Features:
I’ve tried a ton of brands in hopes of finding the perfect stylus for pad. I can tell you that the absolute best I’ve used is the Wacom Bamboo Solo (generation 4, not the previous models). Best by a long shot. Super smooth, super fast, and very comfortable even when playing for hours.
Here’s the down side. They have replaceable tips and I wear them out super quickly. So I’ve found that for me it’s worth buying replacement tips often, rather than using a shittier, but more durable stylus. That being said, I don’t like that this is the case, and would only recommend it if you don’t mind a semi regular (though cheap) price tag. Also it’s important to keep in mind that the first tip that comes with it seems to be crappier quality (just less durable) than the replacement tips, probably on purpose. Just don’t assume that the rate at which it wears out will be quite that short in general.
The next best thing for me is the Adonit Mark, but honestly it’s not even close. It’s very durable and solidly built (have never had to replace it), but it’s not nearly as smooth and my hand starts to get sore from the grip I use after a while.
The amazon brand carbon fiber mesh styluses (stylii??) are pretty crappy imo. The others I’ve tried from amazon and eBay are junk (both brand names and generic in bulk).
Buy a Bamboo Solo and see if you like it. If you LOVE it, you’ll happily deal with tip replacement. If you just like it, don’t bother and look elsewhere.
Hope this helps!!
EDIT: This is the one I’m talking about:
Wacom Bamboo Solo Stylus (4th Generation) in Blue / Ergonomic Touch Pen with Carbon Fiber Tip for Touchscreen Input Devices with Capacitive Touch-Technology like iPhone or iPad https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KKPBVYS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-J5-AbKXAW2EA
Replacement tips:
Wacom 6mm Carbon Replacement Nibs for 3rd Generation Bamboo Solo and Duo Stylus, 2 Pack (ACK20610) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XJRE7LE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mL5-AbP6QATNG
I currently use this one. So far, this has been my only stylus, but I absolutely love it. Let's you see the board easier when you move and depending on your screen size, diagonals become a lot easier. So far I've had this for about 4 months or so? Something like that. No signs of wearing out, but if you're rough with it then it will probably wear out pretty quickly. This is a spinoff of the Su-Pen, but it's a lot cheaper. In the end, you pretty much pay for what you get. I love it though and it just feels right since it's supposed to be the "official" PAD stylus.
If you can stretch your budget by $20, theres the Moto G, which is arguably one of the best phones under $200
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-GSM-Unlocked/dp/B00GWR36F6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393805146&sr=8-3&keywords=moto+g
If that is out of your budget, some carriers offer the phone for $100, but you would have to use their prepaid plans
Verizon
http://www.amazon.com/Moto-Verizon-Prepaid-Phone-Only/dp/B00HPP3QD6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1393805146&sr=8-6&keywords=moto+g
Boost Mobile (they share towers with Sprint)
http://www.amazon.com/Moto-Boost-Mobile-Prepaid-Phone/dp/B00HPP3VW2/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1393805146&sr=8-10&keywords=moto+g
if 8GB isn't enough, 16 is another $20. For a phone of your pricing, unless you can find a spectacular phone deal (I found an iPhone 4 for $100 on Craigslist) There aren't many options for a "good" phone (i.e s3, apple quality)
HTC also has the Desire 200 (White is more expensive, so i linked the black one)
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Desire-Black-Factory-Unlocked/dp/B00F21VZ7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393805484&sr=8-1&keywords=htc+desire+200
Both these phones have exceptional build quality for their pricing compared to others in this range, but if I had to pick one, I would choose the Moto G. There might be other phones around the same price and quality, but I find these two to be the "leaders of the pack"
Hope this helps you find a new phone!
Edit: The Moto G unlocked and the Desire 200 are both GSM and can fit your needs (T-Mobile)
http://www.amazon.com/The-Friendly-Swede-Micro-Knit-Capacitive/dp/B00E0GV9IC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1418129129&sr=8-2&keywords=friendly+swede&pebp=1418129134827
These are the ones I used before. They are cheap and they are fantastic, they are made of micro fiber material and they glide throught the screen. The customer service is also fantastic, they go the extra mile to make sure you are happy with the product.
