Perhaps the most important and expensive is making sure you have a good computer or laptop that can handle streaming. Hopefully you or a friend in the scene can make that happen, 'cause that will be the biggest expense.

In terms of actual stream equipment, I'm going to assume you want the cheaper options:

  1. Capture Cards

  1. Microphone:

  1. Stream Software (Free):

For any kind of smash, even casually, it's more than definitely worth buying one. I was told this probably 100 times before I switched off nunchuck, and after a day or 2 of adjustment, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Even casually, the GameCube controller is the quintessential controller for all smash (64 included) and you should look into buying either a Smash 4 GC controller, or a GC Legacy controller (a new original GC controller). Make sure you don't buy 3rd party though, as they feel and play like literal ass and may turn you off GC controllers entirely. \

It is important to make sure any controller you buy is first party! I can't stress that enough! They shoulod have either a "Nintendo Gamecube" or smash ball on them, if they are black (unless they're made by a reputable customs maker) don't purchase them.

I feel like I should maybe create a guide or something in the future for how to properly record a P:M game.

I noticed you're looking at a relatively cheap Capture Card. The one you're looking at is generally considered to have poor quality and can only output a maximum of 480i. The only Capture Card I've used (and still own) in that price range is this. It can output a maximum of 480p (which is the highest P:M will go on a Wii anyway) and works really well with VirtualDub (the software you will be using). You'll also want to pick up an S-Video Cable for the Wii so the video quality is decent.

Some people will recommend that you buy a Dazzle and while a Dazzle is decent, I'd recommend staying away from it due to the massive headaches a Dazzle Recorder can bring upon you. Some models have issues with sound, some only output 480i (not nearly as good as 480p) etc.

The next step is to download Software which will capture the game that is being played. I'd highly recommend VirtualDub as it will work with the video card listed above and can also function as a video editor afterwards.

All videos that are recorded will need to have lossless codec that they go through in order to decrease the original file size. This can take a 1-hour game original video from being 500gb to 100gb. Basically, if you record without one, you'll eat up your hard drive space fast. The best (atm) for codecs that don't lose any quality is HuffYuv. The video quality will be near 1:1 as you see on the TV while also not having a gigantic file size. You can also use Xvid if you want.

Now you'll want to edit your video. Simply use VirtualDub with simple edits. Once you have your final video, you'll want to encode the file by using a product called MeGUI. It'll encode the file into x264 and NeroAAC using a video editing language AviSynth. It's all pretty easy to use.

If you want to record on your TV and computer at the same time, it'll be a little bit of a headache. Your best bet is to buy splitters and AV female to female adapters. It may look like a mess when you finally get it setup, but it'll still have no lag (or less than 1 frame).

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. There are some really good tutorials and guides over at Something Awful LP Wiki. Even though it's for Lets Plays, it'll still be able to help you since you're trying to effectively do the same thing.

EDIT: You could also drop money on an Elgato HD Game Capture, but they're really expensive. The quality is second-to-none though.

Would not recommend laptops. Building a desktop is cheaper but if you really want a laptop that plays PM look into an i5.

This is the cheapest one I could find and I know for a fact it can play PM at fullspeed because I have the same i5 in my laptop.

EDIT: One thing to note when getting a laptop like this is that it comes with a 5400rpm HDD, which will be slower than desktop HDDs youre used too. Best bet is to replace it with a 7200rpm HDD or just get a SDD. (I'd go with SDD because you'll notice a huge increase in speed)

I dunno 'bout any of you, but I love me a nice match on the good ol' [wii bowling ball].

... jk :P . I use the classic controller pro. It has grips like the GameCube controller, is lightweight, and has FOUR buttons on the back instead of three. The button placement shouldn't take too long to get used to (especially when compared with the wiichuck). It's basically Nintendo's version of a PS2 controller.

So after poking around in /r/headphones a bit, the Superlux HD 681 has caught my eye. Semi-open seems best for ease of transportation. Good bass, which is definitely something I would want. The isolation seems decent going off reviews, and I'd certainly want that for tournaments. The price seems fairly affordable, though I dunno how much of that is due to Amazon sale and how much of it is because its just cheap lol. Thoughts?

