Hey there! I think I can help answer most of these questions. However, if someone else knows more about me or sees I said something that's not true, please feel free to correct me!

Ok so,

In Conclusion: Since you only have xbox 360 wired instruments, I think your best option (regarding getting "up to date") is to get and play RB3 on your xbox 360. People here in this subreddit have said that RB3 is the best out of all the RB's. It also has a keyboard instrument which is not available in any other game. Unfortunately, I got rid of my X360 and so my only option was to get RB4, but you can still use your console and play a good game! Also, most of the DLC out right now also works on RB3 (Someone correct me if I'm mistaken!) ***Look at EDIT***
Also, if you have the xbox 360, you only have to switch disks and you'll have access to way more music games and songs exclusive to the games (RB1, 2, and 3, Guitar hero 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc., World Tour, RB Beatles, you get the idea.)

Well, hope that helps! If you have any other questions, let me know!

Edit: DLC info has been explained in this post's reply!
The blue yeti will not work on xbox. Mic selection is very limited on the the xbox side, and the only mics that I've found that actually work with direct usb input are the basic $5-$30 handheld style.
The harmonix forums may be gone officially, but you can still get to the main research thread on this topic: USB-XLR ADAPTERS THAT WORK IN RB4 (AND WHICH CONSOLES THEY WORK FOR)
From personal experience, the best option that has worked is actually just plugging in a mic to the controller using an xlr->4pole (you can make a custom cable for this pretty easily, otherwise you're probably going to be stuck with a low-quality $15 movo cable).
The other option that works very well is to get yourself some bandfuse adapters. These don't work quite as well, but they've been the best hard-wired alternative. I'm able to wire my mixer output into this, although grounding is definitely a concern (ground-isolators are a must if running from any powered source). It does work just fine though if you're running a dynamic mic's output into it with a standard XLR->3.5mm -- I use them just fine with AT2100usb, Samson q2u, and Shure SM58 outputs. The SM58 works best, but it's minimal difference.
Really wish the compatibility list was as good as PS4, but that's MS for you.
With respect to Xbox 360 instruments working on the Xbox One, you are thinking of the Mad Catz Legacy Game Adapter. You can get one here.
https://www.amazon.com/Mad-Catz-Rock-Band-Controller/dp/B01541ACLQ
Rock Band 4 (physical game disc) for the Xbox One previously came with said adapter but the original Rock Band 4 Band in the Box bundle for the Xbox One did not.
Nowadays, it is wise, as you said to buy Rock Band Rivals. That is an expansion to Rock Band 4 which contains a Rivals competitive mode and Rockudrama, a VH1-like storytelling career mode (separate from the existing Tour Mode already in Rock Band 4). You can purchase a digital copy of Rock Band 4 along with the Rivals expansion on the Xbox store (IIRC $60), or you can purchase different Rock Band Rivals bundles, including one with just a guitar and the game (along with the expansion) or one with a microphone, drum set, and the game (along with the expansion).
There is one more caveat though, and that's with the Legacy Adapter. The Legacy adapter only supports wireless instruments, and for the Xbox One, there currently isn't a way to use wired Xbox 360 instruments for the Xbox One. This includes Guitar Hero controllers like the Gibson Xplorer (Guitar Hero 2), and the Rock Band 1 instruments. However, the ION Drum Rocker and the Mad Catz MIDI Pro Adapter is now compatible with the Xbox One using the following adapter. This is important for really high-level drummers.
https://www.amazon.com/PDP-Rock-Band-Wired-Legacy-Adapter/dp/B01MDJWJH9/ref=pd_sim_63_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01MDJWJH9&pd_rd_r=V85A4CRWGYH39RCM59NX&pd_rd_w=P0QWw&pd_rd_wg=WISBa&psc=1&refRID=V85A4CRWGYH39RCM59NX
Therefore, if you wish to go the Xbox 360 route, you would have to buy the Legacy Adapter (first link), the Rock Band Rivals game (likely digitally), and then you can buy your 360 instruments. Otherwise, a full band bundle would also work. You can also combine legacy instruments and Xbox One instruments as well, although from experience the latency between them is different so you may run into issues here.
