Yes, there is a big difference.
I bought an Xbox One X and used my bro's spare 1080p monitor before deciding to get a 4k monitor, since it's a 4k xbox..
DO IT!!! You'll thank me later. Best decision ever!! HUGE improvement in picture quality and worth the $397 I spent on it. Very happy with mine, it's a 28" Ben Q.. With that said, I recommend it, did a bunch of research prior to purchasing..
https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-EL2870U-Anti-glare-Brightness-Intelligence/dp/B078HWN5CX
Be sure to change the output to 4k in Xbox settings!
I got a PNY 240GB SSD and just a basic External SSD enclosure, both from my local Best Buy. The enclosure was pretty cheap and i could have probably found it even cheaper on amazon or something but i didn’t want to wait for shipping.
Also: Microsoft says that the Xbox one requires the external drive to be 256GB or more to work, but it’s not true. Like i said, mines a 240GB and it works just fine. At Best Buy, the 240GB was $70 and the 480GB was $130, so it just depends on how much you want to pay.
Edit: I paid like $25 at Best Buy on my enclosure but here’s one on amazon for $10 link
It definitely runs better and always has there's just a lot of crashing bugs with the May update.
My buildings render a lot better (everything is usually loaded in as soon as I'm in the plane), the console is pretty quite, and all my other games look amazing and load faster.
I play CODWWII, Assassins Creed Origins, and NBA 2K and it's a way better experience than my OG Xbox.
I upgraded bc my disc drive in my OG Xbox was busted and I had to tilt my xbox up to a 45 degree angle for the discs to be read lol.
EDIT: I also just ordered the SSD below bc I had the extra cash, it arrives today so I'll let you know if it makes difference with PUBG and my other games:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The drive I had laying around was one of these.
https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-250GB-SSD-WDS250G2B0A/dp/B073SB2MXW/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1522940690&sr=8-7&keywords=256gb+ssd+drive
So I bought one of these to make it an external drive.
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Tool-free-Enclosure-Optimized-EC-UASP/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1522940862&sr=1-3&keywords=ssd+enclosure
There are faster drives but if you are on a budget that is a pretty good deal. I have been using it and had several crashes and I am back in game in like 20-30 seconds compared to 2+ minutes before. Also, during normal game loading I used to only have 10 seconds to run around on the loading island and now I have 50-60 seconds. Buildings load as soon as I land now too. So not sure how much faster a more expensive drive could make it but this one works great.
It absolutely helps but it has to be a Solid State Drive, not just an external hard drive. I bought this Samsung one back in April and it is actually $12 cheaper than when I bought it. Since that was months ago, someone might have a more current example of which is currently the best on market. I've been very happy with it though.

Got an ssd for my PC and figured I’d test it out on the Xbox before putting in it there.
My ssd didn’t make it to my PC lol not only does it help with PUBG, but load times in a lot of games benefit.
Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_ipCXflemgfEW4
With this enclosure
Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] Black (EC-UASP) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_VSK1vlJ4IRvgp
Piece of cake to set up. Put the drive in the enclosure (very easy), plug into usb, add games.
Edit- played PUBG on internal hard drive for test and live, vs ssd for both and the benefit is noticeable.
This is what I have and it works great. Pretty good price right now too.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-S700-PRO-256GB-SATA-III-Internal-SSD-Solid-State-Drive-2AP98AA-ABL/876640446
Just throw it in a cheap external enclosure and you're good to go.

There's 240-256 GB internal SSDs on Amazon for under $50. You'd need an enclosure for them but a few of my friends have gone this route and I haven't heard any complaints.

One friend for sure bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Performance-Internal-SP256GBSS3A55S25/dp/B075RJS55D/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=ssd&qid=1556042730&refinements=p_n_feature_three_browse-bin%3A14027458011&rnid=6797515011&s=pc&sr=1-9

He spent under $50 for the SSD and enclosure combined.

He says buildings are rendered seconds after leaving the plane and the current freeze ups in the beginning of the match are about a split second long and only happen once or twice. Can confirm, this sounds identical to the performance of my way more expensive Samsung T5 external.

