Not sure if this is the best place to ask (or I should start a post) but I have a list of laptops that seem to be great deals for the specs that they're carrying. Just having a tough time deciding. They range from USD 1000~1600. There's one ASUS that could get as low as 1030 for a GTX1080 but the responses to it have not been so good. Just wanted some good advice on which ones I should get and ones I should be more concerned about. At least I hope others will find this list useful.

  • *Sager/Prostar Clevo w 9th gen i7 + RTX 2060 for $1299 - 500GB ssd, 16gb RAM, 144hz (no gsync but eh)Probably the most tempting laptop. It's seems super cheap for a RTX 2060; might be the best bang for the buck laptop out there. But some others seem good enough and a bit cheaper such as the Helios and ASUS w AMD. Anyone think the extra $300 over 1660ti laptops is worth for this? I feel like this one I could use for a good three years before changing set up. That it'll last a bit longer. Any drawbacks with Sager/Prostar from anyone else's experience?
  • Acer Helios 300 for $1088 - GTX1660ti; 144hz; 16GB DDR4; 256gb PCIe NVMe SSDMost affordable and well regarded option but I'm not sure abut the 256gb ssd. The higher storage ones cost a few hundred more but they were only a bit more expensive a few days ago. I like playing FIFA, Witcher 3, Metro, TW3K and some relatively newer games. Just not sure if the 256gb ssd is enough. Might have to constantly install and uninstall. The price-tag is really hard to resist, though. But maybe it's worth spending a bit more on the Sager with better storage and graphics card.
  • ASUS ROG Strix GL702VI for $1100 but through some discounts I can get to as low as $1039; i5-7200HQ; GTX1080; G-Sync (but 60Hz); 256gb SSD + 1TB HDDThis seems like an amazing deal. But the responses have been mixed. But a $1k laptop with gtx 1080 that will last about a year or two seem too good to be true. A bit suss but hella cheap. But again... for the lowest pricetag, a gtx 1080 that will last me a year or two.
  • ASUS w AMD Ryzen 7 + GTX 1660 ti for $1134Seems like another cheap good deal. But are ASUS laptops just not that well regarded? A lot of mixed reviews. But I like the design, the thinness. Plus it has a good entry graphics card.
  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus for $1311 - This one has a GTX 1070, 7th gen i7, 16gb ram, and 256gb ssd. Once again, ASUS isn't well received in amazon. This one's a bit more expensive than the Sager/Prostar. But I like the slim design and the GPU cards should be more or less equal, right?
  • ASUS ROG Strix Hero II for $1372 - 8th gen i7, RTX 2060, 16 GB RAM, 521gb PCIe SSD
  • Acer Helios 300 for $1384 - Only difference is bigger storage, 512 gbs this time. Same GTX 1660 ti and everything else. Considering there are cheaper laptops with seemingly better specs, maybe not worth the extra $300? Plus the others around this range seem to offer better bang for the buck.
  • Acer Helios 500 for $1400 - AMD Ryzen 7 2700, Radeon RX Vega 56; Vega 56 seems like a really good card. But should I be considering this when there are rtx 2060 n gtx 1080 laptops available for cheaper or around the same price?
  • Sager RTX 2070 for $1499 - Seems like a great deal for a 2070 card. But might still be pretty pricey for me. Yet considering some of the others, for value, this seems really good
  • Acer Triton 700 for $1502.49 - GTX 1080 w G-Sync 120Hz, 512GB SSD. Again, like teh Sager, this seems like an amazing deal for the card and monitor. Only drawback I see is the trackpad
  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 for $1549 - GTX1080 w 144Hz G-Sync, 16 GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 8th gen i7Similar price range as the previous two. I like the Zephyrus design better but that's really about it. But like the other ASUS laptops, it has mixed responses.

Just for reference, I bought my previous laptop (now blue screened and unusable) four years ago. I wasn't (and still am not) very tech savvy so I wasn’t sure if it was a good gaming laptop back then. But these are the specs for my ASUS A501U: 6th gen i7; GTX 950M; 126gb ssd + 500gb hdd. I'm sure any one of these laptops will be great compared to my mingy 950M.

Which one of these would you guys recommend? Thoughts on how black friday might change the price? Should I wait for BF or just get one sooner?

