The game supports single joycon multiplayer for both story and scare scraper mode. I recommend getting another set of joycons for their friends and family so 4 people could play at once. It's a $20 increase from the pro controller but it was worth it in my experience. Here is the 8BitDo. Very hard to go back to joycons after playing BOTW on DualShock, and you don’t have to constantly worry about drift issues.
