Hi. *big, tight virtual hug* . I'm bi. This was an important point for me too, it is totally very hard to go into something that requires you to give you such a powerful part of yourself. I imagine it is harder for you because you're gay so you don't really have another option. All I can do at this point is tell you my story as it relates to homosexuality and how I came into the Church despite being attracted to girls. I wish I could focus the spotlight more on you, but only you can do that since a back-and-forth convo is hard and time consuming on Reddit.

When I converted the only time I had been in love was with a girl. And I kind of wanted that again. Even writing about this makes me feel strange. I yelled at God (literally) for some hours about it, then I wrote what I was thinking down. It was more than the homosexuality but that was a part of it. At the end of it, somehow, I don't know how, I can't tell you how, I just accepted that if I'll do 'this' I'll have to give up things, many things. I don't know how I came to terms with it, how I found peace in that. I'm not saying the same thing will/should happen to you. I can tell you it defo happens. It may sound a bit authoritarian but it was like 'Either I'm gonna accept the claims of Jesus and the authority of His Church or not. I'm either in this 100% or I'm in this 0%.' and somehow '100%' seemed like the better option.

One thing that helped was that I did not feel condemned. This is an Eastern European country I'm talking about. People outside of church that I know often say things like 'Yeah I'm ok with gay people. I don't like the hate they get from the Church (they mean Orthodox in this case but you get the idea)' but from experience, when you come out to them, they treat you different and they do treat you worse. I believe they are well intentioned but to them it's a bit like being vegan, they're fine as long as you don't rub it in their face, and rubbing it in their face includes telling them about it. When I tell people I know from church it's a bit like 'Meh, so what? It's like you told me you are attracted to another man that isn't your husband. No biggie.'

Then I saw a person who was.... well... amazing. And she was gay. And she was... she was something by any standard. Believer or not. I mean I obvs knew other people who are gay and good people but she was something that is rare, in the general population, not just in those who are gay or straight or whatever. A saint you might say. That's how she seemed at least. To be honest I don't know much about her, maybe it was my attraction to her, I'm not trying to idealise this girl to create a story. The point is that she got me thinking about how different she is to how I was back when I was a 'practising' bisexual so to say.

And I felt like crying. What could I possibly tell this girl? How could I possibly help her? I firmly and vehemently know what sort of joy Jesus brings and how He guides people. This girl, if she were Catholic, would get canonised, it seemed to me at least. I believe that hierarchy in Heaven goes like this.

  1. God
  2. Mary
  3. (insert person I know)
  4. (insert begger I saw on the street in Rome)
  5. (insert a bunch of people, maybe 9)
  6. Insert this lesbian girl (weird considering I don't know much about her, which is why if I told this to people who knew me they wouldn't believe me)

So I randomly wrote stuff down, something I do when I have intense emotions, and then I translated it. It isn't art, but it is how I respond to 'that sentiment' as you put it:

i had to translate this because i knew

That someday it might come in useful.

This is not poetry, just some poor musings

On a page. i have been, i am You, i hope

You understand what i’m implying. i know

What i’m asking is hard because on some level

i have felt what You are feeling. Sometimes

    i still do. But there’s a difference, i assumed

You were the same, trapped in the same

Dark prison but clearly Your heart is not

Black like mine. Such is my nature, i have

Been born this way, such that tears run

Through my veins, my ventricles are made

Out of arrogance, selfishness, anger and hate

My lungs breathe lies. But You, You are not

The same. Though You don’t know it

Or might not admit it You have acceptedThe gifts of the Good Spirit much more

Than i. Oh jewel of creation, i honestly

See the beauty shine. Beautiful big heart

Please, grant my request, love Your

Strange pairing more. Love more! Yes

More! Because man has been made to love

Like you love and more! Yet know that

In loving more you will love differently.

You won’t get or see this yet

But bear a minute. Can’t You hear

A melody in the background? Is it

    Not the most glorious symphony?

It is the song of Your soul. It was written

On You, not on society’s tablets.

    And tell me sometimes though

    When you listen can’t You

    Hear the silence?

The song of Your conscience says

‘This is not love, it’s a parody of it.’

i have been You. i have heard it

At that spot too. i am sure it is harder

For You than it was for i. Yet, this music

Is Yours and You deserve to go

To the Wedding so much more than i.

Why did You rip the invitation in half?

Please ask the Groom for another one.

My Darling, my Love, i wish i knew You

So that i could give You whatever You

Would need, the comaradery , the joy

The consolation, the help, the dear

    Friendship.

