There is a TON of things at SJSU that it can be overwhelming, as a 5th year student this year I am still finding new things on campus that I had no idea about. I’ve learned tons of tips and tricks through my years here that I really do wish I knew from the very beginning. Since we’re getting a whole new set of freshmen in the coming academic year I decided to share a ton of things I learned through my time.

Getting to School

The #1 thing you’ll hear when you sign up for SJSU, at least in my experience, is that there is never parking. While it is true that SJSU has a major parking problem, it isn’t true if you know how to handle it. The standard parking garages on campus, while nice and convenient due to their location, do fill up quickly and if you stop class after 9:30am you won’t find a spot. If you have a early class you should be fine.

Alternatives are SJSU Park and Ride which is a couple blocks from campus but is cheaper and always has parking. $96/semester is legit.

Another lesser known alternative is the City of San Jose: 4th Street Garage, which sells SJSU permits and always has parking available. It’s price is comparable to SJSU’s pricing. If you are coming to campus for only one class Safeway The Market offers 2 hour parking with ANY purchase, so buy a Soda and stay for one period. It’s cheaper than a permit.

Motorcycle parking is FREE on the streets surrounding SJSU, this is my personal choice as it’s the best parking on campus. You obviously would either need to have a bike or buy one to take advantage of this.

Lastly, consider public transit. The Light Rail is FREE for all students, and you can park at a Park and Ride for free and take the train to campus.

If you live downtown consider the Bay Area Bike Share, it offers affordable rental bikes when you need it without needing to lock it up on campus. The closest drop off to SJSU is near the library.

Passing your classes

Included in our tuition is a ton of services designed to help you pass your classes. The SJSU Peer Connections Program offers tutoring for classes to help you pass; I took advantage of this in my earlier years to help pass Calculus and it proved invaluable. You need to stop by for an appointment, but its quick and easy. They also offer mentoring which is useful for adjusting to college life if you’re coming from high-school. Also, their graduation workshops are a godsend.
Another area that’s very helpful is the SJSU Writing Center they will help you improve your writing skills, and for those in those difficult English or Writing classes they can help you pass.

Lastly the SJSU MLK Library offers FREE study rooms for students, perfect for group projects. Book a week in advanced for the best time slots. You can only reserve 1 hour at a time, but if you’re group is 3 people you could have it for 3 hours if you book back to back.

Programs for New Students

SJSU Offers Welcome Days for all new students. These days prove to be VERY useful for meeting people and learning about the campus.

If you're coming from High-school you may get recommended to take Science 2. DO NOT DO THIS. It's a total waste of time and does little to nothing to prepare you for college. If you've ever take an AVID course its like that, but with 10x more busy work.

Online Classes

It took me 2 years to realize this, but Online Only classes don't show up on mysjsu's class search as "Online", they in fact show up as a TBD under room number. If you want to take an online class look for that while searching for classes.

Food

On campus food, despite what people say, is alright. The Student Union offers solid food at reasonable prices. Who doesn’t like Taco Bell and Jamba Juice? We even just got a Starbucks on campus.

The Dining Commons is alright, but if you can forgo a meal plan you’ll save a ton of money and get better food around campus.

This is a solid list of all the places near campus. Most are plenty good and offer better food than that found on campus. San Jose has a TON of good food options.

Grocery Outlet is your friend if you’re looking for groceries for your dorm or apartment. It’s by far the cheapest store in the area for groceries. Also, beer is cheap too, usually $2 less than Safeway per 6-pack.

Jobs

Working while in school is not for everyone, but it really does help that Resume and gives you some money to spend on and around campus. If you can avoid taking out extra loans by working, you'll save thousands of dollars in the long run.

The SJSU Career center is very helpful in helping you find a job. Craigslist is also useful. You can find a ton of businesses hiring around downtown as well. Many companies work with students schedules.

I work full time and attend school 2 (long) days a week. This works for me, but may not work for you. I take 12 units and am doing just fine working full time, but everyone is different.

Really there are a ton of ways you can go about this.

Dating

Like a job, dating in school is not for everyone. Boyfriends and Girlfriends take a lot of time and add to the stress. They can also be very valuable for dealing with problems and can provide you with entertainment. It's really hit or miss.