I bought my laptop from Amazon. Was a little worried about it being damaged during shipping but I was confident that Amazon would make things right if that happened. I bought directly from Amazon, rather than from a 3rd party seller (make sure it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" under the Buy button.) Unfortunately for me, when I bought it, it was $1,199 but fortunately for you, it is now $1,088. I'm honestly very surprised they lowered the price like that, considering it was already a steal at $1200 (IMO.) Oh, and for the record, I had no issues with damages during shipping. The laptop was in a box which was in a box which was in another box and there was plenty of protective elements within those boxes.

I have not had too many issues with my thermals, although this is my first gaming laptop so I don't have much to compare it to. I did a lot of reading before buying though so from what I have seen, I think it does a good job of keeping the components cool, even under heavy loads. The highest I have seen it go is around 85°C but once it gets over 80°, I usually either turn the fans up higher and/or get out my cooling pad (I bought this one from Amazon and have been pleased with it.) However, the fans can get really loud, so I use a headset when I have to turn the fans up. In general, the fans are not too loud, though (once again, just my opinion.) I will often play shows on Netflix or Hulu and can hear everything through the laptop speakers with no issues. I do carry around a portable bluetooth speaker for louder environments but when I'm just sitting at home, it is not needed.

I do remember reading that the older models of the Helios 300 (the ones with red accents and backlighting) had a lot of thermal issues and most people who either reviewed both or just owned both said that this model was significantly better in that regard. One thing that I have thought about doing is changing the thermal paste because that would apparently really help the older models but I have not seen any reports of anyone trying it with the 2019 model. I might just give it a shot because it seems like a very cheap and relatively easy way to shave a couple degrees off the temps. I'll have to look into that some more.

I actually have heard of that good xbox gamepass deal but I had no idea that it had PC games. As someone who has pretty much only gamed on PlayStation (at least since the early 2000's), I often forget that Xbox is owned by Microsoft so it makes sense they would have PC games. I will definitely be signing up for that after I finish writing this comment. Thank you so much for clueing me in.

One other thing, you will probably want to quickly buy another m.2 SSD because the one that comes with the laptop is fairly small. Just be careful about the one you buy because they are not all compatible, apparently. I am pretty sure that Acer has a list out there somewhere (though I don't think the list is all inclusive) but I bought this Sabrent 1TB drive based on what another reddit user recommended and have been very happy with it. It was extremely easy to install as well. I haven't gotten around to buying an 2.5" drive yet but I'll probably pick up a very large HDD around Christmas time. Or I might go for the SSD, maybe sacrificing a little bit of storage. I'll have to check prices at the time and think on that some more.

And no problem. I love talking about this laptop and I also enjoying helping people out so no worries. If you think of anything else you want to ask, I'll be here. If not, enjoy your new laptop!

After looking through the list some more, here's some oddities.

The MSI Stealth you posted is a 1060. The Y740 is the same price for the 2060 version, and comes with Gsync. And it overclocks well.

The Alienware 17 R5 you posted is outdone by the refurb 17 R3-5 on the Dell outlet site. With the 15% off coupon, it gets down to evne lower. Hell, there was a 1070 OC laptop on there for a grand.

The Dell G7 15 doesn't have the 10 series option anymore. They're 1650, 1660Ti, 2060 and up. They're an oddly poorer value than the Legion laptops, though you don't have to wait near as long.

That M15 is a good buy for the 2070 MQ version, but the M15 with the 2060 is better on the Dell site. Plus, for $50 more, you get a 240hz screen. That said, I'd say the m15 is tied with the Zephyrus on best splurge, but that's just me.

There's also the Powerspec laptops at Microcenter for best value. The top part is metal, the cooling is fantastic, it has a full 2070, Gsync, ect for $1499 and $1599. And it has a good keyboard. The only issue is the bottom part being plastic. The equivalent PC (which are clevos) are quite a bit more.

