It's not a massive powerhouse, but the Samsung Galaxy A70 is a great phone. Bought it for the wife over the summer. 128GB storage, 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 675 (?), decent triple camera setup, 4500MaH battery, and a massive 6.7" screen at 20:9 ratio. She games reasonably heavily on it, and still comes out with 10-20% left per day. She's been amazingly happy with it, and even I'm thinking about it. We're also US with T-Mobile, and it has all the needed bands for good 4G LTE coverage. It is the Latin America version (A705M), and probably about $325 now. It should come with a free 128GB microSD card as well.

Highly recommend watching Flossy Carter's review. Solid and he's from NY I believe so he knows how it works here stateside.

I'm going to attach a list of phones after this I would recommend. However there's one that isn't on the list because it's normally $299 but right now is on sale for $179. So I'm putting that one at the top here.

  • Asus Zenfone 2 | Amazon listing | Specs |

  • Huawei Honor 5X | Amazon listing | Specs

The Honor 5X is the weakest option (I'm still counting the Nexus in the list, but since you're already looking at it, it would be redundant to link it), but it's also the cheapest, and it has the best build quality. The largest con is (subjectively) the software skin.

I believe the Zenfone 2 is more powerful than the Nexus 5X (x86 (the Zenfone uses an Intel processor) vs ARM processor architectures is a frustrating comparison for me to try and do, but the Snapdragon 808 (used in the Nexus) is a bit...lackluster), and it has a larger screen/a lot more storage/RAM, but it doesn't have the largest amount of developer support, and the software is (again subjectively) relatively bad.

Unless you're looking to save money, I'd say skip the Honor 5X, it was listed mostly for price. If you want a larger screen and better performance on paper (as well as an SD card slot), get the Zenfone 2. If you want stock Android, fast updates, and solid root/ROM/developer support, get the Nexus 5X.

The motorola Motto G7 Power is one of the best phones out there for battery life. It comes with Android 9 (released Feb this year, so it's a new-ish phone), 64GB of space, allows for MicroSD card up to 1 TB, and 4GB ram so it's not slow. Camera's 12 MP so it's not bad. It has the 3 MM headphone jack and comes with that Google Pixel feature of call screening by their Google Assistant AI. This is one of the top 10 phones for battery life and it has been ranked in the top 3 in some places that do battery reviews. I personally get about 4 days off of it with my use on a full 100% charge and I use it a lot. MAKE SURE TO CALL YOUR CARRIER AND CONFIRM THAT THIS PHONE IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR NETWORK, FIRST!!

It's on sale for $164 now, but I bought it back when it was like $190. For me, the phone, screen protectors a new case, and shipping all came out to about $220 bucks. It wasn't bad for such a great phone. This is easily one the most underrated phones out there.

Here's the link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Unlocked-Smartphone-International-XT1955-2/dp/B07V682K4N/ref=asc_df_B07V682K4N/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366431064872&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17407746574009368205&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9051526&hvtargid=pla-805914209943&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=77006300780&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366431064872&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17407746574009368205&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9051526&hvtargid=pla-805914209943

Looking at the selection of off-contract phones on AT&T... Honestly, almost all of them suck.

The only good option on there is HTC's Desire 610, but it is 170 bucks, with a 8MP camera, great front-facing speakers, Kitkat out of the box, 8+64GB storage.

I didn't mention this phone before because it's 4.7 inches, so just a tad bigger, but if you think she'd be fine with it, it's a great phone for the price. Here's the link to it:
http://www.att.com/cellphones/htc/desire-610-prepaid.html

Alternatively, you could just get an unlocked phone off of Amazon. You'd probably have to spend just under 200 bucks for a decent one though.

A fan favorite is the 4.5 inch Moto G (1st gen):
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M/

$180 for the 16GB version, but do note that this phone isn't 4G LTE capable. The 4G version will cost $200.
I personally wouldn't get the Moto G just because it has no microSD card slot.

Hey, thanks for your recommendation, seems like the G5+ and the ZenFone 3 Zoom are the two contenders for me! Is the G5+'s camera that much worse than the ZenFone 3 Zoom? It seems like everything else is better for the G5+, and I mean my OPO is 3 years old, so at this point any new phone will have a camera that's "good" by my standards anyways haha! For the G5+ I'll have to buy this one new on amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/Motorola-Moto-Plus-XT-Unlocked-Display/dp/B06XRKQSY7/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496333116&sr=8-3&keywords=moto+g5+plus), or if I go used, it'll be this one (https://www.amazon.ca/Motorola-Moto-Plus-5th-XT1687/dp/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496333172&sr=8-1&keywords=moto+g5+plus).

