On the suspension question - It's fine, the slap straps are strong and do their job. The downside is that the loops on the slap straps are about every 6 inches, so it might be hard to get that "just right" hanging... I used the slap straps for my first year and I was fine, I'd focus on other aspects for the time being. One other quick point, if you are looking to cut weight down the carabiners that come with the ENO are steel and heavy, those are easily replaced. If you want to get into more weight cutting and more advanced suspension system I would look at the whoopie sling, that's what's en vouge right now, I just got my slings but have not had a chance to use them yet.

just like satty said, you're going to lose warmth rating due to compression on the sleeping bag. I find this true with down and synthetics alike. Unlike sleeping on the ground you're going to really feel the wind if it's cold and windy. I can vividly remember freezing through a 30 degree night in a 30 degree bag with no sleeping pad. Sleeping pads will help a lot, so would a UQ. I just saw the pea pod setup a month ago on here, and I'm dying to try it out, let us know how it works out!

a tarp or a rainfly, properly rigged, should keep rain out in 'normal weather'. that tent looking tarp you found looks cool, not sure exactly what it is... I know that some people rave about the warbonnet tarps, I bought a ENO tarp when I got my hammock, I wish I had gotten a warbonnet in hindsight, but the ENO works fine for me. It's nice to have the privacy as well as the wind guard, so I usually use the tarp even in good weather.

Enjoy the hammock and take some pictures for us!

I'll second the Brazilian hammock suggestion. I'm a warm sleeper and the all-cotton nature seems to be the most comfortable to me.

I've slept in a Mayan as well, which is also very comfortable. I don't care for the materials used in camping hammocks, though, so those are off
my list.

I use a small pillow behind my head and a tiny pillow under my knees. I also was a stomach sleeper, but find I can sleep quite comfortably on my back diagonally on a hammock. The head being slightly higher helps.

I don't bolt mine into the walls. I have a compact hammock stand. It's similar to this one. I find a good cotton Brazilian hammock will last about a year or year and a half and then I replace it when it gets too stretched out or some of the strings start fraying. You can buy a good one for $50-125 though, which I think is reasonable for a year's worth of good sleep.

I have an 11' NylonD in Olive Green. So much more comfortable than the short 8.5ft hammock I bought from Amazon. Much nicer material too.

Here's a picture of my NylonD with my Best Man's Red/Black ENO DoubleNest and another groomsman's Yukon Outfitters Black/Gray Double.

I put together my own suspension: 2 Omega Pacific Rappelling Rings on Dutchware 15" Amsteel Continuous Loops at each end, paired with Dutchware 12' Polyester Tree Straps and Black Diamond Positron Bent Gate carabiners.

I'm considering swapping out the 15" Amsteel loops for 8" loops. The extra length really isn't necessary.

can't recommend these guys enough

Great Hammock from a smaller company with great customer service, Hammock & Straps for under 50 bucks. I've camped out of it and like it more than my Grand Trunk setup.

u/madmatttt · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

Thanks for the info guys, I got some private messages and that combined with your comments helped me pick out this to go with my Eagle's Nest Outfitter's Doublenest Hammock. I'll be putting... well, something! underneath the metal support bars to protect my hardwood floors.

Thanks everybody!

u/jim51riffe · 1 pointr/Hammocks

Dude I have this and it fits my eno doublenest perfectly. It also comes with a pretty nice cotton hammock. I sleep in it every night. Can take down and set up in like 5 minutes.

Check into Hennessy Hammocks. They're well built. I use an ENO but several friends have Hennessy and love them.

Here's one for reference

I bought this hammock from amazon and used it as my bed for a few months. At first, it was pretty cool having a hammock as a bed. After a few days I realized the stand wasn't suitable for sleeping in every night; I couldn't find a comfortable enough position to be able to have restful sleep.

I eventually bought a new hammock to see if it was the original hammock that was the issue. Well, this new hammock was even more uncomfortable when I mounted it on the stand I had. In fact, the stand that came with the first hammock wasn't compatible with the new hammock; I had to buy some tree straps so that the new hammock would sit right on the new stand.

It was really hard sleeping on my hammock setup; I was sad as I really wanted it to work for me. I'm sure if I created my own stand that actually worked for my height I would have had no problem sleeping. Eventually I bought a Tri Fold Mattress and a memory foam pad and just slept on that instead of the hammock; the Tri Fold + Memory foam combo is perfect! Best sleep of my life on that thing.

If you're going to buy a hammock to use as a bed, I would highly recommend making, or even buying, a hand-made stand that fits your height and weight.

I'm 6'0", ~154lbs

Also, If you're going to buy a hammock to sleep on I would highly recommend having a secondary sleeping station (possibly a pad of some sort) for those days where you just don't want to sleep on the hammock. Trust me, those days will come. I didn't think it would happen to me, but it did. If you have any other questions I'll gladly answer them! Unfortunately I can't give you information about wall hooks/mounting as I never went that route.

