33. Squirrel Buster Finch Squirrel-proof Bird Feeder w/4 Metal Perches & 8 Feeding Ports, 2.4-pound Thistle/Nyjer Seed Capacity

    Features:
  • Worth its weight in Gold(finches)!
  • TRULY SQUIRREL-PROOF: Openings in the shroud align with the feeding ports, providing birds access to the food. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing access to the ports. Squirrels and some large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
  • PAYS FOR ITSELF IN SAVED SEED: Squirrels can no longer steal your wild bird seed. Over a short period of time this adds up to substantial savings that will pay for the purchase of your feeder.
  • RECOMMENDED BIRD FOOD: Nyjer only.
  • LIFETIME CARE: This is how we support you and our planet. Should you need a part covered under our warranty, we will provide it for free to extend the life of our products, and shipping is on us. The future of the planet must be linked to the vision of products made to last. Please call us for advice or help, a real person will be happy to answer.
  • FOR BOTH PERCHING & CLINGING BIRDS: The seed ports have perches for perching birds and the wire shroud provides a surface area for clinging birds. This increases your bird traffic.
  • CHEW PROOF: All feeder parts exposed to squirrels are made with chew proof materials.
  • DETACHABLE COMPONENT SYSTEM: designed to be dismantled by hand into individual components without the use of tools. This allows for easy cleaning and maintenance.
  • SEED TUBE VENTILATION: Transparent seed tubes trap solar energy. Conventional seed tube designs block the escape of the heated air. Our patented Seed Tube Ventilation permits humidity and hot air to escape through vents at the top of the feeder and replaces it with fresh air. Bird food remains fresher, attracting more wild birds.
  • UV RESISTANT: All components are UV resistant.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent podcasts if you want additional info. They also explore connection to North Fox Island and all the horrific things happening there.

Get a brass blade ice scraper. And don't ever curse our state like that again. It's not Michigan's fault that it exists where it does

>>EDIT: I'm thinking about this bad boy and ditching the single stage. Eventually I'll get a two stage as everybody seems to love them.

No - THIS is what you want!
I shovel my entire driveway in about 1/4 the time someone could do it with a snow blower.

I just found out about this a couple of weeks ago while reading Bill Bryson's new book One Summer: America 1927.

It really stood out to me because the media (at least the little I expose myself to) seems to make incidents like this seem like some new societal development. It was interesting to read about an it happening before many of the things the blame as causes were around.

Ninja edit: If you're wondering about the book, I recommend it. It was a really interesting read. Not Bryson's best work in my opinion, but I hold some of his other writing in very high regard.

I have THIS FIELD GUIDE. It's useful as long as the trees have leaves on them.

this has a lot of good info.

You can always use something like this.

My brother bought me something like that as a BBQ fire starter. Might have to try that as an ice melter.

Buddy at work has this one on his car. I call it an acceptable exception.

Squirrels and chipmunks will eat everything if they can reach it. If you put birdseed on or near the ground you will be feeding squirrels and not birds. You need a tall pole with at least double hook and a squirrel baffle, like this. Google "bird feeder pole squirrel baffle" for other ideas.

Black oil sunflower is a great all purpose seed that attracts several different types of birds. I always keep at least two feeders filled with just sunflower seed. I also have: a mix with safflower and peanuts; Nyger thistle; and suet cakes.

I put the feeder poles in my yard close enough to some overhanging branches and bushes that the birds can use them for perching and cover but far enough away so that those goddamn squirrels can't jump from the branches onto my feeders. The baffles keep them from climbing up the poles. I also got one of these. It really works. (Brome Squirrel Buster.)

A word of caution: once you start down this dark path, these may be no hope for you. Next thing you know you have eight feeders in your yard, you are buying sunflower in 50 pound bags, and you have five 40-gallon metal cans in your garage for seed storage (because rodent pests can and will chew through anything to get into seed).

I like the UP-only version and might have to get that. I also need a wall mount bottle opener for my camp. Or I guess six. Actually I think that works: kitchen, sitting room, two bedrooms, porch, fire pit.
