Swords and sorcery and dwarves and elves has been done to death. Mixing it with pop culture references isn't going to change that.

You don't need to know anything about Max Payne 1 and 2, although characters from those games are mentioned and reappear and about 25% of the game takes place in that setting. But the writers do a good job of skimming over the important parts within the narrative.

A Steam download code is 30 dollars on Amazon.

The Steam download was missing a binkw32.dll file for me which is needed to play the game. If you download a demo of Spec Ops: The Line and then copy and paste the binkw32.dll file from it (should be in the main folder) to the Max Payne 3 main folder under Steam it should work like a charm (and is safer than downloading random stuff off the interwebs). Although I seem to be the only person who has ever had this problem, so who knows?

The negative reviews on Amazon are mostly about the difficulty level (and on normal this game can be absolutely BRUTAL, especially once enemies start wearing full tactical body armor). But of the five difficulty levels, two are easier than normal and if you die, you usually just start right back at the beginning of the fight with full health and all of your painkillers back. And if you keep dying, Rockstar will just keep adding painkillers to your starting supply until you get it right.
