Hey there! Fellow ex-circle pad pro user. I upgraded to the new 3DS XL from my 3DS XL when it dropped here in NA.
To answer your questions:
>how do you think it compares to the new systems' nubs?
To be brutally honest here, I find the CPP way more responsive compared to the system nub. have really huge hands and found that the nub was a bit tad too small for my taste. But it was still usable and definitely capable of handling the camera changes I needed.
> Which do you find more comfortable?
CPP for sure
> Do you think the nicer screen and better load times are worth the upgrade?
I can tell you right now that the increased performance from the more powerful console is a huge benefit and makes the gameplay and everything much, much smoother. I actually perform way better in hunts because of the higher frame rate. In short - yes it was worth the upgrade. You can always buy a controller grip to ease the lost of the CPP extension (if you're like me and had a more comfortable grip using the CPP). I used this grip for my new 3DS XL and it's wonderful. EDIT: Forgot to mention that the added ZL and ZR buttons for hunter arts are a huge plus as well.

The cyber gadget one is great. The original Hori X one is pretty cool too, and I have used both (my friend got it when first released, and far less expensive).
This one has a very comfortable rubber finish, and fits big hands well. It’s keeps your wrists pointed out at more of a 45 degree angle than the Hori one does, and helps prevent scratching your system (my poor regular 3DS XL got ABUSED by the circle pad pro). Also, features a pocket to hold two cartridges, or use to hold up the system! Very comfy, seats the system well, is excellent and what I use and love.
Drawbacks- no buttons as part of the grip. There are ridges on the back that take getting used to, but still, I said this is a comfy grip. You basically just put your middle fingers across these lower grips. I would LOVE if it had L/R/ZL/ZR buttons, but simply gives you access to comfy access to the actual buttons on the system. This is definitely where the Hori one does better, by providing big triggers on the grip, but this definitely works.

As someone who just recently bought a grip, specifically for playing 4U, this is the one to go with, and is cost efficient and of great quality
https://www.amazon.com/Circle-Pad-Pro-Nintendo-Accessory-Included/dp/B009LGO88E
Not sure where you're located if Amazon/Gamestop/Ebay are good choices for you? I've found that using the lock on/button to center on the monster is immensely helpful, both for making sure I know where it is and for maintaining the critical distance.
I think practice is really the best thing! Sometimes I've taken quite a long time to take down a monster simply because I took time to watch its moves and dodged around until I felt comfortable with its attacks. I picked up adept style for a few fights because the dodge is much more forgiving once you know where to dodge (With a great free charge rank up/power shot!).
If you're having trouble with the weapon itself there are really great videos up on youtube and guides online (and here) for different approaches. Again, it really depends on your playstyle. At a glance and a quick search, this page seemed helpful! http://laxgg.blogspot.com/p/mhgen-bow-mechanics.html
It also might help to have a protection/healer palico that has taunt and some heals for you if you're struggling with item management or aggro from the monster. As someone that plays LS offline and LBG/bow online, sometimes its harder when you don't have other hunters keeping it busy lol. You do have a pretty large chunk of time to complete your hunts so don't feel rushed that you can't watch the monster.
Do you know why at one point MonHun swapped to the 3DS?
Let me tell you the success that was PSP and what it did for MonHun players, the PSP allow the Japanese and their population density boost the spread and gossip about MonHun
Do you know why hunts are limited to 50 minutes, and a party of 4 and been that why for a long time? Its because Japan literally bumps shoulders constantly and see each other so much they just whip out the PSP and play.
3DS comes in for 3G, 4, 4G, X, XX. Why the 3DS? Why not a powerful machine like a PC? Because Japan knows, no one fucking sits at home to enjoy MonHun that isn't a gaijin like us. (And if they did they all live in condo-complexes and are basically next door neighbors.)
They play that shit on the train, on the bus, during breaks at school and work, during after school, commuting back from work, etc. They basically live and breathe MonHun (not all of them but when they don't have like Pokemon or Final Fantasy, you mingle with MonHun)
Bringing your counter argument, I want to ask you "where is the Bonfire, in Monhun?" a legit Sword stuck in a burn pile of cinders where the player may or may not have to light it?
