I like your magnetic palette. Which size is it?

If you're trying to reduce, here are some ideas. :)

Do you need all those brushes? I'm currently using these Sephora larger set and eye set. I only carry the larger handle since the eye set works with the small end of it. Totals about 60g for 11 brushes. I'm currently carrying the eye brush heads in a small pillbox, but I'm thinking of just putting them in a mini ziplock instead. The big brush heads and handle I just dump them into my makeup bag.

Do you need a full size eyelash curler? I like this one.

Do you need the spare mirror? Your compact seems to already have one.

Do you need a dual sharpener? It makes sense if you carry different size pencils and it can do both. If you only need one size, there are smaller options.

How long are you traveling for? Will you realistically use all the q-tips? I budget about 1.5 - 2 per day.

I find store bought travel size liquids are often still too much product for the duration of the trip. Consider decanting liquids into mini bento sauce bottles 12 ml and 5 ml. You can probably decant your facial spray into a spray bottle like the mini green one you have. I found similar spray bottles at Walgreens and the Container Store.

How many razors do you need? I see a full size disposable and the mini Venus. I carry the mini Venus, but I tossed out the case and keep the blade in the little container refill comes in; I keep it closed with a mini rubber hair band.

Do you need all four alligator clips? Is there a smaller clip you can substitute? Do you need to use a curling iron or hot roller set while traveling? It might make sense for your lifestyle and hair type, but have you considered sleeping in braids to get a similar texture?

Your makeup bag looks bulky to begin with. How heavy is it? I'm currently using an Eagle Creek Specter Toiletry bag. I also like using mini black rubber bands to keep similar items together.

Instead of carrying a full bottle of Neosporin, what about a packet from a first aid kit? I actually put together a really compact first aid kit using little packets of medicine like these.

I don't advocate giving up beauty luxuries while traveling, but there's always a way to optimize your load. :)

I love my Prana Shandyn dress. It's thin, light, stretchy, has pockets, is very flattering, and dries fast! It can be dressed up or down and takes up very little space. I have it in grey and cargo green, but would love some brighter colors or interesting patterns. I don't necessarily want something super bold, just something summery.

Ha! I just went through the same dilemma. I have a typical striped Cacala peshtemal Turkish towel that I travel with, but I agree that it looks a little towel-y as a scarf (but not so much on you!), so I don't wear it as such, which means it ends up taking space in bag. I recently got this one (https://www.amazon.com/Bersuse-100-Cotton-Peshtemal-Stonewash/dp/B01LT57GOC) as it is more subdued in pattern, but it's a bit thicker and rougher in texture and I still think it kind of looks towel-y, but not as bad. Just came across this company (https://rivieratowel.com/products/careyes-towel) with some decent options, and they donate proceeds to The Sea Turtle Conservancy).

@ArtofRebellion, which size Outlier did you get, and does it work ok as a scarf?

I like the idea of making my own towel. Scarves are narrower than towels, which makes wearing a towel as a scarf a bit bulky. If there was a good way to join 2 pieces, then maybe splitting it in half horizontally would solve my dilemma of wanting to save space in bag and being able to have decent looking scarf. In other words, when in transit, wear 1 half as scarf, pack other half, then when you need a towel, join the 2 halves together. Hmm, new product in the making?

I love packing cubes and absolutely swear by them for organization and some compression. On the trip I just got back from, I used compression packing cubes and feel like I found the holy grail of packing. I bought the more expensive Eagle Creek ones and these packing cubes . I saw no difference in quality between the less expensive option and the Eagle Creek bags. I love them and the small ones work the best for me. I put them vertically into the valleys created by the handle in my rolling bag.

I also love the fact that I can slide them into drawers or onto shelves in a hotel room and it’s more sanitary.

Repacking is a breeze.

Love them !

I have this Sephora brush and it is very nice! Nice and gentle on my hair.
For something a bit cheaper I like this one as well! Also super gentle on my fine hair.

A little late to the game but my favorite bag (for travel and everyday) is the Ogio Brooklyn bag.

https://www.amazon.com/OGIO-114007-Womens-Brooklyn-Tablet/dp/B0076D0MYI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542584798&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=ogio+brooklyn&dpPl=1&dpID=517v56HThVL&ref=plSrch

I’ve had this bag (in black) for over three years and have taken it on multiple international trips (India, Europe, New Zealand) and use it at home and it’s still in great shape. I usually carry it as my personal item (in addition to my one bag) but it packs down easily into a onebag if you wanted to.

