>Good laptop to run GW2?
-
>I'm thinking of getting a laptop to run gw2. Any idea what video card I should be using? How much ram, speed of CPU, and storage space the laptop should have?
Been playing Guild Wars 2 on laptops for nearly 5 years now, I got you. You don't need much space (~40GB free for GW2 is plenty), and you don't need much RAM (game only seems to use around 3GB of RAM anyway). But I'm going to assume you're not ONLY using this for Guild Wars 2. I'm going to assume you want a laptop that can actually not be crappy when you decide to try something else.
Note: If it doesn't have an SSD (solid state drive), you're going to want to buy one and install it anyway. They're definitely worth the investment, the time it saves you loading or waiting for updates alone is tremendous. You might as well buy one with an SSD installed, to save yourself the hassle, but it's totally your call. Larger laptops have a second bay for a hard drive too, or you can replace the DVD bay (if any) with a hard drive or SSD by using an adapter that fits to the optical disc bay. Or just use an external hard drive for backups, or some kind of cloud service... or use nothing but the SSD, if you don't plan on having sensitive data saved locally on the laptop.
since the latest refresh was crazy nice (Nvidia 1080 would be best).
Note: I'm not an Nvidia/Intel fanboy, and I know the benchmark sites above are user-submitted (definitely not perfect). However, Guild Wars 2 generally seems to be a lot less buggy on Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs. I'm sure AMD's alternatives are working fine for many people, so they're worth considering to save some money. I just wouldn't want to risk it personally, especially with that much money on the line. I advise against getting anything from AMD for GW2 if you can help it. Also, I've never owned an Nvidia card that failed, and I've never owned an AMD card that didn't fail. So I am biased, but for good reason.
Now, since you haven't given a pricepoint, or a size limit, I'll just start from the top:
$9000
$6000
$4700
$3700
$3100
$2650
$2400
$1900
$1800
$1650
$1580
Be sure to note the screen size (usually 15" or 17") and resolution (usually 4K vs 1080p), if those things matter to you. Guild Wars 2 does not scale nicely for 4K screens, so the user interface will be very small unless you use an external monitor or lower your laptop's resolution. It's honestly a huge waste to get a 4K laptop if you can't stand the tiny UI for Guild Wars 2, and need to lower it to 1920x1080 anyway. And sometimes you can save some cash by choosing a 1080p option instead of the 4K model, so keep that in mind. Also, some have 2x GPU... needless to say, you don't need two high-end GPUs for playing Guild Wars 2.
If money is no object, and you don't need to actually move it much, get one of the $3000+ models. If you were hoping for something closer to $1000-2000, or something that isn't super heavy and huge, my recommendation is to get a laptop with a 1070 GPU. The difference in price is much, much larger than the difference in performance. If you were hoping for something at $1000 or less, go hunt down a laptop with a 980m and high-grade quad core i7 on ebay. Since Guild Wars 2 is going to mostly bottleneck on the processor anyway, you can get a sub-$1000 laptop that performs perfectly this way. People are practically giving away the 980m gaming laptops now that the 1080 is out (it was a pretty big performance bump this refresh, the 1080 was around 20-50% better across various benchmarks). Or you could go for an AMD model... you'll probably have time to decide if you like the way it performs within the return period anyway. However, make sure you get a good 3-4 year warranty, as you'll probably need it.
To add to what doug4130 said, I would suggest investing in an inexpensive gaming mouse. If you really like MMOs, it's totally worth it. You can get a decent 5 button mouse on Amazon for pretty cheap. This is the mouse I use and it's just $40.00. If that's too expensive even going with something like this for $20.00 will really enhance your play experience.
Look at it this way, you spent $60 on a game you can't play right now. You can either eat the loss, or put up another $20 which may help you a ton.
This game definitely requires a lot more skill than WoW. That's a simple fact. However, once you get the hang of it you can pretty easily do any PvE content, it's just the higher level Fractals and some dungeons you'll have problems with. However, a good mouse that you can set a lot of hotkeys on will, I promise you, help a ton.
They aren't very popular but the Corsair M60 (and matching keyboard K60, along with the M/K 90 for MMOs) is an awesome mouse... I love it. Very comfortable, solid construction, and visually appealing.
I also used to use a Logitech G9, another great mouse but a bit small for my hands.
Yeah. The Superluxx Solution with an external Mic is absolutely awesome and beats any Complete HS far 150 USD.
You can go the "New" Variant what costs a bit more:
HS: HD 681 Evo
Mic: Reloop
With this Combination youve got a real Headset Style, cause the Microfone will sit Right were other Mics are on the regular Headsets.
Now to the "Classic" Combination, cheaper but no loss in Quality:
HS: HD 681
Mic: Zalman Mic1
With both Solutions youre ready to go.
Only thing to Mention. You WILL need Soundcard with Headset Amplifier such as:
for PCI Slot: Xonar DG
for PCI-Ex Slot: Xonar DgX
Both are Equal in Sound Quality, take the one who fits in your computer, and then:
Enjoy awesome Sound :)
pre purchased on amazon july 2012 and character creation was on launch day; I got the hard cover guide as "suggested by amazon" that I still have to this day. It had a neat map atlas bonus, a top spiral binding book that stayed up when you left it on your desk.
Great to get all of those hearts and vistas early.
edit: this thing.
Not sure what your number would be for ruining your wallet, but I have this laptop and it runs it perfectly fine (everything isn't on max, but mostly all high) but it is 15.6" screen https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CWBM1B9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So if you need the 17" then this would be good: https://www.amazon.com/HP-17-inch-Anti-Glare-i7-8750H-17-an120nr/dp/B07D961VDH/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1549469271&sr=1-4&keywords=gaming+laptop&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A7817234011
this might be our only hope! Thanks for finding the link :)
EDIT: They now have the standard edition available, which I bought

