You're an awesome parent for supporting your son's newfound hobby and making sure he can experience it in the cleanest manner possible. Hopefully we'll be able to be of some help.

> how old are most people on pony forums like this one?

The median is around college age, so mostly 21 and around. I'm towards the higher end at 24. Some of the people on this forum lean a little younger, between 16 and 21.

> there is a side of MLP fandom that isn't kid safe at all. Can you tell me: which websites are best avoided

As always, you should be present as much as possible whenever your son decides to browse the internet.

It's gonna be hard to filter, but my first and probably most helpful piece of advice is always to turn Google SafeSearch on for any computer he might use. It'll be on by default, but just make sure the checkbox is checked.

Official places will be your best bet, since your son can see all sorts of cool and curated pony stuff without potentially interacting with anyone dangerous.

Naturally, you can never go wrong with the official website (www.MyLittlePony.com), which has all sorts of fun games, coloring books, pictures, and videos. Since it's the official website, it's heavily curated by Hasbro staff, so you will be guaranteed to never see questionable content.

Netflix is definitely a safe place; every episode from seasons 1 to 4 is on there, as well as both of the movies. You could even make a dedicated "family time" where everyone watches an episode every night! It also has two documentaries, "A Brony Tale" (starring Applejack/Rainbow Dash's voice actress, Andrea Libman) and "Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony" (starring the creator, the voice of Discord, and the voice of Twilight Sparkle), both of which will do an excellent job of introducing you to the fandom and all the cool stuff the bronies have done.

When it comes to fan content, however...

It will be hard for your son to interact with other My Little Pony fans over the internet, since most internet users are adults and will have fewer filters. I would be cautious allowing him access to sites where other fans congregate.

There are lots of cool videos on YouTube, but some of them might be vulgar or extremely bizarre, and YouTube doesn't do a very good job of hiding that content. I suggest looking up Pony on YouTube with a certain degree of caution... but you will find some really cool stuff there too.

Equestria Daily (http://www.equestriadaily.com) is a great place to find out news regarding the fandom and the show. It does not ever post mature content at all, but its comments sections are frequented by fans. As long as you keep him out of the comments section

Derpibooru (http://www.derpibooru.org) is a site that shares hundreds of thousands of MLP pictures and art made by fans. It has filters that you can set up so that your son never gets exposed to explicit content, including a TV-Y mode. These filters are on by default, so you can peruse it if you want to look at cool pictures with your son. I'd advise against letting him browse alone, however, since they're easy to turn off.

Fimfiction (http://www.fimfiction.net) is a site for fans to write and post fanfiction. It has a mature toggle that hides mature content, but unfortunately it's very easy to turn off. It'll best be browsed with parental supervision, or potentially not at all until your son is a teenager (which means he might not even be a fan of the show anymore by then).

If you want to try and keep your son off the internet...

The official comics are fantastic from both a story and art perspective, and they will keep your son (and you and your husband too!) very entertained.

There are also chapter books that will help your son learn to read. Many are offered at various reading levels, so you can gradually wean your son on bigger and more complex books over time.

There's also an official My Little Pony game for Android, iPhone/iPod/iPad, and Windows Phone, and all sorts of official audiobooks that your son can read along with as well. Since they offer no social features, there's no possible way for your son to interact with anyone dangerous.

Hopefully that's a good enough summary! If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know! Good luck, and have fun ponying-out with your son!

Well, here's a list of items you'll find useful if you decide it's something you might like to pursue.

Round pegbar - get one and tape it to your desk, get another and tape it to your scanner and you'll have a very easy time keeping sheets of paper aligned. Shipping on these is expensive but I couldn't find any other place that sells them. You might be able to 3d print a couple if you have 3d printer access.

Three hole punch - anything that punches holes of the right diameter (1/4 inch) reliably with the same spacing of the pegbar is fine. You probably already have one of these.

Scanner - any scanner that fits letter paper is fine. You probably already have one of these, and if you don't you might be able to use one at a library.

