I wanted to do a quick write up of a fun project I just finished today. I hope you dig it!

I needed bases for my Rogue One figures (Seriously, check out Sun and Skull studios - great stuff!) that came in, but what is this? FFG does not sell extra bases? Well, close enough just won't do, so I did what any crafty gamer does, and I got to work. Let's make some bases!

So the first thing I did was get some Smooth-On Silicone Molding material and some Smooth-On liquid plastic. I wanted to make a mold of a bunch of bases at once, so I could replicate them in batches. Once the product came in, I could start the project.

As far as making molds go, this was going to be pretty easy. The technique is referred to as a "Dump Mold" - basically, we have a fairly flat object to duplicate, and a flat surface to pour the mold onto. We don't need to have the mold wrap around to the other side of the bases, because the bottoms of them are flat.

I used Hot Glue to stick the 8 bases I wanted to replicate to a piece of Foam Core board, and then I used the same Foam Core and Hot Glue to form a box. This is what I was going to make my Silicone Mold from.

Once this was done, I mixed equal parts of the two part silicone material in disposable cups. Being sure that the pink and blue materials are thoroughly mixed together and blended into a purple material with no streaks in it. We then poured this into the box we made, and tamped it down to get any air bubbles out of the mix. This has to sit and cure overnight.

The next day, I was able to break apart my box to reveal a well formed silicone mold! A little flash on the edges was just fine here, and wont interfere with the later plastic pour.

With the mold made and cured, it was time to make our actual plastic material. We needed a LOT less of this to make the actual bases, so I was trying to be careful with my pours. We mixed equal parts of the liquid plastic material together and mixed it well. This stuff is clear out of the bottle, but sets up to make a white plastic when it is all done. I could have added coloring agents to change the white into something else, but I knew I was painting these guys regardless after the fact, so the white was fine.

Pouring the plastic was fairly easy, but I was trying to keep all of the plastic in the mold itself, without overfilling and creating a "bulbed out" look that I would need to file down after.

15 minutes later, my perfect replica bases popped out, and are ready to have some Rogue One K-2 units attached to them!

I hope you liked this little walk through. Give this technique a try, it got some great results. :)

The Army Painter Miniature Painting Kit with Bonus Wargamer Regiment Miniature Paint Brush - Acrylic Model Paint Set with 50 Bottles of Non Toxic Model Paints - Mega Paint Set 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTXRUUT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_A9jWCbSM25CCW

Is a great set that I purchased when I got into 40k. It has a great selection of colors and washes so you’ll have everything you need to get started. Plus with all the options the set will grow with you as a painter. As you get more comfortable you can use what’s in there to expand into adding more advanced shades and highlights. As long as you remember to “thin your paints” it should last you awhile. If you want to get the most out of these or any paints I’d also recommend looking up how to make a wet pallet. It’s easy and makes a little paint go along way. Hope this helps.

Legion is my first miniature game as well! A buddy of mine recommended a army painter set when I first started. To be honest they are not that great and a couple of the brushes have fallen apart. I have been eyeing these brushes on amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Miniature-Brushes-Detailing-Painting-Watercolor/dp/B01M7UFLP5/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=18KR6TIBSRBKI&keywords=miniature+brushes&qid=1550092873&s=gateway&sprefix=miniature+bru%2Caps%2C127&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1

they seem like a nice set! Those vallejo paints will work perfectly, I have a few of them and I really like their product. Citadel paints (in my opinion) are top tier paint quality wise. If you dont want to shell out the "Citadel Tax" for them, vallejo is an awesome product for the price.

u/TheEclecticGamer · 1 pointr/SWlegion

I've streamed board games but not miniatures.

I would say that I think having an overhead view would be important if you want people to follow the gameplay so that they can get a correct sense of where things are in relation to each other.

OBS is great and free, use that.

If you're going to have a dedicated "director" they can switch between angles live, otherwise you can do a multicam situation all on the same screen. A director could also update overlays live. We eventually switched to just doing youtube videos and so we recorded each camera separately and edited them together for the final product.

