I am surprised I had to read this far down to see this. You can get 500 heavy-duty 4x6 zip lock bags from Amazon for $20 (You can get smaller quantities also). If you want something a bit bigger, you can get 100 6x9" bags for $12.94. That should be a lifetime supply for this and plenty of other tasks (they can also be used for food storage).

Start sorting them into bags, then either just store the bags in the bins you already have, or from there you will have a better sense what will work best for you.

Hello from Sweden! I use some stacks of the "Sundis" brand sold by amazon Uk. The last link is my main storage solution that i have been building out as they fill up. I am soon up to nine! I have however not bought them on Amazon, two different Swedish retail chains sell identical under different brands. They are around 150-170 SEK for every unite and work great for LEGO because the drawers are 16 studs deep and 6/13 wide.

All depends on how much you want to change up your area. Something like this could do both display and storage while still looking very nice in a dining area. You could also do the cube shelf units and then use various containers for the pieces.

I use a large media shelf for displaying smaller sets and then regular bookshelves for modular buildings. I have a large industrial shelf that I use with plastic shoe boxes for pieces as well as Akro-Mills and Plano containers for the smaller pieces or the unusual pieces I don't have a lot of.

If it helps, what I ended up doing was doing a simple sketch of the room I prefer to build in and then drew in how I wanted to do storage. It helped me figure out exactly what I wanted for storage and display and how I wanted the room to look.

Check out all the options from Akro-Mils

It really depends on how specific/organized you want to be, how much you want to spend, and how much space you have. It’s not all that bad of an idea to mix similar parts in one container to save space and money.

Thanks for the tip on depth. Going to give Akro-Mils a shot since Papimax is a bit intense for what I'm thinking. Will be trying out 2 of the 24 drawer and 1 of the 44 drawer and will see how far that gets me by sorting by brick area (too many unique pieces to keep true storage-by-part affordable). For large flats that get grouped together, I may end up using a pair of simple 3 drawer organizers I have laying around. Worse case I'll get another 44 and take advantage of dividers.

I'd recommend these 4x6 bags, the 2x3 version for smaller pieces, and the half-sandwich (snack) bags for larger or bulk items: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LIOOPO/

Then from there you can throw them in shoeboxes and get large clear containers eventually.

I'm months late to your post, but is this the ones that you bought? https://www.amazon.com/Akro-Mils-10164-Plastic-Storage-Hardware/dp/B000LDH3JC

How have you liked them over the last few months since your post? I'm just starting to buy Lego in bulk and really need some storage options.

As I've recently started down the path of resorting by part rather than color, I too have found the usefulness of a search bin. Based on recommendations, I've picked up a couple of these funnel trays at Harbor Freight. Inexpensive at $3. Or you can go with a similar popular one at Amazon. The sides are not tall so easier to reach into and sift around than typical bins/trays. Then easy to dump back into storage container when done. They're not big so having a couple around is handy to dump out a bigger bin to sort/search through.

The company is Iris USA in the states.

Ah, this is the same one on Amazon UK. These drawers are much sturdier than the typical translucent plastic drawers.

Edit: found them on Amazon US under the "Iris Ohyama 135699". Thanks.

I have this in my garage for my power tools. It's taller, but not necessarily wider, and it's an inch shallower.

You might look at armoires and wardrobes, too. Either wooden, or something like this that's a bit sturdier (ie, metal shelving with a cover): https://smile.amazon.com/SONGMICS-Portable-Wardrobe-Organizer-URYG93G/dp/B06XD26RZH/ref=sr_1_14?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1539888195&sr=1-14&keywords=wardrobe

Small pieces:
Akro mills 64 drawer storage drawers. Sort by shape and consider grouping similar parts.

Medium pieces:
Akro Mills 24 drawer storage drawers.

Large pieces:
Just get 2-gallon buckets with lids from your local hardware store.

Labeling:
Take photos of each part on a white background. Cutout the part from each photo and tape or glue it on the front of each drawer.