Paper - cheap paper is ideal. This is the cheapest that I know of at $2 for 500 sheets but copy paper isn't hard to find for a reasonable price. Get 2 reams or a big old box. You'll go through it faster than you'd think if you want to make an animation of any meaningful length.

Pencils - It'll be easiest if you have two kinds, but the most important kind is a regular old 2B or 4B pencil. Staedtler Mars Lumographs are the best but really you can use whatever pencil you find around the house, lying on the street, and so on for practice. If you really get into it and you need a lot of pencils, you should get these. The other kind you'll want is a light blue or light green colored pencil. You can use the colored pencil to lay down really rough, quick sketches for each frame and do a refined, accurate drawing for each frame with the regular old pencil. Then, when you scan the frames in color, you can remove the colored pencil marks using a technique similar to this. I'd probably use Blender for this because it's easier to remove the blue lineswith the whole image sequence. If you need help figuring out how to do this efficiently you can PM me and I'll give you a comprehensive tutorial. After the non-photo blue is removed you can take it into OpenToonz or Krita to colorize the animation if you wish.

Erasers - it's very important to have a high-quality eraser! I recommend these. They usually erase very cleanly unless you dug really hard into the paper when drawing.

Book - For animation, start with The Animator's Survival Kit. It's got lots of good information in it. Absolutely essential book. If you can't afford it, you can find illegal copies online.

For drawing instruction, visit /r/artfundamentals and do all of the exercises. It's fine to use pencils for the exercises as long as you use them like you'd use a pigment liner, that is, pressing just hard enough to get a reasonably dark line and correcting mistakes by incorporating them into your drawing, rather than with an eraser. For this reason I recommend getting and using up one pigment liner just so you can get used to how it feels to use them. Then you can do the rest of them with pencils if you want, since you know how to use a pencil like a pigment liner, or you can get an inexpensive fountain pen that will let you refill from fountain pen ink in a bottle, which can be extremely cost-effective as long as you don't get into the habit of buying lots of expensive pens and every ink color under the sun.

All in all, including the book and excluding the items that you probably already have (scanner, 3 hole punch) you're probably looking at around
I feel like I should warn you at this point before you spend any money that you'll need to either have or acquire a pathological tolerance for tedium if you want to be successful at animating and drawing. You'll definitely be going through at least a ream of drawings before you're any good. As long as you're OK with that, go for it.

For two pegbars, two reams of paper, a dozen good pencils, 4 good erasers you're looking at around $60. If you have some of this stuff around the house you might only need the pegbars, which is about $24. In any case I'd encourage you to buy the book I recommended if you can afford it. It's really helpful.

I'm no expert by any means, this is only a hobby, but I'll give it a shot. Also keep in mind that I'm a film photographer, so some of my knowledge may be irrelevant due to you using digital. You've already got it easier than me thanks to the digital camera.

I put a glossary at the end if any terms are too photography-y for ya.

Your biggest difficulty will most likely be finding a space appropriate for the shot. Large open floor space, some way to whitewash the floor if that's what you're going for. You also will need a high ceiling, the standard 9ft ceilings won't be nearly high enough to obtain that ratio of subject to empty space, not sure if I stated that clearly.

Another of your biggest difficulties will be rigging up your camera mount and reaching said camera once it's mounted. I honestly can't think of any easy setup for you to use. If I think of something I'll let you know.

Now on to lighting. It's a very soft even light, so you cannot have any lights shining directly on the subjects or you're going to get "hotspots" and hard shadows. I would suggest hanging a white sheet off to the left of the shot and shining several bright lights onto that. I would say to just grab the cheapest work light you can find at your local hardware store, but I'm afraid that may be too yellow of a light. If you're going for the "pure" look of white on white on white, the yellow light will throw that off. As such, I'm not sure what to suggest for a light source, just make sure it's bright and you diffuse it by either bouncing the light off a white sheet, or shining it through a white sheet.

Now on to the camera itself, I don't know what kinda camera you have, but this shouldn't be a terribly difficult shot to obtain. It's well lit, there's no motion, and the subjects are at the same focal distance. No matter what camera you're using, make sure the flash is turned off, or all your hard work setting up the soft even lighting will be for nothing.