It doesn't do that, not even in Worlds. And both are Japanese Games.
You have legit Figmas Bandai Action Figures Figures for a well cemented franchise.
And then you DS players finally get an Amiibo for Solaire and you get the hype when MonHun players do.
There is no Fanboying, because if anyone is louder, it is the DS players trying their best to be heard in a crowd they don't own. Other Games reference DS, but there were games that did that for MonHun
MonHun is a legit king of a franchise, its only when it leaves a console can other franchises stand a chance.
Like Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Final Fantasy Explorers, Toukiden, God Eater, Dauntless, Rurikhan
And they don't use "MonHun-like" to subscribe the game, they tell you, its a clone.
Horizon Zero Dawn, at one point was the "next best thing Monster Hunter", breaking Robotic parts, Harvesting, upgrading gear, etc.
If you get a cpp get this one
https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C
Looks weird but I PROMISE the left index circle pad is the best way to play. It takes a typically low use finger (for MH) and gives it something to do, freeing up a high use finger (right thumb) to focus only of face buttons. It is the best way to play monster hunter by far.
Personally, an N3DSXL with a Version 2 Cyber Grip is the best thing I've ever done. I still have my original 3DSXL with CPP from before I got the New 3DSXL, but it was quite a stretch for my small hands to go from the extra circle pad to the ABXY buttons. It made longer hunts kind of difficult as I was straining to reach so fatigue and wrist pain would set in. It was still much better than the stock 3DSXL, both original and new (in my opinion) are way too thin to play without something on it to bulk it up.
The grip I linked gives more of a relaxed controller style grip, and the V2 has the finger rests (trigger type) set lower on the grip so it's much easier to reach the shoulder buttons on the 3DS. V1 has the trigger rests much closer to the top as you can see in pics here for the V1 which will cause you to alter your grip and choke up higher on it instead of gripping it where you naturally want to. You can also store 2 physical game cards in the door on the back of the grip. Perfect if someone wants to keep two other games handy, liiiiiiike 3U and 4U while MHGen is in the unit once it's released!
The only drawback on the V2 is that the unit is easier to tip back if you set it down on a table. You can't leave the unit open without having it flop backwards onto the release clip. Don't leave the unit at the edge of the table with the triggers on the edge side in case you bump your unit, you don't want it to fall. Other than that small issue, it's the best grip I've ever had!
Just FYI, a PSP joystick fits perfectly on the New 3DS XL. Just yoink the C-nub out with the tip of a knife or with pliers and stick it on there. This is the exact one I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010H8223M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bsBuDbWKVTYAP
It looks great and works like absolute magic. Here's what it looks like on my 3DS: https://i.imgur.com/Qpp7T6j.jpg
And then you can get this case: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZBBuDbZ6BNP2H
Makes it feel like you're holding an xbox controller it's so comfortable. With these two modifications I can hunt for hours straight without the slightest bit of discomfort.
And about MH: Stories, it's just such a nice game. It's unusual to find a game just so bright and happy, and the Pokèmon gameplay is really good IMO and the animations are insane - But it still is Pokémon gameplay, so if you don't like turn-based stuff it's not for you.
I got a grip off of Amazon for like less that 30 bucks. I'm not sure what the company name is but it has very obvious red Japanese writing all over the front of it, just search new 3DS XL grip and it should pop up. I have had about 3 different grips for my DS and this one is by a far margin the absolute best. It removes easily, it allows access to your game slot and stylus, it has false triggers to make holding it very comfortable, the smooth surface is clean and doesn't "gunk up" and is also easily cleaned if it does get dirty. I highly suggest this grip when available. I would try and get a link but I am out to sea (Navy) right now and I cannot get one..
edit: got it http://www.amazon.com/Gadget-Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1457184131&sr=1-1&keywords=new+3DS+XL+grip
These are the ones that I bought a few months back.