Here is a list of some date ideas in San Jose that I made.

Also, if you have room-mates, please be smart about when and where you get intimate with your partner if you want to avoid very embarrassing situations, I know this one from experience.

Activities and Nightlife

You came to college to have fun, admit it! Alright, so most of us are here to study hard and work hard, but we all have to have some fun once in a while. Here is a guide I made of the best activities in San Jose for under $20 you’ll find a ton to do in San Jose.

For night life you have two Downtown districts dedicated to it. The SOFA area which is near the Convention Center offers a nice quiet bar scene with some good options. Haberdasher is a legit bar to take a date if you want to impress them. My personal favorite is San Pedro Square, tons of bars and very reasonable prices. SP2 offers a sweet happy hour with drunks under $6. Near SPS you find AFK Gamer Lounge to get your Video Game fix, and ISO Beers offers the biggest selection of beers that I know of in the area.

There is so much nightlife around SJSU you’ll never run out of ways to get drunk.

Bathrooms

I feel weird for writing this, but I’ve pooped in my fair share of bathrooms at school and some are definitely better than others. Avoid BBC, DMH, SH and the Library, all 4 buildings bathrooms are disgusting. The best bathrooms are Tower Hall 2nd floor, SSC, SU, ART, and YUH. If you prefer privacy there is a couple single occupancy rooms in MQH.

”Free” Perks

There is a ton of things included in our tuition that people don’t know about. The Lightrail is free, so is the city bus. You need to get a clipper card from Transportation Solutions.

There is reduced price OTC Medication that you can find at the Student Health Center. Allergy Med bottles as low as $2. They also also Tylenol, Midol, Lactaid, Nyquil, alka-seltzer, lube and pretty much everything else you can find at a pharmacy. Also the Health Center offers free condoms, though only up to 3 a day. Pregnancy and STD tests are also free (But damn it use a condom).

Adobe CC is free for all students which is over $50 a month at full price. You need to renew every year.
You can rent a laptop, or iPad and even Calculators for free from the MLK Library.

I know there are a ton more things included with our tuition. Feel free to comment and I’ll add to this list.

Another unknown service included in tuition is the Instructional Resource Center that gives students free rentals of audio/ video equipment such as classroom projectors, HD cameras, DSLRs, microphones, voice recorders etc etc.
It's located on the first floor of DMH! Use it!
Also, Microsoft Office 365 is provided free for all students now too. Just Google search "sjsu software downloads" for instructions on downloading. (/u/robcas65)

Printing

The cheapest printing on campus is your own I love mine, and it costs me less than $20 a year to run, you’ll thank me later.

If you must print on campus, check with your major. Most majors offer free lab which has a printer, most students get up to 500 pages a year for free.

A last resort should be the library, which is $0.10 a page.

Making Friends

This is the hardest part for a lot of people, especially commuters. My recommendation would be to join a club, join meetup.com, make an account on OkCupid or Tinder, and be friendly.

Final Thoughts

SJSU is a FANTASTIC school, don't let other people tell you otherwise. We're getting a great education at a fraction of the cost of a UC. A ton of people will give you shit for the school, but most people are ignorant.

Re: #1-- On the west coast, work isn't 9-5, hell, it's been 8-5 and no you best not take that whole hour lunch that CA requires unlike the very east coast. Many people in white collar jobs are working more than whatever they actually get paid for, whether that's 40 hours or something else. When you work 12 or 16 hour days, when you don't take smoke breaks because smoking is not cool in CA, you take some social media breaks. We have also found that alternative environments- a break room that's a play room, walking with coworkers, etc. help with bonding and brainstorming and productivity as a whole. Truth, due to the unfairness of it all, those doing hourly work for low pay are also likely working more than they are paid for, which is something those in the middle think is not cool-- which is why living wages receive a fair amount of support. But the divide between the kind of wages and the treatment of workers between the salaried skilled and the people who make their catered lunches is pretty wide and sometimes there is a still a need for more compassion. Some folks have zero flexibility in their lives with regards to their job. Individual companies even in high tech can differ, with some setting minimum hours or resisting work from home policies, and some not caring about anything so long as you get your work done and wow the boss once in awhile. As a whole, we really struggle with work-life balance, and if the weather wasn't so damn nice outside, it might be even worse.