Of note: YMMV with 240 GB drives. I've heard most work but I've also heard of some not. It depends on how much storage is available to the user (this might be able to be formatted on a PC before hooking to Xbox, but I've never done it).
I bought a Samsung off amazon for like 120. Maybe coulda done better shopping around but i trust the name and it’s working great.
Samsung T5 Portable SSD - 250GB - USB 3.1 External SSD (MU-PA250B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073H552FK?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
When you think about it, though, PC gamers have to upgrade hardware to get the latest and most up-to-date games all the time. The Xbox One has been out for 5 years so it does kind of make sense that to get the newest and best game to run well, some kind of hardware update is required. This mindset made shelling out $60 for this SSD and this enclosure waaaay easier. And let me tell you, it was absolutely worth it. And not only will it make load times in PUBG faster, it will speed up every other game that I play as well.
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-250GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0764WCXCV
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Tool-free-Enclosure-Optimized-EC-UASP/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S
I was right in front of my destination so I guess I could have just waited a moment. Oh well lol.
I’d absolutely recommend getting this instead of the X. Performance wise, this will provide the game you want. Graphics wise, the X is still appealing, but the SSD route is great for other reasons.
Lets break it down. Most people are getting external ssd's. Why because it adds on to the memory without removing existing storage. USB 3.0 provides enough throughput for an ssd. But heres the deal, ssds connect through sata ports. So to protect and connect an ssd to an xbox, you need a sata 3 to usb 3.0 connector.
Super important, depending on your xbox, the internal connection could be sata 2. If you have an og xbox it is sata 2 inside. one x and xbox one s have sata 3. Therefore a ssd will do nothing for speed increase if you do an internal one on an original xbox one. You need to connect via usb 3.0 externally to see performance gains.
So buy a decent solid state with at least 240gb, the actual minimum spec. And spend 10 bucks on a sata 3 to usb enclosure. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Tool-free-Enclosure-Optimized-EC-UASP/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=sr_1_4/135-4131140-8815732?ie=UTF8&qid=1525800622&sr=8-4&keywords=usb+3+external+hard+drive+enclosure
100% but do research. Most people that tell you this doesn’t work for them have simply gone about doing it incorrectly. Xbox (OG at least) requires the external to have at least 256gb. I picked this WD ssd about a month ago, and the difference in gameplay is night and day... There still are issues, and yes, cqc can still be a pain at times, but the game is definitely smoother and the load times are certainly quicker.
WD 256GB My Passport SSD Portable Storage - USB 3.1 - Black-Gray - WDBK3E2560PSL-WESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNN2WQM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fQyMAbD85Z76G
Obviously don't know everyone's budgets here, but I would more highly recommend getting Samsung's internal + enclosure if you're willing to spend a little more.

It's $127 and 1TB of space, making it more future proofed. 256GB will barely get you anywhere these days with the size of games as they are. There's also a 500GB for $72.
Samsung EVO 1TB

I just think that 256GB size is too small even with the low cost. You're not going to want 2+ of these when you realize how great they are, but how few games it can fit.
I got this one and so did my brother: WD 256GB My Passport SSD Portable Storage - USB 3.1 - Black-Gray - WDBK3E2560PSL-WESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNN2WQM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
I liked it because it was plug and play ready
You might want to try a powerline adapter. It basically allows you to send network traffic from one normal power plug to another in your house. I've used one in the past, and it seemed pretty reliable... definitely better than the wifi you're using now, and they're not too expensive (about $40).
Example:
https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-ethernet-Adapter-TL-PA4010KIT/dp/B00AWRUICG/
So you'd connect like this:
Router ->
Powerline #1 (which is plugged directly into the wall near your router) ->
Powerline #2 (which is plugged directly into the wall near your xbox) ->
Xbox
fair enough
As for your question, I very nearly got an SSD last payday but as I am on an X I decided I didn't need it and got a 4K tv instead.
It will be cheaper for you to get an External case for an internal SSD and buying an internal SSD to fit in it.
A case like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/?coliid=I2XJWC89JAYSO2&colid=26Y94U6JP79W9&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
With an SSD like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0784SLQM6/?coliid=I7WS62APTUVY7&colid=26Y94U6JP79W9&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
This is a 500GB internal SSD, you can probably get a smaller one if you wanted for cheaper.

