Although yeah 3d printing isn't the cheapest hobby, it doesn't have to be too pricey either. Unless you were aware of it already, I wanted to let you know you can get a decent printer these days and a set of tools and filament, at least enough to get started comfortably, for under $400 total. And if you are fortunate enough to have more cash than that, you can find your bang-for-buck scales pretty linearly above and beyond, there are many great printers out there for people of all income levels.
Back when I was in college, I paid ~$350 for just the printer kit I had to assemble, being able to buy a (mostly) assembled printer for just two-thirds the price that has over 8x the build volume and a heated bed is awesome.
It is a hobby that is accessible to almost anyone who can scrap together a one-time cash investment and has some spare desk space at home. It's very cheap to design and print small models, a single spool lasts quite awhile as long as you don't do anything too crazy. Although it's fair to say while it can be cheap to operate in dollars, it can be quite time expensive!
Not to mention if you're clever it can save you money in the long run if you use it to repair your stuff, although I wouldn't expect it to pay for itself right away unless you break things a lot :)
Yeah, I don't actually recommend it unless you have a lot of disposable income. Valve was going for "highest quality VR experience available" and not "affordable". If you want a good VR headset on a reasonable budget, you probably want a Rift S($399), a used Vive ($400), or an Odyssey Plus( $349).
Vive and Odyssey plus have a better refresh rate. Vive is the hardest to set up, but has the most robust hand tracking, followed by the Rift S, followed by the Odyssey plus, which have progressively narrower zones of hand tracking. The Odyssey plus does have the nicest screen in terms of resolution of all three, so that's a significant advantage.
Oh, and don't get the Rift S if you have unusually widely or narrowly set eyes. The lack of hardware IPD adjustment really sucks for the far ends of the bell curve there.
You don’t need to grab the very best headset. Early this year they announced that it would work with all VR headsets support on steam, that includes the very good US$320 Samsung Odyssey US$320 Samsung Odyssey, or other Windows Mixed Reality headsets for even cheaper that still provide an incredible VR experience.
If you like a GPU analogy, WMR headsets are like the GTX 1660 to the Valve Indexs RTX 2080ti.

Recommended to go with the "Good".
Here it is! As far as we can tell, it's currently running at 1080p, 60hz. It looks fantastic. It's also entirely portable and has a lot of features.
EDIT: According to the amazon page, it doesn't do 1080p. However, it just said so on the screen. Not sure about that one. Still looks great though.
I think this originally appeared in Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar. It only had a short print run, but PDF copies are floating around the web. It's a pretty neat book on the making of HL2.
it ran alright on 360. maybe it's just because I came from the original Xbox and immediately started playing Episode 1 the next day on 360, but it felt really smooth and looked great.
to drag it back to PS3, you can get IDES for $30 with Prime shipping on Amazon. linky
I'll share what I sent him.
> Thank you for reaching out to us - the community. We're sad and frustrated at the lack of news with our favorite franchise. Because of you, we haven't been banging our heads against a brick wall. You've responded to us, to me time and time again. I'm sorry if I've bugged you.
> Obviously, your retirement will stir uncertainty in the Half-Life community. Even I'm a tad worried now; will we ever find out what happens next? Will Valve ever talk to us about the fabled franchise? I fear that with your parting there will no longer be any communication about it. All I hope is that in the end, one day we will all know what on earth happened.
> Gaming is like story telling of the future. We're not sat around campfires anymore, but it's the same principle. A universe created in another's imagination is projected and shared. We invest ourselves in these universes; they exist in all of those that would consume them. Alas, it saddens me to see you leave our campfire.
> What conclusion to the story will the community create for itself I wonder? Writers are so under appreciated these days. That's the problem when you create a universe this compelling I guess. The universe is all people see!
> Do keep writing Marc and all the very best to you :)
He thanked me and denied nothing. Really great guy. I'm considering picking up one of his books, notably the 37th Mandala.
I can only speak for Nvidia. The absolute cheapest is the Geforce 970, which you can find on eBay for less than $150. Climbing above that, the 1050ti and the 1060, which you can find renewed for around $150-200 would be a good bet. The 1660 is also about mid-range when it comes to VR and they hover around $200. Beyond that, any in the 2000 series will run VR, and of course, the absolute best would 2070 or 2080.
Yes! They’re only about 30 US dollars on Amazon, and it’s a good quality action figure!

I would actually recommend a A4tech XL-750BK.
It´s cheap, good, durable, has a macro button, is pretty configurable and come on, why on earth would you need a DPI higher than 3200 ;)
If the orange button annoys you, just bind it to left click.
I have both his books, Tales from the Loop and Things from the Flood and they're both very nicely printed. There's a relatively short story for each as well that isn't particularly interesting, but definitely fleshes out his world a little more and connects the art all together a little bit.
I emailed Marc last night asking him about this, and he recommended The Third Force: A Novel of Gadget. A lot of concepts he still had in mind when creating Half-Life are used here, so I'll definitely check it out when I get the chance, and you should too.
Here's the mouse of question, by the way. I'm actually getting it because it's affordable and has a good options for dpi (my current mouse requires a lot of other shit just to change it's low dpi) and has the amount of buttons I'm looking for (6) in good spots (I like to have a button on the side for my mic.) Also, pretty colors.
I dont have a degree is computer science, so parhaps you do know better than me, :-D
However, I was under the impression that SSL 256 had been broken using some obscure MIM attack vector which messed with time codes. Perhaps I have it mixed with another encryption.
But my original point is to say that stating modern encryption is unbreakable is a naive point to make. You will know that almost every level of encryption has at some point had that statement made against it until a new way to crack it appears overnight.
I read a great book which you might want to read: The Code Book by Simon Singh Linky!

About $540 USD, cheaper 2nd hand headsets around as well.
You might. In my situation, I use this bad boy to wirelessly use my 360 controller. It works pretty well. I believe you have to install some drivers, but it's not that difficult.
Here is a Link to the figure but you cant really buy it from here. I found it in an FYE a year or two ago for like $20
You said you upgraded it as well. And you must have a PC tower or something to do this as well. This is all my phone costs and it takes pictures like a hot damn.
Edit: And I'm curious what those upgrades are, because I might buy one of those.
UK prices seem to be around £60 - £150 ($90 - $225), where the highest going price was for a sealed copy.
Might be more results in the US. Hop onto eBay, go to the advanced search, and tick the "completed listings" box as part of your search.
Edit: on Amazon US, the sensible used ones are going for betwen $70 and $190, depending on condition. That doesn't necessarily mean they're actually getting sold at those prices, of course.

Is this it, I'm t0m_serv0's wife I wanna get this for him for a gift...
Here it is on Amazon.
The only place that seems to have them left is Amazon, but the price isn't that great :(
Raising the bar is a book filled with concept art. Unfortunately, its pretty hard to find a new copy, unless you are willing to spend $100+ dollars. Used ones are still viable at $50+/-.
As far as I know, no books exist based on the game.
Samsung Odyssey+ $239

There are cheaper WMR headsets but they aren't as good
You can get a decent VR HMD for around 250-300 dollars right now used. VR isn't super expensive like it was 3 years ago.