Cyber ・Premium Slide Pad Cover New 3ds / New 3ds Ll / 3ds Ll /3ds Clear Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UURTXK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_7do1wbDSGA0CN
The ones you linked were slightly more expensive than the ones I bought, so I avoided them. Ergo, I can't vouch for them :/. The ones I linked are pretty good though! Definitely an improvement, although the thumb slips will still happen after an hour or two of play. I highly recommend keeping some sort of small towel on standby just to wipe off the sticks and your hands in between hunts.
I've tried two at this point. My first was the standard hard plastic shell a lot of other folks have linked. My second was this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UJ9LB6Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's a lot like the wii-mote condoms but is a little more sturdy. It's actually pretty great and I find it comfortable.
Would like to tag on to this to say buying a controller grip and if you're using a N3DSXL, replacing the nub with a PSP 1000 series stick will hugely increase the quality of play. My brother owns a N2DSXL and made the same changes. If ripping out the nub makes you uncomfortable, videos on YouTube are easy to find. I do not regret it one bit, the psp stick is a full upgrade from the shitty nub.
In 2016 I bought a N3DSXL to exclusively play Pokemon and to enter the MH franchise. I tried MHGEN first and the barrier of the controls, and Gen's assumption that you're already an experienced Hunter made me quit before I even killed a Great Maccao.
Advice online suggested MH4U was a better entry point to the series, and it 100% was for me. That motivated me to find ways to make the handheld more comfortable for my giant fucking sausage fingers.
To me, MH4U legitimately feels like a full sized game stuffed into a handheld system. I still found myself fully immersed, even with 3ds graphics, which really fly below the radar when you're occupied with the technical mechanics that make this series so addicting.
I have personally bought and used these ones, they feel just like a controller and are great for the hands.
I have personally got used to playing without a grip attachment, but generally they are definitely worth it if you get cramps from playing, much more comfortable.
Hoping they simply drop to a better price. When the MH3U themed grips were first being imported, they were around the same high price, but are about $30 now. Those still seem like a good option for original 3DS owners, although I think the CPP is way better.
I personally love my soft grip.
http://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Comfort-GRIP-Protection-your-Nintendo/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I haven't had any problems with it BUT, full disclosure, you have to pull down soft material to change game cartridges and some people have experienced it wearing out due to swapping game cartridges often.
That said, I literally only play MH4U with very short bouts of MH3U and have had it 9 months and it looks and feels brand new still.
Still a great value for $20.
>Sadly much I love 4U my biggest gripe with it... well, can be simply summed by the fact it's on 3DS and the ungodly bad wrist cramps/aches I've get after a while of playing intensive action games on that tiny boxy console.
If you care enough, Buying a 3DS grip like this one pretty much removes the hand cramps you get from playing on the 3DS for long periods of time. I would know because I dealt with the same issue playing Monster Hunter on the 3DS.
They actually come pretty cheap now. (similar price in Europe)
Battery last for about 500 hours, which is pretty neat.
Oh, and it really improves the grip comfort.
I also recommend the PSP replacement. I was also nervous to do it, but it was surprisingly effortless and natural. I bought these caps and they fit in flawlessly like they were designed for it.
Completely agree with this. If you plan to play MH4U at a higher framerate, go for the new 3DS XL, but if you want a better control scheme in terms of camera control with movement and attacking, the original 3DS XL with the hori expansion slide is a great set-up, especially if you are a veteran that's played the PSP version with the claw hold.
Sadly the new 3DS XL is not accessible with this control pad and I don't think it will have one since it has its own control stick.
The link to the control pad is listed below. Though this product is printed in japanese, it is not region locked and can work with any original 3DS XL.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LVRXS8C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the one for the older XL models (don't know if you have an XL, but the extra screen size is really helpful for Monster Hunter too) https://www.amazon.com/Circle-Pad-Pro-Nintendo-Accessory-Included/dp/B009LGO88E
Basically just fits around your 3DS and adds an extra analog stick on the right. There's an option in the 4U settings menu to enable it once you get it. It's a godsend.
