Doh-dohs Black extra hard bushings will help. I'm over 200 lbs and have to have hard bushings. You won't be able to carve a bowl with those bushings but it sounds like you may have some practice to go until then anyway.

Start with Doh-Doh Black Extra hard Then once those are comfortable switch to bones hard bushings. That's what I currently skate and can easily carve a bowl with them.

Don't give up! It's so fun and so rewarding and easily the best workout I have ever had.

The name of that book was The Handmade Skateboard. It's pretty good and covers a lot of gluing. I love to glue wood together.