EDIT: Actually, I haven't really looked into good IEM's before. Would it be possible for IEM's to have enough isolation that it would block out outside noise? (One of the main reasons I listen to music is so I can't heard crowd chatter/commentary.)

I recommend investing in an SD reader, you can find good USB ones for like $8 USD. It's really nice to have for anybody who plays PM, especially if you like mods.

Think Super_Bad got confused by you saying converter, you're just asking about splitters yeah? You can get unpowered splitters for super cheap, and even amplifiers aren't expensive. An amp is better but the unpowered splitters will still get the job done.

Also please don't get a Dazzle, they're trash. Go with the GV-USB2 suggestion if you're looking for something cheap and decent.

Edit: Oh actually you may want to get the Roxio GameCap SD, it's cheap too and does component capture and pass through. You'll need to get component Wii cables, but they're super cheap on Ebay, and also just a standard component cable, no splitters needed.

Edit 2: Oh nvm the Roxio has been on sale for $50 for ages but apparently they finally ended that, not worth it for $100 lol.

Edit 3: Actually if you add the Roxio to your cart on the site it still says it's only $50.

Edit 4: 20ROXIOSAVE for 20% off on the Roxio store

Could anyone recommend some HDMI monitors with speakers for playing PM on? Trying to design a portable PM setup that would be easy to carry around. I have this currently, though the resolution is a bit off so PM doesn't quite line up with the full screen size. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated.

What sd card would you recommend, I don't know which cards above 4 gb work well with modded wii's.

edit: I'm looking at this sd, is it compatible for modding? https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-SDHC-Memory-Card/dp/B007JRB0SS

edit 2: But if anyone can run this through usbloader, care to share how?

edit 3: Bought it, works.

My guess is that the laser that reads the discs is dying/dead and you would need to replace it. The laser itself is about $10 on Amazon and if you feel confident there are a million guides on YouTube on how to do so. You would need to order a new laser and make sure you have the correct screwdrivers (I think you need a tri-wing and a Phillips for a Wii).

I actually picked up a wii that wouldn't read certain discs because I knew I could fix it. After 20 minutes of work I had replaced the laser and the Wii worked great.

Sometimes the laser gets dirty and you might just need to clean it (I picked my Wii off of a smoker). Other times it is just too weak to read certain Wii discs; some like Brawl are dual-layer and need a strong laser to read them. You might be able to test if you laser is just weak if it can read single-layer games (Wii-sports, Gamecube games come to mind).

Either way don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and try and fix it yourself if it isn't reading discs already you can't do much worse.

if you are looking for price/perf, hardware wise, the new acer v3-772g-5413 uses a i5-4210m(2.6ghz, .1 ghz higher than stock 4200m) along with an 850m 2gb ddr5 (equivalent to an underclocked desktop 750ti)

its flaw is that its acer quality, so battery life isn't the best and can get hot under certain conditions(one of the few laptops where a laptop cooler would be prefered)

a requirement for notebook laptops almost is a haswell based CPU for smoothest performance, as notebook cpus are downclocked from their desktop counterparts and you need the benefit haswell/devils canyon generation cpus to play more smoothly on a mobile system

then i suggest getting this (or something like it) for your desktop: http://www.avermedia-usa.com//AVerTV/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=482

And if you want it to be more portable, get this and use your laptop: http://www.avermedia-usa.com//AVerTV/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=511

I assume you have a crt and want to use the normal cables, so you will also need a splitter, and 2 more cords.

This is the splitter I use: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005N0CRT4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And i bought 2 of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I1DN32/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Let me know if you want to use HDMI, i do that too :)

u/josephgee · 2 pointsr/SSBPM

Look at the Avermedia C039. You also need 3 RCA Y-splitters and 2 Composite extension cables (you can get longer ones if you want).

u/JCOnyx · 3 pointsr/SSBPM

This isn't actually true. The component cable that it comes with is compatible with composite cables. I can record SNES gameplay with just the component cable by placing the yellow end in the red video slot.

It also upscales at a faster rate then my television does, meaning I get less lag playing through my Elgato then if my SNES was just connected to my HD television. A major plus, if you don't happen to have a CRT tv.
