So my hair isn’t real thick like yours. I use Reuzel Green Medium on day one and then I add Murray’s Super Light on the following days on top of the Reuzel build up.

People say Murray’s Super Light isn’t a true Super Light, that it is more of a medium, but I definitely notice a difference between Reuzel Green and the Super Light if I use the Super Light alone.

This is the one I use (don’t buy the one without the Barber pole, it’s different). Murray's Super Light - Orange/Black 3 oz. (Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAA3Q0S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t5.2DbXF752K1

So, maybe try putting in the Murray’s Super Light first and see how it goes through your hair. It has a lot of shine, which might help make your hair not so dry looking. You could see how it does on it’s own, but I imagine it won’t have the hold you’re looking for by it’s self. So, after putting a little Murray’s Super Light or some other Light pomade in, try to put in the medium or heavy you already have and comb it through. It MIGHT go in easier and give you the hold you want with a wet look. I’ve never tried this since my hair isn’t thick.

You can also mix the light pomade with a heavier pomade and that might help it go in easier too.

Another thing you can try with the ones you’re having problems applying is to heat them up with a hair dryer so it’s as warm and thin as possible. Just rubbing it together with your hands might not be heating it up enough to get through your hair.

Trial and error! Hope some of that works!

Edit: I see you don’t want shine. 💩 Sorry! Perhaps those tips will work if you can find a lighter pomade with a matte finish, if that exists.

I recently decided to switch it up from my normal American Crew Fiber use and branched out to see what hair products really make my hair look great. I wear my hair pretty short, generally from a crew cut until my hair grows over the edges of my ears around 3 months after a haircut. I also have black hair and dandruff, so any product that doesn't flake is a big deal for me.

I recently bought XX. After 2 days wearing it, it's my favorite pomade to date. It applies pretty easily, adds good hold for layering, and a moderate shine.

Before that, I tried Lockhart's Authentic Hair Pomade and did not like the overpowering smell, the hold, or the greasy feeling it left on my hair.

I also tried Smooth Viking, a brand that is highly rated on Amazon. It dried too quickly, was a stronger hold than Medium, and left flakes in my hair.

Will definitely be trying X and their Nolde Forest pomades as well. Kudos, Mailroom Barber!

Can you post a photo of what you are after?

It seems like you want some extra volume but don't want it to be shiny and look like you have product in? If so I think a clay would be your best bet. There are lots of great clays out right now (they are very hot at the moment) but I am not sure what is available in the UK.

Based on what is available from Amazon in the UK I would say Reuzel Matte Clay would be worth a try (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reuzel-REUZEL-Clay-Matte-Pomade/dp/B01MY4V5V6/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1504640000&sr=8-4&keywords=reuzel) and if you want to try something from a smaller brewer BluMaan Cavalier Clay may be worth a try (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cavalier-Clay-BluMaan-2-5-74/dp/B01L9CTJSQ/ref=sr_1_16_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1504640020&sr=8-16&keywords=clay+pomade)

Both of these should provide some extra volume as well as a bit of control and hold. They will add some texture and will not look like you have product in your hair.

I have the perfecto razor and brush stand from Amazon Perfecto Deluxe Chrome Razor and Brush Stand - The Best Safety Razor Stand. This Will Prolong The Life Of Your Shaving Brush. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KO46CTA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WjD0xb5QE8EPT

The brush by itself is an omega 13522, and the brush in the stand is a maggard synthetic 22mm. That maggard is a great brush. The razor if you care is an ikon x3 slant.

I haven't personally tried Murray's, but everything I've heard about it seems like it isn't a joy to use. There are oil based pomades out there that are much easier to apply. I could be wrong, but it seems like you'd need to break down the pomade more into your hands before you apply it on your hair. Making sure you have a little moisture (possibly towel dried) may also contribute to a more pleasant application experience. Lastly, make sure to evenly comb the pomade into your hair. I noticed a lot of people on YouTube like to use a Denman Brush to evenly distribute the pomade before they actually style.

I love Reuzel. Honestly, I wouldn't let anyone else dictate what hair product I use. Is your girlfriend frequently shoving her nose into your hair? I don't understand how she could smell it so strongly...

Since the Reuzel is a waterbased high hold, high shine, and doesn't really set in "hard". It's pretty unique. Which is cool. but it's definitely one of the better ones... you could try something like [Shiner Gold's Psycho Hold] (https://www.amazon.com/Shiner-Gold-Psycho-Hold-Pomade/dp/B00M13MQYC/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1465717969&sr=1-1&keywords=shiner+gold+psycho+hold) but it's going to set in a little harder.

Well, when I jokingly said I got rained on and it dried...

I was thinking of this day, left image.

That day I was using London Grooming Clay. I always liked that clay for a light hold. But its probably too matte. If too much is used it kind of powders.... But I got rained on, and my hair didn't look half bad after if I do say so myself. (I stopped buying it though. It went from $15 to $23 overnight. Made me try other stuff)

But the look you're going for is more of a "Day 2" look. I think a lot of products would achieve that. Its just a matter of which one is best for your hair. I would probably use Hanz de Fuko Claymation because that is one of my favorites, and it got a little bit of wax to it.

Also, I didn't care for it because it wasn't matte enough for me. I thought it had too much of that Vaseline look... But if you have enough hair like the pic, and use a little of it, Nostalgic Clay might pull of that look ok.

I think that pic also has some intentional flyaways... so probably finish with hairspray of some kind of you want those to stay messy like that (But I don't use hairspray so I can't help there)

Before original i used this I thought it was pretty good, and very recently ive started using enigma which i think is an amazing prestyler

u/xXiDominateXx · 1 pointr/Pomade

Yeah I suppose that's a good point.

As far as tonics go there are definitely some dedicated pre styling thickening tonics such as the Label.M thickening tonic

I will second O'Douds. I also have medium length hair and just typically comb/brush it to the side and it looks amazing. It has a really natural shine to it.

Lockharte's line is good-

You really can't go wrong with Black and White though.

I use Giovanni. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0011DIXJU?pc_redir=1411852616&robot_redir=1

It's not that greasy. It washes out really easily. I don't use shampoo and it comes right out.