I hope this helps.
Talking about rock band 4 or older games? And for which console? $500 for a band in a box is a shit load of money for something that was available for 100€ just a few months ago on amazon.de. That was the rock band 4 band kit for xbox one, the playstation ones have been hard to find for a while now.
Anyway, they aren't making anymore of those instruments and no official announcement has been made on the matter. Basically you probably won't find new instruments or band kits anywhere for a price that isn't ridiculous. Even the simple dongle that makes you able to play RB4 with real drums that was $10 on US amazon just 6 months ago goes for 200€ on ebay and I've seen people actually buy them. It doesn't look good for rock band if it goes on like this.
My tip would be, IF you are on the xbox one, to go for the legacy adapter(postage was $10 to finland so pretty affordable) and try to score any used wireless guitar hero or rock band guitar from local marketplaces or second hand stores if they are a thing in your country. I suggest guitar hero guitars and any wireless rock band drum kit, a guitar hero drumkit will work too but I guess its not ideal for the 4 lane notes. This way with a bit of good luck you could get everything you need for under $100 + the older drums are actually better, new ones have a lot issues with double hits.
If you're on ps4, the same thing but you'll have to do a bit of research since I don't know that much about them, but I do know ps3 guitars and drums will work with ps4 too. All i know that ps3 guitars have a terrible input lag, atleast the 2 guitar hero les pauls I own.
Oh, and basically any older rock band or guitar hero usb mic will work on both consoles as well for vocals
2 Hexolight 3000's: http://www.amazon.com/HexoLight-3000-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B002Q86DFK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462488340&sr=8-1&keywords=hexolight+3000
If you have a surround sound system, these highly benefit from being placed right next to the subwoofer so they can sync up with the bass. I've seen some people place them on their entertainment system on the left and right sides of their TV, but I honestly don't know how they don't go blind with that arrangement. I like them at the bottom because they are pretty bright.
For the walls/ceiling/rest of the room, go with 1 of each of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Laser-Projector-Stage-Lights-Party-DJ-KTV-Room-R-G-Lighting-Sound-Activated-/111858164297?hash=item1a0b442249:g:NQgAAOSwZ1lWfLB7
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201479422553?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
It'll be about 40ish dollars for both of those combined. I like to put the LED Dome light towards the front of the room and the laser light off to the side shining up at the ceiling and walls. You can also add a strobe and fogger to this setup, but I personally don't prefer those as it makes it a little hard to see the notes on the screen.
link
and for those interested, pay attention to the amazon warehouse deals for this. this is their most popular e-kit, so a lot of them show up as used, with various issues, but mostly cosmetic ones.
the kit I ordered was $240 and listed as 'good' condition. they claimed the kit would have multiple minor blemishes, but outside of the box having a few dents, the kit appeared to be in pristine condition. (but ymmv)
it may seem like a good jump from the roughly $140 you'd pay for the stock kit with cymbals, but you end up getting a fully customizable kit you can setup in whatever way you want, and you have something that is actually build to be beat on.
also remember you'll need to buy the madcatz midi pro adapter (~$25) to get this working, and xbox users need to get the upcoming pdp adapter to get it to work with rb4. ($30) since I saved $60 on the set like I mentioned above, this sort of made the adapters free.
EDIT: amazon has a musical instrument promotion right now. MISAVE10 gets you 10% off this kit. not sure how long it'll last.
MIDI output refers to the electronic drum kit's ability to output signals via a MIDI cable. It's a standard in the music industry and really has nothing to do with video game consoles, but you'll need it for this scenario.
The connection looks like this:
http://cdn-data.motu.com/site/images/ultralite-mk3/midi-connections_01.gif
Ideally, any e-kit you choose would have that connection (technically there are workarounds, but if you're buying an e-kit anyway, just buy one that supports it). While most modern e-kits offer this form of output, some kits only offer it via a USB cable (which is not what you want).