Actually, one last one. That HP Omen...is just bad. You literally get better specs for the same price here: https://www.amazon.com/HP-15-Inch-i7-8750H-Processor-15-dc1030nr/dp/B07NDYBX4G/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_3?keywords=HP+Omen+2060&qid=1556725219&s=electronics&sr=1-3-fkmrnull with the 2060.

u/MrDraagyn · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

Yes it's definitely the slime version. It has a max-q version of the GPU so about %20 decrease in ability from the regular 2080 laptop version. This thing will be significantly cooler than the Razer, but it'll still be hot. Its a metal slim and light, it'll run hotter than a full sized gaming laptop, but it'll be super nice and light and more than powerful/reliable for heavy gaming.

The new Razer blade pros are much nicer than the previous Razer laptops, so maybe take a closer look at them. But if you look at the newer zephyrus s laptops, the 2070 is a full laptop 2070 which is about on par with the 2080 max-q better in some cases, not in others. So they have a better price tag:

ROG Zephyrus S Thin and Portable (2019) Gaming Laptop, 15.6" 240Hz G-SYNC FHD IPS, GeForce RTX 2070, i7-9750H, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB PCIe Hyper Drive SSD, Per-Key RGB, Windows 10 Pro, GX502GW-XB76 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SN353GT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tncjDbDXK0YBA

I would definitely get this over your previous option.

u/Shravan9432 · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

I was gonna say the a weorus does look ugly lol. Although aesthetics depend on personal taste these are some which I think look based on popular opinion.

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-AERO-15-W9-RT4P-i7-8750H-Keyboard/dp/B07PP4JFZV/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=aero+rtx+2060&qid=1573736335&sr=8-3

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-8750H-Keyboard-PT515-51-71VV/dp/B07NDVGYZQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=triton+500+rtx+2060&qid=1573736378&sr=8-4

This one is thin, light, great performance, great thermals but has an inverted motherboard. Honestly can't go wrong with it.

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GS65-Stealth-006-Gaming-i7-8750H/dp/B07PHNZBDV/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=msi+gs65+rtx+2060&qid=1573736470&sprefix=msi+gs65+&sr=8-3

One of the sexiest laptops ever made. Doesn't scream gamery but it packs a lot of power in a super thin chassis. Although it might run a little hot (some people have issues with thermals, some say its great... hard to say since I don't own one)

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-9750H-Keyboard-PH315-52-72EV/dp/B07QVM5X91/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=acer+helios+300+rtx+2060&qid=1573736641&sr=8-4

The MVP of 2019. Great laptop although not as thin and light as the previous two. But still a beast and can beat laptops costing much more with raw power. But it looks too gamery.

I'd say Triton > MSI = Helios 300 > Aero.

Hope this helps.

u/FloydWonder · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

Thank you, I think after reading your response I'm definitely going to replace it. I suppose my budget is a little more flexible, if something that's around $2,000 maintains a decent cost-to-performance ratio. $1600 is an ideal that may not be realized.

Found the 17.3" Acer Predator Helios 300 w/ 1660ti / 512GB SSD for $1,249 on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-9750H-Keyboard-PH317-53-7777/dp/B07V4QFKDM/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=acer+predator+helios+300+17%22&qid=1573509298&s=electronics&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=1-6

Also found an ASUS ROG Strix Scar II for $1699 with an 8750H and a full 2070 for $1,699:

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-IPS-Type-GeForce-i7-8750H-Processor/dp/B07N3LGZL9/ref=pd_cp_147_1/138-8260141-5601805?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07N3LGZL9&pd_rd_r=e5d8b08b-fbd2-4d11-b13e-b65d81d48996&pd_rd_w=WwAxw&pd_rd_wg=WbPxn&pf_rd_p=0e5324e1-c848-4872-bbd5-5be6baedf80e&pf_rd_r=VBEYH3ARMGRFV30S3D2Q&psc=1&refRID=VBEYH3ARMGRFV30S3D2Q

There's plenty of stuff in the $2,000 range, but I don't know if roughly 5% gains on performance jumping from an 8750H to a 9750H is worth $300 to me. There would need to be other factors, like greatly improved thermals and color accuracy / display quality to justify it. The SCAR III/Hero is a shining example of this. I'm unsure if the cooling is that much better than the previous chassis to justify itself.

And, quite simply, an RTX 2070 could be overkill for my use case. Just want the least amount of latency possible in a 17.3" frame.

Update: I could also wait until BF for a Lenovo Legion 740 w/ 2070MQ / 256+1T combo storage for $1,279. That may be hard to beat on price per $, even if I am getting a Max-Q card.