I thinkkk this is the one for non-XL models, but you may want to do a little more research and make sure https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-Circle-pad-Replacement/dp/B00T5I2RXQ
I might consider that, I assumed you meant something like this https://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Comfort-GRIP-Protection-your-Nintendo/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y
Looks cool and also pretty useful, so I might get one, thanks!
Yea, thankfully MH is huge over in Japan and Revoltech has cashed in with some very nice figures. Bandai has some pretty crazy ones too, like this Chogokin Rathalos (which also comes in a Silver color) and a Gore Magala girl thing and a Zinogre god thing
While there is no Circle Pad pro, what you can do replace it with a PsP1000 Stick. This stick makes the whole 3DS SO MUCH better. It's a completely different and much easier to use. It's also quite easy to do if you already have a PsP1000 stick.
You can also buy this grip for more comfortable holding.
My mom has this one: http://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Comfort-GRIP-Protection-your-Nintendo/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y
I checked it out one time when visiting her, and it is soft and super comfortable. I keep forgetting to get one for my regular 3DS XL so that hunting can be more enjoyable. I also recall that you can just put the bottom on so that you can still see the design on the 3DS if you have a limited edition one.
I haven't tried any others besides a Nerf case that my mom had that had bumps for your hands, but I really like this one. It feels almost like an actual controller.
Which version of 3ds do you have? If you have an original version of the 3ds or 3ds XL I would suggest the claw pad pro I linked to. It puts an additional Circle pad a little below the L button on the system. Gives you have claw feelings and is way more comfortable at the same time.
I honestly have considered buying an OG 3DS again so I can use it with my American release monster hunter games.Though due to time since release they are getting a bit more spendy.... but it is amazing.
edit: Also could try just the normal Circle Pad Pro. 3DS XL OG 3DS
I have these and I love them, perfect for large hands. Havent had a cramp since I bought them, well over 500 hours of games with them.
https://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Comfort-Grip-your-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B008XHCLFO
For those interested you can get the MH4 pouch from Amazon for $25 bucks. Link
I bought one not too long ago and it's pretty well built, there's enough space to fit the 3ds charger and some foldable headphones with 2 sleeves for the games.
I dislike using the system in handheld mode for extended periods of time. I ordered one of these recently, but I won't have it til the end of the month, it looks like it will fix my biggest issues while holding the system in handheld.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-ultimate-gaming-grip-for-the-nintendo-switch/x/3845905#/

Currently while I'm playing for extended periods of time and it's not docked I use a Pro Controller and have the Switch sit in a stand on my lap on top of a pillow. It works well for me.
I use this stand from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071LQD2Y7/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Had that happen to me as well. Trickier to fix than the circle pad, but still doable. Might I recommend:
The Amazon reviews are rather positive.
Definitely going to look into it, I got so used to the comfort of my circlepad...
Do you have the circle pad pro? It honestly really helps alot, and its pretty cheap, the japan version works with any 3ds
http://www.amazon.com/Circle-Pad-Pro-Nintendo-Accessory-Included/dp/B009LGO88E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426256505&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+control+pad+plus
A few companies make clips for the controller that will fasten the controller to the phone. I'd personally be inclined just to get a PopSocket or a Spigen-style loop, but these clips do seem pretty popular. I don't have any experience with it, but here's the one I saw mentioned most often: https://www.amazon.com/Dainslef-Controller-Smartphone-Microsoft-Steelseries/dp/B01MSX55FM/ref=pd_bxgy_147_2/142-1368326-0277201?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01MSX55FM&pd_rd_r=97f603b5-6395-11e9-8c99-472c1499fd9d&pd_rd_w=apvEX&pd_rd_wg=Fkh4N&pf_rd_p=a2006322-0bc0-4db9-a08e-d168c18ce6f0&pf_rd_r=VB8K4C101QCXCN5GGEAK&psc=1&refRID=VB8K4C101QCXCN5GGEAK
Yeah don't buy it from them.
[Amazon.com English Version] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/192677888X) $36.98 + Free Shipping
Amazon.co.jp Japanese Version (used) $32.37 + $10.50 shipping.