Now, since video game consoles don't use MIDI connections for anything, that's where the RB3 MIDI Pro Adapter comes into play. Since you're on PS4, you'd need the adapter for PS3, which is here:
https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Rock-Band-MIDI-PRO-Adapter/dp/B0042B3EOM/
In addition to that adapter, you'd need a standard MIDI to MIDI cable, which can usually be purchased for a few bucks. The end result would be your e-kit -> MIDI cable -> RB3 MIDI Pro Adapter -> connected to the PS4.
Going back to you mentioning drum brains, that refers to the module that essentially ties an e-kit together. It's the computer (if you will) that processes all of the signals and sounds, and all of the pads and cymbals of your e-kit connect to it. Every e-kit will have a brain; generally, the more you pay for an e-kit, the nicer the module is and the more features it offers.
With the exception of the ION Drum Rocker (which was a specialized, stripped-down e-kit for use with Rock Band), no e-kits will natively support Rock Band, which is why you need the RB3 MIDI Pro Adapter.
If you want to be able to simulate playing with the hi-hat open and closed, be sure to buy an e-kit that will allow you to modify the MIDI triggers for such a scenario. You'd need one that allows you to map the MIDI trigger for the hi-hat when the pedal is up to match whatever you're using as the blue cymbal, and at the same time it needs to allow you to have a different MIDI trigger when the pedal is down to match the yellow cymbal. Furthermore, you'd need to have the pedal itself not act as a bass pedal, or it would break your combo every time.
Any legit electronic drum set will come with it's own "brain" with a MIDI output. You can then hook it up to a Rock Band MIDI adapter, the same one used for pro guitar (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2). I actually built an electronic drumset from used acoustic drums that I found at a pawn shop, and built a Megadrum DIY drum module for it and I have it hooked up to the rock band MIDI adapter. Works great for pro drums and is amazingly fun to play. It's still pretty expensive compared to something like the Ion. If you can piece together an electronic drumset and don't want to shell out the money for a nice brain and aren't able to build something like Megadrum, you can look for a cheaper trigger to MIDI interface to hook up your drum pads.
No problem! I hope you enjoy the drum set, setting it up shouldn't be that difficult but if you need any help at all feel free to PM me.
I myself use the 360 MIDI Adapter and it works like a charm. I bought it off of Amazon and it delivered fairly quick.
Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00409SOD2/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1502947703&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=midi+pro+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=41-GC3fP6yL&ref=plSrch
> Also does a real drum set connect to PS4 RB4 game? I would not mind spending more, and get a proper quality.
Yes. You need a PS3 MIDI Pro Adapter and a MIDI cable to be able to hook up an E-kit. Best to get one with standard MIDI out, not just USB MIDI, but it can be made to work with USB MIDI. The least expensive "decent" kit is the Alesis Nitro, $300 new, but people say the mesh head kits are much better, and also recommend looking for decent used kits to save money. There are many drum kit threads here you can read for more info.
Im on the same predicament, only that i've already have the ION from last gen, but i've always wnated to improve my drumset.
Im looking a couple of sets, but my apartment is not that big and also dont want to make a lot of noise, but one my goals is to take the drum experience further. The sets i got an eye on are these:
Alesis Nitro Mesh: https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Nitro-Electronic-Snare-Cymbals/dp/B07BW1XJGP/ref=pd_cp_267_1/142-3492387-8206218?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07BW1XJGP&pd_rd_r=70cc95cd-697d-4cb0-8356-f0d6fcc4365d&pd_rd_w=nJSw9&pd_rd_wg=s93xL&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=Z9QA2P70Q7CS7Z7HAE9J&psc=1&refRID=Z9QA2P70Q7CS7Z7HAE9J
Roland V (TD-1DMK): https://www.amazon.com/ROLAND-Electronic-Drum-Set-TD-1DMK/dp/B07HC2ZMN4/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_267_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=D9YP1V1YT394Q2VZ39N7
I'd like that you guys, with a vast experience in playing RB with an e-kit, could point wich one would you pick, with con's and pro's if possible.
Thanks!
