I use Sony noise cancelling headphones, they are pushing your budget at just over $250, but you can often find sales. I did have a couple of cheaper pairs before I spent the extra money, and the difference is astounding.

For me, they have been one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Earplugs, I use these : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K2T3XRX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_rjt2Db641PWEY

But lots of choices, and I haven't found that spending up for more expensive versions to be worth it.

Putting one in when in a restaurant with lots of ambient sound makes a world of difference.

My last advice is to just keep in mind social situations with noise or lots of cross talk will be both difficult and tiring for your husband. The amount of concentration is takes to listen when there is more than one thing going on has really surprised me, and it can be exhausting and overwhelming. I have some friends and family who have been very considerate in changing venues if a restaurant is extra noisy, and make an effort to seat me so my good ear is facing most of the table. Those things are very much appreciated.

Good luck to you both.

Yes, I can differentiate left from right origin sounds via stereo using my headphones in a game - I place the left speaker driver up and the right speaker driver down and I can hear the origin of left or right as up or down. If I hear the sound from the up speaker I know the sound in the game came from the left side, etc.

I had to so some additional simple mods to make my headphone have a microphone. I don't make or sell the following but this is how I adopted my 2E1 headphones for gaming and also to use with my smartphone when I am commuting to work on the NYC subway (I did not buy these just similar ones so these are for examples only):

To add a microphone for gaming first I split the signal that I plug into the wireless joystick controller 3.5mm jack:

https://www.amazon.com/Headset-Adapter-Converter-PlayStation-Talkback/dp/B01BDOPVVE

Then attached a mic:

And for my smartphone to convert my portable 2E1 headphones that I make that can fold I use a bluetooth converter something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/APEKX-Bluetooth-Headphones-Wireless-Hands-Free/dp/B01MUXYVOA/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1534908390&sr=1-10&keywords=bluetooth+headphone+converter

I did my headphone project because I hated how music sounded in mono - it sounded flat to me is the best way I can describe it. Only later did I realize - let me see if I can game with this and I could! But I primarily did it to hear music in stereo again with my one ear. I do sell my headphones on ebay but I am OK with anyone from the single-side deaf community to copy of my design and make it on their own - if you can't because of lack of tools or time, etc I am happy to make it for you.

i have these 3 things too, it's pretty awful so i'm really glad he has someone to help.

bose "hearphones" are unfortunately not in your price range, but maybe you could budget for them down the road? i literally just got a pair about 2 weeks ago, and they are proving invaluable in loud settings like restaurants.

the other thing that makes my life more pleasant are disposable foam ear plugs. i buy them by the hundreds and keep them in various canisters like these when i leave the house.

I bought a pair of AfterShokz bone conduction headphones. They work great. I use them like I would any headphones. They also have a mic so you can talk on the phone or on the computer if you play games. Here's a link to the one I got. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018GAKVK4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've had a few of those scansound 1-Bud earbuds. They're not bad, especially for the price. (I tried upgrading to the 1-Bud Pro Gold and didn't notice much difference fwiw.)

However, recently I gambled on a similar but different single bud from Sharktooth and found the sound and quality both to be much better.

I still use the sport 1-Bud for running. I've gone through 7-8 of them (they wear out quickly), but I've tried other sport models and don't like them as much.

I forgot to as my Audiologist how long the batteries last. Also, is there a brand you recommend? I see this one is $15 and has a total of 60