Most of my MH books I've ordered from japan if I can't find a retailer here that is cheaper. Note that not all items from amazon.co.jp will do international shipping, the ones that will are usually listed as "Fufilled by Amazon"
I like both books, I have both English and Japanese versions. Other than the language, this is how the Japanese version comes. The English one is both books combined.
I ordered it from World Impact Japan via Amazon. Here's a link to retailers selling it. I live in the UK, but I'm pretty sure it will be the same thing if you live elsewhere.
I'd also recommend something like this. Makes it so much more comfortable.
As a Huge MonsterHunter Fan who put in over 460 hours into MH4U, I bought this grip set (when I had logged around 160 hours) and it worked fine for me. It does not Feel like handles but does make it feel a little more like a controller. I hated it the first day but now I love it and never play without using it. You might be able to find better options, but this will do the job. (Note this is for the 3ds XL)
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Crystal-Case-Nintendo-3DS-XL/dp/B00TKVWVOS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1467832242&sr=8-7&keywords=3ds+grip
I would recommend investing in a circle pad pro. These cannot be used with the N3DS though just fyi.
Here is one for a normal-sized 3DS - Here (no referral link)
Here is one for a 3DS XL - Here
I loved being able to use the zl and zr to move the camera.
For N3DS I just got used to the nipple.
huh? you can, either on amazon or at any saturn/media markt

this is for amazon :) worth every cent too
You didn't say what type of 3DS you have but if its an "old" 3ds then i would suggest:
3DS: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LVRXS2I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
3DS-XL: https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C/ref=s9_simh_gw_g63_i2_r?_encoding=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=W8Z7WXZKR84FYV67WZ3A&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=f58829ef-ff4e-4868-b5c8-fe8c3bd9f769&pf_rd_i=desktop
I use the normal 3DS one myself and I love it, takes a bit of getting used to but I cant play without it now.
It's a Cyber Gadget grip, imported from Japan. It is SO comfortable. This is the original version (the newer version has shorter grip handles).
https://www.amazon.com/Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL-Original/dp/B013JDH8J0
Grips are a must for portable Monster Hunter-ing. I have the Satisfye grip for Switch (and just pre-ordered their updated version).
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JDH8J0/
I've been using this one for a bit and it feels pretty comfortable to use. It's also got some hidden game storage on the back of it if that sweetens the deal any.
Its more a soreness in the middle of my palms.
I have the WiiU so if it gives they same ergonomics it should be alright.
Anyone tried dreamGEAR 3ds XL comfort grips?
Link
The silicone seems more appealing in terms of comfort.
While I'd love to have it on the Wii U instead, remember you can use a circle pad pro to give the 3DS dual analogs.
Main downside for me is that it's much harder to see what's happening on the smaller screen. Just got a Wii u a couple weeks ago, and I've improved so much just by having a bigger screen. Will end up with 4U regardless though
I use the Cyber grip (version 2) for my N 3DS XL: https://www.amazon.com/Gadget-Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL/dp/B013JDH8J0
I have large hands, so I also liked the circle pad pro. This feels similar, though of course using the nub instead of the CPP's right analog stick takes some getting used to.
This soft grip was too squishy for me. https://www.amazon.com/dreamGEAR-Comfort-GRIP-Protection-your-Nintendo/dp/B00UJ9LB6Y
It wasn't terrible, but I apparently squeeze very tightly as I play, and my hands squished the cushions into oblivion. I prefer the "push-back" resistance of a harder grip. A frequent complaint in the Amazon reviews is that there isn't a cutout for the cartridge slot, but who needs to play anything other than Monster Hunter anyway?
Yeah, as far as I can tell I bought this exact one and it is EXCELLENT and I can't use my N3DS without it any more. https://www.amazon.com/CYBER-x30FB-x30E9-x30D0-x30FC-New/dp/B00OTEMTD4
It has this rubber-like matte finish and it kinda holds like a PS4 controller. Only complaint is that it doesn't do anything to address the shoulder buttons- they aren't covered by the grip so they're still tiny and don't have enough give for me. But that's a gripe with Nintendo's design, not theirs. For that reason though, I'm thinking of switching to a Hori grip. Those have these chunky shoulder button overlays.