Ok, just as a starting point and over budget at $349USD (assuming you're in the US):
https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-All-Mesh-Electronic-Connection-Included/dp/B07BW1XJGP/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1535763724&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=alesis+nitro&dpPl=1&dpID=41GsMgTa16L&ref=plSrch
You can probably get cheaper Alesis Nitro kits which are non-mesh and also start looking down the second hand path. I would say stretch and get a mesh kit because is quieter and worse case you can sell it for a small loss if you're that disappointed with the whole setup, which I doubt will happen. I reckon any person will improve 10% straight away with an ekit vs a toy kit because of better kick drum, responsiveness and adjustability of position of the kit. I spent heaps on the Alesis Surge Mesh never having players drums and only just started on Rock Band and about four months in I'm super happy and even spent more buying new drumsticks, double kick pedals and other stuff. I love it, and any mistakes when I play are now mine and not the equipment.
Is that too expensive or are you thinking something cheaper?
for the xbox 360 you can find a ion drum rocker brain on ebay
it would take the input from the intruments like a brain and convert it to an xbox 360 controller.
if your drumset has a midiout then https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2?th=1
my drumset doesnt actually have a midiout but has a printer like cable out
but i think it requires a drum brain to work. Like most kits would need, the ion one is a brain of its own and connects directly to the pads.
as I said before i had an ion drum rocker at some point so i just used that brain for my good kit up until i started just playing phase shift on pc.

look at this kit btw https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QNBZFTH/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_rfb
fucking godlike for the price
I can answer that first question for you. Amazon has a bundle that comes with the new blue Jaguar guitar, Rock Band 4 with a Rivals DLC code included, a mail-in coupon for a free microphone (while supplies last) and the 12 pre-order bonus songs. It's $89.99 or $71.99 if you have Amazon Prime. There's also the $199 band-in-a-box bundle ($159.99 with Prime) with all the new instruments from PDP plus Rock Band 4 with the Rivals DLC code and all 12 pre-order bonus songs.
IIRC, you can always find a cheap MIDI kit and use the RB3 MIDI Pro Adapter. I managed to find a kit all too similar to the ION Drum Rocker for only $50! And although it didn't have a bass pedal, I managed to create my own using a cymbal pad as well as the structure used to hold up the Guitar Hero drum kit absolutely free. If the kit doesn't work at first, you can make it work for sure using Bome's MIDI Translator too.
Yes, but I want to offer a specific detail about this that angers some people.
You can only be signed into one account per wireless legacy adapter and the wired legacy adapter only supports one controller anyway.
That is important if you have a sibling, significant other, or anyone else who wants to be on a different account at the same time with different Xbox 360 instruments. Only one of you can earn achievements, contribute xp, etc.
Replacement pedal deals
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00263ABOE/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used
Microphone that works for both PS4 and Xbox One
http://www.amazon.com/Wii-U-Microphone-Nintendo/dp/B009AFLXZM/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1453650810&sr=1-1&keywords=microphone+wii+u
Now, the question is if you are Xbox or PS family. Xbox One game + adapter hard to get under $80, PS4 you can find for $40.
So if you're PS4 it's $65+shipping. Most of the concerns that people have right now is exports and legacy dlc entitlements. RB3 Export works just fine(another $15 though). RB1 is rolling out and the other soon follows(except Beatles).
I would wait until all exports are out if the main set list is your concern and you're not willing to dump another $40 for DLC out of the gates. I'll also wait to see if any sweet band bundle deals comes out. The RB4 guitar is easily the best guitar made imo.
Although I play it daily, practicing those drums at least 30 minutes each day.
Yes that will also work, but you will additionally need the PDP Wired Legacy Adapter to connect the MIDI adapter to the XB1. There is a list of supported drums on the Amazon page for the MIDI adapter, and the same list is in the manual. But that list is old, and almost everything on it has been replaced with a newer version. Pretty much any drum kit with a standard 5-pin MIDI out should be fine.
Edit - Link to PDP adapter: https://www.amazon.com/PDP-Rock-Band-Wired-Legacy-Adapter/dp/B01MDJWJH9
The Wii U microphone isn't the cheapest you can get, but it's a very good USB mic for the price. It works perfectly on the Xbox, and I believe it will work on PS4 also.