2: We don't have pets because of loneliness. We have pets because we love pets. We have pets because we can afford their companionship. And we have pets in greater number, most importantly, because we have and continue to push for the most liberal pet policies in rentals, so that a higher proportion of Bay Area residents in rentals can have pets and can have the expectation that they can move and new landlords will accept their pets. if someone does not have a pet, you're likely to hear "I am allergic" over "my landlord doesn't allow them." Where shelters are full in other states, community shelters work to encourage landlords to open their minds to pet-friendly policies because renters are the biggest market they can't reach. Also, having kids in the Bay Area is expensive, so some people have more time for pets as they delay having kids.

3: It's expensive to live here because you're here. Just being honest. Other people want to come from other places for jobs and jobs are being created here, and the influx of new people has been making CA more expensive since the Spanish showed up. There's not enough housing, the disparity in pay between the very wealthy and the minimum wage creates tension and everyone feels it. We had a mini-housing bust in 2008-2009, but the price of everything else did not go down, we had high unemployment for awhile, and yet, people still came from other places for jobs here. As long as that continues, so does the cost of living here.

4: As innovative as CA might be in so many ways, you aren't just noticing racial segregation. For a state that prides itself on diversity, women have not broken through the glass ceiling so you don't see them either (or everyone losing their minds over it when it happens), you don't see enough Hispanic people or black people of either gender in enough management- or in tech at all. [This] (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/google-discloses-workforce-diversity-data-good/) came out in May and one might expect the rest of the Bay Area big companies to look even worse. Why is that? Great question. What can we do about it? Well, a number of things, but I guarantee you that the white men currently benefiting from it are not going to be the ones to change it, we are. Start with asking some questions where you work now, why the management doesn't reflect the diversity of the workforce. One thing that we have to battle as a society, particularly locally to CA, is ageism. A statistically significant portion of those unemployed in the last recession were over 50, and there are clear biases in HR and in the tech world that older employees are washed up, out of date, have no skills and are untrainable. Not true, but pervasive and detriment to the diversity and experience in our workforce.

On another note, though, "immigrants without accents," this is the normal makeup of CA and San Jose in particular, it's been diverse since Europeans interrupted the Native Americans, we take great pride in actually looking like the Melting Pot everyone else talks about. You might enjoy the series of CA history books by the author [Kevin Starr] (http://www.amazon.com/Kevin-Starr/e/B000APB8FG/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1407001670&sr=8-1) for more information and entertainment while you learn about it. Another rec is the "Images of America" series with topics from [geographical neighborhoods] (http://www.amazon.com/Historic-Downtown-America-Arcadia-Publishing/dp/0738529222/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407001889&sr=8-1&keywords=downtown+san+jose) to specific immigrant populations. Most are available at our awesome public libraries. White has been the minority here for my 30+ years. Grow up with diversity and it's pretty easy to get uncomfortable with assumptions made when diversity disappears-- a horrified look at the terribly inappropriate comments is a good first step, and if you stay here long enough you'll end up doing it too. We deal with other stereotypes too, that we are all blond and live on the beach a la Baywatch, and have you been in the ocean in Santa Cruz? It's freezing. We have a hoodie culture, not bikini.

5: As mentioned previously, regions have their diversity. Within the Bay Area, within neighborhoods in San Jose, we have some segregation by cultural communities, by socioeconomic status, etc. some of it less than ideal but you can't get away from the Melting Pot aspect in San Jose as you might in some other places in the state. It obviously looks different to you than wherever you came from, and if we traveled to Philly or Chicago we might also note a higher proportion of black people in the city than we have in San Jose, as you'd also find a higher proportion of black residents of the Bay Area in Oakland and Richmond, I don't want to go off on a tangent for the reasons, I am just commenting that every place looks different. So you're noticing a specific population that doesn't have "mass" wherever "home" is for you. Some of it is that you work in tech, in engineering, an area where asians and east asians are well-represented in the local workforce and where a majority of H1B visa holders are coming from, H1B being the visa for a specific skill set a company declares they can't find in potential employees locally. Could also be the neighborhood you are living in, which might be a popular neighborhood for asian and east asian families. Some if it is just internalizing what /u/mdf356 described- we are kinda the 30/30/30 city. It's totally what makes us special. Break those stats up even further and it's why we have amazing options for music, food, language, festivals and holidays, etc. and why CA is notorious for exporting our "liberal ideas" about all kinds of things to the rest of the country. It's organic and comes from ALL the people.