My Beloved, tell me, how can i talk

With this Person when i don’t know

A thing? i know nothing, sometimes it

Scares me. Oh the pain each one

Is feeling! i don’t know, i am clueless

What i know is dust and nought at all

But wait, i do know something

    Oh veritas gaudium!

    Oh lumen fidei!

Lala, overly idealistic and chessy but the idea is that yeah... it is freakin hard! I still don't know what to say**. 'I'm sorry. It sounds like having a family is deeply important to you, which is understandable. This is not an easy thing and you are admirable for contemplating doing it.'** It is the truth, I mean it, but what does it do? :(

Regardless of what you do or choose, lots of honest love from me and, as cliche as it may sound, from Jesus and His Bride (to death, and beyond, quite literally)

Sure -- the best way to learn is to join a group where other people are meditating -- they can give you support and encouragement when you need it.

I have had great results with a system developed by Paramahansa Yogananda, a yogi from India -- he developed a system of meditation exercises that's designed to basically give you spiritual experiences on command. I personally have had wonderful experiences (peace/bliss/love etc) with it, and so have a number of other people I know who use it. You can also read his autobiography (written in 1945 but it has been a bestseller ever since) which you can find in pretty much any bookstore.

I would also recommend the Buddhists, they have a lot of experience with meditation and I have heard of people having really great results, especially at their 10-day meditation retreats.

You can also get a book and practice by yourself, but you lose the benefit and support and encouragement of a group -- also, meditating in a group is very helpful, because there is a "group dynamic" that is created the helps and reinforces your own meditation.

However I would just say whatever you pick, just stick with it because it can really develop into something very beautiful. Just start with a few minutes morning and night -- even as little as 5 minutes is very helpful.

Ironically, when you first start meditating, you notice just how much your mind jumps around -- just stick with it, and great changes will happen -- basically like when you first start working out with weights. At first you may feel out of shape, but later on you notice lots of changes.

Funny story: I've only been around since Mag5, and Nick started at Mag4.

Magfest #1 was started by a guy named Joe Yamine. It was SUPPOSED to be an anime con named (definitely butchering the spelling) OMAKEACON, but they happenned to book the Minibosses, and the rest is history.

After Mag1, Joe (smartly) had enough and was prepared to call it done. Brendan Becker, who was an attendee, grabbed a chunk of money and Eli Courtwright, and would not let it die. Magfest 2 through approximately 9 were run by Brendan, Eli is still with us to this day.

I attended Magfest 5 after (bizzarely) submitting a patch to the linux kernel (in xpad.c) that fixed Dance Dance REvolution controllers, and telling authors of DDR clones that it was fixed. One of these people was Brendan and that's how I found out about Magfest.

At Mag5 I put out my keyboard in the hallway and left it there, finding people jamming out on it in my absence. At Mag6, Paul Good, who was also running stuff, threw a room at me which we called Jamspace. At Mag7 I was thrown headfirst into music, by Mag9 I had taken on other duties, and at Mag10 when Brendan had to step back, I ended up being the current Sucker In Charge Of Things, which I still do to this day.

----------

My best advice for starting up new organizations is, PRACTICE. Use anything as an excuse to practice, build your crew. There are forgiving venues like colleges/etc that will give you money to run cool stuff for their students, or bars that would be willing to let you rent the place on an otherwise dead night.

Start small and do it really well. Don't run any bad events, make sure all your attendees and staff walk away thinking it was the best thing ever. Learn lessons incrementally, and then when you have a good grip on the flow and basics, move onto getting crazier. If you ever want to do something in a venue, always start with a hotel (which you can negotiate with, trading hotel room sales for meeting space), and NEVER START IN A CONVENTION CENTER (they are so expensive and out to screw you, especially if you're small).

Starting a non-profit is pretty involved (our process took nearly 2 years, though we're more complicated than most), if you can, maybe try and get involved with an existing one, or look into something called fiscal sponsorship. My advice for starters is to ignore that stuff for now, and just focus on doing some good events. The first few will probably only barely break even, so you don't need to worry about being exempt from taxes or whatever. Just make sure money in > money out, if only by $1.

Find allies. Let them do cool stuff with you and get out of their way.

I like this book here, been re-reading it lately, it maps pretty well to the Magfest organization: http://www.amazon.com/Tribal-Leadership-Leveraging-Thriving-Organization/dp/0061251321 might help you in your travels.

Good luck! The most important thing is persistence, just keep doing it and building that momentum, there's no shortcut.

Hey. This sounds so great. The best perk at my job is getting to take the oculus home at night. I mainly just play beat saber, but a traditional game would be amazing.

Let me geek out here and ask, I'd love for the more powerful spell to require big arm swings. Just really let me get lost in the moment. Mild vibrations increasing as the spell gains power. Is that something you guys might consider?

