Sheldon Whitehouse interviewed on Colbert Report mentioned this quote from his own book, "On Virtues: Quotations and Insights to Live a Full, Honorable, and Truly American Life."
I think individual seasons go for around $10 on Amazon, though I've got the Martinis & Medicine collection which is an amazing buy if you turn out to really like the show.
IIRC I. F. Stone's thesis was that Socrates had actually fomented rebellion. There had been some sort of coup (or attempted coup) and there was speculation that he'd actually been an instigator.
I have no idea at this point whether that's actually plausible given the historical data, but it's interesting to contemplate.
Plato's account obviously lauds Socrates and makes his trial out to be pure persecution of free thought, but we should take that with a grain of salt, right?
you won't be dissappointed I promise.
If you do buy it, and are disappointed and can tell me exactly why, I will buy you a month of reddit gold.
if you buy it and are not disappointed I will upvote as many of your post and comments I possibly can.
Either way you win, buy it and love it!
I love this! We see so many poor translations, importantly, often omitting the second half...
From Robinson: “We step and do not step into the same rivers; we are and are not.” (B49a)
I'm With the Band has a great section about Zappa, and that West Coast scene back then. I recommend it for fans of that era of musicians.
Banksy didn't originate that quote either. He just re-publicized an age-old idea. Much like everything he does.
You should read this book some time. Published in 1989 and says the same thing as the Banksy quote. And chances are, somebody else said it before then too...but we can safely assume that they weren't some sensationalized graffiti artist.
I'm a huge fan of the Hays translation. Much easier reading.

The only time that happens is when the military allows the people to storm the established regime - almost always because the established regime didn't give the military leaders enough money. Typical people cannot, have not, and will never destroy a standing state army.
Relevant CGP Grey video for clarity, but honestly the book Dictator's Handbook is much more thorough.
I absolutely agree that skepticism, when it's based on empirical evidence, is a healthy and fundamental part of the scientific method. But the problem I have in this regard as it relates to climate change, is that much of the "skepticism" I have seen is almost completely devoid of empirical evidence.
As an aside, have you read Seeing Further? It sounds like you would enjoy it.
Is that these ??
I hate to go on and on, but I love those shots and its what Im after taking.
Edit; grammar.
Why are you guys acting like I'm the first one to come up with the idea that Alexander the Great wasn't so great? There's been many authors that have taken a skeptical look at the historical dick-riding that Alexander has gotten.
Keep believing that bullshit propaganda. There's not one shred of evidence that Che Guevara executed any homosexuals. This is why people need to read and enlighten themselves.
Edit: For anyone that wants to learn more about Che, I highly recommend Jon Lee Anderson's book, which is probably the best researched and balanced biography out there.
"War of the Currents" is a good read (Edison vs Tesla), and if you like the history of the early days of electricity, "Draw the lightning down" is one of the most fascinating boks I have ever read on any subject...

The best book on this subject is by Richard Hofstadter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006LSVB1M
Greek.
Epicureanism is the first modern way of thinking about the world. It's worth a lot of further study. He had an enormous influence on the development of the modern world.
If you want to read more, The Swerve by Greenblatt is a good if somewhat hyperbolic introduction.
Her book, Yes Please, is great. I listened to the audiobook, which added a lot to the experience for me
Original content shop by me, however the source of the quote is from Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. My first time posting, so I hope I can share some quotes from my collection with everyone here!
Edit: I smoothed out the text in this image and may repost.