I call this bag my “Magic bag”because it seems to hold just about anything I want it to and not look overfilled. All at one time i have carried a water bottle, iPad (or a small laptop), Nintendo switch in its case, iPhone, charging cables, pen, wallet, snack, and possibly a light sweater or umbrella depending on their size.

I also like that it is fashionably versatile -can easily be taken on a hike or to a restaurant as is.

Hi! Okay, so this is really delayed, but I wanted to give you another perspective on packing light on international carry-ons. I have two different bags I use, depending on the kind of travel I'm doing: the Ciao convertible underseater spinner and the REI Trail 40. The top compartment of the Ciao zips up to form another pouch if you need. I bring the Ciao if I know I'll be buying a lot of souvenirs and expect to check the bag, and I always bring a packable duffel tote in that case. I'll bring it in the Trail 40 next trip. Also, don't buy the Ciao spinner on Amazon - it's $29.99 at Costco, which is where I got it! The REI Trail 40 beat out the Porter 30, Fairpoint 40, and Kelty 36/44 bags, among others, for me. (I might try out the Fairview now that it exists, but I'm pretty happy with the Trail.)

Both of these bags qualify as international carry-ons. Here is what I fit inside the Trail 40 on my last trip:

  • Packing cube: 5 shirts and 3 scarves

  • Packing cube: 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of joggers, 1 pair of hiking pants, 1 dress, leggings, pajama shorts, 1 sports bra

  • Half Cube: Underwear and two swimsuits

  • Bullet Journal and pen case

  • Book

  • Macbook Air 13 and cord

  • Toiletries (Liquid in quart-size bag)

  • Toiletries (Solid cosmetics, medicines, deodorant, hairbrush, hair ties)

  • Ballet Flats

  • Sandals

  • Umbrella

  • Water bottle

  • Snacks

(edited to add things I forgot about)

I wore a sweatshirt and sneakers on the plane. I didn't even end up wearing everything on my last trip, so I'll probably downsize a little bit next. I fit the same amount of stuff in the Ciao underseater as a carry-on and brought a commuter backpack for use on the plane.

Shoes: Cole Haan Zerogrand oxfords. Solid sole to walk in rain; comfortable enough to walk all day and even do a teeny bit of hiking; fancy enough that I can wear them with a dress or slacks to a dressy bistro.

Handbag: Rough & Tumble hobo pack. I personally like the lambskin leather because it looks nicer, but I'm hoping they bring back the beeswax linen for weight reasons. Tons of pockets; secure ziptop; can be worn over the shoulder, cross body, or as a backpack; lambskin version looks nice enough that I don't mind bringing it to fancy restaurants.

Clothes: not multifunctional, but I really really like my North Face Apex Bionic jacket in ikat print. Fashionable pattern makes it less technical looking; windproof which makes it very warm given its weight; waterproof; zip pockets.

I'm going to Laos for a month in Nov, and can tell you what I plan to take.

  1. I'm bringing a long-sleeved light jacket made of sports wicking fabric for hiking. All my other tops are tees or tanks. Consider that if you bring a pashmina or large scarf, you could wear it shawl-style for warmth if necessary.
  2. I'm bringing leggings because I live in leggings (even in 100F weather in the USA south), and technical pants because I hike. If you're a skirt/dress person, bring those instead.
  3. I would say sandals OR flip-flops, not both.
  4. I'm bringing a cheap crossbody (look on eBay and poshmark, I found a cute bag for $15) to carry my umbrella, book, camera, etc for day-to-day. I'm also bringing a packable duffle, carried in my Fairview, because I'll be buying my family's Christmas presents while I'm there, and I know I'll probably get larger textiles for my mom, aunt, etc and will want to check them on the plane back. Are you hiking? If so, consider whether you can go without a small backpack by using the pockets in your hiking pants for essentials, or whether you'll want the small packable backpack (in which case, I'd use that instead of the crossbody).
  5. Idk, how absolutely important is this to you? Personally I'd bring the Turkish towel and wouldn't bother with a sleeping bag.
  6. See above.
  7. Batteries get heavy. How sure are you that you'll need one? Would it be easier to just get a new battery in your phone before you go so it'll hold charge, then just charge things as necessary?
  8. Stuff like paracetamol (or aspirin, or ibuprofen, etc), bandaids, and condoms can be bought anywhere. If you have bandaids, will you really need the gauze and tape? Instead of alcohol/iodine, could you just bring a small bottle of hand-sanitizer (you're likely to want one anyway) and use that? I'd leave the thermometer at home.
u/ellaasbury107 · 3 pointsr/HerOneBag

