I've been playing Halo recently & although it's not in that same mecha genre, he does wear an armored-type suit. Why the game developers didn't have him exchange the suit for something like a mecha once he got on ground somewhere, I don't know, but it would have been awesome to game within something like that.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Drake's Hammer's Slammers, and again it's not mecha, but military. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer's_Slammers
I would second the Haldeman's Forever War recommendation. Great book.
Something like Mecha Corps might interest you. I have not read it.

Hey guys, my name is Wes. like most of us, I have had a passion for anything with Kaiju, mecha, and anime since I can remember. A few months ago I finally decided to put these passions towards something that I hope will do them justice. That’s why I wrote The Kaiju Survival Guide. This guide takes a realistic look at how to survive a Kaiju attack. It is full of details such as what Kaiju eat or even what would actually happen if a giant robot and Kaiju fought each other. The guide also includes survivor stories from some of the most devastating attacks in history. This is my first book, with many other Kaiju based ones on the way. I hope you guys enjoy it and if you want to talk to me about anything Kaiju or mecha related, you can either message me on here or follow me on twitter @mechawes for updates on the other books being released this year.

Honestly, you're not missing too much. While it is fascinating to see the origins of super robot anime, it's poorly scripted, it drags HARD through most of it, and it's mostly just monster-of-the-week with very few episodes ever advancing the overall plot. There's probably a way to condense the series down to 15-20 episodes without skipping anything of note.
That being said, Mazinger Z is licensed in the US by Discotek Media, and not (legally) available for streaming. You are unlikely to find it used for cheaper than $80 for both box sets together.

When you are getting free ebooks from Amazon do not use the “Read for Free” button - you should use “Buy Now” while the kindle price is $0.00. “Read for Free” is Kindle Unlimited which you have to pay for.
I also remember Mickey Mouse and friends getting their own combining mecha, which you can view here.
Yeah, Vol 2 came out a few years ago. Its out of stock on Amazon Maybe its out of print?