The used one is so much cheaper, and condition is "Like new", and it's fulfilled by Amazon, so I'm really tempted..

Thanks!

Hmmm good point I thought I did but I am getting a bit confused. The GSM arena site you sent has different LTE bands to this site here
https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/OMKZD/xiaomi-mi-a2-dual-sim-global-td-lte-64gb-m1804d2sg-xiaomi-wayne

This is phone that I ordered from Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FMPVBQR/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2GKOXTPZV7SMA&psc=1

I am specifically looking for B3 (1800 +) and B28 (700 APT) which are listed on the amazon site.

is there a way to verify which version they will ship? like how would I know the phone they sent me does really support these bands?

Thanks

EDIT:

read some of the questions and answers on Amazon, the model number for the device is M1804D2SG which is the same as the one in the link above so it should have the same frequency support and should work fine in Australia.

u/Charming_geek · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I've never spent more than $300 on a phone, so I'm won't be able to give you the best recommendation there, except to say the Moto Z Play looks like a solid choice for battery life. For storage, you MIGHT want to look at the Moto G5 plus - not quite as good battery, but it's only a few months old and has fast charging (which might help with the lower capacity battery) and is $299 for a 4GB RAM/64GB storage model (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MR2ZFBI/ref=twister_B01NCYZTP4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

What I WOULD say is that you might be able to save money if you guys are T-mobile, you might want to check out mintSim (https://www.mintsim.com/plans/). I use them and am pretty happy with their service. They use T-mobile towers (so very decent coverage), but you pay for your service upfront which saves you a bunch of cash. Currently got a deal for paying 3 months upfront, getting unlimited talk and text on all plans with either 2GB ($11.67/mo) 5GB ($16.67/mo) or 10GB ($20/mo) of data per month.

the [Sont xperia z5 compact] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Compact-Unlocked/dp/B01AUAOI7A/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484182435&sr=1-2&keywords=sony+xperia+z5+compact&linkCode=ll1&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=4b2eaea8928e7c1b5b43e60803169151) has a better battery life then the xperia x but not by much, where the xperia x has 2620 mah the z5 compact has 2700 mah. other phones with front facing speakers that has great battery life are 5 inches up. If you are looking into getting any above 5 inches, the best would be [zte axon 7] (https://www.amazon.com/ZTE-Axon-unlocked-smartphone-Warranty/dp/B01FUF1JKE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484182663&sr=1-2&keywords=zte+axon+7&linkCode=ll1&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=6e899b69d5dde882ee41d2c476123d94) at 5.5 inches, high end specs such as: snapdragon 820 processor, really good battery life of 3250 mah in comparison to the other phones mentioned here, expandable storage, android 6 os, 4gb ram, 20mp primary camera with a display of 2160pixels.

Hi there, I would probably recommend you the Samsung Galaxy A70. Will run all of those things well, has a crispy Super AMOLED display and some pretty decent camera which will work perfectly for social media. You can get it for $488 here:

https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-A70-Infinity-U-Smartphone-International/dp/B07RS512XL/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=samsung+a70&qid=1566201020&s=gateway&sr=8-4

u/TunakTun633 · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

First, the S7 and HTC are worth about the same amount of money, so the S7 is fosho a better bet than the HTC.

Second, the S7 is genuinely better than the S6 (and HTC 10), with leagues better battery life, but only if you get the Exynos variant. The one you get from US carriers has a Snapdragon, and is barely better. (In fact, it's slower than the S6!)

I'd make an effort to get one. Look at the below Amazon link.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Smartphone-International/dp/B01CJSF8IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485499389&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s7+international

The Exynos S7 is $500 new-and $410 used-on Amazon. That's Z Play money; there's no comparison if you're buying new. Whether you're buying new or used, the difference in price is $100. You're getting an amazingly better phone for it. It's also available on eBay and Swappa, and one will show up on Craigslist every now and then.

If, for whatever reason, you can't get the Exynos S7, get the Z Play. Read the DXOMark review-the camera's not bad, just a lot worse than what you're used to.

