Not sure if this is the best place to ask (or I should start a post) but I have a list of laptops that seem to be great deals for the specs that they're carrying. Just having a tough time deciding. They range from USD 1000~1600. There's one ASUS that could get as low as 1030 for a GTX1080 but the responses to it have not been so good. Just wanted some good advice on which ones I should get and ones I should be more concerned about. At least I hope others will find this list useful.

• *Sager/Prostar Clevo w 9th gen i7 + RTX 2060 for $1299 - 500GB ssd, 16gb RAM, 144hz (no gsync but eh)Probably the most tempting laptop. It's seems super cheap for a RTX 2060; might be the best bang for the buck laptop out there. But some others seem good enough and a bit cheaper such as the Helios and ASUS w AMD. Anyone think the extra $300 over 1660ti laptops is worth for this? I feel like this one I could use for a good three years before changing set up. That it'll last a bit longer. Any drawbacks with Sager/Prostar from anyone else's experience?
  
• Acer Helios 300 for $1088 - GTX1660ti; 144hz; 16GB DDR4; 256gb PCIe NVMe SSDMost affordable and well regarded option but I'm not sure abut the 256gb ssd. The higher storage ones cost a few hundred more but they were only a bit more expensive a few days ago. I like playing FIFA, Witcher 3, Metro, TW3K and some relatively newer games. Just not sure if the 256gb ssd is enough. Might have to constantly install and uninstall. The price-tag is really hard to resist, though. But maybe it's worth spending a bit more on the Sager with better storage and graphics card.
  
• ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI for $1100 but through some discounts I can get to as low as $1039; i5-7200HQ; GTX1080; G-Sync (but 60Hz); 256gb SSD + 1TB HDDThis seems like an amazing deal. But the responses have been mixed. But a $1k laptop with gtx 1080 that will last about a year or two seem too good to be true. A bit suss but hella cheap. But again... for the lowest pricetag, a gtx 1080 that will last me a year or two.
  
• ASUS w AMD Ryzen 7 + GTX 1660 ti for $1134Seems like another cheap good deal. But are ASUS laptops just not that well regarded? A lot of mixed reviews. But I like the design, the thinness. Plus it has a good entry graphics card.
  
• ASUS ROG Zephyrus for $1311 - This one has a GTX 1070, 7th gen i7, 16gb ram, and 256gb ssd. Once again, ASUS isn't well received in amazon. This one's a bit more expensive than the Sager/Prostar. But I like the slim design and the GPU cards should be more or less equal, right?
  
• ASUS ROG Strix Hero II for $1372 - 8th gen i7, RTX 2060, 16 GB RAM, 521gb PCIe SSD
  
• Acer Helios 300 for $1384 - Only difference is bigger storage, 512 gbs this time. Same GTX 1660 ti and everything else. Considering there are cheaper laptops with seemingly better specs, maybe not worth the extra $300? Plus the others around this range seem to offer better bang for the buck.
  
• Acer Helios 500 for $1400 - AMD Ryzen 7 2700, Radeon RX Vega 56; Vega 56 seems like a really good card. But should I be considering this when there are rtx 2060 n gtx 1080 laptops available for cheaper or around the same price?
  
• Sager RTX 2070 for $1499 - Seems like a great deal for a 2070 card. But might still be pretty pricey for me. Yet considering some of the others, for value, this seems really good
  
• Acer Triton 700 for $1502.49 - GTX 1080 w G-Sync 120Hz, 512GB SSD. Again, like teh Sager, this seems like an amazing deal for the card and monitor. Only drawback I see is the trackpad
  
• ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 for $1549 - GTX1080 w 144Hz G-Sync, 16 GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 8th gen i7Similar price range as the previous two. I like the Zephyrus design better but that's really about it. But like the other ASUS laptops, it has mixed responses.
  
  Just for reference, I bought my previous laptop (now blue screened and unusable) four years ago. I wasn't (and still am not) very tech savvy so I wasn’t sure if it was a good gaming laptop back then. But these are the specs for my ASUS A501U: 6th gen i7; GTX 950M; 126gb ssd + 500gb hdd. I'm sure any one of these laptops will be great compared to my mingy 950M.

A good gaming laptop, first and foremost has a good GPU, so starting with a 1060, then 1660, 1070, 1660ti, 2060 etc... So between 600 and 800, you could probably find a 1060 pretty easily.

Secondly you want a good processor (an i5 should be fine, look for an 8th gen, like the 8300H) I'd stay away from AMD/Ryzen processors, their laptop stuff is pretty garbage, their desktop stuff is phenomenal though.

