Please don't spend $300 on a text book... It's $45 to rent on amazon. Also just wait until classes start, for classes like biology it's likely the professor will say that everything you need to know is in the powerpoint.

If you want true noise cancelling headphones, I highly recommend Bose QC25s. I bought some last year to block out noise to focus in my dorm and couldn't be happier. Excellent sound quality, also. I should also note they are very comfortable and I don't mind wearing them for extended periods of time.

I heard he's doing a layman's overview of string theory, general relativity, and quantum mechanics, which is similar to what he did in his book The Elegant Universe.

I think it really comes down to personal preference. I went to a store and tried on a few until I found one I liked. This is the backpack I ultimately bought and still use.

I don't think you'll have to worry about your laptop getting stolen out of your room, but if you want to be extra safe, look into getting one of these.

Not even kidding, I had this one for the longest time because of the squirrel experiments they make you do in Ecology. But uh...it definitely didn't work on squirrels. They practically sat on top of it as they ate the peanuts. Doubt it would work on birds.

Alternatively, some of the vending machines on campus will have gum if you really need it in a hurry. Also, you can find bulk packages of gum on Amazon for cheap.

I installed an Ecobee in my place a couple of months ago and just saved the old thermostat, faceplate, and hardware so that I can reinstall it when I move out. As /u/StewieGriffin26 mentioned, check your wiring situation, because older thermostats may not have a wire carrying power from your HVAC control board to the thermostat, which newer thermostats require. If there's an unused spare wire in your existing cable bundle that's long enough, you can use it to run power from the HVAC control board to your thermostat. Otherwise you may need to install a new thermostat cable with enough wires to run an additional power wire, unless Nest has a power extender kit option similar to Ecobee, or some other workaround to avoid running new cable.

I'm not on campus anymore, but I regularly carry a ESEE Izula II in my front pocket. However, I would not recommend carrying a knife for self defense if you don't have some form of training.

I had an old, heavy, bulky 17 inch laptop and while the screen size was great, it was a pain in the ass to carry around. I also built a decent desktop, and my old laptop finally died, so I'm probably going to buy a used Samsung chromebook for around $190. I'll try to do Chrome remote desktop to my desktop, or maybe ssh/sftp to my desktop to modify the code files directly. If that doesn't work then I'll install Ubuntu on it and work there directly. I haven't done this yet of course so I don't know how well it works in practice but you might want to consider this as a possible solution.

Does it have to be a specific year because I found this on amazon with a quick google search

Your link isn't working for me.

He's right about the book, here's an example

(I didn't buy it from amazon)

I assume it's either this or possibly a new 3rd edition that will be used.
