I picked up my car last Thursday, and just got back from the Porsche World Roadshow (#PWRS) tonight. I'll update with more info when I'm not on mobile.
I'm now awake, and have edited this post extensively.

  • Dark Blue Metallic paint

Personal preference (I like the Sapphire Blue myself)

  • Standard 2-way seats

I chose the same, seat position doesn't get adjusted much, and my fiance likes the same seat position I do, we have same size legs but she has a shorter torso, so she only needs to adjust the mirrors. The steering wheel adjustment will be manual as well with this choice, electric with the 18-way.

  • Sub Alcantara for Agate Grey leather interior

This sort of changes the car, a large part of what the GTS is, is the Alcantara interior. The steering wheel is AMAZING, I drove a Boxter GTS with a leather wheel, and then a Cayman GTS with Alcantara, and it was so much nicer. You will also lose the GTS stitching on the headrest with this option.

  • Convenience Pkg

Should come standard on every car.

  • PDK (it was a long, tough decision not to get the manual)

Very tough decision, I've driven both and am glad I got the manual. I don't plan to do any compeditive racing, so the PDK being faster was a non issue. It will drive like an auto when you want it to, and the downshifts and throttole blips are amazing. The manual does a throttle blip rev match in sports+, it even holds rpm to ensure smoother up shifts. Heal toe nerds don't like it (it gets disabled when you disable PSM in Sports+ however) but I was never very good at heal toe, and no where near this consistant. love the feature on manual. Sports chrono, and wheel and a few other options cost more with PDK on the S, so you get a little bit better discount on the PDK with the GTS. I'm still happy with my manual.

  • Porsche Torque Vectoring

    Solid choice, its great.

  • Seat Ventilation

I REALLY wanted this, however it deletes the Alcatara seating, which will also delete the GTS stitching on the headrest (confirmed by those that ordered it). Thankfully the Alcantara breaths pretty well, and it wasn't that big of a deal. I chose Alcantara over seat vent, but I really wish they could have done a perforated Alcantara to achieve both.

  • Smoking Pkg (Dealer recommended it for the extra 12v, plus it looks better than a gaping hole)

Dealer is correct, and its free. Looks great. I ordered it as well.

  • Brushed aluminum interior Pkg in black
  • Brushed aluminum center console in black

I liked these options, and you can only get them on the 981 GTS currently it seems. Sadly I was too late to add them to my order (my build went lock in less than a week). On the bright side, the silver trim looks good with the Alcantara, and seems to break things up a bit in the interior.

  • Bose Surround Sound

Preference, I believe the bose are still paper. 2015 Standard is now the 9 speakers and 235 Watt output setup. Its decent but could use a bit more. Its not a very expensive option on its own in Porsche dollars. I got the standard, and its fine, but not good.

  • Matte black painted Carrera S wheels At $880

Get it, I did, they look fantastic. You also get the colored center crests included.

  • Infotainment Pkg - Without getting this package, will I still be able to connect my phone to make calls and stream
    music using bluetooth.

Bluetooth calling is included with the base system, you just don't get bluetooth audio streaming. There is an AUX jack though. This is one area where Porsche price gouges, and many complain about it, as you get USB/IPOD on $14000 cars standard. The Nav, while actually really good as far as current Auto offerings go, is still shit compared to a smart phone. Hopefully Android Auto will make its way into future Porsches. I just could not justify the price tag for what you get.
    Solutions: Griffin Technology BlueTrip AUX
    FiiO L8 Line Out Cable
This is the cleenest setup, suggested over at the planet-9.com forums.
    Pictured
Note: you will lose fidelity with BT audio streeming. The base sort of drops out. This is due to compression and is unavoidable.

  • ParkAssist w/ Camera

Those that have it say it will not pick up lower objects that can still hit your body work. Only really useful for walls that you can basically see anyway. The camera is nice, but not necessary if you've successfully parked without it for years then you're fine. For those buying Boxters, the rear visibility is shit, and they might like this option.