If you have a generic digital camera, simply take several shots flipping through the different preset modes, I expect portrait will get you the best results. Once you've found the mode you think is best, you may attempt to tweak settings from there to obtain the results you want, but many of these generic cameras either don't have many settings to play with, or they are not easy to access.

If you've got a DSLR (Digital Single Lense Reflex)(they generally look about like this with interchangeable lenses) then you've got the potential to get a much better shot if you've got the time to mess with it. Many DSLRs also have preset modes, you may be able to use one of those as a baseline to start from like before.

Because it's well lit and no motion, you shouldn't need to do anything fancy. If you don't have presets or they aren't doing the trick I'd set the ISO for about 400 and the shutter speed for about 1/32, then adjust the aperture until the picture has the brightness you want, bring it into focus and take the shot. Then tweak it from there to your pleasing.

Very brief summary of photography terms and how they'll effect/help you. If you have a DSLR, you can adjust all these settings, if it's a generic digital camera then I don't know how much control you'll have over these things. I glossed over a lot of stuff here:

  • ISO: this term is a carry over from film. It's basically how quickly the film is exposed when subjected to light. Lower ISO needs more light exposure, higher ISO needs very little. As such, your shutter speed should be adjusted to your ISO, low ISO = slow shutter speed, high ISO = fast shutter speed. Your digital camera still has an ISO setting which you can adjust on the fly.
400 is a good middle ground for most scenarios. I've personally found that 800 will come out grainy, but that's with film, I dunno if that applies to digital. 200 is good for well-lit, still subjects, so you may want to try it for this photo.
  • Shutter Speed: How quickly your shutter opens and closes. This is measured in fractions of a second, the middle ground is 1/32, usually just called 32. You'll adjust this depending on lighting and if the subject is moving. If you're shooting a sports game on a sunny day, you'll use a faster shutter like 64 or 128 because there's plenty of light, and because of the motion a slower shutter would cause the photo to blur any motion.
  • Aperture: this determines how much light is let into the camera, the aperture is measured by f-stops such as f/1.8 or f/22. Aperture is tied to your ISO and shutter speed. If it's a bright day, choose a higher f-stop, dark night = lower aperture. If you're shooting a fast shutter speed with a low ISO, you'll need to choose a lower aperture to let more light in quickly or else your film will be underexposed. In your situation, simply adjust the aperture till the image looks appropriately bright, then adjust it if your photo comes out light or dark.
Your aperture will also affect your focal length. Higher f-stop = longer focal length, lower f-stop = shorter focal length. I can elaborate on this later, but it shouldn't effect you on this shot.
  • Focus: I know I don't have to define this, but here's a tip for getting a good sharp focus. Set your aperture as low as it goes, usually f/1.8, focus your shot, then set your aperture to where you want it for the shot. This has to do with how the aperture effects your focal length, which I can elaborate on later.

I know I went over a lot of information very quickly and I glossed over a lot of stuff. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask!

Since you asked so politely, sure...

Just to get it out of the way, a "life number" sounds to me like numerology, not astrology--numbers by themselves are not important in astrology, even though it uses geometry. People interested in astrology might also be interested in numerology, but the two systems are not related. I can't think of a time I've ever heard of such a thing as an astrological "life number"--but my experience is exclusively Western. I have only a vague knowledge of Chinese animals/elements [which will not be discussed here at all] and--to coin a phrase--Vedic astrology is all Sanskrit to me.

Also, modern metaphysical practitioners generally believe in correlative effects between these symbols & one's life, not causative ones--so we can just put that straw man away, please. The idea is merely that these symbols are significant in our lives, and may influence us--like a cold day may influence us to wear a coat or feel chilly if we don't. Fate isn't set in stone--you're not destined for misery.

OK, on to astrology itself...

Astrology has many factors, so it gets convoluted quickly. To begin with, what most people think of as "their sign" is merely their Sun sign--that is, the constellation the Sun was approximately in front of, when looked at from Earth, on the day they were born. Yes, you can't literally see the constellations behind the Sun with the naked eye, but we know where they are because.. science. Also, it's "approximate" because in reality some constellations take up more [or less] than their allotment [it's averaged-out: 360° circle/12 signs = 30° each].