Let's hope you're on PS4. XB1 uses are left in the wind atm.
If so, pick up a MIDI Pro Adapter NOW. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042B3EOM/
The Alesis Nitro kit is a very nice entry-level ekit for 300. Works like a champ on both consoles.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0187KO8X4
Only other thing you'd need is a MIDI cable.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000068NTU
This enhances your rock band experience 1000%
It sounds like you already have instruments from X360/PS3. If thats the case you don't need new instruments, just a legacy adapter. You can find them on Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Legacy-Game-Controller-Adapter/dp/B01541ACLQ
If you have wired instruments there is a wired legacy adapter being released soon by PDP.
If you don't have any instruments already then band-in-box rivals edition would probably be best. Some people tend to prefer legacy GH guitar controllers and RB drum controllers. Just my opinion :)
It's a bigger investment but it'll give you a more flawless experience while playing drums.
[This is the midi adapter] (https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Rock-Band-MIDI-PRO-3/dp/B0042B3EOM). You can plug any e-kit (electronic drum kit) into it, and use it to play Rock Band. I personally use [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Nitro-Kit-Electronic-Cymbals/dp/B0187KO8X4/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1496718032&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=alesis+nitro)
Are getting the newer instruments necessary? I'm more than willing to get the ones meant for Rock Band 4, but is it fully necessary?
I'm in the UK so I was planning on just buying this and this to get started.
Thanks for the help!
This is correct. I bought these two from Amazon US:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00409SOD2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDJWJH9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And this cable from UK:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EYB8KC6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The MIDI adapter came all sticky like it was covered in glue (despite being packaged as new), which seems common in the reviews which is a bit annoying, but since it came from the US( I'm in the UK) I couldn't be bothered returning it; works perfectly!
If you want to go super (ghetto) cheap for instruments, start searching thrift stores. Any wireless Rock Band or Guitar Hero guitar/drums will work with this adapter, and all USB microphones work. Guitars and mics are fairly common, but drums sets not so much. Compared to the Rivals band-in-a-box you're not saving a ton of money and risking janky used instruments, but it's not a bad option for a second guitar and extra mics you'll need to complete your band.
For music, look for (new) track packs for the Xbox 360. They come with codes to export the songs, and they carry over to the Xbox One. Some are available on Amazon for about $10 for ~20 songs. Used copies are a gamble since the code is likely redeemed, but if you can return them without issue (Gamestop), it may be worth a shot. If you have an Xbox 360, buy Rock Band Blitz (25 songs included for $15) and a (new or used) copy of RB3 (~$20 for the disc, $15 more to export 83 songs).
People seem to be having great success with the Alesis Nitro kit, which has native MIDI output, so all you need is the MIDI Pro adapter.
I'm personally using a RB2 kit until my financial situation is a bit more allowing. :p
Do you have an Xbox One or PS4? Its easier with a PS4 because you have to buy an Xbox wired adapter to play an e-kit in Rock Band 4
https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-DM6-Nitro-Kit-Eight-Piece/dp/B01ELETH4A/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523545678&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=el%3Bectronic+drum+set+alesis
This is a basic set which is pretty equivalent to the Ions
Thanks, your reply is super helpful.
So would you say that the gameplay on ps4 is actually worse due to the roll limit (Seems many users have issues with other bugs as well)?
>there's also a user-made adapter that doesn't suffer from the roll limit. Another $50 if you end up needing it.
I assume you are talking about this. Would that be a replacement for the adapter I would need anyway? Meaning I should buy that even if I go with a ps3, to give me the option to roll limitless on a ps4 in the future.
It depends if you're playing on the Xbox 360 or the Xbox One.
If you're playing on the Xbox 360, you don't need the receiver.
If you're playing on the Xbox One, you need a different receiver, which is super hard to find, this wired PDP Adatper:
https://www.amazon.com/PDP-Rock-Band-Wired-Legacy-Adapter/dp/B01MDJWJH9
The receiver you linked is for using wireless Xbox 360 instruments on the Xbox One.