Here's a Link for your viewing pleasure. I got mine for a birthday gift from a friend 3 years ago and have never looked back.
I too suffer with the small hands-mostly console gamer problems. I am luckily a righty so I have a few less issues.
I stumbled upon this lovely and affordable mouse that looks like it should work equally well for a lefty or righty.

It is the perfect number of keys for me to move my utilities, heal and special action all onto the mouse, idk if this helps at all but I hope this thread gives some solutions :D

It's the strategic guide that was published at release time back in 2012. It also exists in hardcover though I never saw this version in Europe.
Though most of the stuff is now outdated due to many change and game rework in term of maps change or additions (this predates the Southsun release), skills or class mechanics since release, it contains lots of nice artwork, and interesting side-development info like how Tengu could have been a playable race at release.
If you have USB3 connectors on your Air (ie. got it after mid 2012) you can get a regular SSD hard-drive and an USB3 enclosure. I use this SSD and this enclosure. Total cost for both should be under $50.
If not, then you will need to add a Thunderbolt to USB3 adapter (assuming you don't use the Thunderbolt connector for something already), which are quite expensive and please make sure you get it from a vendor with good return policy because there's no guarantee the adapter will work with a USB3 SSD enclosure.
Also, have you considered upgrading the hard-drive in your Air?
That's a pretty bad plan man theres cheaper laptops that do and dont have a GPU the most important think for gaming on a computer better to just give a budget

I highly recommend a gameboard like the Logitech G13.
I have all my skills bound to the Gkeys on it, movement bound to the thumbstick, and jumping, diving, targeting and interaction controls bound to my mouse (a Logitech G700).
I'd recommend a reasonably fast SSD and an USB3 enclosure. I've been very pleased with this enclosure.
I recently bought this mouse and am very happy with it. I shied away from mice like the g600 because they had far more buttons than I wanted. The buttons have distinct shapes to avoid misclicking.
For the lazy

I ordered up this funky piece for forward movement and strafing:

I'll still have Nostromo D-pad, but hopefully not nearly as much thumb cramping
It looks like they've moved to only doing digital sales. The Skyrim soundtrack on there is digital only (used to have a physical copy available as well). Maybe they don't have the rights to sell GW2 as a digital soundtrack for some reason.
I wonder if ordering through this page would still work. Failing that, it looks like Amazon has one third party seller with a copy, or you could look elsewhere (eBay?) for people reselling their copies.
Lots of useful information. I'm going to get xbox one controller working with windows 7, 8, 8.1. Is it possible to plug into controller logitech headset with usb plug? or it has to be 3.5mm mini-jack? Im using windows 7 if it matters. Update to a question from last night - I've been looking into getting a new gaming laptop, and was suggested the Acer Predator Helios 300, with Nvidia GTX 1060 and 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. Does anyone have any experience with running GW2 on this laptop or graphics card / processor, and if so how well did it run? I'm mostly hoping to be able to run high settings consistently without dropping below ~30fps or so, even in raids or fractals.
Did some search think last one from ama de

I got lucky enough to win a steelseries shift in a contest but don't have any of the keysets for MMO/FPS/etc just the default keyboard. but remapping is always a PitA & trying to learn to use the mouse as a righty this late in my life is an all but fruitless endeavor lol...there's some gimmicky looking pieces out there for ambidexterous gaming for example Warrior Gaming Keypad or the Ideazon Fang Gamepad. but spending upwards of $40 (if it can be found @ all) for a glorified numberpad is not ideal to say the least.
Yup, I like it. If it ever dies, this seems like a logical replacement, but I'll miss the two thumb buttons! This looks cramped.

I think so, I bought it from Amazon Digital Services LLC, using the link below:

You can still get it elsewhere, for example Amazon has a digital version where they give you a serial code.
edit: Make sure you choose PC Download, should be on it by default with the link above, but just in-case.
I bought a gem code in a physical DVD box on amazon.de as a christmas present and it worked flawlessly.
You pay a bit more for the "physical" gems though than in-game.
Well.... here's some great mice for under your $50 minimum. The Logitech 300 series (300, 302, 303) are all 20-40 and are my personal recommendation if you're on a budget.