But what most people don't realise is that in an actual horoscope, every planet is taken into account. So, while you may have your Sun in Virgo [happy birthday sometime around now, btw], your Moon could be in any sign, along with your Mars, Venus, etc. And each one plays a role; the Sun just happens to be considered the strongest/most important [because it physically influences life on Earth the most, as well]. There are also "points" in the sky that aren't even planets, the most significant of which being the Rising aka Ascendant sign: this is which constellation was "rising" on the eastern horizon when you were born. It obviously changes throughout the day as the Earth rotates, hence the importance of time-of-birth in an accurate natal chart.

Not only are there those ~12 factors to take into account, there are then the angles/relationships between them. These are called aspects. There's usual another half dozen or so of these... For example, if you happened to be born under a full moon, that would put your Moon in Pisces, which would make you emotionally dreamy & silly, but it would also mean that your Sun & Moon had an "opposition"--they're 180° apart in the sky. It would generally mean your day-to-day exterior persona of being a neat-freak may be at odds with your internal feelings & desires to be derptastic [assuming you hadn't already worked this problem out psychologically]. On the other hand, being born under a new moon would put your Sun & Moon in "conjunction" at 0°, and you would be expected to have a strong, consistent focus to your persona, both intellectually & emotionally. Again, this is somewhat approximate because aspects are usually not exact--within about 5° is considered still significant, termed "within the orb of influence" ['in orb,' for short].

Then there are houses in the chart, for different areas of life, as well as the transits of where planets are now in relation to how they were when you were born..

I could go on......?

Feel free to PM, too [anyone who might happen to read this, not just OP].

If you want to look into it more on your own, here are some good resources:

A good book for beginners is [The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need.](http://www.amazon.com/Only-Astrology-Book-Youll-Ever/dp/0812885066 "It isn't the only resource you'll ever need if you want to get serious about astrology, but it does a great job of fleshing out basic knowledge/skills in a simple/straightforward way.")

And if you want to get a more accurate personally relevant daily reading, [Astro.com](http://www.astro.com/cgi/hk.cgi "I hope this link works for someone who isn't logged in..") is The astrology site--though most of its content is too complicated for beginners. To get the reading, you need to enter your birth data, though. An account is free, and can hold unlimited birth data [as far as I know] for all your friends/family members/random strangers, and I've never received any spam from them [or if I do, it gets caught in my Google filter]. Cafeastrology might be better for beginners, but I only go there for things like descriptions of transits.

Haha, yea I had the hardest time putting you in either the I or E camp. I actually edited it a few times, back and forth. The best way to tell if you are one group or the other is to look at what you like to do to "recharge." Do you find doing things in large groups of individuals energizing, or draining? Do you find time/doing things alone replenishes you, or saps you?

Of course we all have times where we crave social interaction. We're social creatures. Leaning more towards one or the other is usually the best way to see it.

If you find either situation equally beneficial, you may be an "ambivert", a very rare quality.

As for taking a test without paying for it, I've always kinda found the tests to be a bit... shallow? Often times the individual who designed the test puts the spin of their own personality type on the test without realizing it.

Plus, personalities are tricky things with lots of subtlety. For instance, in 'real life' I'm very strongly an introvert, but get me (or most introverts) started on a passion topic and I will talk you ear off (as some of my silly text-wall posts can attest to.) In addition, I can be more "ambiverted" online, because I am free to compose my thoughts before releasing them. I can also choose to be invisible, or participate. So, environment and situation can play a huge part in understanding your personality type, and a poorly phrased question may send you off on a tangent.

There are free tests out there; the key terms to plug into a search engine would be "personality test" and "Meyers Brigs." There are other adaptations too, such as one that is typically used in businesses that assigns colors to the types, and simplifies things a bit.

Then there are learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) on top of personality types. If you can get a handle on both personality type and learning style, you can very quickly understand what matters to an individual (even if that individual is yourself), and the best way to spin ideas you are trying to convey or learn.

