and an OLED TV mounted above my monitor. So I game a little harder at the desk at 144hz, then sit back on the couch with this lap pad and switch the PC to the TV for some relaxed, beautiful 4K. It’s awesome for streaming something on the iPad too, when my wife and I want to watch different things, or I’m trying to watch multiple games at the same time (like right now with the NHL playoffs), without holding the tablet the whole time.

It sounds like he enjoys the same kind of games I like.

Check out Lego Batman 2 and Lego Marvel Superheroes

I enjoyed both of them. They're designed for kids so there's a minimum of reading. Some decent humor. They have open world portions and portions that take place inside levels. Both have flying and some degree of dressup.

They also both have co-op so if you like you can sit next to your son on the couch and play alongside him.

u/Wazanator_ · 2 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers
  • Cable management cord tube, use scissors to cut it into multiple parts.

  • Get a new surge protector, something like this. It will sit flat and you now can plug everything into it.

  • Want to get super cable management happy? Buy a bucket of cable tie mounts. After you have consoles and other devices in place figure out the best way to run the cables along the back between them then stick some cable tie mounts down and use a releasable cable tie, don't use standard cable ties unless you are going to leave some slack for cutting easier later without risking damage to your cords

  • You're already using one CD portfolio holder, why not get another large one and dedicate it entirely to games. If you do that and put the empty cases away in a box you could then put other things on the upper shelf like controllers

u/tomkatt · 2 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

It's pretty great so far from what I've seen. At high settings it looks as good as the PC version, and at low it's less of a battery drain (looks like on low it renders internally at 720p or something and scales up to resolution).

It plays well, and the on screen controls are sensible. Four buttons on the right and a dynamic stick on the left. It has controller support too (and works perfectly fine with my generic bluetooth controller). I've only noticed two caveats:

  1. When playing with a controller the on-screen touch controls are still visible. I contacted the devs about this and they said they're working on it, but encountered an interface bug while addressing it, so it'll be a bit yet before that's fixed. But they have plans to remove the on-screen controls for controller users

  2. Menus are all touch driven, and don't work with the controller.

It's solid though, and like 1/5th the price of the Steam version.
u/gamerhetor · 3 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

Many of the suggestions on this list are great (Koster's "A Theory of Fun" is especially good in my opinion), but one of the best books I've read is Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman's "Rules of Play".

In some ways it's an introduction to game design for designers, but it's way more than that - it touches on the philosophy behind "play" and "games," histories of gaming, personal anecdotes, insights from famous designers and way more.

You can ind a PDF of it very easily on Google, but I think buying it is very, very much worth it.

Also, as a shameless self-plug, I did my PhD work on videogames so I'm happy to talk about resources etc. - PM me or reply and we can chat about it!

u/Drithyin · 1 pointr/Gaming4Gamers

The main issue with FC5 I had was the screen tearing was really bad without vsync turned on. Even with an FPS lock, it was really noticeable.

With vsync on, it sometimes dips under 60fps, but it's never stuttery enough to notice.

I'm at work, so I can't get my options, but they are all pretty decently high, aside from turning the occlusion down to SSAO and some of the detail/textures to medium on things like shadows and water. Still gorgeous and smooth to play at 1080p.

That's on a laptop, btw.
