I cosplayed as Law last year as well, but this year I finally managed to get a good shot of this outfit! The hilt of my sword suffered a bit throughout the con, but the added breeze was a nice touch with the feathers, and my posing is getting better (I usually really suck at it, much to the disappointment of everyone who asked to take my picture, I’m sure). Follow me on Instagram at @black_leg_robby if you feel so inclined, and throw me an upvote on GoGo Cosplay's Anime Expo 2019 Showcase if you feel it's worthy enough (there is some really good cosplay on there)!

EDIT: I've been getting a lot of questions about the shirt, so I'll answer that here along with some other questions about the outfit:

  • I got the shirt from Zazzle right here in navy blue, and at the time I chose the American Apparel Fine Jersey Long Sleeve T-Shirt, which doesn't seem to be an option anymore, but I'm sure the Basic Long Sleeve T-Shirt is more or less the same. I then altered it a little bit to better fit my physique.
  • For the hat, I used the one released by Cospa as a base, and then I sewed the bill more upward, filled in the spots to better work with the seam splits while also adding new spots to accommodate said sewing, added padding to fill it out, and fluffed up the bill to make it look more like the manga.
  • The tattoos are temporary tattoos that I printed myself using Sunnyscopa Laser Temporary Tattoo Decal Paper. Note that it requires the use of a laser printer and will not work on inkjet printers, so you must have access to a laser printer in order to use it. If you don't have a laser printer, you can easily go to the nearest Fedex Office and have them print it for you. They do make an inkjet version, but I've found that it doesn't work nearly as well (rubs off easier and the ink bleeds).
  • For the jeans, I first created a few different stencils for the spots, and then used brown DecoFabric markers to draw them in.
  • I got the earrings from here, and they work really well.
  • I purchased the sword from Coswinner.com. It's a little pricey, but it's the appropriate length and is made of wood, allowing me to take it safely into the convention center. Only problem I have with it is that the damn ribbon on the hilt easily slides out of place and is difficult to put back properly. Other than that, it works well and looks great!

Also, sometimes Law does smile! I do understand where people are coming from though, haha. I'm pretty sure I do have some pics of me scowling, but I definitely need to work more on that aspect of Law's character.

Since I saw other people wanting to do voice acting and you yourself might be unsure about what gear to buy, here is advice from a musician:

Try to practice with what you have, when you start to feel more secured about your skill, try to buy a better microphone, do NOT buy a condenser microphone, those are too sensitive if you are starting out, buy a dynamic microphone instead!

Recommended microphones, both made by the brand 'Shure':

SM58

SM7B (If you really can afford it)

To be able to use a microphone that is from an XLR cable to maintain quality you need an audio interface, there is a market solution that brings you to a prosumer level very cheaply and it is called a 'focusrite scarlett solo' it is one of the cheapest but also most durable and stable interfaces in the industry that is worth having! You can hook your electric guitar too if you want to.

The interfaces:

Focusrite scarlett Solo

Focusrite scarlett 2i4 (If you really can afford it, options like the Pad button make it amazing for general use outside of recording)

Now you need a DAW if you want to upgrade from audacity, a DAW (Digital audio workstation) is your workfield, it is what provides you what you want in terms of FX or samples (if it delivers them)

Good cheap DAWs:

Reaper by Cockos

Ableton live 10 intro (more expensive but you get more fx to it, it is less userfriendly for beginners from my experience though)

VSTs are what you will be using in your arsenal for FX and voice processing, you got tons of free VSTs that work like a charm and you got tons of paid ones that obviously work better but you can get them for cheap at plugin boutique! or sign in for emails of the sellers! PM me to request the list for free VSTs, if the demand is high, I'll make a list for it here and edit the post!

Haha. Well the series does that to you.
Well the next batch of books are going to be released in a second box set on Nov. 4 with volumes 24-46.
Amazon Link

Trying to think of other things you can do to stall him haha. There's the anime collection sets which contains seasons, and a couple of movies out in English (The Desert Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta , Strong World, and upcoming Film Z). After he finishes the books, the Desert Princess one should be alright and I say refrain from purchasing Strong World until you manage to get the second box set. The film is set after the events the volumes contain in that box set. There are a couple of One Piece games out like the recent Unlimited World Red, although it might be huge spoilers as he isn't caught up all the way. Model Collections of the One Piece pirate ships like the Going Merry are also available.

