Does it have to be motion control? My experience with them has been that they're awful to use. I find a touchpad works a lot better. Maybe you've a different use case than I do.

I use something like this. They can control volume just fine, but you'll need to make sure HDMI-CEC passthrough is enabled on the Shield, and whatever equipment you have for audio accepts CEC. I, personally, do not like CEC because it can often get confused and start turning off the wrong thing, stuff like that. I have older components though, so maybe it works better on newer stuff?

I used one of those controllers for Keyboard/Mouse struff. But I use a Harmony remote for most stuff. I don't need the keyboard/mouse all that frequently so it just sits on the end-table. The Harmony remote controls a Flirc that's plugged into the Shield. Between the Harmony Remote and the Flirc I can use the remote to do just about anything. It's really amazing. You can even macro multi-key commands, assign them to a specific key, you name it.

Harmony has some newer remote systems as well. They look like they could do just about anything, you might want to look into that.

Lastly, Google's Android TV Remote App has a touchpad to.

Again, if you really need motion control, I'm not sure. I've not had luck with those.

I have my media (mostly ripped movies) on a NAS and use PLEX on my 16GB Shield.

I bought a 128GB USB 3.1 drive (here) and made it attached storage.

The Plex web and mobile apps work fine. I don't have PlexPass, but I tried it free for 30 days. I decided not to renew because I personally didn't think the benefits were that great. Some of them include (and I'm sure there are others):

  • Movie trailers for movies you own
  • More than 5 min of playback on the mobile app

The Shield does not need to be on all the time; I let mine sleep when I'm done with it.

If you install Plex, you might also want to look into installing the Kodi app and the (PlexKodiConnect)[https://forums.plex.tv/t/plexkodiconnect-kodi-plex-integration-done-right/137555] Kodi add-on that gives you a lot of cool features.

BTW, I don't play games either, but my son and I have found a few games we like and play pretty often. The graphics are fantastic and NVidia GeForce Now is unreal.

Edit: Fixed wrong name for NVidia's service

Even with 3.0, the external storage still has the potential to be faster than internal storage. I wouldn't worry about it too much from the ShieldTV point of view. I would still get the faster USB standard (3.1) for PC access though. Faster file transfers is always welcome. 3.1/3.0 is fully forward and backward compatible. So, get the 3.1 and enjoy the faster file transfers on the PC.

This is what I got, and it is quite a bit faster than the ShieldTV internal storage:

500GB SSD and Silverstone Enclosure

I use this permanently attached, encrypted and adopted (unlike what you are looking for.)

If you want a bigger sized drive, you could use NVMe instead, however the benefit of increased speed is pretty much lost on the ShieldTV.

Before throwing down a ton of money, it might be worth testing Gamestream on your Fire TV with Moonlight: https://www.amazon.com/Cameron-Gutman-Moonlight-Game-Streaming/dp/B00JK4MFN2

In my experience, using the NVIDIA server works better than the Steam server, regardless of the client using it. Since Moonlight is free, it's certainly worth at least a test.

This is a good option to get DV at a good price. There is also a belkin cable food for DV. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GCGKI3O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
For best DV results, stuck to 2m/6ft cables.

SanDisk Ultra Flair 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - SDCZ73-128G-G46

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015CH1PJU/ref=twister_B07G4YD1LN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Been using it for about 9 months with no issues. I had read that USB can get hot, but assumed the recommended ones were tested to survive that heat. I did notice when I first removed it from the Shield that is was pretty hot.

I wonder if the single Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox one will work. I hope its not as limited in support as it looks.

I have an early version of this Rii remote. I absolutely love it.

u/gk2121 · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

Hmm, well I would hope the cable that came with the Atmos bar was 2.0. That is what is connecting the TV to the bar.

The cable going from Shield to bar which states 2.0 is this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M89LV8J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not using any kind of extenders or connectors.

Do you want the gaming controller as well or just the controller for watching/streaming

This is a good price. Get this one.

u/lightinthedark · 3 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Yup, $149 last year on Amazon

With controller didn't hit lowest price til second week of December ($159). Worth getting even if you don't plan on using it. Can easily resell the controller for ~$50.

A NAS is "network attached storage". They are essentially computers largely dedicated to being a hard drive you can access from other computers. They aren't attached via USB, they are attached to your router using an ethernet cable.

The basic idea is that you buy a 4 bay NAS ($500) and put in 4 8TB hard drives (4 x $150 = 600). The NAS does some special hard drive combining magic (RAID) that ultimately gives you 24TB of space (3x8TB). The 4th hard drive is used for redundancy, so if one of the drives fails you just pull it out and put in a new one with no downtime.

There are plenty of options and configurations I didn't mention, but this is basically the gist of it.

https://smile.amazon.com/Synology-bay-DiskStation-DS918-Diskless/dp/B075N1Z9LT/

The shield can then access this hard drive space.

Have fun.

Rii MX6 V1 or V2? (Neither has orange buttons?)

The V1 & the MX9 are better suited for most Shield setups IME.

u/CyberFame · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

You can go to settings and disable system apps and delete apps that you don't use, IN settings at storage you can see which files use your space, downloads, media,...

But you still going to run out of storage, best option is to buy one of this, and use it as adopatable storage. Which means you can use it a main storage for apps. and move other apps to the adoptable storage. Not all apps will work, but games and the most apps will. some Can't be installed on adoptable, if you moved one and it crashes or is slow you can move it back to internal storage. You can choose your storage size. If you can you could use a SSD but it will be formated so watch out, that you don't lose your data.

Ethernet cable GeForce Now works better if you are wired if possible. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BHZZU4I

Internet GeForce NOW requires at least 15Mbps for 720p at 60fps and 25Mbps for 1080p at 60fps.

You’ll need to use a hardwired Ethernet connection or 5GHz wireless router.

NVIDIA SHIELD Controller you may want to get another one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7DQ0L6

u/MoreC33 · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I always buy this one.

I would buy it straight from monoprice website but their return policy is terrible and I’m pretty sure you have to pay shipping.

u/Skodd · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

You have the option to use your external device as a "device storage", some apps will move there or you can just plug it in as use it as an external storage for tv shows/movies.

If you want to use your external device as a device storage, don't plug a usb 2.0 or slow hdd in it. Get a ssd or something like this

u/traal · 4 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Or $50 renewed year round, which is what I bought. Highly recommended, it's one of those things you don't know you needed until you get one.

That's the one I use everywhere in my house.

u/allanfarrell · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Not sure if this will help but you can buy from here but it's a lot cheaper.