  • Power Steering Plus

I would stay away from this. You will not like this, and people you might sell your car to in the future may avoid your car because of it. You can not disable it. Some that have it say its not so bad, you could always ask to drive one with it to see for yourself.

  • Electronic Logbook

I believe you need the infotainment head unit, to get this option. So consider it very expensive for what it does.

    My car build: http://www.porsche.com/microsite/porsche-code/?c=/PFH2N6B7
I picked up some LED clear corner marker's at delivery. My dealer price matched suncoastparts.com, and installed them before it had the plate on it.
I requested my dealer not wash the car as to not introduce swirls to the paint. They might have done a fine job, but I've seen too many cars marred to hell from improper washing by dealerships. I've done a fair amount of auto detailing and been on detailing forums for a long time. Proper 2 bucket wash and detailed the car myself and it looks flawless.
The car is currently in my garage awaiting clear protection instillation (XPEL Ultimate). The paint on these cars seems to chip easy, and I plan on driving the crap out of my car, so it must be done.

I'll be posting my story in more detail, and impressions on the car when I get some pro photo's done by a photography friend of mine. But here's a sneek peak.

Now, you're young and that's fine, but flaunting it can come off poorly. You might strongly consider settings some goals before buying this car. I saved for over 4 years, bought a house, fully funded my retirement and maxed my ROTH IRA contributions, while waiting to hit my savings goals. I sold my truck and motorcycle a year ago and drove a 97 Geo Metro in preparation for this car. I'm currently 32 and that is still young, but I was able to hit all my goals and feel quite comfortable about my future. With my time I got to build hundreds of Cayman S's and then GTS's in the configuration. This let me really narrow things down to what options were worth getting, and ones I could do without and not compromise the cay for me in any way. Even before I settled on the Porsche, I had shopped hard for other cars, and nearly bought a Lotus Evora, but it would not have been a practical daily driver, though some make it work. I'm glad I waited as I ended up with a car that's much more special to me, and means a whole lot more.

Compound interest can work serious magic at your age, your older self will thank you for doing the smart thing. Car's will always improve, and there will always be the next big thing out there, but your only chance at investing young is now. I'm sure you have some retirement going, but check out /r/personalfinance to make sure your savings is on track and more tips to get you there if it isn't.

Best of luck with the car, I'm positive you will enjoy it.

Hey dude. Great video. You might also crosspost to /r/cars. I bet they'd dig it.

My wife and I do a YouTube car show called Crossthreaded. We subscribed and retweeted and facebooked it.

We're by no means experts, but two things you can really easily do:

  1. Grab a lavalier mic. The cheap (~$30), wired ones on Amazon really help get all the "room" out of your audio. We have two of these going into a H4N.

  2. Be a little more dynamic. If you talk to the camera exactly the same way that you'd talk normally to a friend, for some reason it looks wooden.

More shots of the car would have been good like the other poster said.

    Great work, though.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but RF is probably the easiest and most cost effective way.

This is the unit I purchased. It works well enough, the most important thing is to find a good clean frequency for it to operate. If you plug it into the center console port, it will auto-off/on with the car, as well. I have a desire to figure out how to intercept the input into the head unit from the 6-disc changer and split it over, but I know the Bose is much more difficult due to the optical platform and would require changing out almost or all of the audio system.

Ultrasonic pest repellents. Work like a charm. PM me if you want the links to what I use.