If you are looking at something pricier, I picked a third generation bamboo stylus. The tip is made of a similar material as the friendly suede's stylus and the body is made of aluminum, giving it a very satysfying weight. Make sure it's the third generation, as the 1 and 2 generation use rubber tips that are not suitable for PAD.
Whatever you buy though, don't buy rubber tips styli. Make sure they are micro-fiber or some other similar material.
Galaxy s-pen master race reporting in~ It's not an option unless you're using a galaxy note of some sort, but it's easily the best stylus that I've found due to the way it functions. The fact that it works with a heavy-duty screen protector in place with zero fidelity loss makes it even better.
Outside of that, I personally find that pretty much every rubber/felt/plastic contact-type stylus is essentially interchangeable in terms of quality. So long as you replace them as they wear down, you should get a comparable level of performance even from cheapo generic rubber stylus like these.
My personal favorite has been Su-Pen Mini. Great weight and in-hand feel, also the tips (replaceable) are amazing. It's also frequently seen being used by popular JP PAD players.
This is the model I use currently: (http://www.amazon.com/Su-Pen-Stylus-Plated-iPhone-Nickel/dp/B00GI34FX6)
iPad mini - I use the elgato hd game capture card. Normally $179, but I got it on cyber-monday for $100. It can capture xbox, playstation, nintendo consoles, and also phones and tablets. Lots of options for record settings, including a delay feature, so you don't have to record the whole time, just the key moments. It has to be hooked up to a laptop or desktop, though, so lots of cords everywhere! yay!
It's definitely one of the pricier options out there, but imo, if you are going to do a lot of recording on multiple devices, it's totally worth the investment. If you've got the processing power and memory for it, it can give you an amazingly clear hd vid. The software for it is okay, but I use something else for editing.
I'm not affiliated or anything and this is purely anecdotal but I use this one. It's got a good bit of weight to it and you can see if you prefer mesh or disc.
I greatly prefer disc. I wore out 3 mesh ones within a few weeks before I tried disc and so far I've only broken 1 of those discs so I have 3 spare still.
I play pad a LOT. I'm getting close to 1 year of in game time and I'm currently rank 594. That's approaching shitbucket status of playing way too much to get that in that time so my poor stylus and disc has taken a damn beating but it's still going strong. I ended up moving the rubber grip up to the mesh end too so it's comfier to hold while using the disc side.
The only noticable wear is the black colour where I hold it the most is like bleached looking where the colour's faded from where I held it before I moved the rubber grip there. The coating on the pen clip thing's a bit pitted from it being against my sweaty betty hand so long too. It doesn't bother me though.
Maybe I've just gotten lucky with the discs I have but yeah, only broken 1 disc so far with very heavy useage in that time with that brand.
I've heard good things about SU pens but I have yet to try one. I'm going for a less expensive one first:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D5GWE8W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It should arrive soon so I can give more feedback then. I'd really like if this were the best stylus though.
http://www.amazon.com/Pazdora-Puzzle-Dragons-Su-pen-B201s-ppa/dp/B00E59TJ3Q/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410162215&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=pazdora+stylus
I like your goal then reward system. I will try it!
I play on separate devices. I originally played my alt account on my old smartphone, but then it broke so I bought a cheap replacement for $15. The price dropped down to $10 so I bought another one and started a second alt account. All you have to do is skip the registration and set it on WiFi mode and you have another device for almost nothing!
Edit: The price on it is not quite as good as when I bought it, but I'm sure you can find an adequate device for $10-20. Usually it is the prepaid devices that are cheap to buy. Just make sure there is a way to bypass registering the device and use WiFi only :)
I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the amPen microfiber tip styli, and the tips are replaceable which is very cost-effective. The longer pen gives a better balance imo but the shorter one works great as well. The longer one also includes a (weird and sometimes unreliable) super-fine tip.
link: http://www.amazon.com/amPen%C2%AE-Stylus-iPhone-Galaxy-Interchangeable/dp/B015F2PCQ4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00
I owned a first generation Su-Pen, and the Bamboo Solo 3 (my personal favorite), along with some crappy ones. I do believe all of these are compatible with all capacitive touch screens (basically all modern devices). I can personally confirm it works on an LG Volt, OnePlus 2, Nexus 6p, and iPhone 5s, and have no reason to believe it wouldn't work on any other phone.
