Supposedly "over 1000 photographs on over 1000 pages". If it's their printing, it's gonna be a great presentation. He also corrected every detail he found that was inaccurate in the first printing.
I'd love another old 74 (even a generator Shovel would be fine) to build and go through. I'm conflicted though... I've planned on buying and building a late FXR ('89-94) into a hot rod, but after our discussions I'm wondering if I shouldn't put that money into another 74 (next year for all of this). The FXR will be more gratifying for wheelies and such and doing burnouts in front of my bitch mother in law's house, but a 74 would just be, well, a 74, with all the joy of wrenching and riding that brings with it. If you keep posting photos as you go through the program, it'll help me decide on the 74.
By the way, it is my opinion that Gasgacinch (gorilla snot) is the best stuff going for case halves. It also works wonderfully as a rubberizing coat for paper or asbestos gaskets when putting together older bikes with warped or dinged gasket surfaces. Get a can and add it to your tool box. I'm pretty sure it's liquid latex, but who knows. A thin coat on both sides of the gasket (that you let dry before assembly: 5 minutes or less) will seal any scratches or dings in old cam covers, primary covers, rocker box covers, ratchet lids, kicker covers, and so on. For case assembly, a not-so-thin film on either side of the case halves that's allowed to mostly dry before assembly will seal the cases tighter than anything else I've found. The Permatex #2 works fine but I don't like the color. I'm just partial to the gorilla snot. NEVER had a leaky case or treated gasket with it.
Since you like tips, my "essential goopy stuff" box has these things in it... always-
Copy and paste and print it out and go shopping. :)
This is the second Pikes Peak trip I've seen posted here recently, I really want to make that trip. I guess it'll have to wait until next year though.
For lighting, I recently replaced my crappy halogen bulb with this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010QBCZ1O/
I have a 4.5 inch bucket on my bike, so the usual LED inserts are not an option unless I put a big ugly bucket on. This is a super cost effective option at $56 and it produces about 300% more light for me, I dig it so far. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, so I can't comment on durability yet but for that price I'll be happy if it lasts a year. This isn't a comprise for me, I ride a lot at night and I want to be able to see clearly. This thing is great and I am perfectly happy with it - visibility is fantastic.
It’s just a Chinese knockoff I got off Amazon for $40
There’s a bunch of them up there but here’s the link to the one I bought.
Super bright and super easy to install.
If I had to do it again I would. It is heavy AF, and awkward to get home. (As far as I know they will only help you get it into a pickup truck. Heavy end forward of course, but that makes it really hard to unload by yourself) As others have mentioned, the front chock should probably be replaced with something beefier, (I used this) and it doesn't spin worth a shit. The ramp does come off easily but it obviously does take up a motorcycle's worth of space in the garage.
But other than that, its fluffy white clouds. If you couple it with one of these you will be ready for anything. I threw a couple extra C clamps on it for additional mobile tie downs, useful if you want to raise the front or the back wheel.

Its the Krator Tall Fairing, goes for $90 USD. I'll warn you there is some modification you'll have to do to make it work, its meant for Dynas.
Headlight relocation is necessary, I used the DK Customs kit. As far as the mounting bracket, it comes with some hardware but I dont think it works very well on the Sportster, I ended up making my own using 16 gauge sheet metal and my old harley quick release clamps.
I got the paint from ColorRite, paid an arm and a leg for a rattle can of clear coat and color matched paint. Though original black that it comes in is good enough if your bike is gloss black.
I got the day lighter "knockoff" off amazon or eBay for like $60.00 with shipping. Pretty
Easy to install looks good and doesn't cost $500.00.
Wisamic 5-3/4" 5.75" Round LED Projection Daymaker Headlight for Harley Davidson Motorcycles Black 9 pcs Bulb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DZU30S0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_MBg9GsV58RfaJ
Comes in black or chrome.
Edit my bike is a
2013 forty eight
First, check to make sure the battery connection is tight; second, check to make sure battery has a charge; lastly, do you have fuel? When the bike is parked, keep it on a trickle charger. Attach a pigtail to your battery so you hook it up easily when you get home every night. If you're getting a click-click-click when trying to turn it over, it's probably the battery. I bought this trickle charger a while back and haven't been sorry at all. It also comes with a pigtail. Good luck.
I’m in the same boat as you. I’m looking for more of an ok rider/winter project though. Pick up Donnys unauthorized tech guide. https://www.amazon.com/Donnys-Unauthorized-Technical-Harley-Davidson-Present/dp/1475942826/ref=nodl_
I bought it and have been reading through it and it’s a gold mine. Hope someone can offer more good luck.
I can’t speak for clutch but for headlights and turn signals all I can say is Amazon. I got this LED Headlight:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018LXCV4U?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
And these front signals:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07F1G3P1G?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
I have no complaints and they saved me probably $400 if I bought them from the dealership.
Read the reviews for reassurance if you’d like but they are a must have!
Hope this helps.
I ride my 883N sportster all year round in Norfolk, VA and that includes some 30 degree days. I got a set of these and installed them and they work great. They block the wind off my hands very well.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079L27P4T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For gloves I use either a set of Alpinestar Drystar link below or a pair of heated gloves with my Heated jacket. Most of the time I am to lazy to deal with the heated gear and use the alpinestars though and they work great and are really warm.
https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-corozal-drystar-gloves

