Hi reddit, techlist here.

We've got to applaud the abundance of caution expressed in this thread, if not the all of the logic.

This survey is pretty close to the opposite of an attempt to collect and exploit user credentials; it is an academic experiment with a top Internet security researcher, who has also been a partner on a number of past techlist HITs.

In fact, you'll find one of our past experiments on Amazon, in this collection of papers (protip: search inside)

Turkers should definitely not be using their actual PINs or passwords on this task, or, of course, sharing them with anyone else for any reason.

The HIT does request that you think of a PIN and password that you would consider to be strong enough for online banking or the like (not "1234" and "pa55w0rd"), and yet memorable enough to not write down (not a long string of random characters you immediately forget).

The rest of the task is focused on choosing words that relate to memorable personal stories. The thousands of submissions so far, as usual, overwhelmingly seem to be thoughtful, honest efforts that are of real value to the research project. So, thanks again.

For those who haven't yet dared, we'd be grateful for your help, as the survey is still running. The results will be written up and we look forward to sharing more details when we can.

If you ever have a concern about one of our HITs, the most reliable way to reach us is via email: mturk at techlist.com (or, yes, mturk.techlist at gmail). There are many more of you than there are of us, but we do try to respond, especially when there is any question of safety or propriety.

Cheers,
techlist

PS, Just for the irony, here's an email we just got earlier in the week from Google:

Same here. I'm so glad I actually started taking it seriously. A good $300-$350 extra per month will be fantastic.

Here's what it yielded for fathers day :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096IQZ8S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