Grips for regular size New 3DSes are kind of hard to find because in the US you can't even buy that console unless it's a special edition (I got the pokemon 20th anniversary bundle with Red and Blue on VC pre-installed). So of course the one I have is from Japan, but still sold on Amazon's US storefront. Came in a cool looking Japanese mail bubble-envelope.
Do you mean outside of the official ones? There's quite a few of them on Amazon for around $30, with prime shipping. My personal favorite is the Zinogre! Well, if I had the money to actually buy it, that is.

It works great!
Bought,
For those interested, the game is still $10 off on amazon

credit to /u/zeromanarmy for pointing that out the other day.
How different is the bow in world compared to 4U?
I played with bow all the way through 4U (and I'm doing it again) and while I'm thinking about getting into bow when I finally play MHW...I think I'm going to have to wait for a special controller similar to the Hori ESP to come out. I can move my character, my camera, and attack at the same time with ease.
I bought mine from amazon and paid $25.50 including shipping. Let me see if I can find the link to the one I bought..
Edit: I can't find the exact buyer I got mine from but this link shows multiple ones for about 25 bucks and free shipping, you just have to pick one.

For regular New 3DS, there's this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTEMTD4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_Jqvryb5YEWMC1
I can't tell you if it's good or not but other people say it's good. Maybe shop around for the same product and you may get it cheaper.
Just a heads up to anyone looking to do this; I purchased
these from Amazon and had to shave the hole a bit to have it less wobbly since it does not sit flush. Some reviews stated that it worked well with theirs while some reported that it wobbled a bit.
I researched further and found a few people state that Insten PSP 1000 sticks do indeed work, but it may not be the case with every 3DS; I have purchased a 3 pack of Insten PSP 1000 sticks, but while I wait for them to arrive I make due with the wobble. TBH, even with a small wobble it is still way better than the nub.
Buy a psp 1000 analog stick cover and replace your C-stick nipple is all I can say. I did it and the system feels entirely different and much easier to use. Here is a link to the ones I bought-https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005IF00ZM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Installing it is literally as easy as using your nail to peel the rubber off the c-stick and then putting this on there instead.
Yes, but you have to import it. Here is a starting point. You may be able to find a better deal.
its just a problem with the 3ds originally not having any "right stick" if nintendo designed the 3ds to have dual circle pads, it would be one of the best gaming experiences
on mine, I use this along with the psp cap mod
https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-gear-Nintendo/dp/B016XCSBC2
Feels good for medium and large hands and makes the shoulders feel like the dual shock 2 r2/l2. though only for New 3ds XL models
*https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Premium-Slide-Cover-Clear-Black/dp/B00UURTXK6/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_63_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SPMB3DE8X9E9NBD7DQ7V
this too
https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C
This is the best. For 3ds xl though
If you get a N3DSXL and a "controller" case the cramps will go away.
This is the best thing ever.
I can confirm Myth's statement, as I own this leather pouch. The 3DSXL takes up about half of the room, leaving room for a couple games in those DS pockets, your charger, and a few other small odds and ends. My MH4U card case fits right in there in addition to the charger. I just wish I could find a pouch large enough to fit my grip, too.
I love using my New 3DS XL, don't think I could use any other 3DS model at this point. Though that's largely due to the fact that I replaced the c-stick with a PSP cap and use this grip.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UJ9LB6Y/ref=od_aui_detailpages01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've ordered this one twice now, it's great
I personally have tried one of these although I've heard it's very hard to get one these days. I only own an old 3DS and I use this all the time and it feels great.
http://www.amazon.com/Gadget-Coating-Nintendo-New-3DS-LL/dp/B013JDH8J0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
That's what I use. Nice soft touch finish and can hold 2 games in the back.
Hands haven't cramped even in the 24 hour straight session I had a few weekends ago.
The MHX one is kinda meh, especially for the cost.
Have a 3dsxl [old model] I use the circle pad pro for mh4u. I like the extra grip as I find the 3dsxl to be a bit of a hand cramp. Still looking forward to getting a n3dsxl tho.
