TLDR: Both the P229 and P226 with E2 grips will probably fit you great, and the 9mm is an excellent choice for home defense and your first handgun in general.
Hey I have smaller/thinner hands as well. The E2 grips really have made my full sized p226 that I just bought enjoyable. I've had it no more than 2 weeks (roughly 600 rounds through it) and I'm already exceptionally comfortable with it. The ergonomics of the gun is great. Stick with the P226 or P229 DA/SA. It takes a little bit of practice to master the trigger, but honestly that's one of the charms of a Sig. It's a tool that in skilled hands can be devastating, and the challenge is a great drive in regards to becoming an overall better marksman. They are tried and true guns that have worked well for years. A family member has owned a P229 .40 for over 10 years now and it still functions beautifully. It was the reason I fell in love with the brand. The heft of the gun, and it's balance just feels so much better than my gen 3 G17 (which is a great firearm in it's own right.)
I would really suggest a 9mm for your first handgun. And the P226. The longer barrel, and the slightly heavier frame/slide will really make it easy to deal with the recoil despite the fact that sigs tend to have a high bore axis compared to a lot of their polymer competitors. 9mm ammo is easy to find in bulk at good prices, and doesn't kill your wallet as you practice and get used to handling the firearm. Plus if you have to use your handgun for home defense (or even carry,) the ballistics of 9mm defensive rounds these days is pretty comparable to their .40 and .45 counterparts. Plus more rounds is always a bonus
The specific gun I recently purchased was this one with the item number E26R-9-BSS. I haven't used the magazines that shipped with it. Instead I bought some 18 round Mec Gar p226 9mm magazines and they work exceptionally well. In my opinion, the night sights are a must. They work well during daylight hours as a triple dot system and at night perform flawlessly. I am even tempted to upgrade my family members old p229 with the new Sig night sights because I love them so much.
I can't respond to #2 because I have had zero problems with my P226, my family's P229 or my P938.
note Grab yourself some synthetic grease for your P226/P229. Mil-Comm TW25B Grease is what I have been using on all my Sig's now and it really seems to be an improvement over just using CLP on the high friction points between the Frame and Slide.
A few weeks ago I found a great deal on an Olight PL-Mini Valkyrie, a really compact handgun light that I’m quite happy with. For the size it puts out a really good beam, they chose a good optic for it, as it has the perfect mixture of throw and flood. Output is a regulated 400 lumen, which seems just right. You aren’t going to spotlight a deer with it, but it’s sufficient for target identification well beyond reasonable self-defense distances. It hardly weighs anything, and doesn’t add any width or length to the footprint of the gun. Non-replaceable batteries is a compromise that feels worth it for the size, and there is a magnetic-attaching USB charger that connects to the base. It has a quick-release lever if you want to remove it for charging, but it works just fine while still mounted.
It doesn’t have as much support from holster manufacturers yet, which brings me to another acquisition I’m happy with. On r/gundeals I found a holster by Code 4 Defense that nicely accommodates the light, as well as my goofy suppressor sights and threaded barrel. I wish it had an option to go over the belt, instead of having to thread it through, but aside from that it’s one of the most comfortable holsters I’ve used. Retention is just right, I’m not sure if it passes the “inverted shake test” off of the body, but on the belt it holds nicely. It also has equal retention with the light dismounted, which is nice. The loops sit directly behind the holster body, and 5 holes for 2 screws gives 3 potential adjustments for height and cant on each side.
The combination is something I’m really happy to have hanging off my belt, and I wholeheartedly recommend both the light and holster if you’re in the market for either.
G10 grips by cool hand with the sunburst texture. I set the SIG buttons in myself, picked them up on eBay.
I was a little unsure of how I would like the texture but it’s really nice, a good balance between grippy and comfortable.

This may be on back order but if you look hard enough it’s not to hard to find them south of $120 and reserve one. Something to think about and I am gonna slap the TLR 7 in my p320c and that TLR 1 on my P226. Also, if you want to protect your light from getting dirty when you take it to the range I recommend getting a flip cover for it. Throw it on for practice at the range and then take it off for regular use to have a clean light when you really need it. Happy shooting man, stay safe, and nice piece.