If you are interested in this, I would personally recommend either reading Gifts Differing (written by the Isabel Briggs Myers) or Type Talk (another excellent book on the subject). Both books are fantastic resources, and I count the information in them among the top five most valuable things I have ever learned about anything. It's basically a very practical, applied psychology, without all the BS and theoretical stuff that I will never need to know. Both books are fairly short, while still getting their point across. They are also really interesting, without being "heady."

Reading the books gives a more holistic picture of personality typing, and do a lot better job pinning down subtleties that often get glossed over in a simple test.

The brushable pony toys are fantastic. You can find a good selection at any superstore (Target, Wal-Mart, etc). I suggest Target- it's got more officially licensed Hasbro stuff, with some things that can only be found there. They've also got pony blankets and stuffed toys there.

There's a few different types of pony toys. You've got the blindbags- little, hard plastic figurines that often come in bags where you can't tell what you're getting. Great for a surprise, sort of like a pony lottery.
There are larger hard plastic toys, usually in a set. They're fun and well-made, great for playtime. A lot easier to manage than the brushables... pony hair can get crazy at times.
The ones with brushable hair probably have the most potential, and they're what I would recommend. Even the smaller, one-pony ones (cost about $5 US) come with an accessory or pet, so they provide a little more value than just the toy. There are a bunch of guides online on styling doll hair, with a few pony-specific ones for making the hair accurate to the show. Styling definitely takes adult supervision, but it makes a nice activity for if/when she's old enough to have the attention span.

It sucks that you don't get the show... the new show's fantastic, for kids as well as adult. One of those awesome shows that appeals to every age so parents don't feel themselves losing braincells as they watch, hehe. I believe the show's on Netflix, if you have it or could get it, and Season One has a DVD coming out in December. Might make a good Christmas present.

You definitely came to the right place to ask. People can say what they will about bronies and other adult fans, but when it comes down to it we're just fans of the new show. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to drop on by and ask! We're a pretty friendly bunch, especially when it involves helping out a fellow pony fan like your daughter.

Pfft, nothing beats my peanut butter chicken. Well, actually it's Coolio's recipie but it's still tasty. Serve it with a bunch of momokan brown rice to soak up all those leftover juices and it's heaven.

Also, what kind of cheese? better be something good. I hear it's cheddar, but the aging on cheddar is VERY important. As a person who happens to live in what some would consider the cheese capital I will accept nothing but the best. If you want some Hook's, or Carr Valley let me know.

Also, the steak recipie has been modified with extra mushrooms and bacon. Granted, it's warm enough to grill outside now so I probably won't make it again until next winter. Grilled steaks are the best.

Book(s):

This is a book (By Demetri Martin) - A collection of funny short stories, ideas, and other great stuff.

The Andromeda Strain (By Michael Crichton) - A great sci-fi story about a space probe which causes everyone in a small town it crashed near to die and how a team of biophysicists handle it.

Games:

TF2 and SMNC are both free on Steam and totally worth playing.

I'd also suggest Bastion, Just Cause 2, and Minecraft if you haven't played any of them. All very fun games that can take up a lot of your time.

Oh, and one last thing...

I keep hearing about this book called something like '60 shades of may'.

People are talking about it a lot, so it must be pretty good.

u/aridifolia · 1 pointr/MLPLounge

If some were not so expensive, I'd recommend a plushie. The more durable ones make for great stuffed toys for children to play with.

As others have said, the DVD would be nice. It is cheap and well worth the price (in my opinion of course :D ) The DVD can be bought from Amazon.

Also, if you like reading to her, I'd get the comics. This is something I did for my nephews and nieces. They enjoyed being read to from books and comics, but the MLP would suit your child more. Hopefully, that is.
The comics are not out yet, but they may be by the time her birthday comes around. You can pre-order them here.

I hope this helps!

4DE is the 4th Dimension Entertainment Twilight. She's the first plush I bought. BaBW is Build a Bear Workshop. She looks a bit strange but she's super soft and I got her on the recommendation of a friend who loves his BaBW Fluttershy.