I ordered a circle pad pro from japan fit the old 3dsxl,
Circle Pad Pro - Nintendo 3DS LL Accessory (3DS LL Console Not Included) Japan Inport https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009LGO88E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fB2JybEN32HH9
Works fine in my US 3dsxl. Uses 1 AAA battery, haven't had to change it much yet.
There's also a regular 3ds version if you go that route.
Something to add is that a lot of games get a load time decrease with the new 3ds (and xl) models. Usually a few seconds but kinda more noticeable in newer games.
I ordered this one
Looked more comfortable than the dreamgear.
But it's going to take forever to ship.
Does he mean the screen or the device itself? He should try the hand grips if it's the latter. I have logged over 300 hours with this one and it has helped tremendously.
L targeting is all you really need in most situations and its faster than panning the camera to the monster anyways. The c stick can be used for more fine adjustments but I hardly use mine in most fights. However there is an option to buy a Circle pad pro extension that you can use to control the camera. I used one for MH3U before I got my new 3ds and it works great!
This is what I use for my N3DS (not XL). I've enjoyed it so far.

3ds/2ds are currently on sale at this site
I have a classic 3DS XL but I use the japanese MH4G LL CPP with it. It was cheaper back when they were released but I use it constantly since it makes the 3DS like a normal controller.
I got one of these. It's a CPP made by Hori that moves the second pad to your left pointer finger. It's similar to the claw, but I like this even better.
If you get Tri, be sure to have a wii pro controller. Otherwise you're stuck with awkward wiimote+nunchuk controls.
Also, keep in mind that Tri no longer has online functionality. The only multiplayer for it is the monster arena hunts which are designed to be more challenging than a normal hunt of the same monster. Unfortunately as well, half the game's content (High Rank) was entirely behind the multiplayer mode.
4 Ultimate has one of the better tutorials, plus you could do coop if you grabbed another copy+3ds. But the handheld versions can be awkward to use as well. Consider getting a circle pad pro if you don't have the terribly named "new" 3ds. Otherwise camera control is on the same thumb as character movement.
They exist already as officially licensed ones. Nargacuga, Zinogre, and More
I'd tread carefully if I were you, though I do wish they had more species.
Got it from here my friend, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UURTXK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_r.3CzbGM9DX26
Get rid of that nub. It's EXTREMELY worth it. You can also customize your bottom screen so you won't need to have that d-pad there. Here's a link to the cap you would need in case you take my advice
I'm going to assume that it is this that I will want.
Also, is there a place you would recommend to purchase the game or a way to find it on sale?
I haven't seen any grips made for the 2DSXL. My grip makes a huge difference when playing MH.
This is mine HERE
I bought this grip and haven't had any problems since: Cyber Gadget Rubber Coating Grip 2 Black For Nintendo New 3DS LL XL
It also helps me utilize the Z-buttons much more just because of how my fingers naturally fall now.
I just got the MHX Grip. Basically the same thing minus the stand. AMA. I can include pictures!
EDIT: I also own this grip if anyone happens to be interested in my experience with that.
I've got the blue version of this grip.
I highly recommend it. It makes the 3DS so much more comfortable. Before my hands would cramp after a little bit of time but now I can play for hours with no problems.
The only issue I have is that it makes it harder to fit in a pocket for carrying the 3DS around.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LVRXS8C/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr0_1?qid=1426275933&sr=8-1-fkmr0&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=hori+slide+pa
this might work even better for old 3ds or XL
I had a friend who went on about the feel of the 2DS as well, then one day he manned up, got a 3DS and did what the rest of us do: got some grips for it. Suddenly everything he ever said about his 2DS went right out the window. He went with this grip which I actually prefer over my hard grip. Never suffered a hand cramp, even in his crazy 12 hour gaming sprees.
Is there something special about that one or did you not know you can get MHI2 for $36 on amazon?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013JDH8J0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This might help.

wish i know why
i found it on amazon! Considering that the original price is 1,800 yen (US$14~) you'll be paying quite a bit of mark-up though...