I recommend definitely getting a carbon-fiber mesh tip kind (like Su-Pen and the Solo). The rubbery tipped ones always dropped orbs for me, and don't give good enough tactile feedback imo - the mesh ones tend to be pretty rigid, with only a bit of give, while the rubber ones are like small balloons with a lot of slack.
The newest Su-Pens have customizable art, metal bodies, replaceable tips, and a cap. (the old one had a rubber body that eventually started leaving black marks on my hand, and no cap to protect tip so it started fraying). It costs upwards of 30 bucks though, and reminds me of erm... another type of toy.
The Solo 3 is around 10-20 bucks, has a cap, and a replaceable tip. It's shorter than the new Su-Pen (I think. This one is ~5 inches or 13cm). I got a 2-pack of replaceable tips a long time ago for 5 bucks, but now it's like 15, so no longer as price-efficient. The cap doesn't actually stay on the back of the pen, that's my only complaint. I recommend this over other generations, including the newer one. I still currently use this, I have one that's about a year old, still going strong, and I have a back-up pen and 2 replacement tips still.
Yep, I see that grid pattern of smudges on both tablets I play PAD on.
LPT: Buy a microfiber cloth to wipe your screen. It works better than alcohol or wet wipes to clean off the skin oil that gets left on the screen. Plus, it's safer since you don't expose your device to water or caustic cleaning solvents. Here's an example of microfiber cloth: https://www.amazon.com/Pack-MagicFiber-Microfiber-Cleaning-Cloths/dp/B0050R67U0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1488223830&sr=8-4&keywords=microfiber+cloth
There's cheaper ones at Walmart or similar stores, as you don't really need one that's labeled for computer screens (that's just marketing so they can sell you a piece that's 1/4 the size of a normal cleaning rag for 2x the price).
I tried half a dozen different styluses when I first got into pad and found that my favorite by far was the amPen. It has the woven metallic tip that never sticks like many of the cloth or rubber fiber ones do, and it is extremely light, unlike many of the other metallic tip styluses I tried.
It's been a few years, so perhaps they've improved, but I found that the friendly swede products worked amazing for awhile but eventually the tip would start sticking, no longer sliding smoothly along the glass. I know you can try to clean them off, but it ended up being too high maintenance, so I switched to the woven metallic type, which doesn't appear to have a similar problem.
I have actually 2 stylus that I use, both of which i recommend highly.
Lynktec's Truglide
http://www.lynktec.com/Fine-Tip-Fiber-Stylus-TruGlide-Pro-p/lttg-0005.htm
At $15(sometimes at $10 when they have sales/promo), lynktec's truglide pro is very affordable and fast. this is the stylus i use for speed farming, and multipurpose use. the tip is of a rigid micro fibre head, so you dont need to press the stylus down to make contact, hence smooth and fast navigation. Great for ranking dungeons where speed matters.
Su-Pen mini
https://www.amazon.com/Su-Pen-Stylus-Plated-iPhone-Nickel/dp/B00GI34FX6/ref=lp_8418750011_1_4?srs=8418750011&ie=UTF8&qid=1483508613&sr=8-4
$36++, on the pricier side of things, the stylus that every japanese pad player uses pretty much. this stylus have more traction than the lynktec, I actually move slower with the su-pen, but in exchange for that, this is a very precise and accurate stylus. I use it when I need to play my ronove teams or combo teams. The head is a soft microfibre head, you kinda need to press the stylus down slightly for contact. Slight traction, slower but precise, good for difficult dungeons where you need to pay attention.
i've gone thru at least 10 stylus brands, and these 2 are the best for me so far. I highly recommend these.
ps: i hate adonit jot pro with a passion because that disc gimmick scratched my previous iphone screen since I dislike using those screen protectors... Do not consider adonit jot pros unless you use screen protectors. When in doubt, always get stylus with microfibre heads.
I've been using the Wacom Gen 3 Stylus Solo (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Windows-tablets-Samsung/dp/B00M9B2OIO/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1450510629&sr=1-2&keywords=bamboo+stylus), and I'm pretty happy with it. It has a carbon fiber tip, so it doesn't stick to my screen like I've had other styli with rubber tips do. The tip is also replaceable, so if the tip does break, you can keep using the stylus with a quick switch. If you prefer the dual stylus/pen option, they have one with a pen cart attached (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-ballpoint-Windows-tablets-Samsung/dp/B00M9B2J7A/ref=pd_sim_147_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=21ffSeqHGHL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1XQ3WMV3E7CA901JDHXA).