This is the exact setup I just bought for my 1TB Xbox One. PUBG is amazing as well as I found a massive improvment in Tera Online. I also just needed more space.
Had to buy the enclosure separately but it includes the cable. I got mine from ebay but this one seems like the most popular one in this sub.
Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] Black (EC-UASP) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TwD8AbK2JWZKA
Like u/wahwahwaaaaah noted, enclosures for SSDs are pretty cheap. Amazon has a few for less than $10, one of which I purchased and am very happy with. They connect via USB to any of the USB slots on the Xbox.
Here's the one I have: Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized ... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_r7tQAb8WS0XW6

I bought this one recently. Its a little expensive, but its an official one made for xbox one by seagate, so decided to spend the extra money to get it as i had gift cards i needed to use anyway.
If you want one thats much cheaper that should work just as good, get this one:

I have this one. Only thing is you have to get a sata to usb cable. Most of my friends run ssd as well and I’m usually the first one to load everything. Anyways works perfect for me and at that price you can’t beat it
Yeah that's not bad, though the price could be a bit better. It's a single self-contained unit so it makes things much easier for you. But even just buying an SSD intended for internal use in a PC along with an external housing would not break the bank and isn't especially difficult to deal with. You pop open the enclosure, slide in the SSD to the port, close the enclosure, and plug into the Xbox and format.
For example, you could go with this SanDisk SSD for US$33.99 and this Sabrent enclosure for US$8.99
There are a lot of options out there, but personally I went with a USB version and it works like a charm. I load in quicker after crashes than my friends that own a 1X a and everything is rendered before I land. Some people hate on the "flash drive USB versions", but it works for me and was recommend through this sub.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YFI1A66/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is perfect! Thank you so much!!
So you have this SSD and then this enclosure, right?
So theoretically if I wanted more space I could go with this 1TB SSD?
Not that guy but I got this one

1TB is overkill. This is the cheapest option.

Samsung 860 EVO 250 GB $89.26 (850 would work too, but the 860 is better and cheaper right now)
Sabrent USB 3.0 SSD Enclosure $8.99
These are what I use (850) and I've never had a loading issue again. Also if you freeze you can get back in the game in 45 seconds. It also works wonders on other games like BF1.
-Samsung T5 external 250GB+ $119
-MyDigitalSSD OTG v2 240GB+ $90
-Samsung 860 EVO 250GB+ $80 + $20 enclosure w/ USB 3.0
Any of these will work great. T5 is the best performing, the OTG is probably the cheapest overall considering enclosures. The first two are plug and play, the third one you need the enclosure to use.
I have both of the first two.
Some considerations:
-You can use a regular USB stick of the 240GB+ class, but it will corrupt and die out sooner than a purpose-built SSD (about 10x the life expectancy). USB sticks are a little slower on read/write as well.
-Getting an external HDD like a mypassport will not load you in as fast as an SSD but will still slightly improve performance on an OG/S if you can't swing the extra ~$40 (I have one of those too and don't recommend it for this game)
Get a SSD and an external enclosure. Here's the best one I can find for the price.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071KGRXRH/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OJ3UJ2S
My brother just ordered this exact pair, it should be here within 2 days. I can compare it to my X if you want and let you know if it's worth it (although I'm 99% it'll be the same speed as the X so it'll be worth it)
Here's my SSD for 35 bucks. It's fantastic, aaaand cost effective! Don't forget to buy a housing too!
Silicon power 256GB
I just bought these a couple weeks ago for my 1X and they’ve worked great:
256 GB SSD ($31)
USB3 SSD Enclosure
These were the best deals I could find... very well reviewed and work great. Buildings are rendered before I land (weapons take another 0-2 seconds). I got 256 GB because it’s the minimum needed for Xbox and I mostly just wanted it for PUBG. If you want to put a lot of games on it though then I’d get a bigger drive and maybe look at SSHD options (cheaper but supposedly work about as well). Main things I checked were read/write speeds, price, and reviews (specifically reviews mentioning Xbox).
Silicon Power 256GB SSD 3D NAND With R/W Up To 550/450MB/s A55 SLC Cache Performance Boost SATA III 2.5" 7mm (0.28") Internal Solid State Drive (SP256GBSS3A55S25) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RJS55D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_QNn2AbFXZK9X0
I took a gamble on this one and it works perfectly.
Hmm... sooo if you don’t mind helping me out here would this ssd
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073SB2MXW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525459077&sr=8-2-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=wd+blue+3d+nand+250gb+ssd&psc=1
And this enclosure
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525459498&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sabrent+2.5+inch+sata+to+usb+3.0+tool-free&psc=1
Would these be suitable for my OG Xbox? Like they would work and that’s all I’d need right? Lol
PNY 240 ssd
That’s an internal ssd. You need an “enclosure” to fit it into. They’re all pretty much the same. You just need it to support USB 3.0 (which most do nowadays)
Sabrent Enclosure
Just pop them together. Plug it in. The Xbox will recognize it and then you go from there.
/u/metalafrosbff
If you’re interested, this is one I’m running. This is the least expensive to do it. Gets ya up and running at about $40.