Thirdly, 8gb of ram is fine, but keep in mind you may want to upgrade a few months to a year down the line (installing RAM is super easy, just YouTube it)

Fourthly, an SSD is really nice for gaming (vs an HDD). Alot of the laptops you look at will have 128gb of SSD + 1TB of HDD. While that will help your machine boot quickly (windows will be installed on the faster SSD) there is not enough room on that boot drive for many games, so you'll most likely be putting them on the HDD which will cause slower load times. I'd rather have 256gb of SSD alone than 128gb of SSD + 1TB of HDD. You can always upgrade your SSD later though and can get a fairly decent 1TB one for $100 or so (not quite as easy as RAM usually but still pretty easy, and there should be plenty of YouTube videos on that as well)

Fifthly do not worry about getting a 4k screen or whatever, there are no laptops than can utilize 4k to it's fullest on any games more recent than 2012, and those are beastly machines.

60hz screen is perfectly fine when you're on a budget, but 144hz is always nice to have if you're machine can handle it.

It does help! I’ve been out of the loop laptop-wise for a while, but I’m still pretty in touch specs-wise. If what you want is a portable machine with whatever battery life that can play r6 and MMO’s, you would a laptop with an intel Core i5 7th gen, (or amd equivalent), a gtx 1060 (or amd equivalent), 16 gb of ddr 4 ram, a 1080p screen with 60hz (I highly recommend 120hz or greater) and whatever storage you want. All this is with future proofing for at least a year in mind

But, you can blow all of those specs out of the water with a budget of up to 2000$. I would recommend you buy a machine that will last you a while. For your CPU, an intel Core i7 8750hq, for your GPU (graphics card) an rtx 2060, 16 gb of ddr 4 ram clocked at 2400mhz, and, again, whatever storage you want.

(Keep in mind that and SSD is better than a hard drive in that it’s load times for whatever is stored onto there is a lot faster than a hard drive). I also recommend a 1080p screen with a 120hz refresh rate or higher.

Acer Predator Helios 300 for 1200$

I also highly encourage you to check out the YouTube channel Jarrod’s Tech Review as he does really good reviews on gaming laptops. There’s a lot of techno-speak, but he’s very in-depth and I trust his opinion on recommendations.

I also like Dave Lee just try and steer clear of the razor blade laptops. They are very good laptops with very good performance and specs, and they look beautiful, but they’re overpriced in my opinion and outside your budget of 2000$.

It fit seems to roughly fit your requirements (its ~1.2k), I bought when I went to college (2 years ago) used it every day since. Battery life isn't great but it is pretty powerful for the price (Gtx 1060 with a 7th i7), The keyboard is good, and the mouse pad is OK.

Not to plug my own thing but because of this laptop's mouse pad my friends and are making a mouse that travels with laptops so its always with us. The kickstarter launches soon, if your interested: PckRat.com for the email list. The laptop is actually used as the model laptop on the site.

Anyway the screens is great for the price, it has every port you want, and it is really reliable. I carry it my bag every day and its never a problem, I've even spilled a full glass of juice on it and it survived (although I needed to replace the keyboard)

I would recommend it, I think its one of the best bang for your buck deal you'll find . (Except for the PckRat www.PckRat.com )

Seeing your comment about keeping things under $1,000 I believe I can recommend some decent options.

First and foremost: do most of your shopping pre-owned if you roll that way. You can nab some really good prices for things if you look in the right places. eBay, local Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace is a haven for full-on desktops but sometimes have laptops too. LetGo sometimes has them. Basically, make sure you're thorough.

Second: For a under $1k price range, Sager/Clevo seems a good option. Good specs at lower costs. Just make sure to also invest in a heating pad, as it's not uncommon for gaming laptops to get a little spicy under duress. You can actually custom build a Sager on their official website (through presets they provide, but it still allows for customization) if you're curious about tooling the specs.

Third: Consider the brands you select. Do research on the best brands and be open-minded to your options. I myself have used HP Omen laptops and have found them suitable and a pleasant experience, but I know some people would avoid them like the plague.

899$ option packs a 1050 3GB. Not fantastic, but you should be able to run most things on low-medium or maybe high depending on what you play.

This Predator Helios 300 sports 144hz refresh rate and a full-size 1060, which should handle things pretty well at 1080p (I had a 1060 in a desktop and it kicked ass.)

Finally, this one sports a 1650 4GB with a Ryzen 7 CPU.


My recommendation is to search Amazon for the graphics card you want in a laptop as that will usually determine pricing.
Another recommendation is to search the graphics card you want and find benchmarks for various games (I prefer Technical.City benchmarks as they do LOTS of games and provide a visual to show it's performance compared to minimum and recommended specs.)

