Hey there! Some ideas to ponder:

  1. I love the idea of mixing in some warmth in the kitchen with the stools to help tie things together, but I also love the clean lines in there. So maybe something like this in clear so you have the warm wood but it's not too obtrusive to the eye lines or something more like these to keep the black tones while still preserving some of the view.

  2. I would definitely try a more substantial bookcase in that corner, something along the lines of this standalone unit or a wall-mounted unit like this , depending on what fits your dimensions & budget. And for the chair, I think you're right to think leather. There are some classic textures and lines here that really blend well with the modern, so something with this style , although if you wanted to play up the mid century vibes of your couch, this chair in the sienna color would be awesome.

  3. For throw pillows, I usually look to tie in wall art colors. Since you don't have much (but I do recommend integrating some!), I would go with something relatively inexpensive for now to try out how much color you want to integrate. If you want to dip your toes in, introduce some color with a little pattern like this or this with lots of pattern but relatively neutral colors. I definitely think of throw pillows as a way to infuse some personality into a room, so make sure they feel like a good fit for you! I like Society6 because they're relatively inexpensive and easy to switch out if I'm jus not feeling something, but just beware that they tend to start pilling a bit after a year or two. And a helpful tip: always check to see if they're shipping a pillow or just the cover. You might have to order some pillow inserts on Amazon.

  4. Fiddle-leaf figs are the go-to potted tree for a lot of people, but I find them to be a bit finicky. I'd recommend a rubber tree or even amother-in-law tongue (also known as a snake plant, I believe). There are things like this all over Pinterest if you need some ideas for what will work best for you.

As far as the any other reccs, I'd just stress adding some textiles. A throw blanket on the couch (or chair!) and maybe a runner in the entryway.

All that being said, your place looks absolutely awesome and the transformation is GOALS.

    I hope this helps!

So, the table from the Nelson video is the size I was thinking. I had two ideas in mind, here is the first. The idea with this table being that I could build a "nook" to hold it so that it "sinks" into the wall or with the smaller version is flush with the wall when not in use. Or rolls away into a small closet like we saw in the initial video with the side wall storage: https://www.amazon.com/Linon-Space-Saver-Set-Table/dp/B002USULCM?ie=UTF8&ref_=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_cOjeqb0RGKZ53
The other idea I had was to use the table in the same way the Nelson video did, as a semi wall but instead of coming out length wise it would fold out width wise, or perhaps hide an extra window when folded up. For this the chairs would be an issue. The chairs would have to be incorporated into the design of the rest of the house and fold up or used in the seating area.
Edit: In this video (there's a lot of talking, it's a bit boring) but I love the stairs with storage and the way they did the double lofts. Also the ceiling in the kitchen that looks rustic but hides the electrical for the ceiling lights. The stair storage on this one and the lofts are really the best. I don't care about the down stairs lay out, but the lofts with the ceiling at that slant are lovely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPQ0B0Oukn8
I get what a V design is, but what is an L design?
Edit again: This is almost perfect in terms of livability for a family of 4. I would do the second loft space as the bedroom and have the living area be where the girls bedroom is. But the master loft has some storage and privacy, which I feel is a good idea ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YUE8ykfa7o

It's dissonant, and not in an eclectic sense. On one hand, old, worn books, rickety crates, antique stools, and vintage lamps; on the other hand, lots of "one decoration, please"-style decor -- the "Hearth & Home" cube (seriously, what is that doing there?) and the ultra-common Einstein thing are the most obvious offenders to me, but there's also the black globe from every Hobby Lobby-esque store in the country and the myriad unused bottles with corks in them.

Similarly, the stuff that conveys any kind of story or personality all seems to indicate a person whose main interest is Portland, and the stereotypes thereof -- Portland poster, Portland puzzle, growlers, fixie bike silhouette. Beyond the questionable taste of those choices (lookin' at you, fixie bike silhouette), it's also kind of weird that this space (a studio apartment) doesn't seem lived-in -- the decor seems pretty clearly tailored to guests. Another user in this thread mentioned that landlords illegally renting out apartments on Airbnb is a problem in Portland, and that seems like a reasonable explanation for what's happening with the decor here.

I know this seems like excessive criticism, and to be clear, there are some things I like -- the yellow theming around the TV is pretty great, and in all honesty, that lamp is pretty cool, assuming it provides decent light. But something felt off about the decor to me (and many others, I guess), and I'm just trying to put my finger on it.