>That's a gorgeous fence

My wife would digress, she says the curve isn't centered. 2 flats on one side, 3 on the other.

>I am an idiot

C'mon you run trivia nights, I've seen you post here plenty. There are true idiots on this sub, and you're not one of them (IMHO)

>don't know if I could actually do that.

Don't know until you try. I didn't know until I tried, but I had some fencebuilding experience when my family still had ranches (mostly the old men yelling at me to carry wood, sand, nail, no cutting)

This is how I did it. Maybe I can lend a hand, I dunno. You'd have to entertain my wife and kids and maybe feed us or something. Maybe you could do the same for us sometime.

Tools: (mostly cheap harbor freight)

  • Miter box saw. This let's you cut fairly precise angles.
  • Jig Saw. For finishing the curve on top.
  • Drill. For putting things together
  • Hammer Drill. For drilling in cement anchors (Mine is freestanding, not attached to the fence or house)
  • String, for making that swooshy curve.

I started off by measuring. Once I had my measurements in, I took a long hard look at my neighbors fence (we have that picture) and copied the framing. I scaled it for my entryway.

Once I had the basic design down, I drilled in my post cement anchors. I used 4 of these Simpson Strong Tie Fence Anchors. Even after a year, the fence is still as strong as the day I made it.

After I had my posts up, I put the J screw hinge onto the posts and connected some cross members so the posts would shore up against each other.

I took what would become my gate frame, and put the other half of the j screw hinge in. Then I did one final measure now that I knew how much space the hinges took up.

Pulled the 4x4's off the hinge post, and built out the rest of my frame. I made sure to leave plenty of room at the bottom for the gate to swing freely. After the frames were complete, I re-hung them on the J hooks.

Once the frames were up, I began skinning them. I laid a 4x4 at the bottom to give myself spacing (Didn't want the skin scraping) and put up fenceboard. Throughout this entire process, I used deck screws with the star bit. These bits don't slip, and the screws are coated to sort of self lubricate themselves through the wood.

After all the skin was up, I tied a string to where I thought was center at the bottom of the fence. I stretched the string to the top of the fence and tied a crayon to it (just didn't have a pencil) The string acts like a giant compass, and let me make a nice even arc.

Finally, I took a hand held jig saw and sawed along the line at the top making that nice curve.

Only took me a day to knock it out.

Unfortunately, the actual history of Sarah Winchester is contrary to what the house's current story is. She was a brilliant but secretive woman who had arthritis which made it hard for her to get around. When the house was purchased from her estate after her death it was purchased with the sole purpose of advertising it as a ghostly haunted house to make money instead of telling Sarah's actual story. The current director of the house came from Disney (who, when we asked if they were going to tell the real story, said that it wasn't good for business to tell her story truthfully) if that is any indication of their direction. I recommend going to the house for it's architectural features and its important place in the history of San Jose and do enjoy the story they are presenting but please know that the history of that house is not exactly what you are being told. Good bedtime reading if you are interested, please note that last I heard this book was not available in the gift shop at the house for obvious reasons. The book was heavily researched using the archives at Campbell Historical Society which include her personal letters as well as information pertaining to the building of her house and the philanthropic legacy she left behind.

A lot of the people who live in San Jose that I have spoken to know this history for the Winchester House, although a lot still do not know this story. That might help to explain why some locals do not go to the house. Enjoy your trip!

I highly, highly recommend this mattress foundation. I move pretty frequently and have zero storage space and this is a great solution for both of those problems.