I'll provide some links that you can purchase from the site in a bit, for both EN Amazon and JP Amazon

EN Color Walk 1 || EN Color Walk 2, the only one I know that has both an English and Japanese version || EN Color Walk 3 || EN Color Walk 4 || EN Color Walk 5 || EN Color Walk 6 || EN Color Walk 7 || EN Color Walk 8 |||

EN Compendium (don't remember exactly but it covers Color Walk 1-3) || EN Compendium 2 (should be Color Walks 4-5)

while the Compendium are a cheaper deal for the English Amazon site and has English translations, the pages tend to be more banged-up than the individual Japanese ones; My current copy of Compendium 1 when I first got it was already close to having the pages fall out from the hardcover. But if I had to be honest, I didn't even bother reading any of the words there lol, I was more focused on looking at all the pictures/artwork. If you're in Japan, you should be able to pick up these color walks pretty easily

---

JP Color Walk 1 - 5 - Pre-TS

Color Walk 6 - Post-TS 1

Color Walk 7 - Post-TS 2

Color Walk 8 - Post-TS 3, the most recent one

I can't comment on whether you should go for subs or dubs, but should you choose dubs, you have to make sure you get the right ones!

There are two different dubs: 4kids and Funimation.

The 4kids dub was apparently really bad. 4kids themselves said they were embarrassed. Funimation then got the rights and restarted. They have better voice acting, uncut episodes, and the same titles/content as the Japanese series. (Source)

Overall, Funimation fixed everything and has a great thing going. A lot of people think that One Piece dubs are bad because the 4kids dubs were bad, and that's what a lot of people watched on TV, but the TV-14 Funimation dubs are awesome!

Also, $20 for 26 episodes is not bad at all. I ordered all six DVDs for a bit more than $100. I've been impressed with the package, and the DVDs sure do look good on my shelf.

Anyway, should you choose to go with the dubs, here's an Amazon link to the DVDs you want. 1-6 are out, and the seventh is up for pre-order.

I hope that's helpful!

u/bowlnoodlez · 2 pointsr/OnePiece

Do yourself and your friends a favor and start collecting the trades. I've realized that it's a lot easier for people to pick up a new manga when they have something physical to hold and read and not just a website or torrent. If they get hooked they can easily find the rest online.

If they're skeptical about picking up the manga from the beginning, maybe because of the art style or what not, try getting them to watch the first thirty or so episodes which goes all the way up to the beginning of the Arlong Park arc, then try to ween them onto the manga or convince them to stay with the anime.

In the end, just show them why you love it so much, mild spoilers is okay when they have so much to look forward to in the long run, although I try not to show them anything beyond Skypeia. Every time I've gotten someone into OP it's when I've shown them some of my favorite fights (Luffy v. Crocodile, Sanji v. Bon Kurei, etc.), and it seems to do the trick ;)

u/lulzmort · 2 pointsr/OnePiece

I would personally start with the beginning as you can get all of the translated versions on amazon and if it is his birthday then you could get him one of the two box sets that go for about 100$ and I would also say that one piece is pretty good for child audiances but there are some heavy themes, some mild language nothing over the F-word and a lot more blood than what the TV show has on it but it is still good for children also if you ever collect them all or want to give him something else I would suggest one of the color walks as they show off his fantastic art really well.

u/dapikmincoder · 2 pointsr/OnePiece

Yeah the start is messy, but getting into it is super simple. If you buy the DVDs or watch dubbed on https://funimation.com/shows/one-piece/#videos, every episode will be uncut. The CN cut dub only ever aired on Cartoon Network, and never made it to streams or Home Video. If you go on their stream, just start on episode 1 and select English. If you're buying the DVDs, it will be cheaper to buy a "Collection" than a "Voyage". A Voyage DVD is a $30 collection of 10-14 episodes, and there's usually 4-7 voyages per season (So A Voyage DVD will usually have a title like "Season Two Voyage Three"). The Collection DVDs are quite simply two Voyage DVDs packaged together for the same $30 price. It still has all the same Commentary, Special Features, and everything. The only downside is they're realized usually like 5 months later than the Voyage DVDs. They're not organized by season, and are simply numbered chronologically (So like Episodes 469-492 wouldn't be called "Season 8 Collection 1", it'd just be called "Collection 20"). https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Collection-Episodes-Exclusive/dp/B00MQ2X7UU/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=One+Piece+box+set&qid=1567264801&s=movies-tv&sr=1-1 There were originally these things called Collection sets. It would literally be 4 Collection DVDs bundled into one, along with some posters and collectibles, all for $100. But as you can tell, they're low on stock, so the best deals you can get is a used one for like $500, so it's not a good deal anymore.

u/adyniz · 1 pointr/OnePiece

I think the manga boxsets are the cheapest.

First 23 volumes for around 117$ USD

The 2nd boxset (24-46 volumes) is coming out this November.

You'll have to buy the individual volumes after the 46th. Yes, they're worth it. :) [+ it's always nice to legally support the series]

u/arabwes · 5 pointsr/OnePiece

This will save you about $100

http://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Box-Set-Baroque/dp/1421560747/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1404627595&sr=8-4&keywords=one+piece

and if you want to save more, you can get all the 3 volume omnibus editions. They go to chapters 28-29-30 (in October, new one comes out every 4 months). That should save you about $180 if you do this rather than individual volumes and that's not including whether you get future omnibuses as well.

u/YonkouProductions · 7 pointsr/OnePiece

Hey OP,

The best and most affordable release of the One Piece manga is the One Piece Box Sets with the first one covering volumes 1-23 of the manga and the second one covering volumes 24-46 of the manga.

