OK... So footwear, socks & undies... all the important stuff... complete...

So what's next?

Well some students choose to go full-blown Nanook and get a heavy winter parka... which is OK, I suppose... it'll definitely keep you warm... But for many students, it can also be an unnecessary budget buster... which is where the aforementioned "layering" comes in...

Instead of buying a heavy winter parka, many students already have a lighter weight windbreaker style jacket that's at least water repellent, if not actually water proof... And that, combined with the ubiquitous hoodie sweatshirt can provide warmth that approximates that of a parka... (and windbreakers often come with a thin nylon "hood" that can add a little rain resistance to the cotton "hoodie", which provides insulation, but no rain resistance)

Remember, you have the flexibility of wearing the windbreaker and hoodies either separately or at the same time... and for added warmth, you can still wear a long sleeve shirt and/or a sweater or another sweatshirt and/or a T-shirt and your thermal tops underneath... How many layers you wear is entirely up to you, depending how cold it is and how windy/rainy it is...

Added warmth for head, neck & hands... Well a knit, stocking cap is always popular since it helps keep the ears warm... And you can wear it anytime, either with or without the hoodie... And a scarf can provide added protection... not just for the neck, but for lower half of your face... NOTE: Big, bulky knit may LOOK warm, but the wind will blow right through it... You want something that is a tight knit that blocks the wind & will help keep your face from getting chapped... An inexpensive pair of ski goggles with tinted lens is not an absolute necessity, but they can come in handy... They cold wind can make you teary-eyed which can make it difficult to see... And the sun reflecting off the snow can also be blindingly bright... So don't shell out the big bucks unless you actually snowmobile or ski... but a cheap pair of goggles definitely helps...

Similarly, an inexpensive pair of ski gloves will keep your hands warm... Once again, you don't need an expensive "good" pair unless you're a frequent downhill skier... But traditional knit gloves or mittens don't stop the wind very well, are NOT moisture resistant and aren't very warm.... Just like your feet: Happy hands are warm & dry!

So that's it... It took quite a bit to write it all down, but when you take it all in, there really isn't THAT much in "specialty" clothing to bust your budget... Especially considering that you're just a freshman and will probably be experiencing at least 4 winters in State College...

If I was going to add just one more thing to this list, it would be for a reasonably priced ski jacket (Men's or Women's) It doesn't have to be very fancy or expensive...and a hood is optional... but wind & rain resistance is imperitive... And compared to only having a lightweight windbreaker/hoodie combination, it provides you with a little more wardrobe flexibility as to how you "layer."

Well FINALLY... I'm DONE... So all-in-all there isn't that much to get... It's just that some years the weather is relatively mild and other years with winter comes early & lasts for what seems a lifetime... and nobody knows for sure what to expect... So it's best to have flexibility in your wardrobe and maximize your year-round utility with layers.

Good luck, and stay warm and DRY.

If you have about $60 you could just buy them and have some tools that will serve you well as a renter and then you could help out your friends (and maybe get free beers or food off them).

I think you mean a stud finder.

https://www.amazon.com/CH-Hanson-03040-Magnetic-Finder/dp/B000IKK0OI/

It's less than ten bucks.

An adjustable wrench is about the same price.

https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-23002-6-Inch-Adjustable-Wrench/dp/B00FFUPS98/

For a cordless rechargeable you're talking about $40 for this one.

I know you said borrow, but if you're renting it's good to have some basic tools for stuff like this and it's an investment to be honest. If you honestly can't get anyone to help, I already have the stud finder (metal detector), and wrench. It would be an excuse for me to finally get a drill. Let me know if nothing else works out.

You need to get and read the book "Getting What You Came For." -- http://www.amazon.com/Getting-What-You-Came-Students/dp/0374524777

This is a great resource on all things grad school and your consideration of the graduate school life.

As far as graduate school goes - you need to contact the department that offered you the admission - and ask about the other things that come with that. First off - is there a tuition waiver and stipend? Generally, with many Ph.D. programs, there is with an expectation that you will work as a Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant during your graduate school timeframes.

Many STEM Masters degree programs do NOT offer this, as the expectation is that you are improving your employability rather than pursuing an academic career.