Just to be clear this (https://www.amazon.com/PDP-Rock-Band-Wired-Legacy-Adapter/dp/B01MDJWJH9/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) is the PDP adapter. It only works with the MPA and Ions. Madcatz also made a legacy adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Legacy-Game-Controller-Adapter/dp/B01541ACLQ) that only works with wireless instruments. The RB3 stock kit works with the Madcatz one, not PDP. Just want to make sure you have the right adapter before getting a new kit :)
I bought this a while back, but returned it when I found a stage kit for sale.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002Q86DFK
It's cool, but the Stage kit is way better.
Any ekit with a midi-out port on the brain will work with the Midi Pro Adapter. The hitch is that many of the more inexpensive ekits have "midi-via-usb" ports that require a program running on a computer to convert the ekit's output to an input the Midi Pro Adapter can accept. If your midi-out port looks like this, you're good.
Once you have an ekit plugged into the MPA, it's as simple as setting the corresponding midi notes for a Rock Band config.
Also, if you're on Xbox One, you need the ridiculously expensive out-of-print legacy wired controller adapter to play with RB4. PS4 doesn't have this issue and can use the PS3 MPA just fine.
This is the go-to kit for those who just want to play RB
https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Nitro-Kit-Electronic-Cymbals/dp/B0187KO8X4/ref=sr_1_1/135-3473805-3460805?ie=UTF8&qid=1494712318&sr=8-1&keywords=alesis+nitro
You'll also need this
https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Rock-Band-MIDI-PRO-Adapter/dp/B0042B3EOM/ref=sr_1_2/140-0032164-8482739?ie=UTF8&qid=1494712411&sr=8-2&keywords=midi+pro+adapter
And this (shop around for cheaper prices)
https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Cable-Plugs-3-Feet-108532/dp/B009GUP5SW/ref=sr_1_13/130-7031847-3528741?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1494712464&sr=1-13&keywords=midi+to+midi+cable
Finding an ION might be difficult and more expensive. Probably easier using an e-kit like the one I posted above. Any e-kit with 5 pin midi out should work. Just find one in your price range and ask questions in here if you have any.
You can buy a few yourself for rather inexpensive prices on Amazon. eBay has good prices on some as well. Country 1 and 2 are more expensive though.

Rock Band Metal Track Pack
AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack
I skimmed the post, so I missed this:
> I've been using the RB2 kit with RB3 cymbals for years, really happy with it
Then use it. They went to pretty impressive lengths to make backwards compatibility possible in an era of consoles where both companies have either somewhat ignored or actively tried to prevent the use of last-gen controllers. Unless they're falling apart on you, stick with what you know and like.
If you're on Xbox, you need the Legacy Adapter. If you're on Playstation, you don't need anything but the Bluetooth dongle.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01541ACLQ/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
It's definitely still available, unlike something I'd want, a TAC ps2 to ps3 guitar adapter because the gh2 guitar is really good.
In that case, save up a few bucks and buy a nitro mesh kit. A million times better than a rb kit, if you even find one.
Then you just need the midi adapter and a midi cable

>1 https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Rock-Band-Midi-PRO-Adapter/dp/B00409SOD2 dude they are 20 bucks used on Amazon, don't be ridiculous. Unless VAT is 100%, which it is not... Amazon is a better deal.
You can get a second guitar from Amazon. It's red and looks pretty sweet (in my opinion). It's $70. https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Fender-Jaguar-Guitar-Controller/dp/B01I71VESU
No way to get a standalone drum kit, though
If you have this Rock Band Pro adaptor and an E-kit that outputs this kind of midi port then yes, you're good to go. The problem is simply many newer E-kits have moved on in favor of USB connections for output which will not work on the PS4 version of Rock Band 4.
If Wireless, yes, however you will need this too - https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Legacy-Game-Controller-Adapter/dp/B01541ACLQ
Wired guitars will not work.
Here is a good compatibility chart.
Do NOT get the stock drums. Completely useless for any competent player. I even got a replacement kit and it was worse than the last. The go-to kit around here is the Alesis Nitro kit. I havent used it yet but a ton of people seem to love them and I plan on getting them next month.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0187KO8X4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1G6BEO07EYOG4&coliid=I1U40LDZ2OC85B&psc=1
If you want to get into RB4, get an Xbox One. You're in luck since you've already exported everything into RB3. It's $15 to import 3 into 4. If you missed out on exporting Green Day RB, all of those songs are still available as DLC.
