It's not hard for a newcomer to start into the series--there are currently 10 stories to experience (9 console games, and a mobile phone game that's been made into a movie). Everyone sort of talks about how complicated the story is, but really, the series isn't as complicated as newcomers like to joke :) It's just that it was hard to play them all from 2002-2012 when they were spread out across different platforms, and skipping out on one of the games essentially meant skipping out on a story that drove the overall plot forward. But now that they're all remastered as PS4 bundles, it should be fairly easy for fans old and new to catch up with the overarching story before KH3 is released.

---

What makes the series fun is how deep the lore goes. If you want to start the series with a PS4, you should wait for the $50 "Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix", a collection of the first six remastered titles that'll be released on March 28. Afterward, if you enjoy the games, KH2.8 contains the final three. If you happen to get a hold of a PS3 and you don't want to wait, the $17 "Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix" collection contains the first two games of the series (Kingdom Hearts and the sequel KH: Chain of Memories) and a movie for the third (Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days).

There have been a lot of Kingdom Hearts games that have come out since Kingdom Hearts 1 came out in 2002. There's been the first game, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 2, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts Coded, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep 0.2 -A fragmentary passage.

The collections are the newest versions of these games. Kingdom Hearts 1.5, Kingdom Hearts 2.5, and Kingdom Hearts 2.8 are the collections. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 is just both of those two collections on a single disc, but made for the PS4 rather than the PS3.

The cheapest way to get these games is either to get 1.5+2.5 and 2.8 used, or to buy The Story So Far, which is a digital version of all of the collections, which include all of the games so far. It's only $40, and you get six games and three movies (358/2 Days, Re:Coded, and X: Back Cover are all movies). All in One is exactly like The Story So Far, but also includes Kingdom Hearts 3. It's $100, so you don't save any money by getting All in One rather than The Story So Far.

My whole point being that you shouldn't pay more than $40 USD for all of the games prior to Kingdom Hearts 3.

If the black Keyblade is metal/sturdy and looks accurate and detailed, I'd say it would probably be a good deal.

Nabbed these links from Amazon as well. Generally, when I think of gifts from games/anime/all that jazz, I tend to lean towards plushies. I also don't know which games she's played, so I just went with more iconic characters/enemies. You could also look at figurines, but they can be pricey so I didn't include them in the list.

u/beribboned · 10 pointsr/KingdomHearts

pasting this from elsewhere, but

Fairly cheap options:

  • KH Manga (the ones with release dates before 2013 are a different publisher and not as nice quality, if that matters to you), or the art book
  • Play Arts Kairi is still pretty cheap. (Some of the others might still be available for decent prices, I'm not sure)
  • Some of the avatar mascot straps are okay priced.
  • Formation Arts: Kairi, Twilight Thorn, there are some more on the search that are under $30
  • There's some probably less-than-legit stuff on Amazon, too, if you're okay with that: necklaces, keyblade necklace sets, plushes, decals
  • You could also check out Etsy if you want to send something custom; "paopu" or "wayfinder" are also good search options if you go that route.
  • At the Square Enix event the other day, the price list included some official Keyblade keychains for $20 (Kingdom Key, Kingdom Key D, Rainfell, Wayward Wind, Earthshaker) but for the life of me I don't know where you could find those online.

Seconding that keyblade necklaces are a cute gift for pretty cheap, though (there are a bunch of different sets of them available and I'm sure they're all bootlegs, but hey, so are the ones I've had for seven years and they're still cute).

Is it worth it?
The answer is YES 95% of the time.
When is it NOT worth it? If you've played these games countless times and have the collection already on the PS3... or if you simply do not like the games.

What is it? It's 4 full, finalized, updated games and 2 other games that were converted into 'movies' essentially. This means you have about 300+ hours of gameplay here if you really want to get into everything. Not only that, it is EVERYTHING from the Kingdom Hearts series except the new 2.8 release and the future KH III release.

You get the full finalized version of Kingdom hearts 1 and kingdom hearts 2. You get re:com and the other game that I haven't got to yet.

I don't know why you are saying the price is $60. I get it at $35.00 on AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-1-5-2-5-ReMIX-PlayStation/dp/B01M32FMUL/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1498326651&sr=1-1&keywords=Kingdom%2Bhearts%2Bps4&th=1

At $60 it's simply not the going price. Go find it for $40 or so.

Be assured that all bugs have been patched (well, the important ones).

Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5

Kingdom Hearts 2.8

All the games are on the PS4 for you to play. 1.5 refers to the Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories and the 358/2 Days as a cutscene movie. 2.5 is Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix, Birth By Sleep: Final Mix and Re:Coded as a cutscene movie.

u/Serapius · 1 pointr/KingdomHearts

Well, since you already have a PS4, care if I [introduce] (https://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Dogma-Dark-Arisen-PlayStation-Standard/dp/B071P9BPHB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505167296&sr=8-1&keywords=dragon%27s+dogma+ps4) a few great (some upcoming) games that are somewhat similar to Kingdom Hearts? I feel like you made a good choice with your purchase.

u/tehponycorn · 3 pointsr/KingdomHearts

You really won't. KH3's is built on top of a solid 7+ games. The game does it's best to recap things, but I don't imagine it'd work if you have no knowledge of the series at all. Is it possible? Yes. Will you be very confused though? Yes.

If you pick up KH3, I'd recommend you also pick up The Story So Far. The PS4 version of the game is only $25 on Amazon, so you'd be getting pretty much the entire KH series for less than $50, which is a steal.