The nightmare Rarity story is Volume 2 (Issues 5-8) also available digitally on comixology.

EDIT: I would avoid the kindle edition, since only comixology has guided view. If you want to see how much it improves the reading experience just get one of their free books and try it out.

Actually, you should just get them all, because the free books change from time to time, but if you've already added it to your account you still keep it. Issue #1 of MLP was actually free for like 2 weeks earlier this year.

Aha, the reason I ask is because I wrote a non-violent RPG for kids and small girls who like horses and drawing really like it. So, I thought you might be interested in it. It includes pre-made character sheets for children who are too young to deal with the math of creating a character.

Here it is in case you're interested.

I will take every opportunity to plug BlackRoseRaven's 99 Worlds Saga.

It is Long. You think 300k words is long? You haven't seen anything yet.

The total length of The 99 Worlds Saga is 4.5 million 5.3 million words. It takes ponies and throws them through the gauntlet of Norse Mythos. A dangerous cult, an Ice Giant, Norns, Jormungandr and so much more..

But first, it starts When Scrivy Met Twilight, and then moves on to the main plot with Moonrise. After Moonrise, there's a short break for Six Broken Ponies to introduce the mane six and some side plots. Then we continue onward with Lunar Lights(After Ch. 11, read Guys' Night Out) and Starlit Knights(Huge fight scenes in this one iirc). Thus concludes The Fimbulvetr Trilogy.

Next are Metempsychosis and Because Love Conquers All, with Decretum to finish up the Iðavöll Trilogy. Creation, an Alternate Ending, and a Hunting.

The last five are where things start to get big. But first, they start small again, with The Long, Dark Tunnel. We immediately get back into the swing of things with Absolution(Which is actually preceded by the short story Condensation). Synthesis Of The Athiest is where we start to hear the whispers of The Biggest Bad of the entire Saga, brought to you by an old friend. The Hermit's Tale is told via a number of recordings chronicling the trials of the Administrator of Valhalla. The big finale, Glory Be, is a monster of a story in its own right, weighing in at just over a million words.

Here's the reading order for the main series of stories they've written, with a few of the relevant side-stories included chronologically(And word counts, yay numbers!).

When Scrivy Met Twilight - 15,587
Moonrise - 76,969
Six Broken Ponies - 52,734

Because Love Conquers All - 490,450
Decretum - 764,269
The Long, Dark Tunnel - 76,257

Well, my usual outfit involves a black t-shirt, black cargo pants, black socks, black leather boots, and a black cap (the kind with a round panel for the top instead of big wedges). The cap also has one of these attached to it.

Also my watch (a cheap $11 Casio with a black nylon replacement band added after the original (plastic? rubber?) band broke) and a couple chainmail bracelets (the rubber rings are black and the annodized aluminum rings cycle through a repeating pattern of blue/blue/blue/green

If I get cold I can also throw on a black hoodie. :-P

I bought this book a while back. I didn't like it because of the reasons I posted in my review, but it is a decent sized book and sounds like something you could use.

$2+shipping. Does that sound fair? I'll ship by Canada Post, with or without tracking.

Mechanical keyboard guide. The Unicomp customizer is by far the most popular new mechanical keyboard. It's identical to the original IBM model M which you can buy on ebay. Both of these use a buckling spring keyswitch.

I prefer cherry brown switches and use a filco majestouch and kinesis contoured.

iPad Mini

Don't be put off by the headphone price, the sound quality is better than my sisters $130 Sennheiser headphones. Bigger frequency range.

I don't recommend the iPad Mini though. Screen flexes and half a gig of ram.

You can totes get the 4DE Twilight Sparkle on Amazon, but they're almost out!

I already ordered mine. :D

The Omnibus collections are a good compromise. I have the digital ones but have gotten the paper ones, too.

My Trixie plushy, my Game of Thrones goat horn cup and the MLP:FiM Omnibus comic, volume 1.

Edit: also my hand-made Trixie blanket, but that's too much effort to get a proper picture of it.