Thank you for the explanation! I made a cynical assumption and I appreciate your patience with me. In the states I'm just used to people using token 'worldliness' to feel more sophisticated. Since Scandinavian culture/design is currently all the rage in the U.S. I got a nice irony boner out of this photo. My ignorance was fun while it lasted.

Though I have to admit I'm even worse than my fellow countrymen who just like Ikea. I'm currently reading this book and loving it http://www.amazon.com/Norwegian-Wood-Chopping-Stacking-Scandinavian/dp/1419717987/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457716639&sr=8-1&keywords=wood+stacking+book So the neat wood stack in this picture is my favorite part. I also really enjoyed 'Lillyhammer' on Netflix and am still bitter it was cancelled.

-I do realize that Finland has nothing to do with Ikea or that show.

-Though the only things that come to mind when I think of Finland is the famous quiet Stoicism of the people and your amazing resistance to the Russians in WWII. I'd love to visit someday and annoy the locals with my endless chatter.

This pictures reminds me of a book series that I just finished reading. A world has, for reasons uncovered in the book, undergone a very long draught and become a desert, with sand invading like in the picture. They are not long reads, nor are the difficult reads, just fun easy reading in an world that leaves lots of room for the imagination.

First is Sand by Hugh Howey (the 'omnibus' has all 3 books included)

And then a fan wrote a sequel called Dunes over Danvar (again this 'omnibus' includes all the parts). It is not 'fanfic' quality, it is actually written by Michael Bunker, who is well known and won some awards.

I would also recommend Charles MacPherson's "The Butler Speaks. I like how he takes a modern look at it and realizes that there are more ways to entertain than magnificent, opulent feasts like this one, but thinks you should still treat them with the same importance when it comes to treating your guests well.

Pretty cool, you can actually get LED fixtures that look very similar in appearance to these old-school incandescent bulbs, getting both the neat look and the energy efficiency. They look like this.

The windows have a IR reduction film on them which reduces 97% of the infrared light coming through... so the evening sun setting over the water doesn't bake the room.

They are also double-paned, and the inner pane is an ElectroChromic layer, which can provide rapid visible-light tint at the push of a button - perfect for when its's time for sleep or the sun is just too bright the next morning after a night at the bars.

But why use buttons? An Amazon Echo Dot built into a nook in the wall can communicate with a SmartThings hub in the small hand-carved-wood electronics cabinet (out of frame here) and not only activate the EC windows but also the motorized track on the wooden shutters outside - for those times when you do want total privacy. A simple voice command makes it happen. It even anticipates your needs with daily schedule settings so the soft morning light can wake you up by retracting the shutters and setting the EC glass to transparent each morning at dawn. A Nest thermostat keeps everything balmy or cozy depending on the time of day, or day of the week.

While you're in the bath, of course, the Dot will play your current Audible book from your Kindle collection over the built-in-ceiling speakers using its Bluetooth radio, or switch to that classical Pandora channel you've been cultivating for years when you're tired of the book and just want to rest.

Finally, the two small lights in the alcoves in the rear wall are actually multi-colored and dimmable wifi-connected LEDs, so they can flash various colors when different events happen, such as the local fruit-&-vegetable vendor bringing your semi-weekly order to your gate downstairs or getting a phone call from a particular person in your favorites list.

You live a comfortable life.

Tell them to get a better telescope. :P

It's just funny how photos in expensive, glamorous places like this always feature such dirt cheap telescopes.

u/SeleneNyx · 1 pointr/RoomPorn

That is soo cute. But that price. Yikes. 😓
So I went on Amazon and found a cuter one with a better price. The cupcake has a winky face, it's so adorable. 😊

So true. As if it weren't enough, one further advantage of windowless rooms is that they tend to be cheaper! Double win!

This may help you though. Might not be as impenetrable, but has the advantage that you can write on it!

Placing a tall bookcase or two in front of those pesky windows could be another solution.

irks me a wee bit too. I suggest to the guy this floor mat ( I even got the american link cos i'm handy). I have the carpet version, its pretty good, large enough too if you like rolling about a bit.

Came here to say this. Something like this is super easy and it's $50. I guess 80% of the budget went to the chair. :p
