I just got a queen Zinus "Green Tea" memory foam bed. Currently $289 shipped on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI/

It is pretty firm. I actually ordered a 3" gel topper because of the firmness (you sleep on top rather than sinking into it), but that proved to be too squishy (the topper leaves an imprint of your body when you roll). I have a 2" topper on another bed & imo that is the right level of squish vs. firmness: (the bed is firm to the point where my side wasn't sinking in & was kind of being compressed instead, like when you lay on thin carpet when watching TV or something)

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-Memory-Topper-Queen/dp/B00FJNQBJ2/

Also, I picked up their awesome 18" tall frame:

https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-SmartBase-Foundation-Replacement-Noise-Free/dp/B017YETH8K/

TONS of storage space underneath, easy to setup (2 pieces that screw together & fold in half, lightweight & only requires one person to assemble...literally takes more time to unbox it than put it together), no noise in use, plus with the 12" Zinus bed, it's at a good height to walk up to & fall into bed. You will need a grip sheet underneath, otherwise the bed will slide off pretty easily:

https://www.amazon.com/TRU-Lite-Bedding-Slip-Mattress/dp/B01AS3HADS

I also recommend getting a waterproof sheet (goes underneath the regular sheets), as any spills will sink directly into the foam mattress & never, ever come out:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2G9VFM/

I got these Mellanni sheets - they are thin, but feel nice:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NLNDU00

Slightly better than the Amazon Basics sheets I have on another bed. I have a plastic bin underneath the bed for storing a spare set of sheets & waterproof sheet (both are washer/dryer-safe). Total comes up to under $600 shipped for a 12" memory foam bed, 2" gel topper, 18" metal bed frame, a non-skid pad for the frame, two sets of sheets, and two waterproof mattress sheets. I was going to get a Casper or Leesa, but those were like $800 just for the bed...I got all that for $200 less, still a pretty hefty investment, but a decent deal. Other than that, you just need some pillows & a duvet or blanket on the top.

The mattress comes vacuum-sealed in a box, so you just undo it from the packaging & let it air out for a day or two to fully decompress. The frame comes in a large but thin box (two frames folded in half with some assembly hardware). I didn't have to mooch a truck off a friend or go to a mattress store or anything...ordered it all off Amazon Prime, showed up in a couple days, put it all together by myself in minutes. Easy peasy. Would definitely order another one!

I have something similar (but I don't have a latex mattress, yet). So, here's my 2-cents, for what it's worth.

The mattress protector that I have is here:
https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Philosophy-Natural-Cotton-Mattress/dp/B011KYOYN8

It's a similar product, but not organic (and thus, much cheaper). I think that mine might have a little less fill as well, judging by the weights.

1 - I have a memory foam topper, and was hoping this would help with the heat retention, but it doesn't seem to. My bed still gets too warm for me, and the protector holds heat just fine (if I get up in the middle of the night, then come back to bed... the top of the mattress is often still warm where I was sleeping). This might not be a concern for you.

2 - When washing, I worry a little bit about whether or not the cotton stuffing is drying enough. Sometimes, when I put it back on the bed, it seems like there are dark spots inside (where I can't get to them to check them out) - and I wonder/worry that it might be mold. I don't think it is, but when I upgrade my mattress, I'll be changing out the mattress protector as well.

3 - Mine is not stretchy. From what I've read, something with some stretch is better over latex. I'm assuming that this one is also not stretchy - so you might, possibly, lose a little bit of the latex feeling. For example, where the latex itself might be a bit more flexible, this could stop you from sinking in as much as you would otherwise. To be fair, I don't know how much this matters. If you're using non-stretchy sheets, I'd imagine they'd do the same thing, so the mattress cover may be immaterial at that point.

I've actually bought my replacement mattress cover and have it ready (for that fortuitous day where I finally make a decision and get my new mattress, whenever that might be ;) ) - it's this one from Cozy Pure:
https://www.cozypure.com/mattress-pads-toppers/organic-cotton-matelasse-knit-mattress-protector--best-seller

It's actually cheaper (at least right now, I'm not sure if that sale is ongoing?) and also organic. It's a thick, stretchy cotton... sort of like sweatshirt material, with no stuffing. I'm sure there must be others out there that are similar.