As for instruments, check thrift stores, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc. If you can find the wireless 360 instruments, you can get an adapter for them to use them on the Xbox one, but It's a bit pricier than it used to be. Xbox One controllers are a bit harder to come by, but if you're lucky you can find them cheap.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01MDJWJH9/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new
That’s your best option I’m afraid.
I'm not on RB4 yet, so someone correct me if my info is outdated. That drum should work just fine. The connector you need is the Rockband MIDI Pro-Adapter found Here for X-box and Here for Playstation. It's pretty much impossible to find the adapter other than online. In addition you will need to purchase a short MIDI to MIDI cable as seen here (these are pretty easy to find at any music store, but you'll pay the usual 400% markup). Total cost is somewhere around $25-$45 to get you up and running.
Assuming it has a midi-out (which it looks like it does) all you need is a PS3 MIDI Pro Adapter and a MIDI cable.
PS4 Adapter: PlayStation 3 Rock Band 3 MIDI PRO - Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042B3EOM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aB14BbDAQJ3GC - $39.95
If you have an Xbox bad news is those are much harder to come by, but good news is you have rock band on an Xbox so your calibration should be top notch
Someone selling on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01MDJWJH9/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new tell your friends if they are willing to buy.
Hey, man... I am in exactly the same boat as you. Played RB on 360 (but still have all of my instruments, including the ION drums) and bought a PS4 when it launched. AMA!
I got back into RB a couple months ago and had to make the same decision as you, buy an xbone or start from scratch on PS4. I chose the latter.
However, I don't know if I would do it that way again or not.
What's the cost of a xbone at this point? $150 used and $250 new? How many songs is that if you just re-purchase on PS4? 75-150? Are there songs you really want to play, but never can again if you chose PS4? Do you play pro drums? To use the ION kit, you need the limited-run (and very expensive, $120+) wired adapter - and MIDI-Pro adapter. For wireless instruments, you need the wireless adapter from Amazon (for $15, if you're even considering an xbone at some point in the future, pick one up!). All of that cost can be offset and go towards re-buying songs if you stick to PS4.
So, you have to buy instruments either way... old PS2/PS3 guitars and drums 'work', but you need a dongle (receiver) to plug into the console. It's not like 360, where they work by themselves. There are a TON of guitars out there on ebay, FB Marketplace, craigslist, thrift shops, etc, but many/most do not have the dongle... and dongles are not universal. Just because you have one, doesn't mean that you can just buy any guitar/drums and they will work.
I will say this... I had to search to find a RB4 (non-Rivals) disc for PS4. PSN was running a "spend $100, get $15" promo, and so I bought $100 in cards and started to rebuild my catalog. It was painful. I had almost instant buyer's remorse knowing how much I was going to have to spend to get back some of the songs that I already own on 360.
Regardless, at this point, you're looking at an investment into the hundreds of dollars, either way, so be prepared for that. ;) That being said, I so glad to be back into it!
Yes. I bought it from Amazon two months ago, brand new sealed in box. It's only $6 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001KAN1VO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467177168&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=acdc+rock+band+live&dpPl=1&dpID=41q7y-a0MtL&ref=plSrch
Yes, it's available separately. You can buy it direct from our store http://store.madcatz.com and if you're in the US then it's also available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Band-Legacy-Game-Controller-Adapter/dp/B01541ACLQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450700061&sr=8-1&keywords=rock+band+4+legacy+adapter
I don't know your budget but for an entry level kit you should consider something like Alesis Nitro Kit | Electronic Drum Set with 8" Snare, 8" Toms, and 10" Cymbals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0187KO8X4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NBVgzbWXPQKW0
If they are the wireless ones then yes with a 360 Wireless adapter they work fine. If they are IONs or you use a Midi adapter you have to wait for the new Wired adapter from PDP to hit this fall. If you were a day 1 RB adopter and have a Wired RB1 drum set you're shit out of luck (like me!).
