Booms give you a little more versatility for outdoor shoots. Lavs are great for indoor "studio" style shoots. Depends on what you're trying to do.

Canon 5-Ds and 7-Ds are king in the Los Angeles sketch world, though you could get away with something less HD definitely.

Though I'd say ignore the story structure stuff when it comes to sketch. You're not filming a short story with character growth, you're basically just taking one unusual thing and heightening it over the span of 1-3 minutes.

I read his book, which is basically the diary he kept during some of the most interesting Monty Python years. It's pretty cool stuff. I'm sure these notebooks are pretty insightful.

Improv can be structured into sketch as seen by UCB here. I know very few book dedicated solely to sketch but some overall comedy guides go into detail about sketch form and its place in comedy overall. Here.

I have the UCB improv comedy handbook. It is not terribly helpful for sketch writing unless you want to do mostly improv things (I didn't).