I used to have a really heavy and large wooden futon frame, which was pretty squeaky and unnecessarily difficult to set up but I ended up buying this model off Craigslist and I'm never going back. It's pretty easy to set up, very sturdy, and it makes no noise. And the best part is that the frame itself is pretty light and compact once you break it down so it makes moving it from place to place way easier.

Amazon baby.

Woodsman Beard Oil is awesome. $20 may seem steep but it lasts forever so it really isn't that bad. My wife loves the smell of it as well.

As for beard combs... ehh. I don't know what brand mine is but it works fine. I can't imagine other combs being that much better. Also an Amazon purchase.

u/EbbyB · 6 pointsr/SanJose

I got this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DLG9GFG/

I spent hour doing research and came up with a camera that was out of budget, so I figured "Amazon's Choice" outta be good enough in a pinch. Some settings took some tinkering (the G-sensor had to be disabled because every moderate pothole would lock video files until the card was full) but finally got it fairly reliable. I'm happy. :)

The day after I installed the it, a woman's car was burglarized right in front of my camera but the motion detection didn't trigger or catch anything. I was bummed; I could have been a hero!

Best sauces I've had in the bay area are Smoking Pig's - they have a couple more traditional sweet sauces, a mustard-based carolina sauce, and a fairly spicy hot bbq sauce. It's a restaurant with a few locations in the south bay. They definitely sell bottles in their restaurants, not sure about grocey stores.

But this is the best bbq sauce you'll ever have in your life: https://www.amazon.com/Dinosaur-Wango-Tango-Habanero-Sauce/dp/B007HTBOW0/

Unless you're looking to meet people you don't need to take cooking classes. Check out 4 Hour Chef by Tim Feriss it's seriously one of the best books out there for learning cooking techniques. Once you've gone through that you'll pretty much be able to cook anything well. I went through a few of the recipes and technique sections to brush up on some skills and have been able to apply them to other recipes across the board.

I've heard great things about BJJ, still need to check it out one of these days, any suggestions on places to check out in SJ?

u/hacksoncode · 3 pointsr/SanJose

There might possibly be somewhere that would do that for a fee... but that fee would almost certainly be higher than the cost of a cheap Circular Saw, like this. Probably half your neighbors have one, too, for that matter.

Or if that's too rich, and you're feeling anti-social, drill a hole in it and use a jab saw... though that will take a while. Sigh... no drill? Yeah, just get the circular saw.

You're right, my class is doing well. I'm part of a class which is intelligent enough to make an educated argument with valid evidence.

I suggest reading a book or two about how to create a solid argument for your debate, then everyone will actually listen to you!

Basic Debate: 4th Edition

Good luck my friend.

I highly suggest you buy a gun. Preferably a hand gun or shotgun. Next time this guy does this, go outside with the gun and tell him to leave. I'd even take a few bullets or shotguns shells in your hand and throw them at the bum. Put on some boots too and give him a good kick too to get him moving. You can't let these dregs of society walk all over you. You have to be firm with them or they'll take everything. Even without having to deal with the bum. I suggest you buy a gun before governor moonbeam and the communist state legislature bans them.

If he attacks you, regardless of the law you have every right to defend yourself. Even with lethal force. That's God's law.

I've had to deal with plenty of bums and hippies squatting around my property and the property of friends/relatives. A good quality mace (not that $6 pepper spray crap) can also be helpful. Especially when used like in that video. Mace likely will only agitate the bum instead of stopping them. So be prepared to have a baton, bat, ax handle, etc ready to smack once they start shuffling over towards you. It's annoying, it's tedious. But if you live in certain parts of the Bay Area you get used to removing degenerates from property.

This is the correct answer. And this is important: Anyone who is renting their modem from Comcast is just throwing away money.

They're charging you $7/month to rent an inferior DIOCSIS 2 modem - when you could go buy a brand new 3.0 modem with better speeds for $50-65. If you shop around you can find them pretty cheap.

u/shuebacca · 5 pointsr/SanJose

I got the "Motorola SB6121"

Also the "Motorola SB6141" is a good one too. It's technically "better" since it has an more down stream channels then the 6121. I bought the lower model since it was cheaper.

I got it on amazon and made sure it was new in retail box, direct from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller.