This is the stylus I use:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008MOHLVC?pc_redir=1408029108&robot_redir=1
The hybrid tip is very smooth on the screen. In fact, I was slipping off the screen when I first used it :p. The stylus is much better than the thumb when you get comfortable with it!
Using a stylus makes playing much easier for me because I can see the whole board while I manipulate orbs.
Its a bit pricey but I figure I've thrown more stones at this game because I wasn't able to see where I was going and died. It's worth the investment for me.
I recommend it to people who want to use diagonal movements more consistently, increase board awareness, or have really fat fingers! :p
I use a SuPen Mini and love it.
https://www.amazon.com/Stylus-Plated-iPhone-touch-Nickel/dp/B00GI34FX6
It definitely helps for extremely hard dungeons. Day to day, I don't use it as much.
I use this one on my Nexus 7. Tip is kinda big, but seems like reviewers like it just fine for their phones.
I use the Bamboo Stylus Solo (gen 3) its amazing, light weight and it's tip is carbon fiber so its really smooth and fast. You can get them at best buy, but they are exactly 20 dollars so I don't know if you want to do that. My experiences with the rubber tips are pretty bad though
Edit: This is the stylus if you're interested
http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Stylus-Kindle-Samsung/dp/B00M9B2OIO/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1416492511&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=bamboo+solo
I am fairly new to stylus play, so I'm not the very best critic. I also really like the visibility. Watching some streams I see people ask what stylus to use often enough, and su-pen and meko get recommended a lot. I think su-pen a bit more maybe.
I bought the meko because I thought it was a good deal and I really like it, just can't compare it to the su-pen as I haven't tried one.
This is what I recently purchased: http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Stylus-Styli-Bundle-Replaceable/dp/B00N1BRWLA
https://www.amazon.com/MEKO-Precision-Stylus-Bundle-Replaceable/dp/B00N1BRWLA
I use this thing. Great value. I keep one at home near the bed, for late night padding, and one on me when im out and about.
The option to switch from disc to mesh tip is great too. You get 4 disc and 2 mesh tips that also come with the box.
I use disc for solving quickly, but mesh tip for lazy farming.
one gripe i have is that when you put the cap on the mesh portion, and you screw off the cap, sometimes the mesh tip goes with the cap.
Otherwise great stylus. Mesh tip lasts extremely long, havent had to replace it. Disc is lasting a while too, for 5 months of padding I havent had to replace either tip.
I finally bought one of these last week: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MOHLVC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's much smoother and the pen doesn't need to be nearly vertical in order to work like the regular rubber tip ones. I would definitely suggest a knit/microfiber one, just like everyone else seems to be recommending.
I'm using this - it comes with two stylus. Primary reason for buying it was because it retracted so you could take it around with you without damaging the head. Very nice and much better than those with a rubber head.
For padding, my go to stylus and the one I'll recommend to everyone is this one: http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-Retractable-Touchscreen-Smartphones/dp/B007FXMOV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457046908&sr=8-1&keywords=stylus+arcadia
Works on almost all phones, isn't overly sensitive, stays connected, and will last at least a few months. All my friends who've tried mine have gone on to buy one themselves, and it actually works better than even the Wacom Bamboo stylus that I've owned before.
The downside is, because of the relatively large tip, taking notes is probably not going to be very feasible.

That's a two pack that comes with extra tips. i LOVE the thin side
I really like This one
but also have These which are also rather nice
and bought These for the wife as a REALLY CHEAP decent alternative.
This is the PAD Su-pen but as you can see it's pretty pricey.
This is the one I was saying, amPen Hybrid Stylus.
http://www.amazon.com/Stylus-amPen-Hybrid-Interchangeable-Feature/dp/B008MOHLVC/
Get him a PAD su-pen! It's arguably the best stylus out for playing PAD.