Hey, I actually own an HP Omen that's nearly identical in specs to the one you listed.

Screen quality is fantastic. 144hz absolutely makes the difference. The keyboard feels nice, nothing too inventive or interesting but it's functional and keypresses feel nice. The thermal performance is a tad weak though, in my experience. It definitely chucks heat, so invest in extra thermal paste for a re-pasting, and you may also want a cooling pad to lower the temps even further, combined with Intel XTU or ThrottleStop.

As for it's futureproof-ness, I can't say all too much. The 2070 Max-Q plays everything I throw at it on High-Ultra over 60fps, but depending on the game my temperatures will get pretty high.

If you have any questions feel free to reply me and I'll answer whatever I can.

u/Naoki9955995577 · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

Being that they are both mobile chips, you're going to get similar performance out of them both to be completely honest. The 1660 ti does consistently match or slightly edge out the 1070 max q, but if you're comparing just these 2 alone, then neither one is a wrong choice.

I've heard the 10 series mobile gpu have better results overclocking, I haven't heard about the 16, but 20 series doesn't overclock as well as 10 series did. This in my mind makes the 1660ti and the 1070mq mere equals.

When you get a gpu in a laptop it is still lower spec than a desktop. And a max q is performance around 90% of said laptop. Typically a laptop gpu is about 80-90% of the desktop equivalent, putting max q chips at around 70-80% of the desktop equivalent.

In terms of the cpu, they preform near identically and if you care to boot and load things faster than 3s vs 1s, that's the difference between nvme and sata ssds. Look at the thermal performance of the laptops if you can. And btw for $1500 you can get a 2060 non max q and beat these both. You can probably even find a 2070 laptop around that price. I took 5 seconds to find this one:

MSI GV63 8SE-014 15.6" Performance Gaming Laptop NVIDIA RTX 2060 6G, 120Hz 3ms, Intel i7-8750H (6 cores), 16GB, 256GB NVMe SSD+1TB, Red Backlit KB, Win 10, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M64J658/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IVS6Cb7ZCH586

u/Bubaroo3 · 16 pointsr/GamingLaptops

I would do the following to be sure your laptop will last you several years:

  1. Download software to monitor the temp of you CPU and GPU, personally I use MSI Afterburner
  2. If your CPU temps are higher than 85C, consider undervolting using this guide
  3. If your laptop is hooked up to an external monitor, get a laptop stand like this to increase airflow
  4. Every 6 months or so, remove the bottom panel of the laptop, and use compressed air to clear out dust from the internal components

Aside from that, I would also recommend replacing your slow 1TB HDD with a 2.5" SSD. I own a Y740 myself, and I replaced the HDD with this following this guide

Acer Predator Helios 500 PH517-61-R0GX Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Desktop Processor, AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Graphics, 17.3" Full HD 144Hz Radeon FreeSync Display, 16GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GWX5X26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_d9poDbDBW1YPY

I’ve always been interested in going the full blown AMD route, and this one seems to be really good. Everyone talks about how cool it runs, and how the AMD graphics card runs really well. I think I read it’s comparable to a 2060 or 1070 in performance. Worth checking out

u/mamaangry · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

And I would recommend this. It has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB with is pretty awesome!

u/Speedwizard106 · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

I've been researching laptops within your price range for a few weeks now. I keep coming back to this which seems to be the best specs for the price. Features full RTX 2070 (basically the second best laptop gpu you can get), 144hz display, and 17 8750h cpu. It also seems to be on sale for 1799.99, which is the lowest I've ever seen (been checking it pretty much everyday). Theres also this which is the pricier 17" model. It's bigger so probably better cooling/thermals and comes with more storage space.

u/mmmmpisghetti · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

The $1200 Asus with a 1060 I got last November is like 900 now. It's thin and light. I can play Subnautica on high settings. I'm happy.

It does get warm, I use a magnetic [golf ball] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007WLPW0S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PnA5AbBEB44PK) thing that splits in half to prop it up for more airflow. Seems to do the trick and is more portable than a cooler mat. Mine is yellow.