Amazon has the first box set up for $98 which is a pretty good deal since MSRP is $185. I'd say get him that first then if he reads through that then go for the second one. The boxsets came out November 2012 and November 2013 respectively so keep that in mind if you want to pace him until the next set comes out.

If you want to get single volumes, I've heard Barnes and Noble have a 2 for 1 on Manga so you could check for that from time to time...

Also, on the anime side of things there are some really great premium boxsets that have been coming out, exclusive to Amazon priced at $89 MSRP with roughly 100 episodes each. The price fluctuates from $60.00 to $90 on Amazon but here's the first, second and third Treasure Chest Boxsets

Here's the Amazon Canada link at the very least. My buddy gave me the Going Merry one for Christmas, it was really fun to put together and looks nice on my tv stand.

u/zorospride · 8 pointsr/OnePiece

That's cool. For others considering the same thing I saw a deal on Twitter the other day that had the first 23 volume "East Blue" Box Set preorder on sale for $119.27. That's a pretty good deal. Amazon Link.

u/SweatyTripod · 1 pointr/OnePiece

Thanks so much! I can't believe I didn't bother searching the next two arcs to see if there was, I feel so dumb.

For anyone else interested - I consider this to be a confirmation that there will in fact be another one.

Looks like I know what my Christmas present will be.

u/BlazeItSword · 1 pointr/OnePiece

You can buy them individually, which is ridiculously expensive, or you could by them as a boxed set on Amazon or something. The box-art is pretty nice, so there's an added bonus.

u/newbatthis · 12 pointsr/OnePiece

I personally collect figures. I'd recommend this one. Any One Piece fan would recognize and appreciate it and it wont break the bank.

u/fractalpanda · 1 pointr/OnePiece

The manga box sets are worth the money!!! Definitely pick those up if you can. They’re pretty cheap on Amazon (retail price is $185 but here they’re about $110):

One Piece Box Set: East Blue and Baroque Works, Volumes 1-23 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1421560747/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_R-VJAbR07BS9J

This show is just a really long adventure to keep it real simple.

As for gifts, Probably One of the "Color walks", a collection of colored art by the Author. Most people don't have those.
http://www.amazon.com/Piece-Color-Walk-Book-Vol/dp/1421541130/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418147791&sr=8-1&keywords=color+walk

If you know their favorite character, A figure of the character might be good. Though those go up to $60-100 for the good ones. example

I would also say buy them some of the Manga volumes but I'm not sure if your secret santa already owns them.

u/goodguynextdoor · 3 pointsr/OnePiece

O wow, I didn't know this.

I'm wondering though, how much of a difference is this 1-2-3 from buying them separately as 1, 2 and 3? apart from the price, is there any perks on buying the volumes separately for the early ones?

edit: I just checked, it seems like the 3-in-1 One Piece volumes seem to not be part of the promotional buy 3 get 1 (darn) but some of the others are...

u/ExpendableGerbil · -1 pointsr/OnePiece

Hate to be the boy-scout in the room but you could always just buy the omnibus on amazon. They sell them in three-volumes softcover books which comes up to a pretty decent price.

And now for the downvotes...

u/AllDatSalt · 2 pointsr/OnePiece

Yeah and I got in the the box set you can buy here:

https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Box-Set-Baroque/dp/1421560747/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482670519&sr=8-2&keywords=box+one+piece+manga

I just had the shelf set up for the manga lol, so I thought it be cooler to put them on display

u/Flames838 · 1 pointr/OnePiece

I think you should stick with Viz whenever you can. And if you're buying the volumes, I'd highly recommend getting the box sets if you can. They're much cheaper than buying the individual volumes, and come with extras as well.

u/Sakata_Kintoki · 3 pointsr/OnePiece

> i know some websites release the new chapters each week for free,

These are illegal.

You can buy boxsets of the manga volumes which contain 23 volumes for about $100. Boxset 1 and 2 will take you volume 46, after which, you're free to grab individual volumes or just wait for the next boxset. Each volumes sells for about $5. A new volume is released every 3 months. They're available on Amazon.

I would suggest reading the manga the same way you watched the anime, from the beginning. But if you're absolutely intent on skipping around, read impel down/marineford and Water 7/Enies Lobby and then read through Punk Hazard and Dressrosa.

As for easter eggs, you'll have the privelege of reading Oda's question corner in the volumes.

Edit: Boxset 1

and Boxset 2

The next English volume to be released will be Volume 73 on January 6th

u/kunuch · 1 pointr/OnePiece

You probably can't get the same amount of volumes that I received. They do sell the box set on Japanese Amazon but since Amazon's not selling it. There's no reason to buy it from someone selling it in the UK or NJ, USA for example.
