You could always hook up an antenna for sports and locals and buy a cheap digital converter box to use as a DVR (it's what I do). My indoor antenna gets me 50 channels and costs me $0/month.
This is the indoor antenna that I use:

It gets better reception than my Mohu Leaf and cost less too.
This is the converter box that I use as a DVR:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MF9X5V9/ref=sspa_mw_detail_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has a built in EPG to let you know what's on and what's coming up, functions as a basic DVR, and does not require any sort of subscription to use.
For a one time cost of about $65 total you can have your local channels, sports, news, and a DVR without having to pay a monthly fee.
You can probably force the update through the app store...