I bought the TacOps and love it. I also conceal it just fine and I'm skinny as fuck. I'd definitely go for the TacOps. Any P226 is a mighty fine firearm, but the Mk25's distinguishing appeal is a little anchor and the phosphate coated internals. The anchor is useless and the internal coating isn't anything you'll need unless you're wading through saltwater on a regular basis. I love the beavertail on the TacOps and the SRT is great -- very accurate follow-up shots. Personally, I'd also try out the Hogue Rubber Finger Groove Wraparound Grips. They're perfect for me and many others I've spoken with. Also, as far as mags go, I got some MecGar flush-fit 18-rounders.So, with those as well as the grips (thus, reducing overall height) it becomes much more concealable. So, again, I say TacOps all the way.
I would guess the odds of you messing it up would be low. I have completely taken apart my ppq, my hk p30, my glock, my m&p, an SKS, and a mosin nagant without any formal training or special tools. All of the guns were successfully put back together and work perfectly now (although I no longer have the SKS or mosin). Guns are pretty simple mechanically, it's not like I'm some mechanical wizard. If you decide to go the route I suggested, you can PM me and I'll take some high resolution photos of the interior finished product so that you know what to look for. My big issue was that I couldn't figure out what direction one of the pieces was supposed to go. Luckily, my parents own a sig so I grabbed theirs and used that as a basis for me doing mine. If I send you a few pictures, you should be able to figure it out. There are some YouTube videos that are also pretty helpful.
Edit: if you are going to install the SRT, you might wanna get this. You'll understand why once you get started. There is one piece that you have to put in that is fucking impossible to get in place without a magnet thing. I did it without one and... holy shit was it a pain to get the sear into place because it kept slipping out of place and my fingers are big so I couldn't really hold it in place. On YouTube, a lot of people had this tool and made it look so easy. Retrospectively, I REALLY wish I had this before I got started. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000DINDG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479832614&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=magnet+stick&dpPl=1&dpID=31y82P6%2BWOL&ref=plSrch That was the only part of the install that was frustrating. I could have done it in 3 to 5 minutes if it wasnt for that sear... That took me half an hour. If you have that magnet. You'd be able to do it in a manner of minutes. If you get one, don't get one of those with a really wide magnet. Get one like in the link that is small so it can fit into relatively tight spaces. You'll thank me later.
I wrote this review on one:
The NDZ Magazine Extension for P365 is Wonderful. Here's my Review
Ordered this 5 days ago from Amazon and it was in my mailbox this afternoon. Currently $22.99 with free shipping, they come in several color options and with optional laser engraving designs. I went with black and no design.
Install took about one minute. Adds some useful weight that allows easier mag drop. Fits significantly better in my hand, I don't have giant hands but they're not small either.
I hope it's not against the rules but here's a link for it on Amazon. I don't have any connection to this company I'm just really happy with this product.

Thanks! I got them off Amazon.

I got one of these. It didn't actually feel better in my hand, I would go as far as to say I didn't like the feel of it at first. But I was shooting much better groups with it installed so I left it on.
The extra rubber in the beaver tail helps a little bit with the recoil as well.
I use this. It works very well - though it looks like they have raised the price considerably since I bought it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BAHV2RC/ref=twister_B00PFHMMJA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 the page I sent you to has multiple selections for you to choose from. I have the tlr4 on my 229 and I can't say enough good things about it and I also have the full size 320, but I have the Romeo1 RDS on it so I kinda don't need the laser. I'm opting for the tlr1 for myself. For what you're looking for I'd suggest the tlr2g. Kinda pricey imo but it's what you're looking for. Good luck brother
+1 on the speed loader comment. MakerShot has a good one that’s pretty cheap on Amazon. UpLula is great, but this little guy works just fine for me.

Go for it! I have one and fell in love with it. Speaking of the p320 does anyone know if the 17 round mag would fit this

Looks like my wife came over with a kitchen knife and installed your grips. LOL. Beautiful piece!!
I am also looking and have done some research into this. Here is link to a green laser with flashlight that seems to be pretty well recommend. I havent ordered mine yet so this recommendation is only based on some quick searching and minimal reading. I got the 239SAS to be my EDC in warm weather. Its pretty narrow and compact so it conceals well. It does have some weight to it though since its a metal frame. I carry it in either my Bellyband holster or n82 Professional. I've never carried a 2022 so I can't compare there but I do have a 229 Legion I carry which is definitely wider and heavier.
I tried numerous options, and settled on this as the clear winner, in white:

They do make their own proprietary mounts but they also allow for any 1/4 peg boards to fit.
I was also looking at those. They are over priced and like you said, you get stuck in buying their mounts.
This one has good reviews and is made by Sig. :)
