This was one of the first Bond films I ever saw {introduced to the franchise via [this boxed set] (https://www.amazon.com/James-Bond-Collection-Vol-Special/dp/B00006BH8G/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1469022358&sr=8-4&keywords=James+Bond+special+edition+dvds)}, so that probably counts for a lot, as this is my second favorite film of the franchise, second only to Casino Royale.
+Timothy Dalton is at his best here. He's angry, he's out for revenge, and he is the Bond of the novels.
+Robert Davi as Franz Sanchez is great. He's charming, funny, but also a terrifying villain. For a drug-dealing villain, he's actually likeable.
+I don't hear or see many people giving Pam Lowell any love. She's one of my favorite Bond Girls. She's tough, badass, doesn't need saving like so many of them do, and is really helpful to Bond. (I generally am not a fan of 'useless' Bond Girls who are only there to look pretty)
+I am a sucker for revenge tales. The more gruesome and painful for the baddies, the better.
+Benicio Del Toro as Dario...ooh, this guy is creepy, scary, and out of his mind. Great performance.
That being said, I am not letting nostalgia cloud my ability to see that this film isn't perfect. I don't like Talisa Soto's Lupe in this film, as I find her quite wooden. Wayne
Campbell'sNewton's character feels totally out of place here. Finally, I don't like the high school drama between Lupe and Pam; could totally have done without that. But these are minor gripes and don't take away from the overall awesomeness of this film. For its dark, serious tone, great characters (Bond, Sanchez, Dario, Pam, Q going out in the field), great action (Awesome pre-credits teaser, the underwater fight, and the tanker chase in particular), and great score, it's no surprise that this is my second favorite Bond film, and is one of only 3 films I feel comfortable giving a 10/10.
Thanks man! Yeah, the new one from Spectre is pretty damn nice, I got lucky enough to see the same model at an Omega dealer a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous.
Absolutely nothing wrong with an $80 watch though, I've funneled a ton of money into the more affordable ones to love and cherish until I could get this one. If I can make a recommendation, the best one I ever got for the cost was the Orient Ray. Here's the newer version of it on Amazon, cannot recommend it enough!
The watches can be done better for similar prices.
For the Connery Submariner-style watch, a Seiko SKX007 (now discontinued, so going up in second-hand price) or the Orient Ray are good, automatic pieces that can be found for $200 or less, stand out on their own, and look good paired with a Bond Nato (green on black, IIRC, 1-2mm too small for the lugs, if you want to get picky) strap.
For the Craig Bond Spectre Seamaster look, the Seiko SNZH57 looks very similar, is popular in the modding community as a start for a modded Fifty Five (google it if you're interested, I don't know much about it), and also looks good on a Bond Nato (grey on black strap).
It's almost inevitable when you enjoy a character you acquire some of his traits. And why not? He's cool. And for the most part, what you'll acquire is good. So to answer your question, yes, to one degree or another I've used Bond books (and movies) as self-help.
Here's something to add to your Bond arsenal: James Bond's Salad Dressing
>Mix five parts of red-wine vinegar with one part extra-virgin olive oil. The vinegar overload is essential. Add a halved clove of garlic, half a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a good grind of black pepper and a teaspoon of white granulated sugar. Mix well, remove the garlic and dress the salad.
It's from Solo by William Boyd. So maybe not from the true source -- Fleming -- but good enough.
Thanks for the book recommendation. I added it to my to-buy list on Abebooks.com!
They're called VARGR. Strange title I know haha. I have yet to read them but ONLY because the first volume is coming out next week with the first 6 issues. If you can wait a little longer, you can get all of them for a little cheaper than if you got them all separate! And in a nice book.
Edit: Amazon says it comes it July 5th, but any good comic book store would have it when it comes out on June 15th