EDIT: http://www.amazon.com/Pazdora-Puzzle-Dragons-Su-Pen-iPhone/dp/B00E59TJ3Q
HERE the micro fiber tips are amazing and i have been using it for like 4 or 5 months and had no issues with ti wearing down or sticking other than when my screen has stuff on it.
i use these, and i they're amazing.
I recommend any micro-knit stylus. I have Trent Arcadia stylus as well as that anal bead PAD pen.
Trent Arcadia: $11 for two. Clickable, so you won't have to worry about damaging the tip. Glides VERY smoothly across your screen. Feels durable.
Anal bead PAD pen: $22 for only one. made of plastic, feels cheap. Also glides smoothly across your screen. Doesn't have any method to protect the micro-fiber tip. seems overrated simply because it has pad design.
A single stylus shouldn't cost above $10.
Try Trent Arcadia:

i heard that this one is really good
Thumb day-to-day, stylus for 7x6 and ranking dungeons.
I use this stylus and it's by far the best I've tried: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N1BRWLA. The XM tournament will be crown #15 for me, and I can tell you this makes crowning significantly easier than with any other stylus or using your finger. YMMV of course but I couldn't imagine playing without this thing.
No joking: this
High ranking players all support the SuPen, for which the official PaD stylus is based off of.
I've owned about 4-5 styli. Rubber styli can ruin your screen (as it did to my Nexus 5) after long periods of play. The official PaD (and I suspect the SuPen as well) stylus is the best out of all the stylus I bought.
I've been thinking of purchasing this one because I've heard good things about microfiber styli and this one comes with 3 styli + 3 extra replacable nibs :3 http://www.amazon.com/Capacitive-Replaceable-Micro-Knit-Lanyards-Cleaning/dp/B00K4NVRRI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1410164446&sr=8-14&keywords=microfiber+stylus
Super cool PAD themed stylus only 18!
I have been playing for over 5 years now, so it is really hard for me to break the thumb habit. I bought a Su-Pen Stylus that was really nice, but I couldn't get used to it. I will say I was able to get ~6% in this last ranking, so thumb users aren't completely handicapped.
Edit
You can see all of the board, you can make combos way faster, and generally you learn how to get more combos. i used to hit a sold 5.2 combos with my finger, but now I hit 6.8 or 6.9 with my stylus. Also, u don't have to spend $30 on a pen, I got my for $13 on amazon. Here we go
Probably the same one as the one I'm using.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GI34IC4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Regular su-pen? This?.

I've been using this for a while. It has replacable tips so you don't have to buy a new stylus if your tip wears out. Also, since the tip is coated in some conductive fiber, it glides smoothly on your device.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E59TJ3Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's a touchscreen pen
http://www.amazon.com/Pazdora-Puzzle-Dragons-Su-Pen-iPhone/dp/B00E59TJ3Q
I bought this pack recently and I won't play PAD without it, now. It was a recommendation from TylerPAD

Holy shit I just had to google this. This pen looks like such a piece of shit. I replace my tips almost weekly. And it's $18.98. Holy shit the people who buy this are so fucking dumb. Replacement tips are almost $20 for a 2 pack.
I mean, I guess it's nothing for the whales who drop a grand on every godfest, but for the rest of us we'll buy higher quality, cheaper pens.

I got this one for Christmas:
https://www.amazon.com/Pazdora--Puzzle-Dragons-Su-Pen-iPhone/dp/B00E59TJ3Q/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467300337&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=pazudora+su+pen
and I really like it. I keep it in my pocket which isn't a great idea as I've almost broken it many times. But the tip has not worn out yet on me.
Su pen. Seriously if you've never used one it changes the game. If you're serious about pad GO BUY ONE!
http://www.amazon.com/Su-Pen-Stylus-Plated-iPhone-Nickel/dp/B00GI34FX6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450380259&sr=8-2&keywords=su+pen
This one not the anal beads ones.
I use a su-pen (https://www.amazon.com/Su-Pen-Stylus-Plated-iPhone-Nickel/dp/B00GI34FX6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483401286&sr=8-1&keywords=su+pen) and I love it. They're a bit more expensive, but I'm paranoid about using a mesh tip on my phone screen and I've seen horror pictures of scratched-up screens. I've also accidentally sent mine through the washer/dryer a few times and it's always worked fine after, for whatever that's worth (the fabric tip isn't ruined by water, basically).