Also, I read RPO and Nueromancer and Otherworld. Great VR novels (really just RPO was super VRish). Do any of the devs draw inspiration from movies and books, or just other games?

If books add to your creative juices, I would suggest Virtual Heaven, redux. It's on Amazon. Super fun and well-thought out VR plot lines. Here's link if you want to add more VR to your life.

>What's the best submarine movie of all time and why is it Down Periscope?
>
>When it comes to the best submarine movie, you've got a lot to pick from there are a lot of really great movies and a variety of genres. Honestly the two that surprised me the most were Run Silent Run Deep and Destination Tokyo due to their age. I wasn't sure that something from that time period could be that captivating and compelling. They're really great and have a lot of what we're all looking for in sub movies, fish in the water, crazy amounts of tension, depth charging, and great acting! Honestly it's impossible for me to pick just one.

Awesome!!! I'd love to meet Tony personally one day too. He's a big deal and really humble for what I've seen/read. Congratulations again for being part of such a great company! Thank you very much for taking the time to read and reply my questions!

About question 2, I was referring to this book. It's in Zappos' library, so you can borrow it anytime. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Basically, someone in Stage 3 thinks "I'm great, you suck", and someone in Stage 4 thinks "We're great, they (the competitors) suck". Someone in stage 3 is cocky, smart-ass and treats everyone else as if they were inferior to him. They also don't see the importance in Core Value #10 :). Is there anyone in Zappos you've seen behaving this way?

Have a great life! :D

u/WaterSinks · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Well that is super nice. Thank you. I don't have a PayPal account.

But, if you would like to... donate the money to the National Child Defense Fund. That would be really cool.

And, if you would like a good read, I have an Kindle ebook out. Though I looked forward to the royalties the other day, Amazon is giving me some trouble on paying on time.

http://amzn.com/B005FBA900

Or...if you see me walking along the road; I'm the one with the small dog, I would enjoy a ride.

That all aside, thank you. That really means alot! You made my day! :-)

u/HypnoErato · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Why thank you!

The issue is there are loads of super in depth clinical books (which deal with stuff you will never need to know in this line of work) or the utter rubbish stuff that says it can make your boobs turn into alpacas or whatever. However, once you filter that there are lots of good books out there. Here are a few I suggest:

u/DouglasKenrick · 2 pointsr/IAmA

I hadn't heard about it, but before looking, I would guess that a way to test this would be to determine if the practice is more common when a man has reason to believe his partner has been unfaithful, and is less likely to do so when she has been around him, and not around other men recently. In a quick look at their abstract, they say they tested the idea with 231 men, and found that men at greater risk of sperm competition expressed greater interest in, and spent more time performing, oral sex on their partner. They say this relationship existed even after controlling for relationship length, relationship satisfaction, and sexual intercourse duration. That still leaves room for other possible confounds, but at least they subjected the idea to empirical test. Shackelford has done other research on "sperm competition" which although hardly a g-rated topic, is a fascinating, and surprising, phenomenon. I am afraid I encourage my students to try to study topics unrelated to explicit sex, such as economic decisions and conformity! An evolutionary perspective can inform us about everyday concerns far removed from sex and aggression (even though differential reproduction is always ultimately involved in any animal's behavior, including Homo sapiens). See for example our recent book on economic decision-making: "The Rational Animal: How evolution made us smarter than we think"

http://www.amazon.com/The-Rational-Animal-Evolution-Smarter/dp/0465032427/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1378252583&sr=1-1

u/DaveGoldberg · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Do I ever!

http://www.amazon.com/The-Universe-Rearview-Mirror-Symmetries/dp/0525953663/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0

As for your more substantive question, part of the solution is to address some of these issues in school both by addressing more interesting topics (there is simply no reason why physics needs to be presented in the order in which it was discovered, or to teach high school physics as though everyone taking it is going to be an engineer).

But even so, the fact remains that we have a large number of people (and especially political leaders) who are not only scientifically illiterate, but are proudly so. A small role can be played by popularizers, but to be effective, they need to not only be clear, but honest. I think there's far too much focus on people writing about crazy off-the-wall theories in order to get pagehits or incredulous response. What we know about the universe is plenty interesting.

Popularizers should present those.

u/ThePolymath · 20 pointsr/IAmA

I recommend reading as a good start. The two best books for beginners IMHO are: Hypnosis for Beginner's by Hewitt and The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Muprhy. The first is a great intro to all things hypnosis, the second is all about the subconscious which is what hypnosis taps into, just avoid the religious undertones if that isn't your thing.