A cool gift that won't break the bank: the Union Jack bulldog from Skyfall is $70.
If you want to get something that's not just a curio, you can search eBay for single volumes of Easton's leather-bound reprints of Ian Fleming's books. Right now The Man With the Golden Gun is going on eBay for $100. I've seen the whole set go for $4k+, but individual books are not super-expensive.
I didn't see any, but the Tom Ford sunglasses from Casino Royale can also be found on eBay occasionally for about $100. The Skyfall version usually go for $300+.
Authentic (non-repro) movie posters for the more recent films can also be had for around $100 in good, unfolded condition.
Coffee table books like James Bond: 50 Years of Movie Posters and others can be had on Amazon for around $30, or so, new.
Or you could go the more consumable route: Bollinger ($50-$65) or The Macallan (the 12 is about $50 or so) and a Bluray. The La Grande Annee 1990, if you can find it, would be more authentic but probably a little pricey (last I saw a few months ago it was $200) and, if a tailored suit and a Rolex are out of the question, then The Macallan 1928 is as well (about $40k, give or take...if you can find it).
Nice Casio!
Haven't heard a bad thing about it so far.
If you want to get something as close as possible to the Spectre Seamaster without buying a fake watch you can check out the Debert Automatic.
A very affordable Rolex Submariner look-a-like would be the Invicta 8926ob, the Quartz Version 8932ob is even more affordable and probably the better watch for someone who is not into watches much.
Both Invictas are look-a-likes of newer Submariners though and not of the 6538 Connery wore.
The closest affordable homage of the vintage Sub I could find is the Tiger Concept 5508 homage, the 5508 was a small crown Submariner with 100m depth rating while the 6538 was a big crown Submariner with 200m rating.
If you'd like to get the watch of literary Bond Tiger Concepts has covered you again with their Explorer 1016 homage which people believe to be the watch Fleming had in mind for Bond.
I listen to their podcast pretty frequently (here) and they just ran a series on the scores of James Bond.
I know they're big fans of the scores of Bond (going so far as to buy the From Russia With Love vinyl without having a record player to listen to it) so I can imagine they'd probably have one of the various instrumental CDs dedicated to the scores.
While it appears to be out of print, the City of Prague Philharmonic's The Ultimate James Bond Collection has a good amount of scores from each individual Bond film. I'm sure you can find similar CDs or digital downloads out there.
I got this during the holidays on Amazon when it dropped to like $80 iirc. Had all of them and a special slot for spectre. Bluray is definitely the way to go.

I bought the mass market paperbacks from Penguin one at a time and like the cover art better than the updated current paperbacks by Thomas & Mercer publishing. I believe the link below will take you to the Penguin edition of CR on Amazon, but if not just click on the "Mass Market" option and make sure Penguin is listed as the publisher. OR if you prefer the "current" versions of the paperbacks they should be the ones under the default "Paperback" option with Prime shipping availability. The key, if buying one by one, is to make sure the publisher matches each time you buy. Amazon always has it listed.
Casino Royale
No, that's 'The James Bond Collection'.
'The Ultimate James Bond Collection' is the one with the black cover and white gunbarrel detailing.
Both sets contain all 24 movies (or only up to 'Skyfall' if you got the original releases) and the difference is that the "Ultimate" release contains digital download codes and a bonus disc with a lot of the features from the 'Bond 50' bonus disc, plus 2 featurettes that promote 'Spectre' along with the previously mentioned 'Everything or Nothing' documentary.
The white cover one just has a digital code for the 2 'Spectre' featurettes.
> Oh boy..
Haha why, is the authenticity of those two constantly in debate?
Anyway, thank you I made sure to get one with Spectre and this one should be ok!
The short version is that Thunderball was originally developed as a screenplay with producer Kevin McClory in the late '50s, and when it didn't come together as a film, Ian Fleming thought he was free to develop it as a novel and sell it separately. McClory disagreed and sued Fleming, and won the rights to Thunderball (when EON decided to make it as a film, they had to partner with McClory to get it made).
After that, McClory spent the rest of his life trying to bootstrap the Thunderball rights into a claim to the underlying film rights to James Bond, which he was never able to do.
The book [The Battle for Bond] (https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Bond-Robert-Sellers/dp/0955767008/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1503192255&sr=1-1&keywords=the+battle+for+bond) lays out the case in great detail.
the ultimate book that every james bond fan needs is the james bond archives by taschen. it's gigantic and the most beautiful coffee table book one can get! highly recommended!
Here's Casino Royale in the copy that's my favorite. The rest are in a similar style. Just great all around.

This is my favorite gift I've ever gotten, as you may guess by my flair. http://www.amazon.com/Royal-Doulton-Bulldogs-Figurine-Jack/dp/B009XEKI4C/
My son gave me "Bond by Design" and "James Bond: 50 years of Movie Posters." Both are excellent books.
If you think that's exciting, grab a copy of the james bond archives:

Not with this particular jacket style. On Amazon you get covers with just white, black and red color published by Thomas & Mercer. I really prefer the Penguin publisher series from 2002.