I think you could choose to not do a dice camera. Doing it will be more exciting as people can see the rolls but if you don't just be careful to specify what was rolled out loud for the camera so the viewers know.

You can do a lot with just webcams, this is the one I have 3 of. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Widescreen-Calling-Recording-Desktop/dp/B006JH8T3S/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523112956&sr=1-4

I do use a separate mic though.

u/Thorvald1331 · 1 pointr/SWlegion

You're almost certainly going to ruin your first brushes, god knows I did, so don't buy anything too expensive. I'd recommend this set as a good starting point;

https://www.amazon.com/Miniatures-Paint-Brush-Miniature-Brushes/dp/B007H4YR8S/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=3MTI00RQ46DDG&keywords=army+painter+brush+set&qid=1550772527&s=gateway&sprefix=army+painter&sr=8-4

Also make sure to grab some brush soap to clean your brushes out;

https://www.amazon.com/General-Pencil-105-BP-Masters-Preserver/dp/B0027AEANE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1FDUSPRMEW4OW&keywords=masters+brush+soap&qid=1550772664&s=gateway&sprefix=masters+brush+&sr=8-1

Here's a vid on how to take care of your brushes and use the soap;

https://youtu.be/GeDwTY7C9xs

You should absolutely make a wet palette too, here's another vid;

https://youtu.be/96mjmqWTPfM

As far as paints go, vallejo and citadel are probably your best option, both are very good brands of paint, some people tend to avoid citadel because they tend to cost a little more and if the jars aren't closed tightly they can dry out easily, so It's best to get what you can get both cheaper and the easier.

u/kodos_der_henker · 1 pointr/SWlegion

First some basics:

for miniature painting we use acrylic colours and there are a lot of different brands available some are more famous among miniatures and scale models (because they have specific colours available, like the one you linked is a palette fur US WW2 military colours) some are more often used by artists and all of them have their advantages. The same with brushes and in the end it is more about personal preference and availability (makes no sense to buy the brand people say it is good but you have to order it while something of equal quality is available in the store around the corner and for a beginner a more basic set with ~10 basic colours is better than such a specific one)

For the brushes you want something similar to this https://www.amazon.com/Detailing-Watercolor-Miniature-Ergonomic-Precision/dp/B004HHIO50/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=army+painter+brushes&qid=1550092128&s=gateway&sr=8-10

in addition to the one you linked because you need more straight/fine detail ones and some larger one depending on the techniques used (dry brushing for example)

The only thing that I really recommend is to use a caned spray primer as colours won't stick very well to the pure plastic surface and you already have a basecoat if you use a coloured one. But it need to be a Primer and not a spray colour. I prefer Army Painter but mostly because of the colours available

Another thin would be Washes which are kind of thinner colours that add a translucent layer to the model or are used for blacklining

https://www.amazon.com/Army-Painter-Warpaints-Quickshade-Wash/dp/B0714QL55V/

(I also prefer Army Painter over Vallejo here, but the link is more for the example pictures)

For a beginner, a coloured Primer and a Wash can already give good (and fast) results on models like Stormtroopers

If you’re talking about the Reaper Learn to Paint kits they’re pretty awesome. I didn’t find out about them until I had already been painting a while too, but some friends and coworkers have picked them up and seem to love them.

For those that haven’t heard of them, with each set you get a few minis, a brush, some paints and a guide to walk you through some basic techniques that’ll get you painting at least tabletop quality.

u/honeybadgerelite · 3 pointsr/SWlegion

I would not recommend the citadel tools. They are quite expensive compared to other brands. I would recommend something like this. The mold line remover I think is unnecessary. You can just as easily remove mold lines using the back edge of a hobby knife blade. the file set might be nice to have, but again, there are cheaper options.

Unless you're really committed to spending your money at that one store or whatever, I recommend checking hobby lobby (or whatever your local equivalent is) for tools and equipment. Don't buy cheap, but don't buy expensive, either. haha.

u/jasonisconfused · 2 pointsr/SWlegion

I ended up ordering three:

Crashed republic gunship: https://www.legionterrain.com/products/crashed-republic-transport-a
Perfect scale, gorgeous, but doesn’t work perfectly on my Venator hangar board because it’s meant to look partially buried. Still worth using.