Literally any brand will work just fine. Bear butt and about 200 other brands are all made in the same factory. SOURCE: I sold the same hammock as Bear Butt for a while under my own PL Brand.

I've had the crappiest version the factory makes $7 (my cost) hanging up outside near the pool for over 4 years. Rain, freezing, hurricane force winds. It finally got it's first small tear this week. Sure the blue part has faded some, but any hammock will be just fine. Buy a generic $30 hammock off amazon. Most of them all come from the Goodwin factory in china and there's very little difference between many of the brands.

This $18 hammock on Amazon is similar to the one I have hanging up outside and is probably from the same factory as Bear Butt (they do get premium stitching and some nicer things added) https://www.amazon.com/ARAER-Mosquito-Capacity-Lightweight-Backpacking/dp/B07FSLZBZZ/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1541493306&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=camping+hammock&psc=1

So if your worried just hang an $18 hammock outside and save your fancy ones for camping.

u/wayfarer650 · 1 pointr/Hammocks

I have this stand from Amazon and it's been great for $45. It's made up of 5 tube pieces that break down for storage - mine stays under the bed much of the time. I think it's 9 feet tip-to-tip, so you can still get a pretty good hanging angle.

u/cyberjedi42 · 9 pointsr/Hammocks

Hey, a fellow fat hanger! I am 6'5 and 350. Been sleeping 100% on a hammock for over 4 years now.

First, I started off with the hammock stand that /u/Nicktav already linked to (Amazon Link). I used this for about a year. I actually bent it over time. Got another one, bent it too, then decided to do something else.

Next, came this. And this has been going three years strong.

I love it!! No issues with me and this misses (and even the little one) all in at the same time.

The the picture is a bit out of date. I hung a TV on the left wall, so I can hang and watch before sleeping.

The hammock I use is the Grand Trunk Double. 4 years of 350lb nightly sleeping and it hangs like new.

Don't be intimidated by one of the most rewarding parts of camping, ie.. playing around with rope and stuff.

Just get some and start practicing knots, it's big fun and a very useful skill to have.

Check out this site for some decent instructions on setting things up, and even how to make some stuff your self and save gobs of cash.

Two books on knots I can recommend that aren't prohibitively expensive are this and this. That 60 dollar price is wrong, I don't know what's up with that, but that books should be around 16-20 bucks.

Of course this is the 'bible' of knots, though a bit pricier. I don't own it, but wish I'd gotten it instead of those other two.. meh.

A word of warning.. If you start asking about hammocks, someone is going to point you toward the hammock forums. I won't tell you to avoid that forum, but be careful there. There are some dubious characters there, and the forum as a whole will steer you in the wrong direction for sure.

Pick and choose, especially if you have more time than money.

I wouldn't buy anything from any of the members, or any of the 'cottage industries' often linked there. Their ethics being questionable, at best.

u/GrandWazoo42 · 9 pointsr/Hammocks

I'd figure a way to hang the liner under the hammock like a UQ. Clips like these are great for this purpose. https://www.amazon.com/EasyKlip-4101-220lbs-Black-4-Count/dp/B0039YOMBC

u/kinetogen · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

Yes. (You will end up wet from Dew-fall, and they protect you from bird shit.) Bare minimum, I'd take something like this with. They can sometimes be found for $20 on WOOT, just gotta keep an eye out. I own one. Decent tarp for $20, probably wouldn't pay $40 though, because you can buy a Hennessy Hammock - Hex Rainfly for $62 and it's a great tarp. A bit on the heavier side, but if you're not doing the whole hiking thing and just car camping, it's sturdy and very big.

u/dcs619 · 1 pointr/Hammocks

Better is entirely subjective. Do you want a brand that everyone else has or are you fine being a lone wolf? I've had a Hammaka Double for 10 years and never once had an issue with it. I've heard people recommend the Bear Butt Double too.

+1 for the double, whatever brand you get. It's nice to have the extra diagonal space if you're tall.

u/Landoperk · 3 pointsr/Hammocks

I use these. I actually store my tarp in it but it can be used for anything. The XL fits my 12ft tarp perfectly.