EDIT: To answer your question more directly, I had an S6 and got 3 hours of SOT. I had an Exynos S7 Edge and got 8 hours of SOT. Theoretically, I'd get 6.7 hours of SOT from a regular Exynos S7, which is waaaaay better than the S6. Most importantly, the radio drained the hell out of my S6's battery when I wasn't using it-this wasn't the case with my S7.

u/GENERIC_VULGARNESS · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Considering that you won't buy the gold version, I'd take a look at this. That's the cheapest I can find it for, although I've never seen this website before, so I can't say for sure if the phone is used/if the website can be trusted. I would recommend that, if you really want the HTC 10, you should wait until the next HTC U Ocean/HTC 11 is announced. Hopefully that will lead to a price drop. Otherwise, I would go for a OnePlus 3 or3T, or even a Galaxy S7 which can be found on [Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Smartphone-International/dp/B01CJSF8IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491357331&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s7+international) for $440 USD. Those will all be comparable to the HTC 10 in performance, if not better, and will be quite a bit easier to get a hold of. If you're going after the HTC 10 for sound quality, then check out the ZTE Axon 7, which goes for $400 USD.

I love the HTC 10, don't get me wrong, but it's awfully hard to find at that price point. For $600 CAD, you're better off going with one of the other phones listed.

u/jackarooh · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I can see that you don't like expensive phones, otherwise I would've recommended the Galaxy S7. I also uncommonly recommend to others any phone that is not made by a large manufacturer because I feel as they are the best. But, a brand named BLU has caught my eye recmently and I really like what I've seen of their phones.

Two that I'd recommend for you is the Life One X($150) or the Advance 5.0($60). I am unaware if a Advance 6.0 is coming soon, because I'm not as much of a phone geek as I used to be.

u/qualverse · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

> AMAZING at taking photos

yeah, not going to find that in anything ~$200
> one plus 2

looks like you're not shooting that high. this should do the trick, and only $150.

u/Paradise_Brunch · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Nokia 7.1 might be right up your alley.

It is part of android one program meaning it is basically Stock android. It also has hybrid SIM slot. Listed 222 Euros on Amazon Italy Though it is more expensive than A2 by quite a bit

Processor wise 7.1 is slightly inferior to Mi A2 (636 vs 660). Since you like to listen to music, you might want to reconsider A2 since it doesn't have headphone jack unless you have BT headphones.

Hope this helps.

u/Kevanness · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Moto G5 Plus is a good option if you get from Amazon Warehouse Deals, you can get it for $232. Just make sure you get the 64GB/4GB RAM model, and if you have any problems with it Amazon has a great return policy.

u/lytical · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Essential phone is pretty much today's version of the Nextbit. They're trying to produce a clean Android device that challenges the big manufacturers. They're also currently likely to get acquired themselves but in the meantime they're still supporting the device through updates: https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Phone-Unlocked-Display-Camera/dp/B074BWGRKH/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540216620&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=essential+phone&dpPl=1&dpID=41pchcdpyNL&ref=plSrch

You might be interested in the Blu Life One X. This website will help you make sure that the phone you choose will fully work with a given carrier (so your not having to check what bands they support).

Moto G would suit your need well.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M for 170 bucks with 3g and great battery life.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M or with an sd card slot and 4g LTE for 220 bucks. possibly has a negligble amount less battery because of the LTE.

u/Fraganade · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I have been thinking about this one as well, though it does not mention band 12 or 17 for LTE and AT&T seems to mainly use this. Would it matter?

Is this the one you got?

Essential Phone? not android one, but it's pretty much stock android. it's ~$520 (tax included, roughly 330 eur) here in Canada, but availability might be difficult where you live. You might be able to get amazon.com to ship to where you live

Nokia 7 Plus is exactly 400 euros I think, but I think the essential phone is a better buy

u/JackSpoons · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Essential Phone is currently $280. Same snapdragon as OnePlus 5, not amoled though.

Pixel 3a is $399 with $100 e-gift card. It's new but it's a mid-tier phone, so it's a bit slower than SD 835 phones. Great camera, oled screen, headphone jack, stereo speakers.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is also currently $399. It's tiny at 5 inches, but has SD 845, decent camera, no oled though. Also, the 5.7 inch XZ2 costs the same.

Phone size comparison.

If a small screen is really important, then the S7 (not edge) would be your only option that meets all your requirements.

It's on amazon for $380 but if you want RR you have to get the Exynos variant called "International Version", it's $490 for a new one and $400 for refurbished