Good luck with your decision! BTW which bed do you have? How do you like it? Thanks!

A friend really likes this. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-by-Zinus-12-Theratouch-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/6538605?selected=true never remove the cover for zinus. This one looks nice off Amazon. Vibe 12-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress | Bed in a Box, [Mattress Only], Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NDQ143/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-pjzDb12NEPSZ you could go to mattress stores and see what you like. See if you like memory foam. There are a few hybrids on amazn. I'm not going to say the ones above will last for years but anything like that can get you by for some time could be a good option.

Edit:to be honest there are so many options on Amazon. I prefer cooling memory foam. Just listed one that looked good but there are tons.

I have the Avocado which looks like virtually the identical specs. It is a firm mattress! I’ve tried the 2” 14-19 ILD Avocado topper in their showroom and I just sink down all the way through it @ 160lbs. I have a 3” 24 ILD Dunlop topper on my Avocado currently and it supports me well. So I would recommend 3” if that’s an option. I’m still on the fence about going softer. I would probably try an ultra soft 3” latex topper from Mayers Bedding next. Also, I have this memory foam topper bookmarked as an super-duper-ultra soft option. The YouTube review I saw said it takes 3 full points off the firmness of a mattress. Just something to keep in mind if you want to aggressively knock down the firmness of the mattress. I’m saving it as my “nuclear option” 🙂.

awesome thank you so much, leaning towards that one now. they have a latex version i think too its $40 more https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076H5HYHX/ref=twister_B07RD875L9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 but going probably with regular one. i won't have to worry so much about heat and dent and sinking with their regular one. thanks for the advice!

You have a couple of options, but as morgf said, you should probably try them out if you can before getting them to see which one feels better to you.

A couple of options:
Latex: http://www.mattresses.net/latex-mattress-topper-latex-core.html

Memory Foam: https://www.amazon.com/ViscoSoft-Density-3-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B00XKJKKGW

Latex will last more, but at the same time is more expensive. It really depends on what makes you feel better. I would suggest to go on a 3" topper instead of a 2" topper, it will give you probably that softer/plush feeling you are looking for. On the latex one, you should get the soft version mattresses.net offer. http://www.mattresses.net/queen-3-inch-natural-talalay-latex-mattress-topper.html

verrry interesting.

Yea, I kinda got that impression after seeing the wildly varying fakespot ratings.

That's why I decided to ask real people.

Anyway, I ended up going with this combo:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TNX23F9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MY3154J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N4K5591/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

btw ive been using the same hand-me-down full spring mattress for 5+ years. I sleep like garbage so I am hoping this will help.

The bed frame in bassett is customized -- here's the link -- and it looks like it will have its own wood base (so I probably need to unscrew the stands) if I buy this https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Brands-Adjustable-Comfort-Wireless/dp/B01MEG3AB0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523760712&sr=8-3&keywords=adjustable+base+king&dpID=31cIRfG-4CL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Below it the initial one (queen -- but its fully customizable)

Not sure what S&F is but I dont think we have it here in the tri-state area.

I have considered Tempur really hard but from the looks of it -- $3500 will not be enough.

I dunno really -- this Stern and Foster is really tempting but the reviews I read about it regarding sagging is scary. Yes, it will be great .. but it breaks easily // usually right after the warranty ends which is not acceptable in my opinion.

That's a hard price. The cheapest that I can find that is better than what you have is the allswell, which is 315 for a full.

For a good mattress topper, sleep on latex sells a 2 inch full size medium firmness topper for 159 dollars on amazon.

Thanks for your reply. I guess what I am getting at is if there is a difference between wooden slats which are typically found in platform beds and metal frames which are found in foundations? (assuming the slats are up to standard)

Here's an example:

I could do a platform with wooden slats: https://www.zinus.com/collections/platform-beds/products/marissa-deluxe-wooden-platform-bed-frame-antique-espresso

A metal frame foundation: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VMHONDU/ref=psdc_3733071_t2_B07C9C5YYN

Or even a wooden slat foundation: https://ironwoodbedframesandmattress.com/home/upholstered-kd-foundation-with-legs/knock-down-slatted-foundation-with-legs/

I appreciate your input. Complete novice here..