The towel is a turkish towel like this one. wearing it as a scarf/blanket on the plane! I definitely won't need a towel for showers, but I'm doing a few water activities that said BYO towel. I have a decent amount of skincare but I'm really only bringing cleanser and moisturizer. Toners/treatments/oils staying at home! I decided to just bring the 1 cardigan and leave the other sweater.

That is what I was attempting to do with the shoes, maybe I'm just not succeeding! The 25 degree temperature swing is throwing me off.

Serious question, do you often find public toilets with bidets?? I don't think I've seen that.

Jewelry for feeling dressier is a great idea. That is probably something I would look to buy there, simple to carry home. Personally I actually like that idea better than buy clothes there, because while I'm fighting all my desires to take a lot of clothes, I try not to buy a lot of clothes.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Have you found something? WireCutter recommends this travel wrap as part of their gift guide for frequent travellers

I have a special trip coming up, so I did invest in a cashmere wrap from The TravelWrap Company with an eye to cost per use. The product is gorgeous, the company is reputable and they were great to deal with.

I have a couple colors of these Skechers flats and they are cute and super comfortable! I wear them every day when it's warmer, and plan to take them to Europe with me later this year. They're sort of a knit fabric, so if they're a bit snug at first, they will stretch out and form to your foot! I've also washed mine and they came out like new.

u/Lotelia · 1 pointr/HerOneBag

I am ~ 5'2" and traveled to Europe for 2 weeks with the last generation of this guy:
https://topodesigns.com/collections/bags/products/y-pack?variant=50642813831
I paired it with these guys:
https://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Pack-Specter-Compression/dp/B00F9T852C

The size of the Y-pack was perfect for my torso. It doesn't have padded straps or a hip belt or a chest strap, but I am busty and the straps sat a just the right angle to avoid my chest and somehow rest on my hips. It was on clearance and has black magic in it somehow. It looks like this generation added more padding to the straps (mine are literally straight up seat belt material) and side pockets (which would have been nice).

Mine is seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rubZCZprTHM&vl=en
As you can see the interior is very basic, which I liked. The laptop compartment fits my 15" nicely

u/buythepotion · 2 pointsr/HerOneBag

I have this soft sided case - this is a similar one.

I really love mine, it’s soft so it squishes down pretty nicely. I keep smaller or more delicate items in the little *velcro pockets and larger/sturdier items in the main compartment. I’ve had mine over 5 years and it holds up really well.

Edit: a word

u/MeiGuoTheBootyfull · 15 pointsr/HerOneBag

I wonder if you'd also have luck asking in r/femalefashionadvice - you could crosspost! I find that there are some nice albums people make of ways to accessorize or use the same clothes or wear them in different ways, and they'd maybe have brand or style recs for you.

I'm also a big chested lady. I like to have my sleeveless dresses and put a light cardigan over as a layer, and then i can use the same cardigan with my leggings and shirt outfits. The cardigan helps me hide any tummy self-consciousness. The sleeveless option underneath lets me sweat in peace.

Congratulations!
I like the Osprey Ozone 18". It is featherlight; I've never had a suitcase so easy to maneuver. It has compression straps to keep it as thin as possible, and it always seems to fit well in overheads. The only thing I don't like is the single handle and the weird curved shape of the back. However, I'm always happy when I'm rolling it. The wheels seem very durable.

Darn tough makes wool blend no-show socks..

As far as shoes go, Chacos are great for keeping your feet cool while you walk around. I could walk for ages in mine before my feet start to hurt. As far as shoes go, I had a pair of Nike trail runners that looked plain and they were comfortable, light, breathable, and provided great support.

u/JabbaTheHedgeHog · 2 pointsr/HerOneBag

I am currently loving these Nike’s: Nike Women's Air Max Zoom Wildhorse 4 Trail Running Shoe (9.5 M US, Black/Anthracite/Anthracite) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZYTSTF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_KFB4CbKDQ8ZJ1

They are super ventilated, the color is subdued and they are very comfortable for walks and hikes.