Edit: I've had multiple messages around this. I'm not affiliated with either of these brands (mods remove if appropriate) but I use two of them to maximize coverage:

  1. Ultrasonic Rodent Electronic Plugin Pest Repeller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015ILABZ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_GoUryb2TN496P

  2. Eco Defense Ultrasonic Pest Repeller - 6 Pack - Repels Mice, Rats, Roaches, Spiders, & Other Insects - Home Pest Control Solution https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K3A75SQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_lrUrybWJVWV8E

Those claim to repel spiders as well but that's a lie. However, they do an excellent job of keeping mice/rats at bay. I just bought one of each and put it in both ends of the garage. I'm sure you can find competing products that have higher ratings on Amazon but after the first one month where this stupid mouse ate through a Tomcat trap (it chewed through the plastic and ate the peanut butter. Avoided the trap mechanism. What a f'ing badass.), I went ultrasonic.

I may just get the six pack now and spread them around the house. For those suggesting cats, mice getting into the smallest of holes (smaller than a cat's paw) and climb railings to get away. This little bastard was on one of my cabinets up on the wall and put 8 feet between him and the cat.

These things are safe for pets and humans. The first one started making tiny buzzing sounds a few months in but I smacked it good and it went quiet again.

Edit2: My positive experience was for rodents (rat/mice). As I've said, these don't do much against spiders. There are spiders right outside my garage, outside the front door with in a 6-10 foot radius of these units. I doubt they'd also do much against roaches or ants. I mean roaches and spiders sense sound vibrations through hairs on their legs. They don't have a proper ear canal and ear drum like rodents do. That's my theory anyway. Go ask /r/science if you really want to know.

Yes, there is a manual called the Bentley Manual that shows you how to do EVERYTHING.

It costs $75 but will save you hundreds.

Besides that, there are forums that help out with everything. The best 986 forum is, well, 986forum.com.

A few years back I restored/fixed up a 87 924s. Without going into the details, I bought it for $2200, sold it after about a year for $2500 after having put probably $5000 into it. Finally sold it because I got tired of the what's going to break next feeling.

I suggest that you look at older Boxsters. Searching on cars.com I found quite a few in the sub-10k range. You may have to finance, but you will have a regular payment, and after a year you will still have a car that is worth ~8k. What got me with the 924 was every couple of months something would break that would take money and time to fix--averaged out a car payment would have been cheaper. The other plus side of the Boxster is that by virtue of being post 1996 it will have an odb2 port which makes diagnostics a whole lot easier. Also don't forget performance, a 88 944 had a 0-60 time of 8.5s, a 99 Boxster clocks in at 6.3s that is a very noticeable difference.

Two bits of wisdom from two different friends. When I told one guy about the 924 he told me, "you'll keep it until you get tired of fixing it," he'd recently sold a 68 mustang he'd had for years. Another guy told me (and I think this is true of almost any car unless you are a professional mechanic with a shop and lots of experience,) "it's cheaper to buy a car at a certain level of condition than it is to bring a car up to that level."

Beautiful car, and great photos!

Clear side markers are available here, and install in minutes.

Also, if you need to temporarily attach a front license plate when parking (e.g. street parking in VA cities), these work well.

Enjoy your new ride, and I hope the break-in period goes quickly!

Buy this and read it.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Used-911-Story-Edition/dp/0963172662

Then just get ready to search alot, do not be hasty to buy. When you do find one it must get a PPI from a highly recommended shop(I paid for 5 PPIs before I bought a 930). Then negotiate from there.

It's 50 year for 911, prices are a little inflated right now, and seem to be going higher at least for rest of year. After that hype its possible some of non-enthusiast that are turned on to 911 this year will wash out and drop the prices a bit, but don't bank on it. At this point I am not sure 20K is getting you a "nice clean driver" 911 unless it has huge miles already on it.

