I've been learning Icelandic for a couple years and I love to help out new learners. Would you be interested in helping me put together a site for learners?
I've been meaning to do it for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I have a good collection of material and a handful of Icelanders at my disposal. It's simply a matter of having someone there to push me to get things done.
Why would you ask a question about taxes without asking what those taxes pay for? They pay for the shit everyone needs.
As for learning the language, there are two decent books I can recommend: Colloquial Icelandic and Beginner's Icelandic. But nothing is going to save you from the fuckton of grammar you have to learn within the first 40 pages or so. Spend the extra on the companion CDs.
I'm new enough to Icelandic not to be able to reply fluently, but I can read and understand thanks to [Colloquial Icelandic] (http://www.amzn.com/041542707X). I bought it at Eymundsson in Reykjavík and saw it at every bookstore. It has lots of easy but meaty reading passages.
I'm also new to Reddit, so let's see if that link formatting worked.
Colloquial Icelandic is pretty good if you're ok with grammatical terms

We even have an entire subreddit devoted to learning Icelandic one of the posters there has even created a memrise wordpack linked in the sidebar. Colloquial Icelandic also comes highly recommended.

Beginner's Icelandic by Helga Hilmisdóttir Is a good resource. It comes with discs with examples of pronunciation. The pronunciation guide is written for Brits which it's only evident in one example. It gives a simple overview of the language.
Other than that I would say that pretty much everyone you will meet will speak English. Almost to the point of frustration if you are trying to learn icelandic.
I can recommend this one, we are using it in our courses: http://www.amazon.de/Learning-Icelandic-Audur-Einarsdottir/dp/9979319194
Hi,
I have been trying to learn a bit Icelandic myself, as a Norwegian, I do see some similiarities between the two languages, but belive me when I say that Icelandic is crazy difficult. It's not to put you off, but you have to be prepeared.
I bought a nice little book to get me started, I haven't read so many "learn-languages-yourself books" so I can't really comparere, but I found this to be helpful (looks like it's sold out :( )
Icelandic have, as you pointed out, grammatical genders, wich means that you will have to learn what "gender" a noun have. Icelandic have 3 genders, masculin, feminin and neuter. You will have to learn the genders with the nouns. The difficult thing with grammatical genders is that it does not seem to follow any rules. (In Norwegian for instance, "Pike", wich means "little girl" is a masculin noun)
Some nice websites

Hi, I use Teach Yourself Icelandic preparing for the day I can move there :) (from Spain). Sadly I don't have that much time to keep good at it, but after 6-7 lessons you can at least make out what news articles (mbl.is) are about in my RSS reader
My girlfriend has been using Learning Icelandic by Auður Einarsdóttir, it seems to be sold out at Amazon (unless you want to pay 100 bucks for it http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Icelandic-Audur-Einarsdottir/dp/9979323175/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&qid=1324898274&sr=8-46 ), but you could get someone here to get it and ship it to you.

'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman is partially set in Iceland, but it's only a small part of the book.
'Frost on My Moustache' by Tim Moore is an unusual travel account of both Iceland and Norway.
Svar við punktum 1 og 2 geturðu fundið í þessum ágætu fyrirlestrum. https://www.audible.com/pd/Science-Technology/Earths-Changing-Climate-Audiobook/B00D8J4GAU
Hvað punkt þrjú varðar er það vissulega heppilegt að plöntumassi aukist vegna auknunar CO2, sérstaklegt í ljósi þess að skógar-og landeyðing ásamt ósjálfbærri jarðvegsnýtingu og annara þátta innan LULUCF, er einn stærsti þáttur aukningar CO2 í andrúmslofti. Plöntur vaxa meira þegar þeim er gefin meiri koltvísýringur, í rauninni alveg óháð því hvort þær séu C3, C4 eða CAM. Þessvegna er gúrkum, tómötum o.s.frv. gefin auka CO2 í gróðurhúsum. Hinsvegar þýðir það ekki að við séum að njóta þess á Íslandi, þvertámóti virðist gróðurþekja vera að minnka [amk á árunum 2002-2013], en sömu aðstæður eru enn við.
Áhrif aukins CO2 í andrúmslofti eru ekki grá, kannski væru þau það ef þetta væri allt að gerast mun hægar og á mun lengra tímabili, en það er ekki raunin. Það að það séu kostir þýðir ekki að þeir vegi nálægt ókostunum. Það er farið yfir þetta í miklum smáatriðum í Loftlagsskýrslunni í upphafsinnleggi (sem fjallar um þær breytingar sem við megum eiga von á) en líka í fyrirlestrunum hér að ofan. Þó módel séu mjög oft vitlaus, enda erfitt að spá í framtíðina og vísindin bakvið þau geta verið óheyrilega flókin, þá benda langflest módel í sömu átt, sjá skýrslu úr upphafsinnleggi. Bara súrnun sjávar ætti að vera nóg til að ganga til drastískra aðgerða.
Breyting. Þessi bók fer yfir hvernig loftlagsmódel virka auk þess að fara yfir helstu atriði loftlagsvísinda. Get ekki sagt að ég hafi lesið hana í þaula, enda var hún bara svona aukalesefni í einum áfanga sem ég var í. https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0521602432/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/
>en það er heldur mikil hystería í gangi hjá almenningi vegna þess að athyglissjúkir vísindamenn eru að elska athyglina af einhverjum dómdagsspám.
Við erum ekki að tala um nokkra „athyglissjúka“ vísindamenn heldur vísindasamfélagið. Og við erum nú þegar byrjuð að sjá afleiðingar loftlagsbreytinga, sjá skýrslu í upphafsinnleggi.
Breyting. Þessi bók fer líka í málin mjög vel https://www.amazon.com/Global-Warming-Sir-John-Houghton/dp/1107463793
Svarið við spurningunni er já, en það sannar bara að vinstri endinn á Laffer kúrvunni er í núlli og segir ekkert um restina.
Og hvað í ósköpunum á þessi mynd að sýna? Þetta er beint upp úr How to Lie With Statistics (skalinn byrjar ekki í núlli, mismunandi prósentur á 2 ásum, ómögulegt að vita hvað er hvað).
