Do more than just 'a bit'. If you are serious, make a serious effort. Nobody 'plans' on getting anyone killed, but it happens.

Paul Stamets has an excellent book on active mushroom identification if that's your interest:

https://www.amazon.com/Psilocybin-Mushrooms-World-Identification-Guide/dp/0898158397

But you will also want to become familiar with other types, as you don't want to risk confusing one type for another.

I recommend Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest by Steve Truddell & Joe Ammirati . Or you can use this online mushroom key.

Also Shroomery.org is a good resource, this page lists the psilocybin species that grow in Washington state. A good active mushroom to focus on is Psilocybe cyanescens.

I bought this one used for less than $150. It goes up to 2500x. The picture you saw was at 1000x.

Added an eyepiece reticle ($15) for measuring and a stage micrometer ($10) to calibrate. I'm happy with it!

You can probably find cheaper used scope, but not much. You need at least 1000x (oil immersion) to get a good ID.

They're fine and they'll make you trip, younger mushrooms are anecdotally more potent. Get a scale if you want to know weight or figure out what the dry weight equivalent would be.

I have no experience with microdosing, but I'd expect you would need a proper scale.