As for speed i can tell you that on my 883N I ride everywhere at 80+ mph and the worse my gas mileage is down to is 39MPG. On longer rides i get in the 50s. I did however put in a stage 1 setup with new Vance and Hines short shots (they are loud), the Screaming eagle air filter and a Vance and Hines FP3 which lets me adjust the ECM. I have gone on a 380 mile trip with this bike at around 80 the entire way in 40 degree weather with no issues.

As for the headlight i use a $50 variant of the daymaker from Amazon and have had it 3 years so far with no issues. I also installed a 6" lightbar on the front below the headlight in case i need extra light and to help me be seen during the day.
For the seat i have a 2up sundowner seat that is a little wider and i love it. I actually replaced that seat like 2nd day i had the bike so my wife and daughter could ride. Been on it 3 years now.

Below is a youtube video i did for the viking bags i have on my bike that will show you most of my mods just missing my hand guards.

Wisamic 5.75"
https://smile.amazon.com/Wisamic-5-3-5-75-LED-Headlight/dp/B01DZU30S0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537471564&sr=8-1&keywords=wisamic+5-3%2F4%22+5.75%22+round+led+projection+daymaker+headlight
Works great in my 2002, should fit the same in the '94 headlight bucket. It's a tight squeeze but it works. The light is awesome, especially compared to the OEM shitbox.
Do you know what particular model it is? I recently got an iron 883 and purchased this LED headlamp off Amazon and it is awesome!!! Super easy install and makes a hell of a difference at night!
LED Headlamp
K) I also need a phone mount and how the F do you get a charger or "cigarette lighter" to keep the phone charged for the Waze.
Battery Tender 12 Volt Junior Automatic Battery Charger https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CITK8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aJygDb3YPNVR9
Battery Tender 081-0158 Quick Disconnect Plug with USB Charger https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJ5KEF4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PHygDbY6Z9FSG
That gives you a charger and a battery tender.
I have this mounted to the dash extender on my Dyna:
SCOSCHE MAGDMB MagicMount https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I608BJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lKygDb5V5QAWE
It's been rock solid for years (the tank is higher than the phone so wind doesn't catch it) and it's not mounted to the handlebars where it can distract me or vibrate loose. My post history has pictures but I've never seen a Sportster with a tank mounted dash so you'd have to stick it on the paint.
And this in the windshield of my truck too:
SCOSCHE MAGHDGPS MagicMount https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q69U8YM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aLygDb46TW35Y
For etiquette, I keep just about everything to a quick wave or beep-beep at most. If I happen to see some others, I usually just fall in line with them as far as our paths are the same. I ride in the back of the group and keep about the same amount of space the rest of the group has. If they ride side to side, I get as close as I feel comfortable (and that isn't side by side lol). If they're staggered, I stay staggered too. Stop lights are different. Pull right up next to them and give them a quick head nod or maybe a compliment lol
Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but this is the one I have:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DZU30S0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_exGSJbUqNpNv9
It's $50.99 and looks just like the Daymaker. Ive had it for about a month now and it's been great. Easy to install, no extras needed, and no issues with it so far.
Congrats on joining the Broken Bone club.
Also, cool pic. Ride Safe!

I’ve used that with great success
I packed a sleeping bag and tent, but didn't ever use them. I stayed with friends and family and hotels.
I'll try to remember exactly all I packed.
4 shirts
6 pairs of underwear
4 pairs of socks
a set a thermal pants and shirt
shoe covers
rain gear
basic tools in my swingarm bag
That's basically it

EDIT:
I used these backing cubes as well
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014VBGMX2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got a Daymaker style LED off of Amazon for less than $50 and it's amazing. Even during the day I can see it's reflection off of road signs. I highly recommend it.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DZU30S0/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1505147395&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=daymaker+led+headlight+for+harley+5.75&dpPl=1&dpID=416A6FSR7fL&ref=plSrch
If your heart isn't set on the 2 gallon tank, try a 3 gallon. It would look good and fill in that gap between the seat and tank. I do 120+ miles on my 48 weekly.
Since everyone is mentioning phones, I use one of these when my phone dies. It will let you charge your phone off of the battery tender connector.
> The lights that blockhead used i cant even find on revilla or j&p cycle.
He used an Amazon Chinese special. They're actually reasonably reliable, and there are plenty out there for Fat Bob as well. If it's Amazon, the returns policies are pretty good if it's a dud.
Ram X mount. This is the handlebar clamp option but you can also get a mount for your brake reservoir or handlebar clamp bolt mount. This is the best mounting system I've ever owned.