ARC-170 Revell Snap Tite Model: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m30053120770/?gclsrc=aw.ds&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=1822972057&utm_content=t0&adgroup=66362389821&network=g&device=m&merchant_id=130588229&product_id=m30053120770&product_id=527918099933&gclid=CjwKCAjwldHsBRAoEiwAd0JybY-5_4ti6ALP4hDv0BNlW6tqL6TuO8ridZIClz6_YLGEBZjFXgHhYBoCVsMQAvD_BwE
The scale is smaller than Legion by enough to be noticeable. I’m still gonna use it.

Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BECLK02?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image
I haven’t received this one yet, so I can’t editorialize. It’s supposed to be the same scale as the ARC-170.

u/jsbulen · 5 pointsr/SWlegion

If you're insistent on deconstructing before painting, but want to play a few first, try using sticky-tack or fun-tack to keep the minis together and on their bases. Keep in mind, if painted pieces before gluing and are using a plastic glue or cement, you'll need to get the paint/primer off the contact points before gluing or it won't work properly. Even if you're using regular super glue you should still remove any paint to make a stronger bond.

u/TurboCooler · 3 pointsr/SWlegion

To get started, I recommend getting these two kits to practice.

Reaper Getting Started

Reaper Layers Kit

Whatever miniatures you use, make sure you wash them in warm water and Dove dishwashing liquid.

Those miniatures above DO NOT need primer, but for practice, get some Vallejo, Game Workshop or Army Painter Primer. Whatever you can find locally. Get a gray primer.

Practice on these miniatures. If you do not like them you can try painting them again.

If you want some more practice miniatures find whatever is on clearance at Miniature Market or CoolStuffInc or the unpainted D&D line.

How to start all over again, just soak your painted miniatures in simple green overnight. The next day use some elbow grease, old tooth brush, rinse in clean water and let dry. You are good to give them a second try.

u/Goldenbrownfish · 1 pointr/SWlegion

I use A case or army case because I like magnet solutions

And I use a husky organizer from Home Depot for bits

These are great too https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guard-Pages-Pocket-Sleeves/dp/B01CS104FE/ref=gp_aw_ybh_a_13?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Y76VZ2HVBP5J9HH1B6HQ

u/stuckinmiddleschool · 1 pointr/SWlegion

Clear acrylic rods (these) and blue/green sharpie.

Edit: and actually my go to for lightsabers is fishing line, far less prone to breaking and thin like OG/Rebels sabers. Prequel sabres are nice and chonky though.

u/chazbamfvonbagg · 1 pointr/SWlegion

Army painter starter set or reaper learn to paint those are both solid starter sets that are an excellent quality with a printed how to. Army painter comes with washes and reaper comes with practice minis and a case. I cant recommend anything more than these two. Between the two go with what ever one is cheaper on amazon that day, or who ever you decide to buy from

u/mctyler72 · 5 pointsr/SWlegion

Have you tried "The Masters" brush cleaner? I use it after every session. And yeah cleaning every couple of minutes during painting helps especially if you aren't thinning your paints.
https://www.amazon.com/General-Pencil-105-BP-Masters-Preserver/dp/B0027AEANE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1523292221&sr=8-5&keywords=acrylic+paint+brush+cleaner

u/Debonkulous · 5 pointsr/SWlegion

I tend to buy superglue from my local grocery store. Any kind of “Gel” superglue is what I prefer to use. Loctite has always worked really well for me!

https://www.amazon.com/Loctite-Ultra-Control-4-Gram-1363589/dp/B003Y49R7G

Here’s an amazon link as well

u/flyinganchors · 2 pointsr/SWlegion

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Rogue-U-Wing-Fighter/dp/B01BYBV2OQ/ref=pd_sim_21_65?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01BYBV2OQ&pd_rd_r=0B4QEAR0CJ9NJXNA49EE&pd_rd_w=HUXSw&pd_rd_wg=l8lnP&psc=1&refRID=0B4QEAR0CJ9NJXNA49EE