Okay, So i'll start by stating that i have no experience with Sager laptops nor i have met anyone irl who has used it. but the reviews are good. you should be satisfied with the laptop i'm positive.

I originally was thinking of building a PC but couldn't because of i did not have enough space. then i decided i was going to buy the desktop replacement for almost 3000$ , in the end i bought an HP Omen 17. and believe me when i tell you the laptops like GT76 or desktop replacements are sort of an overkill. sure you are getting better performance, but the price - performance ratio is not good.

if you're buying a laptop for 2000 - 2500$ you are getting almost equivalent performance of a PC with the same budget (may like 10-20% less, but not significant). But once you go over that limit it starts making less sense.

My recommendation is to buy an RTX 2080 - 9th Gen i7 laptop with Gsync. which will be able to run all games at ultra at an average of 100 fps. which with Gsync is such a pleasant experience. My laptop can run witcher 3 in ultra settings at 100-110 fps and the CPU clocks around 3.9 GHz, 80C. i do not see why you would want more performance than this on a laptop but its just my opinion.

I own the G3 with those exact specs, yes it is good but I recommend you upgrade to 16GB ram because 8GB is starting to become dated especially after I updated to Windows 1903 to use Xbox gamepass. I basically can't have a web browser with a single tab in the background because it throws off performance that much in games that use a lot of RAM like Monster Hunter World. The screen isn't really that good either it's 57% SRGB and for games with a lot of dark colors I'm forced to turning the in-game brightness all the way up which makes bright colors washed out and the dark ones just barely distinguishable. If you're up for it or can get someone else to do it I highly recommend you swap out the panel. This panel is pretty well recommended for Dell G3/5/7 laptop users because you can still use your brightness controls on it unlike other panels. It's much brighter and has a color accuracy of 100% SRGB and 89% Adobe RGB. I recommend you undervolt the CPU too it can get really hot in demanding games and easily go 90C+ and start thermal throttling. I undervolted mine to -0.160v and it drops the temperatures by at least 10C on full load so it doesn't thermal throttle anymore and power throttles a lot less.

Also whatever you do stay away from Dell Power Manager control app. I tried using it to limit my battery charge to 90% so the battery would last longer and now the machine can't hold a charge at all or recognize my AC adapter. I've tried every method except bios and chipset update because the battery is at 0% now and won't let you do it at that percentage.

As someone whose initial budget was $750, and then went up to $1000, and now it's $1300 all in, I 100% agree with this (unless there is some limiting factor like the money is coming from a bonus income source or you need it by a certain date.) I would rather not have to buy another laptop in a year or two because I bought one that will quickly become outdated or will break easily. I would also like to maximize my enjoyment out of something I waited a long time for and saved up money for.

OP, I know it sucks having to wait even longer when you already have your mind set on something but as someone who was in your shoes not too long ago, I think it is worth it. I was initially going to go with the Acer Nitro 5 for around $700 and I could have had it last month. The more research I did, the more I became convinced that it would definitely be worth it to just wait and save some more. I had to make a lot of cutbacks this month and next month will be really tight for me, but I should be able to order my laptop a week from Friday. Honestly, the wait and anticipation has made me even more excited for this purchase. If you are able to I highly recommended bumping your budget up a little bit. I eventually decided on the Acer Predator Helios 300 for just under $1200 and from everything I have been reading, it is well built and is a steal at that price.

I was just coming back here to respond with some Clevo resellers now that I'm at my PC, but /u/koimatsu did all the hard work.

I second his/her recommndation 100%. If your budget is $1000, that's definitely workable. You'll get the most for your money if you're not paying for a brand, like Dell or MSI or whatever. Clevo/Sager/Evoc cut a lot of the bullshit out, and you can get a reseller to put liquid metal / thermal pads in ther for your without voiding your warranty.

This stand is cheap and provides great air flow, you should get something like this for no matter any laptop you go with.


And with $1000, I'd recommend putting all that money into the CPU and GPU, since you can't really upgrade those. Don't worry about the storage or RAM and just upgrade those later. Plus RAM and storage have gotten very cheap. You could mow lawns for a weekend and afford to upgrade those.

Just make sure the laptop you go with has the capacity for more RAM and storage. You'd want one that can take 16GB (2 x 8 @ 2666MHz) minimum (32GB capacity is better, but unless you're doing programming or something you probably don't need to worry too much) some day when you can afford it. Dual channel memory is always better, but in the case where you're going to be upgrading, you should opt for 1x8GB and add the second stick later, so you're only buying one 8GB RAM instead of 2 to upgrade.