I'm just copy and pasting my comment for you. :)
If you're willing to spend money but don't want to reduce available space due to limited slots this was what I bought to upgrade from having 2x 2Tb external hard drives.
Samsung T5 Portable SSD - 500GB - USB 3.1 External SSD (MU-PA500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GZBT36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1E8SCbJVJBRNQ
Considering it costs 100$ just for a 500Gb, I definitely wasn't about to buy a 2Tb. So instead I bought this too.
Silicon Power 4TB Rugged Portable External Hard Drive Armor A60, Shockproof USB 3.1 Gen 1 for PC, Mac, Xbox and PS4, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GFDRFSR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qJ8SCb6H93SBR
For another 100$ I bought this 4Tb, for 30$ more you can buy 5Tb. Easily beats paying 350$ for a 2Tb SSD as long as you just put games that need the boost on the SSD and dump the rest on the regular external.
SSD $59.50
Enclosure $8.99
I have this setup myself on original xbox, works great.
I use Silicon Power 256GB SSD 3D NAND With R/W Up To 550/450MB/s A55 SLC Cache Performance Boost SATA III 2.5" 7mm (0.28") Internal Solid State Drive (SP256 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RJS55D?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
And also Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] Black (EC-UASP) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
Works flawlessly.
If you free up some room on your hard drive or buy an external hard drive then it’s much better. I have a 250 gb external drive with only PUBG on it and I don’t have any issues with stuff rendering in and I have an original Xbox One.
This is what I have.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01JHLJBO8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522175462&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=256gb+flash+drive&dpPl=1&dpID=41GSPxK1AOL&ref=plSrch
Don’t know about cheapest but this is the one i use. Ready straight out of the box via USB (no enclosure needed) and currently on offer on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XNN2WQM?ref_=Oct_CARAsinC_430547031_0
This is the one I’ve been using for close to a month now. Doesn’t require any assembly and works great. Had to hard reset my Xbox and then setup was easy. Buildings, furniture, and loot all render before I hit the ground.
SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 250GB SDSSDEXT-250G-G25 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WGPCW5L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_20fNAbPZGM3R3
I went with this one from SadDisk
But you really can't go wrong as long as you get a Solid State Drive (SSD), it is at a minimum 240GB, and supports usb 3.0. If you get an internal SSD you need to by an adapter that supports usb 3.0. Anything smaller than 240GB and xbox won't recognize the drive as game storage and won't format it correctly to store games, it will only let you store music and movies and those types of files.
I have this one and it works great. So worth it SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0 256GB USB 3.0 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JHLJBO8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_y5V-AbTG3CQ7S
SSD : https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Performance-Internal-SP256GBSS3A55S25/dp/B075RJS55D
Enclosure : https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Tool-free-Enclosure-Optimized-EC-UASP/dp/B00OJ3UJ2S
Together, they are pretty cheap. Just pop the SSD in the enclosure, plug in, and you’re good to go.
I've owned and used a Samsung 840 Pro with my Xbox for over 3 years now, if you can afford one then there's zero reason not to buy one. Loading times improve immensely for every game, not just PUBG. When BF1 launched my buddies always wondered how i managed to get a tank at the start of every single round - it was purely because i was loaded into the map/game well before anyone else (30 secs or so compared to one of my mates when we timed it).
Do you have a spare £40?