Go hangout on rennlist or pelican parts, and with the book I recommended you will get a good idea of what you are getting yourself into.

u/autisticlettuce · 3 pointsr/Porsche

This one:

https://www.amazon.com/Joes-Racing-32485-Quick-Inflator/dp/B00B9FJMAO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1469851117&sr=8-6&keywords=joe%27s+racing+tire

It's a little pricey at ~$60, but it's the last one you'll ever need. If you're like me and you're used to the cheap "pen" types, this one will blow your mind. Having the controlled fill and blow-off inline on the unit is super nice too.

keep the car waxed with a quality product such that road film rinses off with the wand.

use wand first, and keep some clean microfiber towers and a wash and wax product like this: https://www.amazon.com/Chemical-Guys-WAC_707RU_16-EcoSmart-RU-Waterless/dp/B00FSAV5LU/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1518820836&sr=1-4&keywords=chemical+guys+wash+wax+waterless

as your microfiber dry mist with the cleaner and you will clean, dry and wax in one step.

NEVER let that brush anywhere near you paint. You never know what kind of grit is on it from the people before you, and even the perfectly clean brush will swirl paint.

you can also get the car ceramic coated CQquartz opticoat etc which will keep dirt from sticking when you hit it with the wand.

or skip the booth entirely with https://www.autogeek.net/optimum-no-rinse-wash-and-wax.html

First, you should check /r/autodetailing

There's lots of options and everyone will have their favorites based on experience. One thing's for sure though, stop wiping down with ONLY water as that is probably making things worse other than getting some dirt and grime off. It makes the leather dry and prone to even more cracks. You need some sort of leather-specific PH-balanced cleaner and a conditioner to follow it.

My favorite value option that's easily sourced from your local Advance Auto/AutoZone is Lexol. Amazon has a kit that's pretty cheap for you to see if you like the results:
http://www.amazon.com/Lexol-907-Leather-Care-Kit/dp/B005H7DRQA

Gliptone is also another well-liked value option:
http://www.amazon.com/Gliptone-Leather-Care-Combination-Kit/dp/B003VV423G

There are other higher end brands like Leatherique and Leather Master, but the results just didn't feel it was worth the price difference.

As for the dashboard, avoid junk like Armor All. Go with something like Einszett Cockpit Premium: http://www.amazon.com/einszett-Cockpit-Premium-16-9-fl/dp/B0002Z2MZ4

Good brushes. Try both of these. First one to get inside, 2nd to get the surface.

It's tricky to install new rear speakers, but I would do that if were you. When you do that, you'll know if you need to re-wire the speakers, because the wire (iirc) just runs under the carpet in the interior. It'll be easy to add a new wire for the back speakers and you could probably just rip out the wire that is in there, or just leave it.

I installed these rear speakers in my '86 a few years ago and they sound great. Accessing those rear speakers is a pain, but it's not that bad. I didn't remove the rear windows, but I heard it's easier if you just remove the rear windows... but then you risk breaking them iirc. When I did it, it took me about 5 hours, but I was taking my time. I actually bought these speakers as front speakers initially, but they didn't fit in the front lol. I still need new front speakers, but my sound system is pretty decent as is.

I’ve been wanting to pick one of these up for a while now. My buddy has one and loves it, I just can’t bring myself to spend that much cash to be that lazy. Washing a car with a foam cannon and then not having to worry about drying seems pretty awesome though!

arent they clear from the factory? did you buy it used and someone replaced them with yellows? Are the bulbs yellow or the housing? If its just the bulb get clear bulbs - if its the housing does the housing have a film on it?

I LOVE IT!

u/DaPanda13 · 2 pointsr/Porsche

A good starting point, if you're really serious about the car, Get it to an Indy Porsche mechanic and do a PPI. Also, get this book while you are at it. It should have every major and known issue in it. Then check the maintenance and repair history; a good binder / folder full of receipts is a pretty good indicator. If anything is rebuilt, including the steel widebody, check for paper work.

In short: Check maintenance and repair history, compare it to the book, and if there is anything you are unsure of, get a PPI done and mechanic should tell you.

Edit: I wish I could help you more, but I don't own one. I researched into 80s 911 SC when I was looking for one, and above is what I learned.

u/MacNugget · 3 pointsr/Porsche

Peter Zimmerman's book, The Used 911 Story covers just about everything you want to know.
