I didn't buy a particular set of paints, just what I had around already and some I bought piecemeal off of Amazon. That said, DecoArt Americana is a good brand to use.
And yes, I did a base coat first (red, yellow, green, and blue) then painted on top. Its not necessary (I was able to paint one without) but it definitely saves time.

After finding no hobby store with paint near me, I finally pulled the trigger on $22 red spray primer, $39 paint set, and $14 brushes on Amazon. Thankful that this game is so cheap at $75 because the paints really kicked it up!