I think I will do an edit up top and explain how hypnosis works because there are a few people that have asked already and this AMA is still young.
It works best with people who are creative and have great imaginations, the better your imagination the more likely you will be able to be hypnotized and get to deeper levels.

As far as not working well, you have to want to be hypnotized for it to be successful. There are lots of "tricks" for people who are resistant to it, but if you sit down in my chair and say, "I bet you can't hyponotize me, go ahead, try" then I will not be able to hypnotize you. It is also much harder for very analytical people and paranoid people because the ability to let go and relax is very important.

u/TheSufferingFilm · 7 pointsr/IAmA

The majority of the money came independently through individual investors. Of course, friends and family pitched in but the majority of it was plain old salesmanship. Rob and I both spent countless hours putting together professional sales packets going over the story of the film, the location, our experience, the financial possibilities, etc... A lot of salesmanship, but always being honest with potential investors.

We used Kickstarter sparingly having just hit a $5k goal recently for some extra finishing funds.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rbhamiltoniv/the-suffering-independent-horror-film-completion-f

Screenwriting wise, Rob and I both are ardent believers in reading all scripts you can get your hands on. Particularly if they are films you have seen and are familiar with. It's the best way to understand how a script translates finally onto the screen.

Of course, reading Save the Cat, and one of my favorites,

http://www.amazon.com/Save-Last-Book-Screenwriting-Youll/dp/1932907009/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396988059&sr=8-1&keywords=save+the+cat+screenwriting

"How Not to Write a Screenplay"

http://www.amazon.com/How-Not-Write-Screenplay-Screenwriters/dp/1580650155/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1396988100&sr=1-1&keywords=how+not+to+write+a+screenplay

But to be honest, it's all about the story. It's what helped us acquire our investors. Having a story that was genuinely intriguing and frightening helped us reach our goal. However, the script doesn't come easily it took well over a year to work out from inception to completion.

Are you fucking serious? YOU GOT JENNY LAWSON TO REVIEW YOUR BOOK ON AMAZON?! That is amazing! Talk about a glowing recommendation from a reputable source--her book is one of the funniest things I've ever... ever'd!

Oh. You're funny too. But I haven't read your book yet, so I can't say for sure if it'll be funny... though Lawson's recommendation might have pushed me over the edge. I love her.

Question: what was the funniest part of Lawson's book? Follow-up: why was it the part about the turkey named Jenkins?

u/Natefil · 2 pointsr/IAmA

You're going to be getting a lot of counter-Austrian perspectives in your macroeconomics classes. Basically the majority of macroeconomics is oriented towards Keynesian/Monetarist economic philosophy. Honestly just pick up a macroeconomic book and go through the history of economic though in the 20th century and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not bitter about this, it's just simply oriented towards those avenues.

If you want to watch some videos: here is the Austrian perspective in a modern sense.. I especially like this one for its informative value. And if you want something for entertainment anything by Bob Murphy is great because he's just so entertaining but his bit on the Great Depression is probably my favorite.

As for books:

Principles of Economics

How the Economy Grows and Why it Crashes

Also for foundations of liberty you can go with Mises or Rothbard.

"You can’t nudge history forward in the way a child would when wishing to make a flower grow more quickly: by tugging at it. … We must patiently plant the seeds and water the ground well, and give the plants exactly the amount of time they need to mature.
— President Václav Havel of the Czech Republic

I love this quote because we tend to have unreasonable expectations on how quickly countries will democratize. I devoted an entire chapter to this question in [my book] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/019062602X/). Havel makes it clear that the reality doesn't meet our soaring expectations and we need to give these transitioning democracies time to mature.

After looking through the Q&A on this thread, I noticed a trend in the type of questions asked. If the weird and often unspoken trivia of space travel interests you, I highly recommend reading Mary Roach's "Packing For Mars".

It is very nicely researched and you will probably find answers to many of the unanswered questions here. It is a New York Times best seller, and it is am amazing and amusing book.

Hello! It looks like this post is somewhat active so I'll ask my question here. I've been looking for a vacuum to replace our $50 Eureka and am currently eyeing a couple of different Miele vacuums on Amazon.

Miele S2121 Delphi

Miele S2121 Capri

I currently have enough credit to cover either of the vacuums, and want to make the best purchase I can. Any other specific models I should be considering? Our apartment has medium carpet, hardwood floors, and concrete, with the potential for pets in the future.

Also, is there any downside to buying a Miele on Amazon instead of with a local dealer?