So yeah, get the best CPU and GPU you can, you'll be stuck with whatever decision you make. Everything else on the laptop is replaceable, even the screen.

I do have an alt: I bought this and am super happy. I did get 2nd stick of ram tho bc I wanted dual channel. Chassis is fantastic and screen is more than what I need honestly. The only complaint is it gets loud when gaming but I love headphones anyway.

Uhhh well for newer laptops and for newer games that might be a struggle with that kind of budget but here’s one for you that would definitely be fine for games like Skyrim.

Just don’t expect to play with any mods or play any newer games too well with amazing frames.

There are tons of gtx 1650 gaming laptops launching this or next month with intel 9th gen, most of them will be around $1k or slightly more or less. Although that card will run all the games you mentioned very well at max settings, it's not an incredibly powerful card for most AAA games.

I would suggest this Zephryus GA502 for $1200. It has a 120hz screen and gtx 1660ti max q card, which has has performance comparable or more than gtx 1060, and will last you for a long while. There's also a $1100 version of this laptop but with a 60hz screen instead of 120, but i can't find any links right now. Here's a review if you're interested.


If the extra $200 is too much, then you can't go wrong with the g531 for $1k. Compared to the other one, it has intel 9th gen instead of ryzen, isn't slim and has a gtx 1650. There's also a gtx 1660ti version and above for this, but seems like Asus hasn't put up e-retailer pages for it yet since they release later this month.

There's also this Acer Predator 300 with gtx 1060 that goes for $1k and is pretty popular and overall well-built but it runs very hot. Unless you want to cook food on your laptop, honestly wouldn't really recommend it.

I am really paranoid when it comes to drives as it is where I keep my files safe and therefore want them to be very very reliable. This makes me always go with trustworthy brands such as Seagate, Samsung and Crucial. However, Samsung is currently making the best SSDs in the market. At $70, I wouldn't recommend the Sabrent Rocket because its not a very widely known brand, at least not as widely known as the ones I mentioned. Don't get the Barracuda M.2 as it is too expensive for what it is. Get the Samsung 970 EVO. It's currently for sale for $90 which is only $20 more than the Sabrent and $10 less than the Barracuda. The 970 Evo is perhaps the best all round NVMe SSD in the market for the money right now, especially with the sale going on. Another option I would recommend is the Western Digital Black SN750. It's also among the top M.2 NVMe drives in the market which is also currently for sale at $90. I would strongly suggest these two instead of the Sabrent and the Barracuda.

May I suggest you with HP Omen 17" i7-9750h, 16GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe + 1TB HDD, RTX 2080 (Full), G-Sync 144 hz display? It has all the ports you need including SD card reader and Thunderbolt 3.

Old models had some heating issues, but this particular 2019 model has max fan settings so it does good job with taking heat out of the machine. Battery life is slightly better than Y740 without having to losing HDD space.

I undervolted my CPU and boom, love this purchase and I do not regret returning my Y740.

I believe Y740 only comes with Max-Q variant. Why pay more for less?!

I think that the non-mxq 2070 is the best bet for price/perf, since its quite faster than the 2060 and not that far from 2080 (since 2080s are at least $900-1000 more)

If weight is not a problem, i would recommenced finding a Acer Predator laptop. The Helios 500 looks great and very future proof, although over $1,500. The Helios 300 is 15.6in and very portable, reasonably powerful, reasonably priced and probably the best bang for you buck gaming laptop out there. I had the 2017 Helios 300 and it was a great laptop. I have full trust in the Predator line of laptops, I have had a few over the years and have never had one that disappointment me.

MSI has some good looking ones, like this. You could also get some great alienware configs for that price.

Also here is a great Acer Predator for $1100 that has specs better than some $1900 laptops I've seen.

They actually have plenty good deals right now. If you can wait a week or two, the Asus Zephyrus g has an AMD Ryzen cpu and 1660ti and it’s just over your price range at $1099 and will be an excellent option. The ASUS range is best value for money. I would have purchased this one from amazon if Australia didn’t impose an import tax on it that offset the value. If you can wait for it to go on special, it’s an excellent buy.

The y540 from Walmart, or the newer version of the Helios 300 are better options. The Helios will drop to under $1000 for black Friday. It sold out pretty quickly last time.

They perform nearly identically (after tweaking y540), so just decide which look your son would prefer. Y540 is understated, the Helios is gamer. Other differences, the y540 comes with a larger SSD (512 vs 256), and the Helios comes undervolted and OC'd out-of-the-box (minor to do yourself, but be aware). I'm sure he'll be thrilled with either!

And, no, he doesn't need more than 16gb of RAM. Although, both are easily upgradeable in the future.