I got the one made by Sunpie on Amazon. Love it. 5-3/4 5.75 Daymaker LED Headlight for Harley Davidson Motorcycle Headlamp Projector Driving Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018LXCV4U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Uq75yb2FQGAQV
This is the one I bought 2 years ago. It has been running great! Plus, it shouldn't have any issues with any sporty, I put this on my 2014 iron, and then later my 04 roadster lol
Now that I look at that page again though, theres one with a halo, I might purchase it lol
I got a daymaker rippoff from Amazon and it works great. 50.00.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DZU30S0/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492538569&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=daymaker+headlight
I went with this one for $50 from Amazon. Side-by-side, the only difference I can make out with an HD Daymaker is the little bar and shield w/ a light in the bottom-center. I've been running it for a few months now and it's a great light. Also, with Prime shipping, I had it two days after placing the order.
This is the one I bought and it's been great for the few days I've had it on: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074PQ7DTK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Point you in the direction...
Honestly, just start watching as many youtube videos and reading as much as you can. I guess I would start with these two books:
The Original Wild Ones
[Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga](http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0760335370?pc_redir=1412297263&robot_redir=1]
You can also start reading up on motorcycle club history in general.
Or, you know, find an established club and go hang around with them. Books and the internet will teach you a lot, but going out and living it is eve better.
You're good on the kickstand, just roll the bike forward a few inches every few weeks so the tires are not always resting on the same spot all winter. Also, you can pick [this Black and Decker] (https://www.amazon.com/Decker-BM3B-Battery-Charger-Maintainer/dp/B0051D3MP6) tickle charger up for $20. If you don't have the $23 to spend to get a trickle charger, well you mentioned Christmas gifts. Ask for one and wait another 25 days.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018LXCV4U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0VyJDbS9S9NHS
This headlight plugged right into my 03 Night Train without any modifications or extra parts being needed. Turn signals, on the other hand, require a load equalizer if you’re replacing all four with LEDs. I use two LEDs up front and everything works fine. Replacing all four with LED without adding an equalizer will make the bike act as if a bulb is burnt out (rapid flashing).
Get yourself a trickle charger. like this one. If the battery isn't too far gone, the trickle charger should revive the battery and let you start the bike.
Welcome to the Broken Bone Club. Heal up, the road awaits you...
if you look on amazon you can get a battery tender for fairly cheap. With my bike I plug it in when I put it in storage and unplug it when I'm ready to ride. I don't do anything else to the bike to winterize except change the oil in the spring.
Edit: Here's the tender I bought, it's 25 bucks...(https://smile.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-021-0123-Junior-Charger/dp/B000CITK8S/ref=lp_15707061_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1480528572&sr=1-2)
This stuff works really good too.
Do you have quality lighting? If not I upgraded my halogen bulb to an LED headlight I found on amazon and it made a huge difference.
Amazon link here.
I do - since it's the only mod I've installed myself (so far:)

This is the link to the product in Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F1G3P1G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

It was a breeze to install, it looks *awesome* both day and night, and it functions flawlessly (when turn signal is on, white LEDs are completely off, and vice versa).
Thanks man!
The headlight is one of the cheap amazon ones. So far no issues.
Wisamic 5-3/4" 5.75" LED Projection Daymaker Headlight for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles 9 pcs Bulb-Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DZU30S0?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Appears to be a good design. The only spot I could see water being a problem would be the the 2-pole connection, but you do not have to use that or could hide the connection in the battery compartment. But for $40 I would attempt to make this myself. Just make sure you have an inline fuse. Or look at this and it even has USB. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FR2JF0W/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_x5XEub01RE0HP. If you are looking for just USB there is this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJ5KEF4/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_A8XEub0EXCW4G

Skip the cigarette adapter. THIS is all you need to connect to the tender wire you have.

i find it hard to believe a $400 headlight is necessary...
No doubt. When you decide to, this light upgrade is a must. The stock headlight could probably be outperformed by my iPhone’s flashlight lol.
Which light??? Sorry I was on business. If you're talking about the headlight I got it as a steal from amazon. Wisamic 5-3/4" 5.75" Round LED Projection Daymaker Headlight for Harley Davidson Motorcycles Black 9 pcs Bulb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DZU30S0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7dOqzbHE35FWS
