Another vote for the Switch here, primarily because of the exclusives. Nintendo makes a lot of kid-friendly games that you'll only see on Switch, like Mario, Yoshi, Kirby, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, etc.

Nintendo's online service:

  • Is $20/year
  • Gives you cloud saves for most games, so that if anything happens to the Switch, you can still access your save data.
  • Will let you play online for select titles, but requires you to download an app on your phone if you want to voice chat with others.
  • Gives you access to classic NES + SNES games. I imagine most would be challenging for a kid who didn't grow up playing them, but there's an option to "rewind" if you make a mistake or lose a life, and you can do this as many times as you need to. If she's interested in classic games at all, there are some real gems in there. Kirby's Adventure is a pretty easy one that still plays great, I highly recommend it.

As far as online goes, people can be really mean. This sub has endless examples of women who have been mocked, harrased, and even threatened. For that reason, I would be cautious about online play, or at least avoid chat.

That being said, some games have neat features that require online. For example, Animal Crossing (a game where you build your own town), allows you and your friends to visit each other's towns. As long as online play is limited to real-life friends and kid-friendly games, she should be okay. Nintendo is obsessed with family-friendliness and parental controls -- this page on their website is dedicated to parents and keeping kids safe in gaming, if you'd like to have a read.

To save some money, I would suggest getting the Switch and just one game, with an accesory or two. Or, you can keep the accessories in mind for future birthdays and holidays. Some ideas:

  • 1 year online subscription: again, this is useful for online, cloud saves, and access to classic titles, if you feel these things are right for her.

  • A micro SD card: The Switch only has 32 GB of storage space. If you buy digital games, that will get used up quickly. A 128 GB micro SD card costs about $25 CAD, and can be inserted into your Switch so that you can fit mores games on it.

  • A Joy Con Grip: if she likes playing with a controller, this is a great and affordable option for about $20 CAD. Alternatively, this guy makes great quality, officially licensed, wired controllers (and many other Switch accessories) at very affordable prices.

  • A case: so that if she ever plays it in handheld or wants to take it to a friend's house, she has somewhere safe to store it.

  • An Amiibo: These cute little figurines can connect to the Switch, allowing you to unlock things like outfits, power-ups, and other neat extras in the game. This explains how they work in more detail.

    I hope this helps! :)

Plus one for Saga, but I just want to add in a few of my favorite comics because I love these books! Some of these aren't very mainstream, but I hope you guys will give them a try.

  • American Vampire: Pearl Jones is one of my favorite heroines of all time, and the inspiration for my derby name (Pearl Bones). There are a lot of badass women in this series.

  • Fables: filled with princesses who kick ass, and a fun take on classic fairy tales. The first book is meh IMO, but after that the series gets intense and sucks you in. There's also a spinoff focused on the female characters, but I haven't gotten around to checking it out.

  • Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant: short but super fun adventure; you can read the first two chapters for free through that link!

  • Rachel Rising: this series is really dark and gritty, but features a cool variety of women (and witches!). Not for the squeamish.

  • Aya: Life in Yop City: Loosely based on the author's life growing up in the Ivory Coast, it's a slice of life book that I feel offers a refreshing perspective on life in Africa, and it's largely focused on the women living there.

EDIT: For those into manga I also want to add Girls of the Wild's, it's an awesome manhwa about an all girls fighting school. Really funny with a lot of great female characters.

Assassin's Creed is a great game series, but it's pretty violent - you play an assassin, after all. If you want to give it a shot, start with AC2 - it's a much better game than AC1.

Given that you liked Phoenix Wright (oh I do love Feenie.. there need to be more games in that series like yesterday), you could give Ghost Trick a shot. It's got a very similar sort of "feel" to it, though it's a bit more puzzle-y and less investigate-y, if that makes sense. It's by the same folks who did PW, for what that's worth, and I highly enjoyed it. I found the puzzle concepts really neat, too.

And given that you like mystery novels, I recommend 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. Lots of drama, puzzles, decisions, and many different endings. Also lots of reading - it feels more like a book than PW did, to me. I haven't finished this one myself, but it sounds like it might be something you would enjoy. I liked it well enough, it was just more serious that what I was looking for at the time, and I haven't gone back to it yet.

Note, I'm assuming you have a DS of some fashion, since you said you'd played PW; both Ghost Trick and 999 are DS games.

Hope you find something that you enjoy, and happy gaming!

Trying to get active in this sub as I just discovered it yesterday :P

I have varying interests: games, Disney, anime/manga, reading, cats, cute things, Pokemon (my current obsession is Overwatch)...you get the idea. My favorite colors are blue and yellow!

Mine is kinda messy ATM but here it is: http://imgur.com/a/pt7Jv

I hope to move out in the next 2-4 years (hopefully!) so maybe one day my gaming stuff can have its own dedicated space and not all around my bedroom.

I get a lot of my posters from rewards points (past Nintendo rewards and GameStop Power Up rewards). Surprisingly all of my Pokemon plushies came from Tractor Supply Company! I got all the amiibos for under $5 a piece from Best Buy, same with my Funkos but at Barnes and Noble. Thinkgeek has a lot of cool geeky stuff online. My Kiki's Delivery Service came from alexisparade on etsy, if you like anime she has a ton of cool prints for sale! The Pokemon print was something I found in storage, I think I got it at a fair/carnival when I was 5 or 6 haha. My trinkets I usually pick up from Homegoods/Go Fish/Hallmark/Target/yard sales/Etsy/building sets/etc. If there is anything specific that you want to know where it came from, let me know and I can try to find it for you!

