I second the vote for Cartographies of time.

I might add a couple different options:
A book on Minard's hyper famous graph on Napoleon's invasion of Russia
https://www.amazon.com/Mapping-Time-Illustrated-Napoleons-Campaign/dp/158948312X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1481581204&sr=1-1&keywords=minard

"the measure of all things" on how the metre was established

and "longitude" a must read for the aficionado

If you want to be more original, get her a sextant replica

or maybe go to etsy and grab a laser cut wood map of her state/country

map people, we're easy.

You get book stands to display such things, on a dresser or shelf or whatever. Pick a cool archipelago or some such, and watch the attention it gets. People (including yourself) will also want to flick through book all the time if you display it this way.

Something like this

Or you could make one yourself.

Don't cut them up :( You'll thank me in years to come.

Also worth reading if you're interested in more history of cable laying: [A Thread Across the Ocean] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0060524464).

No problem! I've never handled these maps, but they're among Amazon's top selling maps, and for $30 you get world and US, laminated. If you're ever in need of a 'nice' or gigantic map please reach out to us!

I have these two and like them.

https://www.amazon.ca/Floating-Rotating-Magnetic-Levitation-Platform/dp/B01M0GO582

No globe will be 100% accurate, half the fun is examining them to find their date of production and bias looking at how conflict zones are/were displayed like Sudan, Kashmir, Crimea, Palestine, etc.

GB Eye World Map Poster on Amazon.com - I bought this. Font size is small so you may find you need a pocket magnifying glass as well.

How much detail do you need? I find a Michelin title no. 970 ("Europe," 1:3 million) is plenty detailed for itinerary planning. I use a Thomas Cook or East View rail map for planning train trips. For driving, I find an atlas more convenient, covering most of Europe at the same scale. The German auto club ADAC published a nice one, but so do Collins or AA (1:900,000 with English legends) or Michelin, or Marco Polo.

Here's one. Search for "satellite view globe" and there seem to be a couple similar to that one.

*edit: just realized this is teeny, so maybe not what you wanted.