This looks like it might work out perfectly. Someone in the reviews posted images of the U-wing with IA minis, and as the legion guys are about a head taller, it looks it works really well. Only downside is the price, ($35), but with the untimely demise of toys r us, finding one out on liquidation sale shouldn't be difficult (at least, my local one had a bunch the other day).

u/matheww19 · 1 pointr/SWlegion

I ordered one of these off Amazon, very good quality, and very reasonably priced. They have a bunch of different prints you can look at. https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Grid-Game-Mat-Wargaming/dp/B06XGSGGXD

u/neverdeadned22 · 3 pointsr/SWlegion

Here's the listing on Amazon for the set comes with a brush as well. There's a brush kit from them as well with miniature brushes for like $13 and a spray cost about $15 as well but if you get the off white it's saving you so much time and effort to begin with

u/VoteTedJameson · 2 pointsr/SWlegion

There are some purpose-made storage trays like this: https://www.amazon.com/HS110LG04-Foam-Tray-Legion-Airspeeder/dp/B07FFVV3DS/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1549559221&sr=1-1&keywords=Star+Wars+Legion+foam , but they're expensive.
I put my AT-ST in a $1 storage bin from target with some foam cut from an acoustic panel in the bottom to cushion it, and it works fine. I use a tool box for my X-wing and Armada minis and I'm thinking I'll get one for my Legion troopers as well. https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Professional-Organizer/dp/B00005QWYF/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1549559346&sr=8-22&keywords=Tool+box+Stanley You can get them at Home Depot or Lowe's for cheap, they're tough and they're always available.

u/SnapshotSuperhero · 3 pointsr/SWlegion

I ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006O6QXU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Enough to do way more lightsabers than I'll ever need. Just trimmed it to size, filed the end to be rounded, and then colored with a red sharpie. Once dry I sealed it with gloss varnish. I recommend attaching the blade before coloring with sharpie so you don't smudge it with fingerprints.

I also picked up a neon green, blue, and yellow sharpie... Plenty of blade colors.

Not sure if this is what you meant. But it makes it easy for opponents to see your cards and upgrades. Just pass the whole thing across the table if they ask a question

I use these pages, however they are for a smaller binder. But I load a page with the unit card, all unit specific upgrades and the things I never remove. Then I can pull the whole page and use it during play. Just flip the cards I'm not using.

I have a Battle Foam bag that I use for transporting whatever minis I'm using, and then the rest of my minis get stored in Plano tackle storage containers. My dice and tokens go in a smaller Plano container that fits in the front pocket of my Battle Foam bag. My cards go in these: https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guard-Pages-Pocket-Sleeves/dp/B01CS104FE/ref=pd_rhf_ee_s_rp_c_0_4/146-1777481-1254310?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01CS104FE&pd_rd_r=9d6f0972-32f7-4251-b4cb-92737b717bc1&pd_rd_w=7prSU&pd_rd_wg=lrBnI&pf_rd_p=08488724-755c-4f52-8612-2237abee1792&pf_rd_r=7QV4PCAJ5JV8PPEFMEJD&psc=1&refRID=7QV4PCAJ5JV8PPEFMEJD

with this binder: https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guard-Supreme-Compact-Sleeves/dp/B01CS10602/ref=pd_bxgy_21_img_2/146-1777481-1254310?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01CS10602&pd_rd_r=ff240fbf-0c84-4a69-a8e6-35dcddf6c9b0&pd_rd_w=kZv1W&pd_rd_wg=ZVNEQ&pf_rd_p=a2006322-0bc0-4db9-a08e-d168c18ce6f0&pf_rd_r=DEBAWC18GGTMM6VZHP08&psc=1&refRID=DEBAWC18GGTMM6VZHP08

I can't recommend that card storage solution enough, because you can keep your unit cards and their relevant upgrade cards all on the same page, and then just flip any upgrade cards you aren't using face-down, and keep everything in the pages during your games. Makes setting up and putting away much easier, and misplacing cards a lot less likely.