I'm using the old 3DS XL grip, but you'll need to carefully cut some holes in the top so it doesn't press the z buttons. Beyond that, I mean, it covers all the main buttons/lights on the body but you don't actually need any of those if all you are doing is playing MH.
look for a store near you: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B009LGO88E/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
also the total cost from Nintendo should be like 28 with avrg 2 week wait.
I had that. I tried 3 grips and this one worked best for me. Life changing, I can play for hours on a plane with no discomfort.
I'd recommend abandoning the CPP for this if if fits your model: https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C
http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00LVRXS2I/
http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00LVRXS8C/
They won't ship these overseas, so you'd have to use a forwarder like Tenso. Play-Asia though....
Amazon recommended this and MHGen together, so...maybe? I haven't bought it yet.
Cyber Gadget Grip
He may be talking about the Hori Slide pad. It puts the second circle pad on the left trigger location. Most likely favored by those who miss the infamous claw grip.

You can solo with any weapon, in my opinion. With the ranged weapons, you have to take more care on how you place your shots since you're working with limited resources (ammo or coatings depending on if you go bowgun or bow,).
If you have the 3DS XL, I recommend the Circle Pad Pro for aiming. I like how it feels so much I haven't considered upgrading to the New 3DS. If you have the older, smaller 3DS I don't know if there's an option for you besides using the touchscreen to move the camera.
Hey guys, thanks for linking the product. It's not like I had to look for it or anything and order my own.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D84DRNC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The Hori Grip is made specifically for monster hunter and is amazing. The second circle pad is on the left side and you control it with your left index finger which takes some getting used to but it allows you to cycle through items, sprint, and move the camera simultaneously which is only possible with that grip.
this thing Literally unplayable without it.
I bought a Japanese one from Amazon, it was cheaper than the English one and it got here faster. The Japanese ones work with English systems so you don't have to worry about that. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009LGO88E/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_eoRZtb1A3KCP9

Just got it the other day, works fine for my xl.
This works just fine with new 3DS XL.
Yeah, that's the thing - I already have the basic 3DS XL and other games for it, so justifying the expense of a newer unit is a little rough. Only other game that would drive me to pick up the new hardware would be a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles, since it's only compatible with the new hardware. I might consider going for a New 2DS XL, seeing as how it's about $50 cheaper, but even then it's a bit of a reach for just two games. I think I'm probably going to pull the trigger (no pun intended) on the Hori grip that's designed for the game and fits my older unit, along with a copy of 4U.
I found it on Amazon.

i would go with NEW 2DS XL, its better to have a grip on the game whether then to awkwardly hold the 3DS XL w/Circle Pad Pro, its giant and annoying. there are grips out there that you can use on the normal 3DS XLs or normal 3DS' that has a built in circle pad on them for ease of camera use.
example: https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525706886&sr=8-2&keywords=monster+hunter+3ds+grip
not to mention that on the new 2ds xl, they have more buttons
My dad and I both use this one, and both find it very satisfactory. I got it the day it came out and have been pleased with it ever since. The one downside is it makes it really hard to carry it around, since it will no longer fit in your pocket :(
I have used both the 2 ds and new 3ds extensively. It is much less crapped but you dont have the extra camera stick ( which i actually dont use.) Has slower loading times, and a smaller battery life. You have to be careful with your screens though probably pick up a protective carrying case to protect the two screens as this is why mine is dead. Your other and probably cheaper option is to buy a the monster hunter controller attachment thing for your existing ds.
This thing here:

/u/ImpatientTurtle /u/eviloneinabox If you've got access to them, I've heard wonders about those cyber grips.
Sadly they aren't available in my country, so I'm using a cheap 5 bucks plastic one which - while not ideal - does the trick fine for me while I wait for the cybergrip to be available or until I find a cheap import.
3DS (CPP) should be found in stores (GameStop?) no problem.
3DSXL (CPP LL) might be harder to find in stores, I got mine online (Japan Import) for $20.
I got this locally from where I live but I saw one from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452958910&sr=8-1&keywords=monster+hunter+x+grip
