For my doodle, BioSilk Therapy Detangling and Shine Spray has been a lifesaver - makes brushing out the tangles/mats a heck of a lot easier (also lessens the pain for your pup!)

Remember when you brush you shouldn't just brush one way... you need to go backwards, sideways, pretty much every angle to make sure you aren't missing any mats tight up against the skin. I recommend using a comb with different bristle lengths and different types of brushes.. after experience, you'll know which one is best for each situation.

Depending on your pup, different sections will need more attention than others. My girl gets bad tangles behind and on her ears, her face/cheeks, on top and bottoms of paws, and collar/harness area. I brush those areas more frequently than everything else.

Also, reward him/her with a treat after each brushing! At this point, right when we're finished brushing, my dog trots over to the closet and stares at me expecting her treat :)

Thank you!

We've been combing him with:

Pro Quality Self Cleaning Slicker Brush for Dogs and Cats - Easy to Clean Pet Grooming Brush Removes Mats, Tangles, and Loose Hair with Minimal Effort and Comfort - Suitable for Long or Short Hair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DMRF81Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mt.EDbPW8WXCH

I don't think he likes it very much and it seems to be a tiny bit painful for him so we let him lick frozen treats during his combing. It works (?) though.

For shampoo, we've been using:

Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo, Vanilla & Almond, 16 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002IEYIE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vu.EDbNR9VDN3

It seems okay (?).

I would definitely love any tips on how to maintain a healthy coat as he's turning eight months old in a couple of weeks! Also, may I ask how often you clean your doodle's ears and teeth? Thank you :)

u/asvinni · 2 pointsr/Goldendoodles

Yeah definitely, the curlier the coat the more maintenance it needs. He’ll probably need to get groomed at least every 4 or even 5 weeks. I highly recommend this book From scruffy to lovely. How to keep your Doodle healthy, happy and tangle free?: The ultimate guide to Labradoodle grooming and care https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XT75VF7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SbfoDbGCF8B50

It has helped tremendously with my doodle’s coat care and grooming. I’m learning to groom him on my own, not only to save money, but he is more comfortable.

We do a most of the grooming for our doodle.

In regards to brushes/combs, you'll need a paddle brush, a metal comb, a de-matting rake, and a slicker brush to take care of most tasks. You won't really need a shedding rake.

If you're interested in cutting your guys hair, I would suggest getting a set of electric clippers and get a larger blade, like a size 4FC to start out. I don't suggest trying to use the plastic guards because their hair gets caught in them a bunch and it's a mess. We use a pair of scissors and a plastic comb to trim up his face, feet, and crotch area. I also suggest a set of thinning shears to even things out after the regular scissors or clippers. Overall, don't be afraid to just go for it. The hair grows back and you can't really screw it up too bad. A few times our guy looked like a junkyard dog after we gave him a trim, but we managed to clean it up after a few tries. The clippers may seem expensive, but a good professional grooming around us is $80, so they've paid for themselves at this point.

Baths are pretty straightforward. If he's not too afraid of a blow dryer, use one to speed up the drying process.

Bully sticks work well. They smell a little but it's better than needle sharp teeth on your fingers non stop. The pups like them so it's easy to substitute a bully stick for a finger. We tried other stuff but these seemed to work best for us. Hold the stick on one one end and let them chew on the other while they sit in your lap.

Eventually you'll want a slicker brush and a de-matting comb but you won't need them right away.
I like this one because the button on the back makes cleaning it easy.

I have a goldendoodle and a bernedoodle... keeping the cars clean were a nightmare until we got one of these! Super easy to put in; there are loops that just go around the headrests. It has definitely saved the upholstery in our back seats.

I use these Andis clippers & so far they have been great! & make sure to pick up some good clipper oil too

If you get one and it grows to look this this: https://imgur.com/a/lDzIvUj

Then this is your friend: https://www.amazon.com/Oster-18-Tooth-Coarse-Shedding-Brush/dp/B00061MWJ0

Light brush (5-10 mins) a night keeps on top of everything.

We know a few others and they all seem to be very social animals - love family and other dogs.

This is the exact one I purchased for my dog. You should start out as early as possible with it... There are smaller sizes, they aren't too expensive so you can size up as needed and they are very adjustable. Good luck!! This is a link to the petsafe brand med/lg size with reflective stitching, and it comes with a leash.

I use elk antlers, my goldendoodle is obsessed with them, but won't destroy and eat it like rawhide, and it doesn't splinter like bone, the more they chew it gets softer and when it starts to deform you just throw it away, but that takes quite a while compared to other organic chews

We use this one for every-day quick grooming https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ICB3OWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_FdcnnQb318fFR

And this one about twice a week for dematting

Edit: The dematting tool is worth the money

Have you seen the Kong harness? That’s what we use and it’s extremely adjustable. https://www.amazon.com/KONG-Comfort-Padded-Harness-Medium/dp/B071NS1Q9P

u/EragonShade98 · 2 pointsr/Goldendoodles

We brush her 1-2 times a day and we use this tool:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OIP3QEU/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We also bathe her once a week and every other day we spray her with a puppy deodorizer. Lemme know if you want that info too.

Edit: She has naturally wavy hair, not curly hair like her poodle mother. More of her father I assume.