EDIT: I've been combing through your comments on other questions, and have been looking more specifically at s6 and s8 models. S6 is probably more within my reach. Model recommendations?

u/theak · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Nope. Not until you find consistent work. A lot of it is paying out of your own pocket or borrowing from friends and family. But the more you do, the more experience you'll have and the better you'll be at doing it for a living. While I don't really care for him as a director, I respect him as a filmmaker, I'd recommend you read robert rodriguez's book for inspiration: http://www.amazon.com/Rebel-without-Crew-23-Year-Old-Filmmaker/dp/0452271878

u/gronke · 2 pointsr/IAmA

Well, here's the rub about film. Making movies is just like being in a band or doing art. You actually don't need to go to school to do it, especially college. In fact, the money you'd spend on college is much better spent purchasing a nice camera and some editing software and maybe flying to LA.

Robert Rodriguez has a famous book about how he managed to do just that.

The most important thing is networking, hard work, and being in the right place at the right time. You'll need to be in Hollywood, rubbing elbows with studio people and getting part-time gigs as PAs on films. Eventually you'll produce your own movie, and with any luck it can get entered into shows and people will start noticing you.

u/StealthyFelReaver · 2 pointsr/IAmA

I just wanted to thank you for your last AMA. I bought a Miele C2 cannister vac as a result (could not quite convince the spouse to spring for the C3). I have mostly laminate and linoleum, with some area rugs and carpeted bedrooms, and two large dogs. The Miele does a really good job on the rugs, and I love not using a broom on the smooth floor surfaces anymore! I never would have known about this brand if not for you!

I recently read Packing for Mars which is a great read for anyone interested in the nitty gritty parts of human space travel you normally don't hear about.

In the end she states that with ~$500B NASA could take a manned mission to Mars. I'm all for it. I feel like there's a major brain drain in this country with the sciences taking a back seat to defense.

yah, really it sounds like borderline personality disorder. It's different from bi-polar personality disorder. The sooner you understand the disease the sooner you'll be able to help yourself, children, and eventually your wife - if you wish to.

My mom has it, ruined my childhood, turned my dad into a man you don't want to become.

A great introductory guide is Stop Walking on Eggshells I really hope you'll find the time to look it up a bit.

edit: If you can get into couples therapy from an MFT, they'll recognize this condition in about 0.1 seconds. Her diagnosis with a psychological disorder will help you retain custody in a divorce,

I'd like to stay under $300. Thanks for your great AMAs!

I like this book. It's the first one that really got me thinking about the craft of scriptwriting.

Do a page search here for "best person to ask."

Might not be of any interest to you, but The Aquariums of Pyongyang is an interesting account of escape from NK written by the escapee himself.

I read a in The Aquariums of Pyongyang that often it's not just the offender, but also his/her family that are sent to labor camps.

Is that true? If so, how was your dad's family able to escape going?

Read this. I'm in the process of writing a feature-length script now, and hopefully producing it and making it with a friend of mine.

After his last AMA last year I also went out and bought a Panasonic bagged canister vacuum. I got the Panasonic MC-CG917.

EDIT: I definitely did not pay $1k for it... lol. I think it was about $250.

Book link for the lazy.

Sorry, I don't have any questions. I don't know much about you or what you do. But, hi! Thanks for doing an AMA and have a fantastic day!

Fine, that's kind of a cop out. Uhhh, what slightly greedy thing do you do most often?

I'm looking at the Miele C2 Complete. I have a mixture of tile, laminate, and carpet in a 1050 sq ft condo. (Carpet in living room and both bedrooms, laminate in kitchen, tile in the entry way and bathrooms.

Is this something you'd recommend? Or is there something that I could get a little cheaper that would do a similar job? I called around to the certified Miele dealers in my area and they said that they never have refurbished models because no one ever wants to get rid of them.. Must be a good sign.

Here's what I'm looking to get: https://www.amazon.com/Miele-Complete-C2-Limited-Corded/dp/B00US4DNMU

OP's book was the best of the ones I've read on NK and its policies and prison camps. I recommend it.

Wait wait, your site led to me to find you have a book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FBA900/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

Looks like you already are a writer somewhat. Is this not providing any income?

Not OP, but Stop Walking on Eggshells is the classic book. Highly recommended.

If this it the type of question you have, then I highly recommend Packing For Mars which answers a lot of the simple human question of going to space.

I wanted an Xbox One for Christmas but instead I'm going to get THIS.

Thoughts?

I know I missed the AMA, but if you are an aspiring filmmaker, a cinephile, or even just perpetually broke, you absolutely must read Rebel Without a Crew, R.R's origin story of sorts, which follows the making of Desperado on an impressively minute shoestring budget.

He was 23 at the time. As a 23 year old man who has made a lot of mistakes and has no idea what he's doing in life, this book is one of the few inexhaustible sources of hope I have.