Looks like a pretty okdeal to me to be honest, even a 2TB SSHD, or 1.300 dollars for a 1tb NVMe SSD and 16gb of ram, that's a decent price though for the brand im not sure; never heard of it so im guessing its some chinese seller You can get brand laptops for similar pricing

u/Acebeans · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

Just look around for the best deal you can find that has a 1050 ti. I doubt you'll find anything with a 1060 for under 700. If you can go up a bit you might be able to find a 1060.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Gaming-i5-7300HQ-GeForce-AN515-51-55WL/dp/B074Q54GSR/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526790363&sr=1-2&keywords=1050+ti+laptop

Something like this would be good. I would upgrade the RAM to 16 GB down the road if you can.

u/99K9s · 1 pointr/GamingLaptops

No no no, I don't like the y545 or 1650 or that deal at all.

If you want an i7, Walmart again, has a nice config on y540 (better model) with a 1660ti (much better), and a 144hz screen (much better).

Also, some nice deals on compatible hard drives are popping up on compatible SATA SSDs. I'm partial to Samsung. 860 Evo 1tb for $109 or the great value 860 QVO 1tb for $88. Just saw that so I thought I'd throw those in.

This would be a good choice, and 256Gb is definitely lacking if you have tons of games on your library

I would not suggest getting the laptops listed in your postfor this amount of money purely based on the fact that they have 1050 gpus. Go for the best GPU possible in my opinion.

u/Natzely · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

This thread is about month old so not sure if I'll get a response.

I bought this M.2 Drive for my secondary drive and it did not work. It either would not load windows from the primary after installation or the disk manager would not detect even if the BIOS did. What makes it different than the Crucial M.2 or the Sabrent both which have been claimed to work?

I'm pretty much having this exact issue.

EDIT: I returned the ADATA drive and bought the Sabrent. The Sabrent worked fine when I restarted my computer once after the installation.

Both really gd but I would choose Gx701 this is in same level of razor blade but wait better in my eyes for thermals and performance

In general, you should be looking at a minimum for:

u/witFWD · 5 pointsr/GamingLaptops

I recommend this one better:

It’s called GX502GW, it has a full rtx 2070 unlike that 2080MQ. Moreover this is much newer than the one you link.
Wait for a sale for this one!

At that price, you need to get a full blown rtx card instead of MQ.

Also ASUS are known to be amazing but really really loud. Then again most gaming laptops are inherently loud.

This laptop is awesome, good price, good thermals and a real desktop 8 core ryzen 2700. It might or might not be upgradable to zen2 in the future but in case it gets a bios update the motherboard is capable of supporting up to 65watt tdp processors so in theory it could rock a 3700x, hard to imagine such power on a laptop but even with a 3600 it could destroy every single laptop on the market out there at this price point. It would even trade blows with some of the alienware and msi $4000 i9 9900k laptops. Also the desktop grade AMD vega 56 is quite capable (similar to a 1070), you can expect high performance out of this machine.
The only thing to consider is that the battery life will be bad and this laptop is quite big, thick and heavy if that is something that bothers you.

Hey, I was just looking at that yesterday (same price on Amazon) and trying to decide if I should bite or not! The G703GX is heavily discounted, as is this G701:

https://smile.amazon.com/ASUS-Zephyrus-Validated-i7-8750H-Pro-GX701GX-XS76/dp/B07M9SN4CD/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=asus+zephyrus+s+gx701&qid=1574000969&sr=8-3

So, between the G703GX and the G701, what are people's thoughts? One is a tank and real desktop replacement, one is more mobile. Is there a clear choice between them beyond whether mobility matters to a person?

The G703GX is slightly more upgradable, no?

Helios 500 at 1300$ currently on Amazon is an absolute bargain for the hardware and cooling you get if you don't need high portability and battery life.

Look at the ASUS and Alienware laptops in your price range. Make sure and get a RTX2080, plenty of SSD. Stay away from 4k, look for a monitor at 1440p or 1080p monitory at or above 144hz.

If this is Max-Q, the Eluktronics is better somewhat equal for the same price. More battery, and more SSD space. https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MECH-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07N77H77R. But, no G-Sync.

Edit: G-Sync

The asus is cheaper for me and has better specs but the battery life is terrible and i have heard mixed opinions on the decibel level of the fans under load, some say it gets very loud