As far as furniture, I got my desk and bookshelf from Oak Express (lots of unique options), and the shelves with my consoles on it from Walmart (Ikea has similar ones). My bedroom suit is older than I am so I can't say much about it as I don't much like it but am not allowed to get rid of it. As of lately, Walmart has had some super cute bedding for fairly cheap, but I also seem to find nice stuff at TJMaxx and Bed Bath and Beyond (mine is actually from Vera Bradley as I love their patterns, got it at an outlet for not even 3/4 that price on Amazon. If you can't tell, I love a sale/free stuff lol).

Oh, and I built my own PC but that's a whooleee other story. ;)

u/impendingwardrobe · 2 pointsr/GirlGamers

Princeless is pretty fantastic if you like fantasy. It makes fun of female exploitation in mainstream comics and media. Black princess decides it's stupid to sit around waiting for someone to rescue her, makes friends with the dragon guarding her tower, and sets off to rescue other captured princesses. Kind of fantastic.

u/eggshop · 11 pointsr/GirlGamers

thanks! i got the replacement shells from extremerate on amazon (x, x, x, x, x) and watched a video to help me disassemble my switch. if you're going to do it tho i suggest using your own screwdrivers since the ones they provide are kind of shoddy and can strip the screws easily!

Hi! Thank you very much :) ! Mouse and monitor as requested!

u/LilDarlin · 2 pointsr/GirlGamers

This is my mouse! It feels soooo good in my hands, I have it so the colors are always changing on the side, and I have really liked using it so far!

u/MissReneeee · 3 pointsr/GirlGamers

It's actually pretty cheap to do. $6.99 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/HGLARX-Window-Non-Adhesive-Film-30x200CM/dp/B07S7RWVW8/ref=sr_1_108?crid=1BSYRYZRRYHCC&keywords=window+privacy+film&qid=1567885673&s=gateway&sprefix=window+pri%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-108 is the one I got off of amazon. Plus I have some in my kitchen window for morning rainbows. I just used an exacto knife to trim it. But scissors can do the same.

u/cassinpants · 4 pointsr/GirlGamers

I have the Cloud Cores and really like them. I used to work at Gamestop and they're basically the only headset I'd recommend at the sub-$100 price range. Everything else just feels cheap, uncomfortable, or poorly made in my experience.

As far as I know, the Cloud Stingers are the lower end option. The problem with them is that they're plastic, so they're a lot less durable than HyperX's other offerings.

On Amazon.ca, the CloudX is $85 CDN: https://www.amazon.ca/HyperX-CloudX-Official-Detachable-HX-HS5CX-SR/dp/B07FVWJ6YR/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=hyperx%2Bcloud%2Bcore&qid=1572484587&sr=8-7&th=1

I believe this version will include the y-cable you need to connect to a PC. The only difference then from the generic Cloud Core is the colorway and the in-line controls as far as I can tell.

Still a little over your ideal range but I swear by these. I've sold them to many customers and never had any return them. Mine have been going strong for at least two years.

5 foot 5.5 inches and I'm heavy. I don't do gaming chairs (nothing against them just never found them practical). I just do general office chairs and I look for one that rated around 50-100 lbs more then I am. I also look for chairs with a metal base since I find them more durable. As for my feet not reaching that isn't a problem for me because I use the desk foot rests because I find I am more comfortable with my feet elevated an extra 6-8 inches. I generally try to find office chairs that are rated for at least 6-8 hour a day sitting because they are built sturdier. I'm a very utilitarian type gal. I can't even tell you what my current chair is because I have no clue but I did get it from an office store since they rate their chairs by hours of usage so you know the durability before you buy. This isn't the exact foot rest brand I have but it is similar. Maybe it will help with the whole feet not meeting the ground thing. https://www.amazon.com/Under-Non-Slip-Ergonomic-Footrest-Cushion/dp/B01BRU9CDW/ref=sr_1_25?qid=1574657430&s=office-products&sr=1-25

My hand is small and i use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Gaming-Programmable-Controls-910-002358/dp/B005EWB3AU Logitech g300 it have 9 programmable buttons. I play mostly mmos with it.

u/liamquips · 1 pointr/GirlGamers

I use http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Kana-Optical-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B005M2KSLC/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1344968421&sr=1-2&keywords=steelseries+kana.

It's not the smallest (it's Steelseries' midsize) but prior to using it I used a wireless logitech M305, which is quite small. Upgrading to the larger one (after using an M305 for 6 years or so) was no trouble. It's lightweight and the right shape for my hand.

My only complaints about the Kana are the lack of extra buttons (beyond 2) and the cord- I really miss wireless. However if you're going to game with a corded mouse (and the increased sensitivity is worth it) best to use a braided cord (far fewer snags) like with the Kana.

My husband uses the Deathadder and I find it to be too large. I don't have tiny hands but for my playstyle it's just a bit too unwieldy. (and as for mice being too heavy, the deathadder weighs a pound).

I know steelseries offers a smaller mouse (the kinzu) but I don't believe it has extra buttons.

The Headset + Mixamp bundle comes in at $249. I currently just use it for console, but if you wanted to use it for both (having it plugged into both console and pc) you would need to do some rigging.

If I'm correct , essentially you would need to purchase something like below. The theory is the Micro end USB would plug into the mixamp. While the other two regular sized USB's would plug into your PS4 with the other one plugged into the PC. *Disclaimer - not 100% this method would work, I would advise looking at the manual for this particular set up or sending an email to customer service. https://www.astrogaming.com/content/dam/astro/en/support/qsg/mixamp-tr-gen-4/astro-webqsg-mixamp-pro-tr-gen4-ps4-amr-rev004.pdf