Ebay! There is always guitars under $100 and you can get good deals if youre really patient. You can also use 360 guitars (wireless only) with the Madcatz legacy adapter
Yup, hardware availability is an issue. That said, there are standalone guitars and usb mics available on Amazon and folks can download the Rivals bundle digitally. Drums are a bit harder to find but lots of people have found good deals on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or local thrift shops. Don't forget that a ton of legacy Rock Band hardware works with Rock Band Rivals (see rockband.com/compatibility).
It's not ideal, but it's still possible for new players to get in to Rock Band.
https://www.amazon.com/Alesis-DM6-USB-Kit-Eight-Piece/dp/B002C4SM5W
It shows the back of the drum brain as I have no idea about e kits I wanna make sure that the drum brain does or does not have that port. I'm assuming this does not based on what I see but I wanna make sure.
Thanks for the heads-up. Available in Canada too...
Mad Catz Rock Band 4 Wireless Fender Stratocaster Guitar Controller for Xbox One, Black - Black Edition
Amazon or ebay are good places to get it. I found that $299 is the usual price when I was looking at them.
$300 USD for a used ION kit? I'd just get an Alesis Nitro Kit instead.
You'll want the MPA if you do go that route as well as a small MIDI to MIDI cable.
https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Rock-Band-MIDI-PRO-3/dp/B0042B3EOM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549367856&sr=8-3&keywords=Midi+pro+adapter+ps4
If your kit has midi out, you're playing on PS4, and you have this thing you should be all set as far as I know.
If you're on XBOX, you can still do midi out into an old Guitar Hero kit but you won't get access to Pro drums.
(PS3 Adapter only works on Rock Band 4 in-game on PS4)
Other info:
For Nitro (if you go with it) the in-game notes Ride & Crash (Blue and Green cymbals) will be reversed. Not to worry the manual has guide on how to change them without just swapping cables.

Buy either new- back of the manual has a code for exporting the track pack into your digital library. Then, the songs will be entitled to your account. These codes can only be used once, so ensure you buy a brand new and sealed copy. The disc can also be used as a standalone, if you don't want to use the songs digitally (therefor you could buy used).
Yeah. It's going for $40 right now, cheaper than I thought. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01541ACLQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_MMmxCb10Q2BYP
Surprisingly, Amazon has them. Still 100 bucks though.
It has to pass through the midi interface before it can pass through usb. For that you need the xbox one legacy adapter and xbox 360 midi adapter. (Xbox one legacy adapters were made and sold in short supply and they probably won't come back. If you don't already have one then you should try playing your kit on rock band 3. You can get custom drum songs there too.)
Then you have to set your kit's pads and cymbals to the correct midi notes (using the drum brain), which is how Rock Band knows what gem you're trying to hit. Those numbers are in the manual for the midi adapter

I had heard of people who had just redeemed and it let them download. Given it is so cheap, I thought I'd give it a shot thinking that the account didn't see I owned it but when I tried to redeem, it told me I did own it already.
With that said, I should have an extra code at some point but before I give it away I am going to file a ticket with MS I suppose to see if they can fix it for me. If they can, then I'll give the extra away. If the fix is them removing it from my account so I can re...redeem the new code, then so be it.
If you're from the US, it seems like the cheapest option right now is to buy the Rock Band 4 Rivals Jaguar Bundle (Found here) and then buy the PDP Wired Legacy Adapter to use your electronic kit (Found here , but it seems to be out of stock currently).
Even if you don't play guitar, the bundle seems to be the cheapest way to buy the game for Xbox One currently, as there doesn't seem to be a standalone disc version of RB4 for Xbox One (closest there is comes with the Wireless Legacy Game Controller)
I personally use this MIDI Adapter- it's only $30:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00409SOD2
You need the Rock Band 3 MIDI Pro Adapter plus the PDP Wired Legacy Adapter to use your drum kit with Rock Band on an Xbox One. You also need a MIDI Cable to connect your DM7X drum brain to the the MIDI Pro Adapter.
