OK, sorry about the delay, my computer is not put together right now... It is halfway through getting a hard-line water tubing job done...
So, as far as tools, just get this it may not be the best, and odds are the 24pin tool will break, but truth be told, I prefer to use flattened paper clips for that anyway. What you really need is the molex tool, and fan tool.
For sleeving, that is a personal preference. I personally use 550 Paracord, because it comes in so many colors, but the plastic ones are WAY nicer to work with (or so I hear). I'd go with the plastic (MDPX? MNPX? Something like that... Check sidebar) if I were you.
Last but not least, the heatshrink. Heatshrink is heatshrink is heatshrink, so really, just choose a color scheme, decide what you think will look good, and go on amazon to buy it PRE-CUT. I can not stress PRE-CUT enough, because they come perfectly straight, perfectly sized, which adds a lot to the aesthetic, that having "mostly straight" heatshrink takes away. If you have any other questions, let me know!
I used TechFlex 1/8" 25 feet from Amazon.
I used VKTech heatshrink.
I could have done a much better job on the heatshrink on both ends of the cable, however I didn't have time to use my heat gun so I used my Zippo with a Thunderbird butane insert.
It turned out pretty good in my opinion, however like I said, I could have done a much better job.
This is the crimping tool I'm using. It seems ok, and had good reviews on Amazon. I will say that I'm having a hard time with the "pre-crimp," in that if I go all the way to 3 clicks, it's too far, so I'm having to stop at 2 clicks. Not sure that's causing an issue, though. I'm using 18 ga wire.
Based on some of the other comments, I'm pretty sure I was carrying the sleeving up too far, and that was making it hard to get the pin in the hole. I've back the sleeving up/trimmed some of it down, and it's going a little better.
Thanks for the response!
I’ve had mixed results with cheap crimpers, but I’ve heard that the IWISS SN-48B do a pretty good job. I just haven’t used them myself, so can’t say for sure.
I also live in Canada, i recently made custom usb cables for mech keyboards.
For the tech flex, after a lot of research to find a seller, I stumbled across this :
https://www.cabletiesandmore.ca/
They have fair pricing and they are located in canada.
For the cables, I bought premade usb cables from amazon : https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B002I041AK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_K1USDbCED727N
The outside diameter is perfect to fit inside 550 paracord. It is also 28/28 AWG. Just cut both ends and you are good to go.
Actually I was planning to do so so I could learn to sleeve for once and save some $, but I also found this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G7VSFEI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 which seem to be pretty good looking and fairly cheap.
Kinda afraid I fuck it all up with my cables lol.
Extensions are easier to make, as you said 1 to 1, no hassle. Custom cables for modular PSU requires pin-out diagrams and a tester to insure that the cables are correct and won't "blow your rig." You may also run into double wires, which require a little more work to make them look good and function correctly.
In the end extensions are cheaper, less time consuming, and easier to install for most people. Custom cables are a lot more time consuming and require more tools to ensure that everything is kosher.
Lutro0's double wire guide.
I recomend getting one of these, should be available from amazon ger https://www.amazon.com/Engineer-PA-20-Universal-Terminal-Crimping/dp/B002AVVO7U
If that one is not available mdpcx has excellent crimper. You can also get sleeving from them
If you want to go full budget get paracord from ebay, heatshrink from local electronic shop or something along those lines.
I recomend getting atx terminals from ebay or ali just watch out that they MUST have long tabs(thing that go into cable). When i ordered some connectors i got extra pins which have sjort tabs and cant grip the cable good enough.
Connectors also from ebay/ali.Pm me if u want to know something morw
Thank you so much! I can only function with steps lol.
So by following the pin layout, it will direct me to connect, for example, pin 1 on the psu to pin 4 on the motherboard side?
Edit: And would [this] (http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-24-pin-Power-Supply-Tester/dp/B005CTCD6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398573072&sr=8-1&keywords=psu+tester) help me check if I put the wires into the connectors in correctly?
Not sure about the one you listed, but this is what I use and it works perfectly.
I have wire and tools. Yes. And I agree that I need to read up. My PSU is 24 pin to 24 pin. EVGA Supernova 650W.The connectors are right I believe, PCIE 8 pins. I have watched as many youtube vids as I could find. This is the wire im prolly gonna get
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FPCHZ6/ref=twister_B075381N8P?th=1
Here is a good tester. It's prime as well!
I bought a couple of these and they're quite good.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019Q6Y2MK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aQMOzbQ2Y0GV0
The extra length for chilling on the couch is totally worth it.
https://www.amazon.com/Knipex-1262180-Adjusting-Insulation-Strippers/dp/B003B8WB5U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522500255&sr=8-3&keywords=knipex+stripper&dpID=41Zec6vGvSL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
I use this stripping tool. It works great.
As far as the crimpers go I don't know. I bought the MDPC ones.
This might help to make sure your wiring job was correct http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-24-pin-Power-Supply-Tester/dp/B005CTCD6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398573072&sr=8-1&keywords=psu+tester
I can't take a picture right now but, [this](HT-225D Full Cycle Ratchet Crimping Tool with interchangeable die set HT-225D https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JLN93S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_awaJyb95VZZB1) is the crimper I bought on amazon. The crimps looks pretty much like OP's right crimp in his picture
I was thinking something like: https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-16-Inch-Power-Combo-107639/dp/B005E2XRNG/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_lp_img_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0NQ7A97F93FCSJX11XCH WOuld i be able to convert the molex to Sata power?
I kinda cheaped out, should have believed the reviews. do you recommend one that isn't that expensive? edit:used 18awg terminals from mod-x
Alright, I'm going to do as legion and zeekay have suggested.
Right now I'm looking at this crimper: Amazon Link
This pin removal tool: Amazon Link
Less sure where to get pins (the ones on amazon have terrible reviews), sleeves, and shrink wrap.
Where do you guys shop?