Definitely feels a lil sketchy getting into it, but fantastic hammock for the price.

u/dancing-lobsters · 1 pointr/Hammocks

I bought a Best Choice Products 10' Hammock Stand (link is here). It fits my Eno Single hammock (except I really just stick the carabiners on the top of the U-hook instead of getting my hammock straps out and configured. I don't lay low to the ground - Can bring it outside and configure a rain tarp over it if I want to.

u/snoogins355 · 1 pointr/Hammocks

I got an OuterEQ Hammock as a reddit secret santa gift a few years ago. I use it all the time for chilling after work or taking a break on a day hike in the woods. The bag it comes in functions as a pocket when you use it, perfect for holding a beer and whatever essentials you need for chilling.

u/tahudswork · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

Could I use a good down bag like this one and over that put a and then put over that a reflective bivy?

u/hybridsole · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

These

I purchased these as an upgrade to my eno doublenest. While there are probably better carabiners out there, there are few as strong and as lightweight for 7$.

edit- narfaniel beat me to it with these exact same ones.

u/cfc1016 · 7 pointsr/Hammocks

THIS ONE - $44

There's another unit that has the same overlap hanging system (which I VASTLY prefer to the standard "this is your one and only harness point" style) and is 10' instead of 9'. THIS is it - $60.

In researching a compact indoor unit, those were the two at the top of my list. The pole ends and adjustable harness point are really the winning feature.

Read the comments in THIS POST for all the details you could possibly want.

Snake skins are like a stuff sack for your rain fly, they really help with set up a and take down time

A nice list of hitches, animations of how to tie them, and detailed descriptions, uses, advantages, and disadvantages.

This is the best site for learning how to tie knots I've found. This coupled with my Ashley's book of knots keeps me busy.

If I need something really tight, I generally use a trucker's hitch with an alpine butterfly loop and a bowline. Goes up fast, takes down fast, and doesn't bind too much.

Ultimate Hammocks Hanging Kit Hammock Indoor Outdoor

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015NRCYL2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Working great so far. Hard part was finding studs to put them in.

u/ductape98 · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

This is a spreader bar hammock not a mayan hammock most commonly seen on this subreddit. the spreader bar negates most benefits of a hammock; it makes it weigh more (4 lbs. opposed to about 2 for a mayan hammock with bug net and tarp), it will topple easily, and probably leave you with a sore back in the morning. This hammock setup also costs $140, for this price you could buy similar mayan setup like this one or choose from many other options.

It's 9 feet but with the hooks all the way down my camping hammocks don't have any issues. They're 10.5 to 12 feet long.

I sleep in the cloth hammock it comes with. It will stretch a good amount the first few hangs.

u/Tihspeed · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

it really is that easy...

i used this
for my sons room

used a stud finder to find studs, drilled the hole, tightened the bolts and hung the hammock in twenty minutes...

happy hanging

I've been using mine in the BWCA for about 4 years now. Things I've learned:

  • We go in August and it can get chilly at night. A sleeping mat is essential if you don't want a cold backside.

  • If you don't have a hex cover for your gear or a smaller rainfly for your hammock your gear may get wet. I've been caught out in storms and the original rainfly for my Hennessy wasn't quite enough ground coverage and ended up with some damp gear. I upgraded to the hex fly and have been golden. A separate tarp for gear will also work.

  • You might have to think out of the box on some sites with smaller trees. I had to hang basically over a 5 or 6 foot drop at one site with poor tree coverage. It was either hang there or basically hang way back in the forest.

  • I use Atlas Straps, climbing rings and caribeaners for my hang. I typically have my hammock set up in about 2 minutes. The Atlas straps give me a TON of length to hang, so I can hang just about everywhere up there.

I can't really think of much else. If you don't have a bug net life is going to suck, but I think anyone using a hammock in the BWCA knows that. I'll never go back to a tent in the BWCA. Using a hammock up there is amazing.
u/paradox4286 · 1 pointr/Hammocks

I have this one from Amazon. Under $18 and has held up well for me. I really like mine, and for that price, I figured it was worth a gamble. I've spent $18 on far worse things.

I have been using this one for the last 2 years. It is a little on the short side but it works fine with the hammock I sleep in every night.

u/carefact0rzero · 2 pointsr/Hammocks

I ditched the stock rope on my Eno and customized it a bit. I got some Amsteel blue and made a continuous loop that passes through the channel and a rap ring. Finished product looks like this. You will never have to worry about a knot coming loose again with this setup, and it makes hanging the hammock a breeze, just clip a carabiner to the rap rings and you're done.

u/MortalWombat42 · 1 pointr/Hammocks

I've got the one by "Best Choice" that is a few bucks cheaper but looks to be identical (they even offer the same hammock I got with mine), aside from not having square feet on the bottom of the legs.

I've only used it outdoors a couple of times, but I sleep in it indoors most nights for almost 2 years now and it's never let me down. For outdoors though, I think /u/RecreationalAsshole is on the money with the turtledog stand.

u/whitefang573431 · 6 pointsr/Hammocks

The plans were from a website that sells pvc pipe >.< I just feel cheated at this point.

Defeated, I caved and bought the $44 stand recommended to me earlier by u/cfc1016.