If you don't mind buying used very good this is under 1k and really nice. If you have access to micro center they have an hp omen for 999 that's really nice but a dim screen. Basically in that price range you are looking at a GTX 1060 6gb, which is a great gpu. What else is important to you? Even size, build quality, weight, screen quality or refresh rate?

I've been researching laptops within your price range for a few weeks now. I keep coming back to this which seems to be the best specs for the price. Features full RTX 2070 (basically the second best laptop gpu you can get), 144hz display, and 17 8750h cpu. you can probably run both games fairly smoothly with these laptops... Though not sure about that last one, I guess it sorta depend on how hard you gonna mod your skyrim... I just went through this same agony and boy did it make my head spin. I was down to either alienware or Asus, I am really on par for Asus as a lot of my previous PC builds were Asus.

I love the Zephyrus because of its compact size. My biggest reason for going with the M model was because I didnt want to be strapped down by the memory and lack of secondary drive support. I wanted to have the main ssd chip for the OS and add a ssd sata for my secondary drive internally so I could install all my games on. The S model did not offer this.

The other thing that scared me about the Zephyrus was the reviews about issues. I did go ahead and opt for the 4 year assurion plan because I have had the same insurance for my cell phones and it is totally worth it.

Also reading about the GPU's gave me headaches, 1070, 1070 max q, 1080 omg which one?? I found that the regular 1070 was just as good as the max q if not better. Not as good as the 1080 obviously but I read reviews that the 1080 was a power hog and the laptop had trouble keeping up the performance.

I also liked the layout of the M model better than the S. The S also had a lot of negative reviews for the battery exploding and destroying the keyboard, no thanks. The M model keyboard is more centralized with a palm rest as the S model is clear at the bottom for cooling performance.

One more thought the 1080 max q isnt overall that great and it is using the older i7 7700, which isnt a bad cpu. At least with the M you are getting something newer on the CPU end. But that was another bonus for me. Depends on the model. The new M15/M17 lineup is actually really legit, but it's limited to single channel RAM due to size limitations; this isn't a massive deal, but it'll make the CPU perform slower than it should and unfortunately there's not another slot, unlike on other laptops where OEMs will often just leave the second slot unpopulated. Do you know what your budget is yet? If you can do $1.2k, the Acer Predator 300 is fantastic for the price, especially if you're just going to be using it at home and for like LAN parties or something

I'd recommend the ASUS TUF 505. It has a Ryzen 3750H which is a decent CPU. For the GPU it has a full desktop grade 1660ti. It also has a 120HZ IPS panel with great colour accuracy. All this for just $1099.

From a quick look at the recommended specs you want a laptop with something equivalent to or better than an i5 6600k, 16 GB RAM, and 4 GB of video memory. If interested this is the X stand I got for my 15in Y740. It folds up and keeps the bottom open. Pretty durable and it should work with any 15in or 17in laptop.

The specs look good on paper but it has a low quality TN display with poor contrast and viewing angles a bit like the left side of this photo: http://imgur.com/Sajajqc.jpg which I would say is really not good for a laptop costing $1149 letalone $1249. Companies using low quality displays in higher priced laptops is something you unfortunately really have to watch out for in today's market.

It's also the 1060 3GB which isn't a bad GPU, but it may be worth knowing that it's less performant than the 6GB version because it has a lesser core -- the memory difference is a bit of a red herring.

I think the best contenders for around this price are:

• Clevo N850HP6 through Eluktronics w/ 72% NTSC IPS display (Sager and Prostar use a 45% NTSC color gamut IPS display, but I think you can call them and ask for the 72%)

Anything with specs to handle those games are going to be plasticky and a bit thick with a tacky "gamer" design. That's just how it goes. That being said:

If you want specs, the Acer Helios 300 with a 1060 and a 144Hz display will fit the bill.


If you care for style more, the Aspire 7 with the 1050Ti evades the typical gaming laptop look but still comes in under $1000.

The 1050 is a fairly weak card that is already outdated. If I were you, I'd wait until Black Friday and look for deals on the Helios 300 with a 1660TI. It's going to be so much more powerful and last you much longer

I mean if you don't care about the 144hz screen @OP, if you you'd be willing to settle for the previous model (same specs iirc, 60hz panel) then I'd be willing to sell you my Helios 300. I added in the keyboard cover and a 1TB Seagate drive to the 2nd drive slot.

what's your opinion on Triton 500 17 9th gen vs Helios 300 17 9th gen. I am new to the gaming laptops arena. i know the helios 9th gen launched this year, what about the Triton, is it a new release too?

I don't game, i am taking a gaming laptop for some heavy CS stuff.