More than that, you'd be able to play the entire series and best understand KH3.

u/Gestrid · 3 pointsr/KingdomHearts

If you enjoy the music now, once you finish the series, you should definitely listen to /u/ProjectDestati's music. They do orchestrated versions of several tracks. (I'd suggest not looking up the music itself until you finish the series, by the way.)

Also, I'm not sure if you know this, but there's also Kingdom Hearts 2.8, which you should play after you finish all of the 1.5+2.5 disc.

u/midnightpictureshow · 1 pointr/KingdomHearts

I wish I didn't look at the prices again just now... D:

They really are kinda pricey, but there's that US company that's been churning out the pewter keyblade keychains that others have posted about in the sub if you're interested. I uploaded this for ya for comparison.

You can find those on Amazon pretty easily and I don't think they're any more than $7 USD.

u/Phishphan77 · 2 pointsr/KingdomHearts

If you follow this link. Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far - PlayStation 4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J2KVXY3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_A8eECbRR6Q0D7

You can buy it for a slight markup. Also you search the other listings and you’ll see that amazon is still taking orders. Hope that’s helpful.

u/surfboard-lover · 3 pointsr/KingdomHearts

They might not have been. I've done events like this before where we needed personpower to operate a booth (hand out things, organize a line, etc.) and we always hired local booth-staff that we briefed for like 15 minutes before giving them a uniform and putting them on the floor - they are basically paid minimum wage (or more if they are quite attractive and robust...)

They might just be random people that didn't know any better. Still embarrassing for SE but maybe it will help you feel a bit better about it.

All you gotta do is buy this:
https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-1-5-2-5-ReMIX-PlayStation/dp/B01M32FMUL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518286736&sr=8-1&keywords=1.5%2B2.5&dpID=61sjtAYg5zL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch&th=1
AND this:
https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-2-8-Final-Chapter-Prologue/dp/B015HAL2OA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518286743&sr=8-1&keywords=2.8&th=1
Once you have both of those games play through the first linked game and play through it in the exact order its presented as on the disc. Once you complete the disc all the way through play the second game in the exact same fashion. Once you complete that you're ready for KH3. On top of those you can also explore the mobile KH game but it's not required.
If you follow my instructions listed above you won't miss a beat about the KH franchise and will be completely ready for the newest game.

u/Stendal · 1 pointr/KingdomHearts

If you buy The Story So Far, you get every game that's not KH3 represented in some way. It's a pretty good value as you get five games, one smaller game/tech demo, and three movies.

If that's too much, just grab 1.5 + 2.5 Collection. This gives you four games and two movies, and contains KH1 and KH2.

If you're not working with a PS4, you'll need to buy 1.5 and 2.5 separately.

u/OfLittleImportance · 1 pointr/KingdomHearts

Yeah, thanks. For some reason when I googled it, I could only find this page. Someone helped me find the correct page. I should've just went to Amazon and searched for it directly. Thanks for the info.

The only KH merch at Disneyland is the King Mickey Organization pin, it can be found at quite a few of the shops but I always just recommend purchasing from Amazon so you don't have to hunt for it. It still comes with the standard rubber Mickey head pin back and the black card like the other Disney parks pins.

u/Type06 · 4 pointsr/KingdomHearts

Nice!

I remember some time ago I found out about the existence of KHII pins the parks had created.

I used to have this one, but lost it. But hey, at least it's proof I didn't imagine the whole thing.

Well, there are plenty of converters from the PS2 controllers to USB, so try taking a look at amazon for those. They seem to be pretty cheap, all things considered, and then you don't have to buy a new controller or anything.

Did you know Amazon will donate a portion of every purchase if you shop by going to smile.amazon.com instead? Over $50,000,000 has been raised for charity - all you need to do is change the URL!

You can make your problem 999x easier if you go with the PC route. Also, if you miss the nostalgia and really want to play with a ps2 controller buy this, it's what I use and it's compatible with ps1, ps2, and ps3 controllers. I'm using a PS1 right now on it and it works flawlessly. This way, you can use a ps controller on your PC while playing kh2fm. I'm pretty nostalgic myself, but I believe you only need 60 fps on the game to run which isn't much firepower required for most pcs these days.

It's the pewter Kingdom Key (I think the company that makes them is called Monogram?)! I wear mine as a necklace daily. :) https://www.amazon.com/Disney-Kingdom-Hearts-Pewter-Keyring/dp/B0045WL026 (they're also usually found at Gamestop)

u/Super_EMAS · 2 pointsr/KingdomHearts

You canimport it through Amazon, and there was someone who made a patch for it so you can play the game in English. In order to play it on a U.S. PS2, you'll have to softmod it.

I got it as a gift, but I think this is it.

u/tecrogue · 3 pointsr/KingdomHearts

If you can wait until march, you can pick up this which has everything but Dream Drop Distance (available in this package along with a brief story taking place after Birth by Sleep).

u/lunatichigh7777 · 2 pointsr/KingdomHearts

To be fair, Amazon calls it the same thing.

https://smile.amazon.com/Disney-Kingdom-Hearts-Pewter-Keyring/dp/B0045WL026/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1481739192&sr=8-4&sa-no-redirect=1

Given that it's pewter - anyone that keeps their keys in their pocket would probably want to avoid this. Your body heat alone will weaken it and probably cause it to break in short order.