However, you said you're interested in coding rather than engineering. Have you considered the Penn State IST Ph.D. program? I'm not saying you're a great fit for it -- but it's something you might consider looking into for the future.

Also, consider the online MPS programs. An MPS is a different kind of degree than an MS or MA. It's more geared toward professionals.

So that gets down to the "real" question -- why is it that you want to do graduate school? If you're in it for "More Sh*t" and you're thinking it's just more school that will help you get employed later -- then skip it. Don't do it. You'll suffer and you'll hate it. Instead, once you figure out work and what you want to do in life -- THEN come back for a Masters degree -- if that's what you want.

If you're considering a further academic career - then the Ph.D. programs are what you want -- earning a Masters along the way.

Otherwise -- go get a job and figure out some things in life. Take the coding academy things -- online tutorials for whatever you want. You don't need a degree is something to do that thing (well, for a lot of things you don't). Just having SOME degree checks off that box... and a degree in a technical field is good -- but if you want to work in a different technical field - you just need to find someone to hire you who knows you'll be able to ramp up a bit.

Now, in terms of your transcript - many places don't know or care what was on your transcript - what grade you got in this or that class - doesn't matter as much as you FINISHED. Yeah, some places do care, but you'll figure out who that is. For everyone else - at this stage, it's about "I finished" and "I got an OK GPA." and "It was a technical program." That proves you can learn and do technical stuff. Civil engineering ain't a cakewalk. However, if that kind of work isn't really your calling -- then go do something else... whatever you want to set your mind and time to. You're an engineer dammit.... you can do it.

If you're worried, use a snuggle tube.

There are charcoal filters for cheap as well, you can get from amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Smoke-Buddy-0159-BLU-Personal-Filter/dp/B00478UIB2

Moist towel under the door is extra safety, but those dab pens have very little smell, if it's just you and a friend, so just use one of the methods above and keep your door shut when you puff. If you want to be extra careful, get an inexpensive fireproof safe with a lock to store it out of sight when it's not used. $10-20 should be adequate to make it clear a warrant is needed to search it unless there's a crime in progress, which there won't be if you use either of the methods above. Just write "may contain HIPAA documents" on it with a sharpie, and even police can't mess with it, let alone an RA.

(EDIT) I was corrected, HIPAA is not protected in a dorm typically. But a small safe placed in an unseen location may still be a deterrent for a forced seizure.

Bongs :) Sorry.

Get her wireless speakers like the JBL Pulse. I have them and they're pretty great and they have cool light patterns. I'm noticing now they came out with the Pulse 2's, but the first one is good.

Who says they're better? I'm pretty sure that objectively they're worse.

Also the ones that are $200 on Monster's site are these, which apparently are also blown out on bass. I mean those ones at least are a little more reasonably priced though.

Imaging being a Federal NCIS agent tasked with - in the middle of the shit storm - investigating Graham Spanier for the purposes of renewing his government security clearance....and finding absolutely nothing wrong.

Imagine being a liberal and investigating the absurdity of this case so much as to write a book on it.

I'm not surprised that none of you clowns are capable of recalling any of the facts of this case. Put down the bong and do some reading dipshit.

> because there's [...] a bunch of drunk idiots yelling WOOO!!! every thirty seconds.

This summarizes most of the problems with living in State College when you're more than 25 years old, as far as apartment renting, dining, etc. etc. See Among the Woo People (really). That said, I like it here alright.

No virus, no email from rescom, they were closed today so I'll get more info from them tomorrow. My suitemate, whose router I set up last year, also lost his access, so I am inclined to believe that it was router related.

My router was (same settings as past three years), broadcasting an SSID, on the default channel (6), had NAT and DHCP service enabled, and was using the cloned MAC address from my computer (so they couldn't compare the MAC to a list of routers' MAC). I have an ethernet cable plugged in from my assigned jack to the WAN port on the router. No other cables besides power cord.

My router is a Medialink, which isn't a big brand so I don't think any firmware solutions can help me

The most common idea is for me to clone my computer's MAC address but change the last digit, but I don't see any reason why that would work over me just cloning the entire address like I am now.

Also Rutgers is going through a similar situation right now

This was another link in /r/Netsec I browsed through, although it is 4 years old