Done
$100 will solve this problem and have you load back into any crashed game faster. SSD & Enclosure
I agree it shouldn't be necessary but it helps dramatically for rendering.
Best Buy has them (US). Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-500-Portable-250GB-SDSSDEXT-250G-G25/dp/B06WGPCW5L
Short USB cord comes with it. Connect it with your XB turned off. Start up XB, format for games in XB, and transfer PUBG to the SSD in Manage Game menu.
The "Cheap" solution that have been posted on this sub is
This SSD

Matched with this enclosure
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you want a bigger, or better SSD, the recommendation would be something from Samsung.
I got this over a month ago with an enclosure for my S. It works perfectly. Buildings load before I hit the ground and after a crash, I'm usually back into the game within 30-40 seconds.
Silicon Power 256GB SSD 3D NAND With R/W Up To 550/450MB/s A55 SLC Cache Performance Boost SATA III 2.5" 7mm (0.28") Internal Solid State Drive (SP256GBSS3A55S25) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RJS55D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rKs8Ab7QX8069

EDIT - It needs to be at least 240GB for the Xbox to allow it, but any size you want bigger than that is fine. Any game you install on your SSD will load faster than before.
Here is the SSD I bought. $31. You also need to buy a $10 enclosure to plug it in via usb. It has made a massive difference. I would never, ever, ever even try to play this game with out it. Just think about it like upgrading your PC.

You don't need any external hard drive, you need a solid state drive (SSD)
I bought this one for my OG xbox and the loot is all spawned every time i hit the ground. Buildings are totally rendered. It makes school very fun: killing kids who haven't had loot loaded in.

Are laptop/desktop hard drive enclosures different? Is there also any advantage to buying one that’s already enclosed?

This is the enclosure I have. Per your post, perhaps put the LED light side down if you don't want to look at it(or search amazon and pick a different one).
Plug in SSD to enclosure, plug into xbox, xbox will ask to format, format for games, move PUBG to external SSD. Make sure it is not just copied but moved, so it is for sure running from the SSD.

Just curious, which one did you get? I got this one.
I should re-note that the SSD was a huge improvement for my OG Xbox One. I don't have an S, but it's funny because I bought the OG and then the Scorpio Edition, and I gave that to my son. When we play pubg together, he always brags that his loads first. Yesterday was my first day with the SSD, and he complained every game because I was loading faster---and he tried to get me to give him the SSD for the Scorpio.
I refused.
buy a 250GB or less Solid State Drive off of Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0764WCXCV/ref=twister_B078HBG3HK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I bought the Samsung 850 Evo, but its price just jumped up to $95.
You will need an enclosure. This is the one I got.
But there are dozens of quality options if you want a different look. Just make sure it has SATA III connection and USB 3.0 out.

I recently bought both of these and everything loads around 5 seconds before I hit roof tops
You don't need to spend that much. This Sandisk 240GB model along with this SATA III to USB 3 cable will do just as well for less money, but it won't look as pretty lol.
Here. These are decent drives, I have 4 I use in a couple servers and my desktop. Total is under 60 if you’re in the US. Even cheaper if you have amazon prime.

Looks like now the cheapest is a bit over that.

Linked is what i got about a month ago. Works fine, and seemed reasonably priced when I researched SSDs.

the drive slots right in, the lid clips on and you plug into the xbox and you're good to go. Both with next day delivery were £70
This is not true. I purchased this SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB Solid State Drive over the weekend for my X1S. Plugged in, formatted, transferred PUBG to it and now the game runs as good as if not better than X1X. Can someone explain the thought/reasoning behind needing 256gb because 240gb is working just fine for me
I’m fairly certain what you ordered is just a mounting bracket for installing the ssd in a computer. You need a SATA III to usb3.0 external enclosure.
This is the one that I, as well as several other people are using.

This SSD and this enclosure. Trust me it's worth the $95 bucks.

I use the Samsung T5. Improves render and loading times as I would think any SSD you decide on will.

I play on One X. It helped me get in lobby just a bit faster.
Loaned it to my buddy who has an OG Xbox. He used to play-doh and not get in game till we were in the plane. Now he’s getting into the lobby before me. And his buildings are all rendered as soon as he hits ground
