I love the Pro Controller, but I have heard people complain about the D-Pad. I have never had an issue with mine, but I have not played a lot D-Pad intensive games with it.
I have heard good things about the Power A controllers (both the gamecube style and the pro controller style) but I haven't used them myself. The wired ones can be found for around $25 and the wireless for $40 so they might be a good choice as a second controller if you don't want to spend too much.
I own this Gamecube adapter that lets you connect both GCN and has a Wii Classic Controller socket, which means you can connect the controllers from the mini consoles to the Switch - which I plan to do to play SMM2 levels.
I'm also considering this 8 bit do adapter that lets you connect PS4, Xbox and Wii U Pro controllers to switch, since I really like the WIi U Pro and it's just gathering dust at home.
Not OP, but this one has worked out great for me so far. I've made a few levels and it's been perfect and very precise.

Yeah I have the same problem with going down. It’s not horrible, but it happens enough to where I would buy something else to try. I wish I could find a SNES style controller with the dpad that’s in the dpad joycon you can buy( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AJRN4CE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_X-4BDb8B8038A ). That’s the best feeling dpad I have ever used.
Just use a stylus and a glass screen protector. No smudges and feels amazing. If you are going to get a stylus may I recommend

I bought these. Durable and comfortable. The tip is a bit odd but it works really well on the switch and any other device with a touch screen.
