The Canadian medical ethicists, Dr. Margaret Somerville, perhaps said it best: "A common error made by those who want to justify infant male circumcision on the basis of medical benefits is that they believe that as long as some such benefits are present, circumcision can be justified as therapeutic, in the sense of preventive health care. This is not correct. A medical-benefits or "therapeutic" justification requires that:

  1. The overall the medical benefits should outweigh the risks and harms of the procedure required to obtain them.

  2. That this procedure is the only reasonable way to obtain these benefits.

  3. That these benefits are necessary to the well-being of the child.

None of these conditions is fulfilled for routine infant male circumcision."

I urge you to purchase a copy of "American Circumcision" so you and she can watch it together.

Circumcision in America

Doctors in America are paid for each service they perform. Circumcision is a service. Doctors in America have been promoting circumcision for more than 125 years, so they can make more money. It has become part of the culture.

Most circumcisions are performed on infants, because they are too young to object.

Circumcision is injurious, destructive, and NOT medically necessary. The practice of circumcision in America is declining as Americans wise up.

Here are some websites with very good information.

Here are some foreign medical advisories that do not recommend circumcision.

Medical benefits from non-therapeutic infant circumcision are described as "potential" which means that they don't actually exist, but might exist.

Here is a good review:

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), despite its name, actually is a trade association whose primary mission is to advance the business and financial interests of its members. Its members profit from doing child circumcisions, so anything it says about circumcision is highly biased. Anything the AAP says about child circumcision should be rejected .

I pray that you will be able to save your son. She must be careful to NOT sign the consent for circumcision form that will probably be presented when she checks into the hospital.

Are you aware you can cheaply manufacture lube? I was interested in experimenting with it (actually, it was kind of necessary when I got my fleshlight) and it's really easy to make. I think you can do it with cornstarch, however I used xanthan gum (edit: you can probably find it cheaper than that link, that's just the one I got, in fact, here it is for a lot cheaper). Here's one guide using corn starch. Here's a guide using xanthan gum. I found it was only necessary to use xanthan gum and the glycerin and GSE were unnecessary. The only downside to this is that it doesn't have quite the amazing shelf life of commercial lube. Also, make sure that if you're storing it, it is in an airtight container as it gets rather weird when it drys out.

I just want to mention that soap-free body wash works great and won't upset the balance under the prepuce. I use Old Spice Dry Skin Defence (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049MK7DA). This isn't relevant for babies though.

A little more far afield. This is a link to a book called "The Politics of Reproductive Ritual." It is kind of old (1982), and somewhat academic, but interesting and full of info that would still be current. I am also guessing that it would be in some public or college libraries or you might be able to order it through your state library system.

These Champion boxer briefs are really supportive and they don't stretch out. You can get them at Target. You could also wear a ManHood to prevent chafing.

This essay explains the foreskin dowry incident in a lot more detail: What the Bible Reveals About Circumcision and Sexual Violence.
